Re: [RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2018-11-04 Thread Patrick Moore
The way to start is to wheel your bike into the store with an air of owning
the place. If someone questions you, you must assume an air of injured and
very superior dignity.

Note: if you get away with it for a year or so, then, when someone
questions you, you can say, "Well! I've been wheeling it through here since
well before you worked here."

Seriously, I do ask first -- "May I use this as my grocery cart?" Must try
it at the new Sprout's nearest my house -- have preferred the nice ride to
the Corrales one.

My double top tube 58 Appaloosa with with the "big" front and rear racks,
medium saddlesack (which I store the large shopsack in), big basket,
generator hub and lights, a couple tubes, patches, pump, etc weighs
42.4lbs. It's so heavy I have stopped caring. Friday night I carried 2
helinox chairs, a growler of beer, and a sweatshirt up my regular climb in
sandals and a soccer jersey and met my wife to watch the sunset. It took
me 15 minutes longer than it does on my road bike but that's beside the
point. I have several light bikes and I'd rather ride my Rivendell on most
occasions.

It was whatever Rivendell installed when they built it; probably a
Pletscher. It gets pretty windy here in Iowa, and I've learned to lay my
bikes on the ground instead of using kickstands or leaning them against
objects. Our Powderkeg sounds like scaffolding falling over when a big gust
of wind catches it.

I haven't had a chance to ride the San Marcos since paring it down to 24.5#
because our bike paths have been under water for the past month. I'm
picking up a custom Guitar Ted-built wheelset of Velocity Quills for my
Atlantis on Monday that should knock off considerable weight when I set it
up tubeless next Spring.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2018-11-03 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
I'm trying to distinguish frame flex from faster riding. For me, I'm not
sure that a Roadeo and Roadini built to the same weight would ride any
faster. Of course, I feel a dramatic difference when I go from my 35 lb
racked and bagged up Hilsen to my 22 lb Roadeo, but I doubt that much of
that is due to the tubing. Would a similarly built up Ram and Roadeo feel
different? Yes, I think the Roadeo would feel faster because it handles
faster. I don't know if it would go any faster, but maybe once you get the
feel for the livelier-handling Roadeo other bikes would feel slow. I don't
know if that has anything to do with the tubing, but that's hard to tell.
As far as frame flex/planing goes I don't notice any on my bikes--maybe a
little on the Roadeo when I'm mashing up hills out of the saddle, but not
convincingly noticeable--only on my heavily loaded AHH did I feel a
consistent spring from the frame flex...

I know that Bill built up his Roadini and it feels fast and he goes fast on
it. I guess he might be a good person to comment on the tubing because he
has a lightish Roadini and a light Legolas...

26.5 lb is not bad at all for such a build. My custom 26" wheel fixie, with
dynamo lighting, fenders, racks, is probably 1 1/2 lb lighter, and that's
with a Dingle fixed drivetrain in place of a 3X9.

* I removed the kickstand because I was tired of the bike falling over all

Now that is interesting, since stands are meant precisely to keep the bike
from falling over. What sort of kickstand, and why did it fall over? I am
ready to remove the bb-area stand from my Hon Solo, because when you have
even a bit more weight in the left-side pannier than the right, the stand
will not hold the bike up, as I discovered yet once again today at the
grocery store.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2018-11-03 Thread Patrick Moore
As an extension of this thread, a related question: what is our list's
lightest Rivendell? Be sure to describe build (fixed, 1XN, 3XN) and size
(48 or 64).

My 1999 Joe Starck gofast fixie custom, 26" wheels, weighs 18.1 lb with all
bolt-on parts but no strap on or slip in parts, a disappointing increase of
0.3 0.-- 04 lb after I weighed it on an expensive digital scale instead of
an apparently less accurate spring scale. Afterward, I could feel the added
weight slowing me down. Actually, it was probably the added flipside Dingle
and the second Iris cage that bumped up the weight.

