[videoblogging] My Friend's First Videoblog

2005-10-26 Thread Its A Mystery and So Im I

Hi, Vloggers

I would like to share my friend's first attempt at videoblogging.
The videos up are hilarious.

Go to Bill Dyszel's Instant filmmaking blog and give him some
encouragement. I think videoblogging is the perfect medium for
his personality and talent.

The Wonder of Instant Moviemaking

Once it took months or years to create a movie. Now you can dash off
a flick in a couple days, or even a few hours. Today, thousands of
crazed filmmakers compete in fast-forward moviemaking events such as
the 48-Hour Film Project, CinemaSports, Quickflicks New York, or
Group 101. I've been involved with all of these and a few others,
too, and I think it's an amazing experience for filmmakers and
audiences alike. This blog is dedicated to all those filmmakers for
whom instant gratification isn't quite fast enough.

I'm sure this wouldnt matter to those that champion the use of links within videos ...

but would that break ipod compatability of the video?  (they
obviously wouldnt be able to follow the links, but I mean would the
video no longer even play on an iPod if I were to experiment with this
in-video linking?)On 10/27/05, Andreas Haugstrup Pedersen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

[videoblogging] Open Call to Video Bloggers & VJs : Get Jiggy

2005-10-26 Thread jean_poole

here's a piece I wrote for a street press mag recently, trying to encourage some more cross-over and/or dialogue between the quite vibrant VJ & videoblogging scenes... am sending to both the eyecandy & videoblogging lists too, as well as posting at a few forum sites, and [EMAIL PROTECTED]www.skynoise.net so we'll see if it generates some more cross-fertilising? jpOpen Call to Video Bloggers & VJs : Get JiggyDespite all the creative aspirations and technical skills they share, there's surprisingly little overlap between the huge populations of VJs & video bloggers. Nurturing mutual status as pixel underdogs, both VJs & video bloggers are adept at dealing with low or non-existent budgets, and both champion storytelling and/or aesthetics and visual ideas over production values. That's not to say production values are ignored - in fact, production values probably tie up more than their fair share of discussion time in either community, but a key defining aspect of being a VJ or videoblogger is the joy of just of being able to get those pixels out there. While all this pre-supposes you have compelling video / stories / pixels to begin with, at least the current state of video play helps level the media playing field to some degree. And the current expansion of mobile video ( phones, PSP, video iPods & many other handhelds ), continues this window of opportunity for bedroom pixelists. And to think of a hybrid army of these pixelists, loaded up with the combined skillsets of the VJ & VideoBlogging massive, is to imagine a continually more diverse and decentralised media. So let's bring it on.What can Video Bloggers learn from VJs?VJs know how to move pixels in real-time. Whether responding to music, or creating live audiovisual pieces, VJs are at home using real-time editing tools, allowing easy compositing, layering, sequencing and effects on the fly. Aside from live performance though, the 'instrumentness' of these real-time tools means they are also very effective and flexible video production tools. Creativity can be given a new leash when freed from the constraints of the rendering timeline, and levels of complexity can be explored spontaneously that would take a long time to build up to with traditional video editing software. And VJ software is especially suited to online video publishers, because both VJs & VideoBloggers tend to use 320 x 240 sized clips ( the bloggers because it's a default multimedia size compromise for bandwidth concerns, the VJs because it's a compromise between resolution and allowing the speediest real-time triggering and manipulation).VJs also have extensive knowledge about how to get projections happening, whether on a screen in a club, theatre, projecting from a rooftop, mobile van, shopping trolley, or even the side of a train. This is a very useful amount of technical knowledge to tap into, but should also encourage online publishers to think more about where their work can be shown offline - where can video be seen? Be shown? Where can stories be told? Where can your colours be projected?VJs also know a lot about codecs, and the ways video is compressed to create the best combination of image quality and speed of playback and 'scrubbing' ( moving a file backwards and forwards on a timeline smoothly ). And a thing or two about transitions, visual storytelling, the power of the image, the use by date of the image, effects ( and their ever shrinking use by dates), automated processes ( such as visual manipulation by audio analysis ), video signal routing, capturing, sampling and much much more. Key VJ community resources & forums : www.vjforums.com, www.audiovisualizers.com & www.vjcentral.comhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/eyecandy  ( mailing list with thousands of VJs )http://music.columbia.edu/mailman/listinfo/0xff ( another good mailing list )What can VJs learn from Video Bloggers?Videobloggers ( also known as vloggers) know the online networks inside out, and know the values and pleasures of automated publishing - getting your work out there in appropriate formats, having it automatically archived and linked to from a main page, having it easily cross referenced or quoted and having interested audiences automatically notified when it is published. All of which help make any particularly worthy video rise on it's merits rather than marketing budget ( netheads love calling this a 'meritocracy' ). VideoBloggers also know a lot about compression codecs ( though more focussed on image quality and shrinking file size than clip triggering speed), about getting work out to as many different platforms as possible, about storytelling, about audiences, about online promotion, about embedding hyperlinks and much much more.Of course, many VJs are already posting videos online, but few are harnessing the benefits and play available with networked publishing. VJ Falk ( Berlin ) (www.prototypen.com/blog/falk ) continues to clock sporadic VJ created pieces, vjtorrents.com provides 'BitTorrent

