Declan, Saw your bugs when you filed them the first time and also the email to the forum. One thing that is very helpful is if in your ML exchanges regards bugzilla reporting your include your bug ID. Yours are: fdo#60218 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60218 for Writer text wrapping fdo#60228 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60228 for Writer/Impress non-playing videos fdo#60229 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60229 for BUGZILLAASSISTANT use with Safari - OSX 10.6.8 SnowLeopard All well written with exception that you did not identify what version of OS X and hardware. Your fdo#60228 is a know issue duplicating fdo#56847 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=56847 , so yours will probably be closed and merged. I have confirmed your fdo#60218 as also valid on Windows 7 64-bit under LibreOffice 4.0.0 Please respond to any dev requests regards any of the bugs, and always appropriate to refine your submissions with additional details as you think of them or find work arounds. [libreoffice-users] Re: promotion possibility for LibO
rosttyo wrote Can this be forwarded to our marketing people to possibly use this for promotion? @rossttyo, Sure, but not clear what you are suggesting. LibreOffice's import of SVG has been very good since at least the 3.3 builds and fidelity to standards when editing imported SVG in Draw is still improving. You may want to work a bit in a current LibreOffice build with images from the Open Clipart site. You'll find that ALL LibreOffice components will correctly import and render the SVG to bitmap directly. And you'll find that Draw can directly open for edit these SVGs with some loss of format--mainly with transparency issues. Admittedly it would be nice to natively work/save in SVG rather than using export from Draw ODG. But, then I would probably be using the FOSS Inkscape http://inkscape.org project if I were doing any substantive vector art work as SVG. So what is it you were suggesting that LiberOffice Marketing promote regards this stale OpenOffice era blurb? [libreoffice-users] Re: promotion possibility for LibO
ROSt52, Ok, understand your intent a little better. The text you found is a *very* outdated FAQ entry on the OpenClipArt Library (OCAL) project. Here is a valid link http://openclipart.org/faq#How_can_I_use_these_images_in_OpenOffice.org.3F . It should be updated, as the support for SVG graphics in LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice pretty much being maintained on a common code base by its primary developer Armin Le-Grand, a contributor to both projects. The FAQ usage details for both office products could be the same text. But, as Tom suggests, to have the FAQ entry corrected, someone on the OCAL project will have to be contacted. They look to have an active mailing list, at http://freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/clipart http://freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/clipart --suggestion for an edit would not need to come from TDF LibreOffice Marketing, so feel free. [libreoffice-users] RE: Libre Office 4 and MS Sysprep
John, Hmm, not sure that in Windows 7 using Sysprep and using WAIK to prepare a CopyProfile=true Specialize stanza into a filename.xml reliably overwrites the default user run from any user other than the Administrator account running in Audit mode. Not sure what happens with file associations and per program user configurations if you use an account other than Administrator in Audit mode. But my sysprep.exe /generalize /oobe /unattend:filename.xml SYSPREPs prior to image capture seems to behave pretty well with customizations done in audit mode being copied into a new default user profile and apps running correctly. Only a few issues with occasional linkage to C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming for program configuration and temp space--but not LibreOffice. I've had no problems with desktop icons placed on the C:\Users\Public\Desktop On the file association side, I don't deploy with LibreOffice set as default for anything but its native ODF formats, so I can't comment there about SYSPREPs impact, not too surprised if MS allows SYSPREP to clobber some file associations. And, there are continuing problems with the LibreOffice file associations that make the whole issue kind of dicey. We have an enhancement request in place for a File Association Manager for Windows builds of LibreOffice (fdo#44462 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44462 ) Stuart From: Hallenberger, John - FSC Tech [hallenberg...@fox.k12.mo.us] Sent: Thursday, March 14, 2013 1:44 PM To: users@global.libreoffice.org Subject: [libreoffice-users] Libre Office 4 and MS Sysprep I have created an image of Windows 7 x64 and LO4 using sysprep. Is this by design or are there special steps I need to take during the sysprep process? Basically what I would like is for all LO programs to have their default save type as their Microsoft equivalents and icons on the desktop already setup in the default user so that whoever logs in is basically ready to go. [libreoffice-users] Re: Hyperlink Bug in calc - bug 62289
Actually the bug is exactly as described. Testing with LibreOffice 4.0.2 rc1 The problem is in interpreting an incomplete hyper link. 1) If the complete hyper link is entered Sheet 2.A2 it becomes #Sheet 2.A2 And movement to that sheet and cell is reliable. 2) If you insert the hyperlink without the cell reference, e.g. #Sheet 2, it takes you that sheet but looks to retain the last cell referenced, i.e. the landing cell is erratic. 3) And if as Tanstaafl reports in fdo#62289 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=62289 even if you use the GUI and select the numbers only page name, e.g. 3 so hyperlink is #3 ,the link is interpreted incorrectly and you remain on the same page--and apparently in that numbered row. So there is definitely an issue with the Target in Document GUI picker allowing an incomplete hyper link. Or equally an inconsistent parser/handling logic for incomplete hyperlink targets--would think that absent a complete hyperlink target, the parser should identify the sheet and default to a consistent cell--A1 I would imagine. [libreoffice-users] Re: Calc sheet freezing