But seriously, though it has a (gasp!) titanium spindle in the Phil 113 mm
bb assembly, and a (even more gasp!) titanium stem binder bolt, it also has
2X Phil hubs, no lightweights, and 360 gram/pr Dura Ace 7410 SPD pedals
(replacing the ti-spindled, magnesium bodied spds that weighed about 240
grams the pair. *And* in addition to the lightweight 15 t Surly track cog
on side A, it has a 17/19 Dingle on side B, which adds a good 100 grams.
("Speeds" are 76", 67", and a stump-pulling 60".) The rest of the build
bits were chosen for a best-mix of strength + weight + comfort and + style
(I admit it): Pro 5 Vis 46t single, 7410 seatpost, Nitto Tech Deluxe stem,
quill amputated (in the absence of a Pearl; the TD has much the same finish
as the later Pearls); A9 headset, original issue Flite, Iris cages, 7410
brake levers, left with lever proper removed, right pulling (IIRC; logo
long gone) Suntour S Pro caliper. Sun M14A 559 rims, Schwalbe lightweight
26" tubes, Compass Elk Pass tires, Lezyne bar tape, thinner model.

What prompted my question was stumbling via Bike Radar onto a YouTube of
the 2018 National Hill Climb Championships in England, where one
participant, a scrawny 20-something, said his fixed gear entry weighed 5.41
kilos (11.9 lbs). I realize that no Rivendell on this earth will get close
to that, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone got a medium-sized Roadeo
below 18.1, multiple gears, rear brake, and all. So, speak up, please.

Back to the present thread: over 20 years, this bike surprises me each time
I get back on it after riding others with its ease of pedaling -- it
"wants" me to pedal in a higher gear (76" versus the usual ~70"), and it is
easier to get up to speed in that higher gear as well as to maintain it on
the flats. It also climbs easier, even with the higher gear. It's
noticeably easier to pedal than the almost identical 2003 Curt, which of
course is built with fenders, lights, racks. That said, when Chauncey
Matthews hoisted the frameset to take it back to his workshop for
modifications last summer, he shrugged and said, "Not so light."

Hill Climb Championships: Does anyone know the typical slopes and
distances? And what gears the winners typically use? I couldn't find any of
this in googleworld.

2018-11-03 Thread Paul G
Interesting discussion as usual. I eeigh163 lbs and I sometimes wonder if my
61cm Roadeo is more stout than ideal. That sounds silly given that it's Riv's
lightest bike, but it has to be able to withstand 250 lbs of rider weight.

In the custom frame section of the Riv website, there's an explanation of how a
stock frame has to be built to safely support the heaviest rider any participle
size might have riding it. It explains that a custom allows taking advantage of
a rider's weight, particularly if they are lightweight.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2018-11-03 Thread Patrick Moore
Got it; the 57 is what I'd want; at least, I think so: are the sizes listed
measured center to center? If c-t, the 57 would be a 56 c-c and slightly
too small, though with the sloping tt I could probably get it to fit. I do
want a 56 to 57 cm top tube; 58.2 is too long, or at least so far less than
optimum that I'd choose something else. (In fact, the best fitting
flat-top-tube bike I've owned was 60 c-c X about 56.)

Getting back to Lum's experience (Lum: what is you real name again?) that
the Roadeo rides faster and easier than the Ram: I was thinking about this,
and I doubt it's a couple of lbs of weight. Some of the sprightliest bikes,
or at least, those that most encourage me to pedal faster -- my metric is
that I tend to use a 1-tooth smaller cog in back while cruising on the flat
-- that I've owned have been tanks; that Herse; the Matthews; an ancient
long-stayed Raleigh Technium, heavy tho' made largely from narrow tubed
aluminum; and ancient Schwin Tempo made from heavy Tenax tubing. Wheels
play a part, and so do tires, but IME there isn't a direct correspondence;
the Tempo had dog tires; the Herse used the tires I scavenged from a much
lighter (standard diameter 531 throughout) Motobecane and just felt faster.
Note: this comparison is wrt flatland cruising; other factors may interfere
with the feel of the bike while climbing; the Matthews is fast on the
flats, but feels much more ponderous on hills; of course, even 430 gram
rims and 450 gram tires with such a large diameter make a considerably
effectively heavier wheel than very light rims and light, narrow tires.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2018-11-02 Thread Patrick Moore
I'd guess that the principal reasons for the difference are cost and a more
general all-rounder use for the Roadini; the Roadeo is a high-end road bike
aimed at the club rider as an alternative to good if not top quality carbon
fiber frames -- heck, as an alternative to 15K carbon fiber frames, if it
comes to that. So small, incremental, but real improvements in weight and,
even more, that "springiness" that you feel with a top quality steel frame
are qualities that particular market will pay for.

Me, I'd love a Roadeo, but will not buy a Roadini. (Does anyone have a 58
to sell? (The 58 is 6-4-6, right?) -- Though I still wonder about getting
another 26-wheel road custom ...

[RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2018-11-02 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Grant will gladly discuss these issues with you, based on my experience
asking him about TAIHomer vs. Roadini vs. MUSARoadeo.
I was researching this all in depth for my latest purchase.
I wanted the lightest tubing set they make because I knew the usual Riv
8/5/8 frames fight against me on hills. Needed something that cooperates
better for me. I just can't power an 8/5/8. He understood that TaiHomer and
Roadini might not be what I am looking for.

The Roadeo is made specifically for road riding and not for
touring/commuting/off road. But I use it for all road riding, includung
commuting, because I carry small loads on the saddle bag and 6/4/6 works
better for me. Easier to get up hills. Noticeably.
I think the Legolas and MUSARoadeo are the thinnest tubing specs they ever
made on production bikes and they still make the mUSA Roadeo in regular
production for now. Legolas as a custom I think.

So for me, it was about getting a frame that just makes it easier to pedal
along.. The only thing I give up is the ability to use 42mm tires. But it
works great with 32mm tires and I am happy with that size. Cannot do
fenders unless I use 28mm tires. Of course, 42 with fenders would be great,
but then I would have to be on an 8/5/8 Rivbike, which I already know,
after owning 4 of them, that it would not be worth the hardship getting up
hills and fighting the bike. The 32mm is fine for me on the Roadeo. The
28mm with fenders on the Rambouillet as foul weather bike is fine. I can
always go back to 650b x 42 on the Ram if I want the wider tires and the
conversion works perfect on the Ram. Would not work good on Roadeo because
fendering a Roadeo would be harder to do as the chainstay bridge is really
far from where the fender would have to engage it. So, with these not being
one size fits all bikes, you have to think about what is the most important
for you and be willing to compromise on the rest or have a second bike to
fulfill your other wishes.

Hey Lum,

Appreciate you staying with me on these questions.

The next one being my 3rd Riv, I want to think it through a little more
before pulling the trigger. Hence all these questions.

The big question in my head is, with its specific deliberate design, how
heaver is Roadini as compared to Roadeo.

Another part I'm pondering (probably only the designer can answer) is if
their previous iteration of road bikes is lighter because of a different
thickness/tapering proportions, what's the compromise. There's got to be a
reason why they changed the design from Roadeo. Or is it that due to the
type of tubing/material, the lighter (yet strong enough) design is only
possible in MUSA frames?...

The 0.7 seat-post end is light. But that's the least stressed portion on a

1.1 length, but still giving it a lot of buckle-resistance.

Got it, Lum. You have perhaps done some research in this area. Do you

may change based on the frame size. If you happen to know the difference

[RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2018-10-29 Thread Ash
Lum,

Big congrats on losing 33 pounds!

Weight of both you and your bikes are heading in the same direction :)

I have read a few posts from you making a case for a lighter Riv. Now I'm
finally considering building one! Thinking whether to go with a Roadini or
MIT Hilsen.

Hilsen can be Jobst style go anywhere bike.

I ran into Riv brand while researching how to make my road bike more
comfier. This is a modern road bike Reynolds tubing, Campy gruppo, etc.
It is quite good. I raised the handlebar with steer tube extender and
what not, but the riding position (after 30 mins or so) never got to the
point of my liking. After riding Joe A with Albatross and later Bosco,
there was no going back.

The other evening I had prepped my road bike for riding up Mt Diablo next
morning. But in the morning, 5 mins before starting to drive to Danville I
decided to pick up Joe A (who's 12 lbs heaver), knowing that a lot of
climbing. This is how much I prefer the comfort that Grant's design offers
(riding position/frame design, road imperfections getting absorbed up by
the stem/handlebar/tire combo etc). It was a harder to go up. Took
longer. Still I, somehow, enjoying being on Joe A's saddle than the other
bike.

Replacing the road bike with a Riv design might change things a bit. While
for most (70%?) of the rides (around the town rides, grocery/farmers market
trips, sight seeing trips to close by towns, rides with kid trailer..) will
still happen on Joe A (who sports 2" Schwalbe Almotions or WTB horizon
depending on the week), there are times I'd enjoy riding riding a lighter
bike: when I'm in a mood to ride bike to work occasionally (21 miles each
way) or going up one of the many mountains around here, etc.