Several ways of answering this come to mind, but I'll go with the gentler tact. You have some questions to ask yourself (and your collaborators). What is your desired end use--will this Excel 2003 spread sheet continue to be used on Excel 2003? If not will your use be exclusively on LibreOffice or a mix of Apache OpenOffice and LibreOffice? Do you or some number of your users understand what data is being charted and how? Are you (they) familiar with both the Microsoft macros and the LibreOffice macros? Where I'm going is that depending on your intended use, you will need to --port-- the spread sheet either for use in calc. But likely for use in Excel 2007, or 2010 or 2012-- there is that much variation in the macro scripting between the Microsoft products. Sorry, but without seeing the function and logic of your existing spread sheet, the most we'll be able to do is suggest steps in doing a port. -- View this message in context: http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/Calc-sheet-freezing-tp4048140p4048144.html Sent from the Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com. -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

[libreoffice-users] Re: Crashing OOo Creating Dialogs in the IDE
Andrew, Here is the link to download prior versions libreoffice/old http://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/ . With a couple of exceptions the x.x.x.2 are the rc2 that become final for each build. So do you think there was a bug--or not? As LibreOffice diverges from Apache Open Office, issues of Macros and support for scripting environments is evolving. No specifics, but would not be surprised by something being done to enhance Python could impact StarBase. So if you think there was an issue go ahead and post up your bug report, even though it has seemed to resolve, that way there is a permanent record if there really is an issue with active macros or with complex document formats like your text. For what it is worth, I grabbed a current copy of your OOME_30.odt and had it open in a current Apache OpenOffice build AOO400m1(Build:9700) - Rev. 1463876, Rev.1448553, and it crashed there, so who knows. The first one has been assigned to someone. Actually, FDO bug 44871 has been assigned since the date it was submitted during QA bug triage. But that means exactly squat since Cedric did not assign himself (indicating he accepted and was working on it). Assignment is just not a tool that has a lot of meaning in the LibreOffice project (and most other FOSS) because, as has been mentioned, development and quashing of bugs is driven by the interests of the respective developers. Some developers will assign to themselves, some will not--personal choice. Maybe there's hope after all, as I've got a list from long ago that I never bothered to file as these were never addressed and assigned, so I never bothered. Can't help but notice that in the ensuing time you have moved from OSX 10.6.8 to your current 10.8.3 build, yet YOU have not filed additional updates or status regards either issue. Truth is issues with OSX builds require a lot of care and feeding given the rapid changes to Apples APIs. If you want things fixed you have to be engaged and nurture the issues you raise. Please take the time to research the FDO Bugzilla ( https://bugs.freedesktop.org/query.cgi?format=advancedproduct=LibreOffice ) and if not already identified, submit as new issues items from your list. You should have a look at the OSX issues meta bug https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42082 and you'll get some idea. Regarding fdo#44871, the labeling as Distribute Rows Equally is clearly wrong. Its function is documented as Space Rows Equally -- Adjusts the height of the selected rows to match the height of the tallest row in the selection, which it does. So what you were really asking for is an enhancement. Which as was pointed out in comments to 44871 would receive the best review on the UX-Advise list. Did you follow up there? Just looked and saw no record. So, I've opened a new enhancement request in fdo#64242 and asked the UX-Advise list for discussion--essentially for handling Table columns and rows the UX is a bit muddled between Distribute and Equal Spacing actions. Sometimes a few different people would put small amounts for the same thing so the dev would get several beers or even enough for something useful like rent or a new power-supply, or keyboard or something. A mailinglist allowing messages from non-subscribers is imho mis-configured. That is correct! [libreoffice-users] Re: Horizontal lines (rules) disappeared from Insert menu
The Insert -- Horizontal Rule feature was removed at the 4.0.0 release, including its gallery of graphics objects. And it was not replaced. There is an active bug fdo#60858 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60858 , and discussion in the UX-Advise http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/How-to-provide-horizontal-rule-paragraph-separators-tt4061353.html functional design forum. For now, working in Writer, only capability is the manual insertion of a graphic as separator, or using text entry to format the paragraph style to include a paragraph boundary marking on the bottom edge. That is done, while completing a paragraph, by immediate keyboard entry of a triplet of: - (dash), _ (underscore), = (equal), * (asterisk) , ~ (tilde) or # (hash). And each will apply direct formatting creating a bottom edge border for the paragraph. -- View this message in context: http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/Horizontal-lines-rules-disappeared-from-Insert-menu-tp4063114p4063122.html Sent from the Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com. -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
[libreoffice-users] Re: styles for plays?
Helen, Interesting issue. The manual centering is simply multiple tabs ,\t, or multiple space characters. Replace the multiple occurrences with nothing to remove it and bring all text to left margin. Get all the formatting removed so you are left with just the text. The key to your effort is to remove the direct styling from the text, and apply document wide styling to paragraphs. Choose from existing styles, or create new style sto apply against paragraphs, fonts, pages of each play as you'd like. If you are comfortable extracting the XML text component--content.xml-- from the .odt container you can flush it through the stream editor--sed. Or gawk, or perl, or python, etc. to make editing corrections (removing white space and joining actor to their lines with a colon). Then return the edited content.xml back to the .odt container, and then apply consistent styles from LibreOffice. However, working within Writer--you can accomplish much of the text clean up using the find-replace GUI widget. Open the + other options panel, and select the regular expression checkbox. LibreOffice regular expressions are described here: https://help.libreoffice.org/Common/List_of_Regular_Expressions with a bit more detailed instruction here (panels are a bit different between LibreOffice and OpenOffice): http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/How_Tos/Regular_Expressions_in_Writer The other approach, would be to open the document and copy all contents out to a text file, then edit that with sed, gawk, perl or python--and insert the now consistent text into a new LibreOffice document and then apply styles to the text. If the entry for horizontal lines is not visible in the list of Paragraph Styles, select All Styles in the lower listbox. Well, there is no Horizontal Line Style listed even after selecting All Styles. No, it is there. open the Styles and Formatting window, first button on the Formatting toolbar (or just enter F11). When panel opens, if still set to install defaults, you'll be on the Paragraph tab with Default Style selected and the filter dropdown list set to Automatic. With that filter in place Horizontal Line is not a listed paragraph style. Change the drop down filter to ALL, or to HTML and you'll see the Horizontal Line. Unfortunately, the line weights for the paragraph border (just the bottom edge) set by the Horizontal Line style default settings are too thin. And the associated text handling for the paragraph style don't seem correct--but that could just be misuse on my part. Paragraph bottom border assigned as horizontal line with auto-replace of character triplets seem to have more reasonable default line weights--but since those are a direct styling of each paragraph, it is more efficient in the long run to figure out use of the style and formatting panel to handle whole document. RE: [libreoffice-users] HSLQLDB syntax
STOP! Anne, glad you're back but seriously? HSQLDB is the short title and Web address for HyperSQL, the Java language based SQL relational database that StarOffice then Sun chose as the imbedded database for the project. Currently we include the 1.8 release, and efforts will either see that ripped out of LibreOffice to be replaced, or the version of HSQLDB will be upgraded to a current 2.3 release. RE: [libreoffice-users] Conflicts?
Yes if one or both are fully installed (as opposed to /A administrative installs) they will interfere in subtle ways. Actions to mitigate: 1) Disable the Quickstarter for both during installation -- the TDF LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice versions will conflict--best if both are off. Done from AppWiz.cpl and a modify installation of both. 2) Also, only one or the other should have the Windows Explorer Integration enabled (it provides a thumbnail view of ODF documents) in Desktop or Thumbnail views in Windows Explorer (Desktop and other folder views). RE: [libreoffice-users] LO 4 install deletes 3.6
Virgil, Not sure how far down the rabbit hole you'd like to go, but the simple truth is that full installs of LibreOffice 3.x and LibreOffice 4.x use identical components of Microsoft Windows registry and system paths and are mutually exclusive. One can happily run multiple versions of LibreOffice (or a mix of LibreOffice and OpenOffice), but they will not be fully integrated with Microsoft Windows OS--and at any given time only one can be fully integrated with the Windows OS. Recognizing that this is the normal use case--that is how the LibreOffice installer behaves by default. If you need it to do something else you have to do more than click on the installer. And, fyi, the Apache OpenOffice installer behaves exactly the same, but is less functional in migrating user settings and supporting extensions. Stuart From: Virgil Arrington [cuyfa...@hotmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, July 23, 2013 7:52 PM To: users@global.libreoffice.org Subject: [libreoffice-users] LO 4 install deletes 3.6 In an attempt to compare the latest LO and AOO offerings, today I installed both LO 4.0.4 and AOO 4.0 on my Win7 machine. Until now, I have been happily using LO 3.6.6.2, having previously tried an earlier release in the LO 4 series. When I previously installed LO 4, I noticed that it seemed to uninstall my previous version of LO 3.6. After encountering some problems with LO 4, I uninstalled it and reinstalled LO 3.6. On the prior occasion, I just assumed that, when installing LO 4, I had inadvertently clicked some option to uninstall the old 3.6. So, today, when I installed LO 4, I was very careful to make sure that I did not check any box indicating my desire to uninstall LO 3.6.6.2. Nevertheless, LO 4 installed and, once again, my installation of LO 3.6.6.2 disappeared. Does anyone know if this is intentional behavior? It has happened to me now twice, and I’m 90% certain that it was not due to anything I did. If it is intentional, I find it most offensive. I can’t believe the TDF developers would be so presumptuous as to decide for me that I no longer want LO 3.6 on my system. This is the type of “let us think for you” behavior I would expect from MS, not from a FOSS project. btw, AOO 4.0 installed quite nicely *next to* AOO 3.4.1, and I am able to run both programs. RE: [libreoffice-users] Conflicts?