So begins a new bike project...

like Columbus Tenax tubing. The 6-4-6 OS is like 8-6-8 STD. So a 0.1 mm
wall decrease helps with the planning.

Just be careful of denting on the DT, J Heine claims walls of < 0.5mm tend
to dent, especially the DT.

I have a Joe and test rode the MIT atlantis. The MIT Atlantis actually reminded
me of the Sam hillborne with the difference being 650B. I think it is the
shorter top tube. Personally I preferred the MIT Atlantis with the shorter top
tube and 650B to my current Joe. The Joe will probably go up for sale at some
point.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2018-10-28 Thread Ash
Hi Edgar,

Joe is 51cm.

Atlantis feels more nimble and quicker to pick up speed. Also relatively
stiffer. Joe A is more comfortable overall. It seems to absorb road
impressions better than my Atlantis. Perhaps because the frame is slightly
bigger. The tubing might be thinner than Atlantis too. Not sure. Or
maybe it is because of the fork design. Or it might be the wheels (Atlas
vs Cliffhangers). Hard for me to tell. Joe seems every so slightly
flexier. I enjoy it much better for longer rides. On the other hand
Atlantis feel more suited for loading up - that is relatively speaking.
Because I have loaded Joe with over 50lbs on a few occasions. Had no
problems. Atlantis feels ever so slightly more stable with weight.

hth,

Ash

[RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2018-10-24 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Of course weight matters. When climbing. It also matters if you live in a walk
up, like I do, and carry your bike up and down the stairs several times a day.
I don’t like ‘stupid’ weight, where there is zero thought to weight in the
design process. The basic bicycle is the greatest invention and should be
treated with respect if you pray at the throne of Bikedom. That means no stupid
heavy crap.

Weight matters when climbing. I have a much nicer day climbing up into the
Oregon Cascades on my very light S-works Crux, than I do on my full suspension
mountain bike or Atlantis. It feels far easier and is quicker up hills. If I
lived somewhere flat-ish, I wouldn’t care much about weight. I’d obsess over
rolling resistance instead. But I live in Bend and all the fun rides are up. I
enjoy my Atlantis more since I gave it an extreme drivetrain diet and dumped a
pound or two.

Esthetics: Most expensive and light components are kinda ugly and far from
classic and warm. Most of the heavy stuff is cheap and ugly. There seems to be
a narrow area where you get light, pretty and strong. Shopping seemed to get
hard, so I went with lightweight, and against the Riv esthetics with my
drivetrain. I am very fortunate that I was gifted a Sram XX1 gruppo which is
now on my Atlantis. I am happier and lighter with getting rid of two
chainrings, a full set of chain ring bolts, front shifter, derailleur and
cable, and aluminum cranks.

I have played with rear racks, going with a Tubus for awhile, but went to the
heavier Nitto as I use a Nitto stem and Nitto WTB dirtdrops from the eighties
and wanted some semblance of matchy-matchy. My bike is my only transportation
and has been for many years, and a strong rear rack is important for rather
heavy grocery loads, usually around forty to sixty pound loads. The Nitto rack
has more sway than the Tubus as it isn’t triangulated, and it weighs more, but
I prefer it. Weird. I guess matchy-matchy is more important than weight
somewhere in my emotions, because it makes no sense.

I am interested in how everyone pick a bike and components/accessories.
Emotionally? Logically? A mix? How much do looks matter? Efficiency? I would
think that most on here pick emotionally, as Rivendells tickle the beauty
button and the Riv lifestyle is warm and easy, versus high tech plastic clothed
people, and bikes with six hundred dollar power meters and computers and
electronic shifting, who usually ride smileless doing intervals. I have high
tech bikes and my Atlantis. I ride my Atlantis constantly, and my other bikes
only to ‘train’ for summer bikepacking. My high tech plastic bikes are just
appliances, and my Atlantis is a classic Triumph cafe motorcycle, which I LOVE.
For me, I think it is the lugs.