Steve, Well yes, but Windows has completely different application configurations for the Launchers on OS X, where manipulation of each programs .APP and some Plist values. And there are major differences in launcher setup with info.plist and each applications .app file when moving between OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8--indications are that won't even run on 10.9. And of course the mix of DE and application packaging on the Linux flavors is an interesting mix as well. So the three primary OS environments for configuring LibreOffice are different enough that we can't generalize across the OSs even though the code base is mostly in common. That is because installation/configuration is where things diverge the most. Windows is an ugly beast. Linux Kernels and Darwin have reasonable methods for the most part. Although Unity leaves me scratching my head on occasion. RE: [libreoffice-users] stable vs new
Folks, In opening this thread ( Nabble http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/stable-vs-new-tp4068750.html ) Tom is correct in a practical sense. Stability is an inherent component of a mature product. And testing during the development cycles by more potential user willing to invest a little time in QA is essential to the health of the project. But a key aspect Tom omits is that LibreOffice development and release stages are tightly timed--and by proxy so is its support. Nor does he mention that the project has stayed on schedule since inception--synchronizing to a six month minor release cycle implemented in a broader ecosystem of Free and Open Source Software. The Release Plan for LibreOffice publishes the release schedule, current status and a historical record of the project, worth a read: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Release_Plan Keeping to the time based release plan means that the delay between initial release on a minor version and the next minor version release is just six months. And that the delay between the x.x.0 release and each bug fix release has been and will continue to be just one month. So, while I don't completely agree Toms' assessment of how far along each bug fix takes things--it is just not the way the user feedback, QA,and development work proceeds--but it is not unreasonable practical advise. Support has kept to the same cycle--for the most part--user documentation (static HTML or wiki based, and published) can always use more active contributors and lags a bit as a result. This is not just development churn, there is solid User eXperience, QA and development work at every tick of the release cycle. And as a minor release nears end of its development life it gets less and less development attenetion--QA and development resources long since shifted to new development and bug fixes. Enhancements and bug fixes become more and more costly to push backward with each tick in development cycle--so less likely to occur. In a sense that also is stability, or maybe stagnation. The project is on sound footings as a time based release, that is not going to change so no sense in debating it here. Rather, if you have specific questions or comments about its implementation or how best to make use of software from time based release manged project that would be a worthwhile discussion. As a result of your description, I will have to repackage and install 3.6.7 after my monthly backup today. Absolutely, there is nothing wrong with continuing to use the earlier releases. Just be aware that the 3.6.x minor release will be designated EOL development status the 15th of this month. Meaning, it is a final release (for the minor and 3.6 major branch) No further patches will be accepted for the release and no project effort to fix compatibility or security issues. Support will continue in the mail list forum and the Ask site as well as Bugzilla issue tracking---but quality of that support will slack off as fewer users maintain a 3.6.x branch install. LibOReleaseLifecycle.png https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/images/2/2c/LibOReleaseLifecycle.png This graphic from the release plan presents a concise view of the project. With work on the master branch extending into the future, each minor release branch is categorized as release canidate, for Early adopters, for Recommended use, for Conservative use. With its EOL eminent, using 3.6.7 you would be well in the Conservative category--meaning simply that it is not the Project recommended category, which has shifted to the 4.0 major release--a 4.0.4 build. Please note, that when released at the end of the month--the 4.0.5 build will also transition to a conservative category. [libreoffice-users] Re: latest java update has broken my install of Libre Office.
Tom, Activating a Java Runtime Environment in LibreOffice 3.5.4 took a little while to complete its initial load following upgrade, but the JRE 1.7 update 5 does function correctly with JAB 2.02 installed with LibreOffice 3.5.4 on 64-bit Windows 7. So, not a problem with the LibreOffice Accesibility and the Assistive technology tools. Installation of the updates (32bit and 64bit versions from java.com) did not corrupt my LibreOffice user profile, and JAB 2.0.2 was not affected. The NVDA screen reader continues to work correctly with LibreOffice. So, the JRE installer is not the problem, and that leaves LibreOffice user profile configuration issues. I suspect you were just unluky this time round with the Java update misconfiguring some component of your profile. I beleive Bjørn's guidance to delete or to rename the *javasettings_Windows_x86.xml* file is the correct way to clear the issue by allowing your user profile to rebuild. Or you could completely remove your LibreOffice user profile and allow it to be rebuilt with defaults. The full profile is the folder located at *C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Roaming\LibreOffice\3\user* which can be renamed. [libreoffice-users] Re: latest java update has broken my install of Libre Office.