I want to emotionally bond and buy a Gus boots as my new “the one”, but the
lack of lugs and other major issues, don’t twang my heartstrings. From past
experiences I know the ride quality alone does not cover up an appliance. My
Crux rides like a magic carpet, but is attractive like a cheap refrigerator. A
bikepacking and car replacement bike needs to be a reasonable weight, at least
here climbing in the Oregon Cascades, unless you are a masochist. A simple
straight tubed frame with lugs and a sloping tube with 2.8 tire clearance would
be my ultimate Riv. The sloping top tube would allow me to run a suspension
seatpost AND a HiteRite for bikepacking, the lugs would make it beautiful and
the simple clean design would be efficient both in rear cable routing and
tubing weight. As of now, I am ‘weighting’ on the changes on the Gus before I
have a custom lugged frame made, or buy a Ti bikepacker such as the Ti Fargo or
Bearclaw.

Heartstrings? Or less ‘shut up legs, the bike isn’t heavy’?

I am curious on everyone’s feelings about how you decide on a bike so I can
figure out how I decide. 類 浪 I think any bike I buy will be inferior to my
Atlantis, and I fear the expensive purchase. How to decidesigh. I know it
won’t be ‘stupid’ heavy (designed with no respect to weight) unless it is so
beautiful I don’t care. I haven’t seen a bike like that though...

I know the theory but not sure I subscribe to the RBW “weight ruse”.

You have to get that bike up that hill somehow. So that weight counts.

I lost thirty-three pounds of fat off my body this summer on keto diet and the
hills are still tough. But 22lb Roadeo makes it way easier than 25lb Ram and
27lb Sam and 27lb Bleriot.

[RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2018-10-24 Thread PG
(This is group is sophisticated enough to understand there's a lot more
going on than the objective weight of a bike. So bear with me. I know I'm
preaching to the choir...)

I had two interesting experiences about 10 years ago regarding bike
weight...and both happened at the end of the same ride.

I pulled into the lot where I was parked on my Rambouillet. I had just
finished an 80 mile ride, and was tired and happy. When I dismounted, I
rolled my bike over to car and hoisted it up into the back of my van. I was
shocked how heavy it felt. I realized that because the bike was so balanced
weight-wise and handling-wise, it felt light as a feather as I rode, even
after 80 miles. It was at that moment that I stopped thinking about bike
weight.

A few minutes later a friend, who was a bike racer, came driving up and got
out of his car. He asked if he could ride my bike amount the lot for a
minutes. He wanted to see what a leather saddle felt like. Before he
mounted, he gave the frame a quick lift to check the weight, and was
utterly horrified.

Long story short, after riding around the lot for a while, he was grinning
from ear to ear. Ten years later, he subscribes to BQ, rides a touring
frame, and swears he has more fun than he ever did back in his weight
weenie racer days.

My 62cm Hunqapillar weighs between 33 and 36 lbs, depending on rack,
wheelset, tires.

Lightest configuration is like this, but with 38mm Compass Barlow Pass
tires: https://goo.gl/photos/wcx2zxSLPC8kDdbC6
(Counting the rack and basket, not counting the lock, bags, tools.)
Oh, here's one with the right tires: https://goo.gl/photos/zoafhFJTGJ2Y9Yes8

Heaviest config is with a Nitto 27F rack on the front and 2.35 inch
Schwalbe Big One tires. Here's the right rack, but not the right tires:

lives in VT, so a build list would be approximate.

Bumping this old thread:

Weighed my 56cm Riv Atlantis (Toyo build, if it matters)

*24.6lbs *w/ the Mavic Crossmax and RTP tires and no weight-saving parts
taken into consideration. I built it up as my gravel/dirt bike. Would be
nice to get it lighter but this is good enough. Might try tubeless ;)

2014-10-24 Thread DS
Finally got around to this:

48cm Hunqapillar w/ 2.1 smart sams, standard build kit w/ albastache bars,
front nitto mini rack, and 2 water bottle cages (without water bottles):
28.4 lbs
55cm Cheviot with standard build kit, shimano dynohub, luxos b light, nitto
mini front rack, pletscher rear rack, dyno tail light, water bottle cage,
walde medium basket, bell, sks fenders - 38 lbs. 42 lbs with lock and
sackville shopsack

Also, for comparison, Gunnar sport with front nitto mini rack, 2x9 shimano
105 drivetrain (brifters), 2 water bottle cages (empty) - 23 lbs

I have to say, i love the cheviot, its new, but hauling a 40 lb bike up and
down steps and through a tight storage area that needs me to basically
almost lift it up over my head to get out, and then up and down the BART
stairs is a huge pain in the ass. I may need to balance it out with some
sub 20 lb fixie bike with zero attachments.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2014-10-24 Thread Patrick Moore
Weight! Weight! Weight! Sounds like my (skinny and tall) 13-year-old
daughter (alas).