Tom, Java based programs on a Windows OS are frustratingly unstable when multiple Java Runtime Environments are present because of the way program configurations are pointed to the version of Java to call--registry entries, user environment variables, system environment variables. For stability, run with just one JRE--but don't allow it to update until convenient for you to monitor changes. You could jump in and immediately uninstall all things Java based (NVDA, Dolphin, JAB) and LibreOffice--and clean the registry. And then reinstall everything so configuration files are correct. But one simple option for additional troubleshooting would be to create a new user account on the computer. Login to it--and test your Java components. If JAB based utilities run, then check them in LibreOffice. And if while using the new account, JAB based programs fail (and they may), you probably will need to uninstall and reinstall. But if all is good for the new user account, the problem *is* configuration issue for you normal account, and you will need to dig into your Windows user profile. An uninstall, reinstall will fix either case but is tedious and error prone -- so use an uninstaller ( I prefer the VSRevo products with moderate registry clean-up, the free version is fine for 32-bit, but would need the Pro for 64-bit--has a modest license fee to use beyond trial period -- find them here: freeware 32-bit only -- http://www.revouninstaller.com/start_freeware_download.html pro version 32/64 -bit trial -- http://www.revouninstaller.com/download-professional-version.php ) Then reload these Windows programs in order: JRE 1.7u5 (this would now be the ONLY Java runtime on the system, with fresh configuration laid down) Java Access Bridge (use Jamal Mazrui's JWin installer from http://empowermentzone.com/JWin.htm ) Dolphin or NVDA (or both) (test that they're working) LibreOffice 3.5.4 (select the JRE, and activate Accessibility -- assistive technology tools) Obviously once Dolphin or NVDA come off you are likely to need some sighted assistance with the interface, but it should be brief and by running through the clean up this way--you will be more likely to have a stable and fully functioning system as an outcome. RE: [libreoffice-users] Libreoffice and Java
Bob, Review the LibreOffice Java configuration file with notepad, it is located at C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\LibreOffice\3\user\config\javase ttings_Windows_x86.xml Note that it has stanzas for Location and Version details--those must match the version of the 32-bit Java JRE you are attempting to run. If you have an entry in your PATH environment variable pointing to a 32-bit JRE, then deleting the javasettings_Windows_x86.xml configuration file will allow it to be rebuilt with the correct JRE details for your system. This delete/rebuild during version upgrades is just part of housekeeping that needs to happen. If you don't allow the rebuild--then the old JRE 1.6 configuration file will always fail with a 1.7 version JRE. As to dropping use of a JRE--this link shows exactly the LibreOffice components that have a Java dependency. https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/Java Stuart -Original Message- From: Bob McDonald [mailto:bob.mcdon...@pcn-inc.com] Sent: Friday, August 24, 2012 7:23 AM To: users@global.libreoffice.org Subject: [libreoffice-users] Libreoffice and Java I'm having a bit of a bother with any version of Libreoffice installed with JRE 1.7 on Windows 7. RE: [libreoffice-users] Libreoffice and Java
Folks should understand that the Java Accessibility Bridge foundation for LibreOffice Assistive Technology and Accessibility Tools is one of the primary components entirely dependent on a functional JRE? Java is going to be with us in LibreOffice long after JRE 1.6 has been dropped from Oracle support. Dealing with JRE 1.7 configuration is necessary now and in the future. So, JRE 1.6u34 is the latest release of that branch and JRE 1.7u06 is the latest of that branch. But, both are completely functional with LibreOffice when properly configured, and both support Java Accessibility Bridge and Assistive Technology and the Accessibility Tools in LibreOffice. The problem is when they are not configured correctly. Java Access Bridge, LibreOffice AT, and LibreOffice in general require use of a 32-bit JRE to work seamlessly. Users on 64-bit Windows are tripped up by the Oracle JRE installers (or Ninite installer packaging) that generically install the 64-bit JRE. It is the generic Windows centric installation--of executables copied into the C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folders that causes most problems for LibreOffice Java Access Bridge dependent users of LO Accessibility Tools. Simply put, the wrong version of the JRE gets called. To avoid that for JRE, JAB and LibreOffice AT users, forcing a proper configuration requires removal of the generic executables and inclusion of the JRE into system PATH variable. Convention says use a JAVA_HOME variable, but the full path to the JRE bin directory is just as effective, e.g. append ;C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin to the PATH variable. Sounds simplistic, but if you start with a solid 32-bit JRE install, the JAB will go on cleanly (use the JWin tool). Follow that with NVDA or commercial screen reader, and then a LibreOffice 3.6.1 installation. Which now offers Accessibility support during installation and startup. Additionally, for users that had a JRE 1.6 installation and had problems following a JRE 1.7 upgrade. Doing an upgrade to JRE 1.7 does not clear the JRE 1.6 configuration that LibreOffice had been using--and suspect there are JAB and other assistive technologies that will also have broken configurations. The most reliable way is to remove it all and start from the JRE installation. But for certain, with LibreOffice the configuration has to be manually cleared--and allowed to rebuild with correct JRE 1.7 details. A JRE 1.6 installation would be just as trouble prone if it were not configured correctly. RE: [libreoffice-users] Libreoffice and Java
Tom, Great idea--paste away. Feel free to edit my ramblings since I can be a bit verbose. But it gets even better, at least on the accessibility side (remembering though that a functioning Java JRE is required for other LO components). So now, in addition to JavaFX, Oracle has bundled Java Access Bridge v2.0.3 into the JRE 1.7u6; it is installed by default but is left inactive when a patch-in-place upgrade of JRE is done. I think the toggle between JAB active and inactive is going to be an issue during LO installation and use. http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/technotes/guides/access/enable_and_test.html#enabling_jab Jamal Mazrui's JWin JAB installer isn't obsolete, probably still the way to go for a clean JAB v2.0.2 installation, especially with a JRE 1.6u34 install. But I've sent Jamal a note suggesting it might be time to rework the JWin installer. Also, I have an open bug https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54064 of how I think the JRE and JAB bit me during a LO 3.6.1.2 (RC2) test installation--manifested as an installer hang at java with incomplete LO user configuration build for a non-privileged user account. Haven't yet attempted to reproduce to verify--but reopened the bug for review as I believe it is a Java JRE / JAB related installation issue that will need some work. Heikki, Recent work on the LibO Windows Explorer extension (shlxthdl.dll) has caused the issue reported in referenced bugs. And is probably not at all related to the the Sun/Oracle JRE in use. Reinstall the 3.6.1.2 after your backup and uninstall. But this time perform a custom installation and uncheck the Windows Explorer extension. The shlxthdl folder and the .dll will not even be installed. Clearing off all your Sun/Oracle Java Runtime Environments, and then installing just a single current Oracle JRE is really just routine maintenance that will result in a more stable Windows system. [libreoffice-users] wiki.documentfoundation.org - Vote_for_Enhancement: Implement the IAccessible2 accessibility API
Folks, I've placed Bug 39956 - Implement the IAccessible2 accessibility API onto the Document Foundation Vote for Enhancements wiki found here: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Vote_for_Enhancement Most folks would be surprised to find just how spotty and incomplete Accessibility and Assistive Technology tools offered with LibreOffice are. But, I think all can agree that the current UNO - Java Accessibility Bridge continues to present Java Runtime Environment configuration issues for Windows. While Linux/Unix users supported with ATK and AT-SPI have had it better, there are a fair number of unresolved AT issues that affect all LibO/AOo users. Emerging AT-SPI2 efforts of the Open Accessibility (A11y) Group that require integration into LibreOffice are backing up. Implementing IAccessibility2 (NOT a trivial technical issue) would improve accessibility and Assistive Technology tools across all implementations of LibreOffice, and during the effort would present an opportunity to fully implement A11y recommendations. Please review the issues affecting this often overlooked aspect of LibreOffice, and let the BOD and Developer community know more consistent and complete accessibility support is an effort worth pursuing by commenting on the Vote for Enhancements wiki. RE: [libreoffice-users] RE: Libreoffice and Java
Yes, that is correct. Would still be broken if you don't also clean up the javasettings .xml configuration file. Additionally, for folks on a 64-bit build of Windows, if you install both a 32-bit and a 64-bit JRE, you need to watch which JRE gets called with LibreOffice. Oracle installers place copies of latest installed executable into the C:\Windows\system32 (the 64-bit executables), and also in C:\Windows\SysWOW64 (for the 32-bit executables). They are copied from the respective installation directories of the JREs, but with a default installation these executables will be found before any other instance referred by the PATH environment, so they are the JREs used by default--and that can cause problems if not expected (as can issues with location of a MS C++ runtime not being present with the Java virtual machine libraries). To convince yourself, leave the C:\Windows copies intact and run a Command Window, and then execute java -version, if you have the 64-bit JRE installed and you will see the version labeled as 64-bit build--not the 32-bit. And that also seems to causes problems for LibreoOffice which on Windows remains 32-bit. To precisely control which JRE is used, you have to remove the executables from the system32 and SysWOW64 directories, and then establish a specific location on the PATH for them. Can be anywhere in the PATH environment variable, but for security after the Windows OS components. Also by convention you can create a JAVA_HOME environment variable and use a %JAVA_HOME%\bin reference in the PATH. Very useful (and the norm in Linux) in that you can programmatically change the JAVA_HOME variable when you need a different JRE (either the version or use of a 64-bit build). And, as Pedro notes, if you are on a 64-bit Win7 system you must install the 32-bit JRE and be sure LibO is using that executable. RE: [libreoffice-users] Re: Can someone on OS X verify a writer bug?(bugzilla-link inside)