I just weighed my Fargo: just under 33 lb with at-least-3-lb saddlebag and
contents; this is the off road equivalent of a 58 cm frame. All bolt on
accessories, which for this one amounts to 4 nylon bottle cages and clip on
light mounts. (Lights clip on; mounts bolt or strap on.)

Gofast: weighed sans bag: 17.24 lb; the same digital suitcase scale very
nicely took off .24 lb since the last time I weighed it and I hope for
further reductions. All bolt-on accessories.

Didn't weight the Ram or the commuter, but guess ~25 lb and ~23 lb, no bags
but with lights and all bolt on accessories.

[RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2014-08-15 Thread shawn m.
I get the 'how much does it weigh? question a lot from guys riding
Cervelos for some reason. My answer is always the same: lift with your
knees... My 54cm Hunqapillar is racked and fendered and basketed with a
large saddlesack, so it's in the same ballpark as the others here have
mentioned, but I don't actually know. When I had my Hillborne, I was
killing time before a catching a train at my friend's bike shop. He
couldn't help himself, had to weigh it, fully loaded for a tour. 71 pounds
of bike and gear. No big deal. :)

Re: [RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2014-08-15 Thread Patrick Moore
I remembered to weight the Fargo last night -- using a hi tek, $8 Deal
Extreme digital luggage scale: T handle gauge with nylon strap. Removed the
very large Jandd Mountain Wedge (big enough for a change of clothing --
pants and shirt -- if you roll tightly, this in addition to tubes, tools,
and Lezyne), so bare nekkid except for 3 bottle cages. 29.5 lb (actually
varied between 28 and change and 29.7, but more readings in the mid-29
range).

Riv #3 -- 58 cm c-c 559 wheeled fixie -- newly washed, 3 readings: 22.34,
22.63, 22.7 for average of 22.56 lb with lights, HpX, 2 Irises, and half
full medium sized Ruthworks wedge with 2 tubes and various small tools --
surprised me at how light it is.

#2 gofast (57 c-c fixed, one bottle cage) steady at 17.75.

[RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2014-08-15 Thread stonehog
I have two Rivs and weighed them in at normal running weight with
tools/bags/pump included.

The first one up is my grey/maroon Hunqapillar - 54cm = *39 lbs*
Includes full racks/basket/bag for camping:

1. Tubus Cosmo rear rack
2. Haulin' Colin front rack (custom)
3. large Wald basket
4. Medium Sackville with tools
5. Brooks B17 w/Nitto S83 seatpost
6. XD600 double
7. Thin Gripsters
8. Albastache w/Nitto Dirt Drop 10cm stem
9. Bell, frame pump, 3 bottle cages
10. Sykes wood fenders
11. Velocity Synergy rims
12. Clemente X'plor MSO tires
13. Schmidt 28 Dyno, BM Cyo IQ light and tailight
14. kickstand

Next up - '09 A. Homer Hilsen - 59cm = *29 lbs*

Rando setup:

1. Swift Industries Paloma handlebar bag
2. Honjo hammered 45mm fenders
3. Rene Herse crank
4. Thin Gripsters
5. XS Sackville tool bag with tools
6. Velocity A23s rims
7. Jack Brown Greens
8. Selle Anatomica saddle with Thompson seatpost
9. Nitto Noodle 42cm with Nitto 10cm lugged stem
10. Bell, frame pump, and 3 bottle cages
11. Schmidt dyno hub and Edelux and BM taillight
13. kickstand

For what it's worth, I also weight the current rando bike, my 57cm Velo
Routier (Cycle Toussaint) with a very similar build and size to the Homer,
and it came in 1 lb heavier at *30 lbs*. The build differences on the
Toussaint are:

1. 650b - Hetre ELs
2. Acorn Tall Boxy Rando bag with tools
3. Speedplay Frog pedals
4. Berthoud 50mm steel fenders
5. Pacenti PL23 rims