(1) No, IIRC Apple does not use the Java Accessibility API and Java Access Bridge for its native Aqua/Cocoa NSAccessibility framework as used in VoiceOver. And OOo/LibO accessibility libraries make use of roles from NSAccessiblity framework to support OS X builds. But for development/implementation of non-Aqua/Cocoa Java accessible applications under OS X, a JRE and Java Access Bridge is required on OS X. So, with Oracle now building the JRE used by OS X, it could conceivably be having an impact on the Apple Accessibility APIs. (2) The Java Access Bridge is capable of supporting all assistive technologies that are implemented in Java, but most defined roles came from the earlier Microsoft work on MSAA and IAccessible. The a11y accessibility working group has moved beyond that with IAccessible2, ATK/GAIL and AT-SPI efforts. And of course Microsoft is doing its own thing for Windows, replacing the MSAA/IAccessible with UI Automation. Both the Accessibility wiki and the Java wiki documentation can use more work. [libreoffice-users] Reality Check - Windows Java Accessibility API non-functional for ALL LibreOffice 3.6.x releases to date
LibreOffice versions 3.6.0 and later have not correctly implemented the Java Access Bridge (JAB) modules used to expose the Java Accessibility API roles for Windows users. It took me a little while to work out the testing methods, but the Oracle test utilities JavaFerret-32 and JavaMonkey-32 show that LibreOffice is not implementing the Java Accessibility API and therefore does not expose accessibility roles to Assistive Technologies. Neither JAB v.2.0.2 or v 2.0.3, nor current JRE version 1.6u35 or 1.7u7 will make a difference. I tested LibreOffice builds 3.6.0.4, 3.6.1.2, 3.6.2.2, and 3.6.3.1 none of which are functional. In addition today I completed testing of ALL builds of LibreOffice from 3.4.5 to 3.5.7rc2. With exception of the 3.5.0 build they all correctly map Java Accessibility API roles to UNO Accessibility roles. The Java Accessibility API is not as comprehensive as the IAccessible2 role mappings provided by IBM Lotus Symphony 3.0.1, but it is functional for the 3.4 and 3.5 releases of LibreOffice. And, for these versions Windows Assistive Technologies will work. For example, the Windows NVDA screen reader will function with cursor control and component announcements for the entire document tree. Windows versions of LibreOffice 3.6, including the current build 3.6.3 rc1, are NOT USEABLE with Assistive Technologies and they have not been usable with Windows Assistive Technologies at any point. For folks that I've mislead with my insistence that all is well with LibreOffice 3.6 and Java Access Bridge and JRE with use of Assistive Technologies like NVDA screen reader I was wrong--I apologize. I've updated the FDO#53474 (http: bug report https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53474 ) and would encourage folks to vote, i.e. comment on, the enhancement to implement IAccessible2 API ( http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Vote_for_Enhancement ) for Windows builds by incorporating the IBM contributed Symphony code base as a replacement of the Java Accessibility API as that is probably the fastest means of bringing Windows builds of LibreOffice to the same functional level as Linux builds that use the ATK AT-SPI accessibility APIs. RE: [libreoffice-users] Is it safe to install Java for OS X 2012-006 1.0
Guy, Only one way to find out for sure ;) However, with Apple turning over maintenance of the Java JRE for OSX to Oracle, you have little choice. You might poke around and see what has been said on the various Apple forums in general about stability of the upgraded JRE, but you should not have substantive issues with LibreOffice. As to needing to refresh your Java-applet plugins, probably a good idea since those tend to be the vectors for security compromises that the updated JRE repairs. [libreoffice-users] Use of MD5 and other HASH values of LibO package downloads and alternate distribution DVD uploads
Tim, We applaud the work you've been doing on the English-NA-DVD, but since you've taken on that responsibility its cradle to grave handling also requires that you validate receipt of the initial ISO image upload to the Document Foundation Mirrors. TDF will take your upload of bundled components and post it exactly as they receive it. Followed by TDF implemented MirrorBrain metadata service that calculates the initial HASH values (MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and BitTorrent) and publishes the details for use on the download mirrors. Point is, they won't normally test that they have a good upload from your build system--that responsibility is yours. And to add to your effort, to be technically correct you should probably verify the HASH value of each component installer you download for use in the compilation--found most conveniently at the http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/ where you probably want the stable/ tree (and can check on your box/ DVD distro). Navigate down into the build you are compiling and the OS. On the page listing the language specific installers each file will have a corresponding MirriorBrain provisioned link labeled Details that has full metadata of just that file including the HASH values. Check each package you will bundle against those values so you know you have a clean download. You probably don't want to be responsible for distributing a corrupt install package that was incompletely downloaded as you build the DVD. Then, once compiled into your English-NA-DVD .iso image, you need to calculate a HASH value of the ISO being uploaded. You need this to compare what you send against what the transfer server receives. After upload, or probably once published to the TDF mirror, compare the HASH value(s) the MirrorBrain published metadata. When uploading or downloading I generally will calculate and compare against the first few digits of MD5 and SHA256 HASH values As an example, since you are on a Linux, you have the terminal window command line use of these