I have a 20.5 lbs SimpleOne with magnesium bottom bracket, Brooks titanium,
Paul levers and cantis, JB greens, Phil 36h (can probably drop some weight with

Minimizing the weight was just for kicks as the bike is regulated to family

Don't hold your breath. Jan doesn't ride a Rivendell (even though he still

[RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2014-08-08 Thread ted
Since I'm not doing anything with a point this evening anyway
Ridable bikes on hand minus anything not bolted or zip tied on:

~53cm Gios road race bike, ~19.5 lbs (circa '80 weight weeny-ish steel w/
mostly current parts for ref)
mostly campi 10sp ergo, cane creek weight weeny brakes, Ritchey wcs bars,
syncros quill stem, ti rail selle italia turbo, suntour superbe pro post,
speedplay x pedals, 1 ac cage, 1 arundel sport cage.

56cm AHH ~23.0 lbs
32h lx/synergy wheels w/ soma GR green tires, xcd rd, old nr fd, shim 9sp
dt shifters, rh cranks, misc cartridge bb, frog pedals, nitto stem dream
bars, old dia-comp areo levers, 559 brakes, s83 post, ti rail san marco
rolls w/ kludged brass rail bag loop substitute, 2 king cages, 1 nitto tire
cage

52cm Sam Hillborne ~25.6 lbs
32h lx/synergy wheels w/ non force field rumpkin tires, stndrd RBW most
everywhere, lugged nitto post, b17., sneaker pedals, albatross bars, 1 king
cage

56cm SimpleOne ~28.2 bs
son front hub, vo fixed/free rear, vo pbp rims, jack brown green tires,
superbe pro track crank, phil bb, lyotard mb pedals w/ clips n straps,
nitto stem rb019 bars, s83 post, selle italia turbo, longboards, nitto
mini, nitto top, wald med., edelux, bm linetec, pletscher kick stand, 2
king cages

52 cm Bombadil ~28.8 lbs
32h lx/synergy w/ Quasi-Moto tires, xt rd, cx70 fd, sugino xd2 wide low
double, very old sugino loose ball bb, mks urban pedals w/ clips n straps,
cr720 cantis, 9sp shim on paul thumbies, large bullmoose bar, lugged nitto
post, b17, 3 king cages, pletscher kick stand.

~56/53 long bike ~46.2 lbs (bonus fun bike)
531 super-tourist, RBW fork crown, very RBW build, albatross in front,
bosco stoker, b17 for both, sneaker pedals, nitto big back rack, nitto mini.

I/we are very pleased with all of em (well the Gios may be too small), but
that took longer than I thought it would. This weight stuff is indeed
insidious, and best eschewed. Riding round the block a few times on any one
of them would have been a much better plan.

I would have figured the XO to be a couple lbs lighter but I have some
junky Kenda 1.95 tires and a B67 saddle that probably account for a pound

Interesting exercise. I weighed mine w bags, pumps, repair/patch kits, lights,
but with no water bottles, in other words as they would be ridden:
1) Riv Road Custom, 61.5cm, standard build w brifters, Carradice saddlebag,
28mm tires, 26 lbs.
2) Quickbeam, 60cm, with Nitto M12 front rack w Wald basket, medium sackville
bag, banana bag, two freecogs on the flip-flop back, JB tires, 30 lbs (wow!).
3) Legolas, 62cm set up in Rando mode with brifters, Nitto M12-like rack and
Acorn handlebar bag, Carradice saddlebag, Longboard fenders, dynamo hub
light, 32mm tires, 31.5 lbs.

When I had my frame powder coated, I called Riv up for frame decals, but
the only ones they could provide are the fragile decals that need a clear
coat, which I didn't want to do. I found an online company that makes
custom frame decals that you can design yourself. I have forgotten the name
of the company though. Sorry. I just ordered Riv's Ressurecto stickers and
might use those on the down tube for Urban anti theft camo. Maybe.

There are no weenier weight weenies than the Camping weight weenies, so I
set up a minimalist S24O kit. I took my 27 lb double speed (with HA
Panniers) and added:

Hammock + sleeping bag + VBL + stuffable pillow
stove + pot + utensils + cup + coffee kit + firestarters
parka + skull cap + tights + nighshirt headlamp
can opener beer opener bandana

34.0 lbs with no food and no water, and no whiskey.

I can substitute my solo tent and thermarest for my hammock and add 750g.