commands: md5sum LO-3.5.6_English-NA-DVD_all-platforms_multi-lang_plus-extras_v2.iso sha1sum LO-3.5.6_English-NA-DVD_all-platforms_multi-lang_plus-extras_v2.iso sha256sum LO-3.5.6_English-NA-DVD_all-platforms_multi-lang_plus-extras_v2.iso Folks on Windows don't have a Microsoft provided digest tool--command line or GUI. But there are many to be found. Because of the range of digest HASH types I have to deal with I prefer a digest tool integrated with the Windows shell and widely use the freeware Hash CRC tool published in the fileTweak utilizes of Febooti. Available here: http://www.febooti.com/downloads/ Installed as administrator, it then gives ALL users the ability to calculate HASH values from the Properties panel (i.e. right mouse) of any file viewable in Windows explorer shell GUI. If you'd like to compare for real, here are the HASH values for the last ISO build you posted as available at: http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/box/3.5.6/LO-3.5.6_English-NA-DVD_all-platforms_multi-lang_plus-extras_v2.iso.mirrorlist LO-3.5.6_English-NA-DVD_all-platforms_multi-lang_plus-extras_v2.iso Powered by MirrorBrain Size: 3.8G (4044062720 bytes) Last modified: Wed, 22 Aug 2012 03:58:15 GMT (Unix time: 1345607895) SHA-256 Hash: 55d62394196ab920d99ec99480d515672d738a152c26c92177500cd3113c8fa7 SHA-1 Hash: 8560042169d28f30053f91aae5523fbac049234b MD5 Hash: 96560a0b6c117a07d32d33baa1e2ef30 BitTorrent Information Hash: 9ea3cc57031a78cb5af214a041637a5ff2f30648 Hope that is clear enough so that it helps you to understand that there is a bit more work you need to take on to assure the quality of your DVD box/ (i.e. as in Boxed set software distribution). Re: [libreoffice-users] Use of MD5 and other HASHvalues of LibO package downloads and alternate distribution DVD uploads
Tim, Very reasonable that you would not have, or want, direct write access to the pool holding the master copies for distribution out to the mirrors--that is syssamdin magic better handled by the folks running the mirror service. My suggestion is that you verify that the MirrorBrain HASH values for the .ISO file against what you created locally prior to you upload. That way you can be certain that what you prepared will make it intact out to the mirrors. Each user then must be responsible for verifying their own downloads, with some trust that what is being downloaded is your original. Using the HASH values facilitates that at all steps--but you set the foundation for it. You can wait for it to post up to the mirrors and grab the MirrorBrain HASH (as either the Info, or Details link--same content), or you can ask your contact to provide you the HASH value of what they received at the transfer server. Or if you're conservative, just do both. Practice a bit with the md5sum, md256sum and you'll soon make it habit for all your data transfers--even locally between your computers. [libreoffice-users] RE: [libreoffice-accessibility] where's the accessibility?
Tom, Probably, I'm pretty certain this issue has actually been with us since the Java JRE 1.6 - JRE 1.7 crossover. It impacts usability with AT because large segments of the GUI are no longer functional with screen and brail readers under JRE 1.7's Java Accessibility API even though the JAB is appears to be delivering identical roles and obejcts. For now, rolling back to a JRE 1.6 and its more functional JAAPI may be the best suggestion for LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice users in need of AT. The Java dependency may eventually be dropped, depending on where things go with BASE and HSQLDB and implementing a non-Java accessibility bridge based AT for Windows, i.e.an IAccessible2 implementation or possibly an AT-SPI2 port. Question beside the workaround of using a JRE 1.6, is if there is much developer and TDF Board desire to repair AT and possibly BASE for use with JRE 1.7 and a more current HSQLDB build. Hi :) Should the devs be made aware of problems with the newer release of Java (again)? Each new release of Java creates more problems and each is soon found to have more security issues so another new one needs to be released quickly. It's a 3rd party product that is difficult to track. Simon, There appears to be a change in the JRE 1.7 and JAB 2.0.3 that is reducing the fidelity of the Java Accessibility API rendering of both LibreOffice and OpenOffice. This is affecting both NVDA and Jaws screen readers. I've been unable to find any Oracle documentation on API changes from the 2.02 to 2.03 JAB or JAAPI, but something is definitely changed. Reviewing the JAB delivered document structure with JavaMonkey shows the 2.02 rendering to be identical with the 2.0.3 rendering--but with JRE 1.7 its JAAPI appears to process the result differently and does not fully render the results in either screen reader. Are you able to roll back to JRE 1.6 and a JAB 2.0.2 installation and retest the issues you've had with LibreOffice 3.6.4? And otherwise asses AT usability with the earlier Java runtimes? Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Re: [libreoffice-users] LO 4.0.0.3 has no printer in Win7 - SHOW STOPPER
No I was replying to Tom's note. Your fdo#60177 bug is initial and only report of the problem. Sorry for confusion, also you'll have a number of emails coming from the Bugzilla mechanisim those are the ones to focus on while the bug is confirmed and addressed, or disproved. [libreoffice-users] Re: LO 4.0.0.3 has no printer in Win7 - SHOW STOPPER
Bug fdo#60177 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60177 resolved as invalid after successful installation and printer function. Anyone experiencing similar printer configuration issue on LibreOffice for Windows upgrade to 4.0.0.3 RC3, i.e. Print dialogs show no printers, please capture installation log and user profile and reopen this bug to post them.