No, damnit. You didn't pay attention. I said this is NOT a case of

[videoblogging] Re: MP4 H.264

2005-10-26 Thread ecomputerd
Other people seem to believe that the H.264 quality is good, but my
guess is they are comparing the quality per filesize or bitrate. It
seems the quality per decoding or MHz "performance" is either equal
or below other encoders: just my guess based on my experience
playing back on a Pocket PC. The "some_postman" video that came
around was supposed to be 25fps and 800kbit/s, played back with
about 70% dropped frames at 7.778 fps.

Your post of 14.985 fps and 800 kbit/s worked with 136/3169 dropped
frames. Fairly low dropout (playback fps of 14.342). I'm showing
Audio: MPEG4 AAC Audio, AAC0 (Codec LibFAAD LC, HE,Ps AAC, 32kHz
Mono) and Video: AVC aka H.264, AVC1 (FFmpeg AVC).

Plays back pretty good on a 500+MHz VGA Pocket PC.

I was hoping H.264 would also be a clear winner as well. You can get
better playback performance with something like DivX, I think. I
haven't done extensive testing, but the H.264 videos that people
seem to be making are all (so far that I've tested) taxing to the
playback system.

Incidently I love that song AND video. Sounds like a 1950's-era
scat. The only thing that seems to give it away is the rushing snare
roll, which I don't think I've ever heard in "earlier" music before
(not that I listen to much of it, though). I could be all wrong on
that, but either way: sounds great! And that framerate plays back
decently on my Pocket PC.

Re: [videoblogging] no enclosures

2005-10-26 Thread David Meade
Josh ... I figured it out ... your MIME mention got me thinking and I
checked something...

It's the MP3 you have as an enclosure in your latest post. the
Blip.TV server is returning it's content type as

text/html;

instead of:

audio/mpeg

When feed burner goes to check the content type isn't not matching
what it should be. The good news is this is an easy fix ... The
blip.tv servers were doing the same thing for WMVs not too long ago
and they fixed it for me inside of a day.

I'd email Mike and ask him about it and in the meantime maybe remove
reference to the MP3.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: why people videoblog

2005-10-26 Thread robert a/k/a r
I would love to see this group get away from A-list and move forth. Let
videoblogging flourish without A-listers blogrolling A-listers, without
clique-y behaviour, opening the doors to all producers, developers and
collaborators.

I have never met JG but love his spirit. The petrie dish concept is a
wonderful thing, make open media, live open media.

I like his statement "Behind every Vlog there are individuals,
people...". YES!

I don't know Rachel, Mark, Abe, Chris, Ryan, David, Robert, Christian,
Johnny, and Johnjacob tho I think I'd like to meet them all. JG, please
help get their work online for us, help us video bloggers discover
these new people and their ideas.

Let's make a special effort to make this happen, let's make the
community more open, let's let in anyone who wants to develop tools,
create content, communicate ideas.

Let's not discriminate, let's not be small, let's welcome everyone to
attend all functions, with no excuses.

Let's make this happen big, let's make an extraordinary effort to not
exclude and for us all to be open. Let the people be visible, let the
B, C, D and E list be visible, let everyone be equal. And let everyone
be a collaborator. Be collaborative, not exclusionary.

Make love not war. Kudos to Verdi and everyone who helps noobs, and
everyone encourages peeps everywhere have a conversation with all of
us. Check out Charles Hope's link to Blip-hosted entry

[videoblogging] MP4 H.264

2005-10-26 Thread andrew michael baron
I'm in limbo on the H264/MP4 files (Steve).

I recieved a copy of a the new Vegas app last month which is
recomended for making PSP files, but its Windows only. Also, there is
some controversoty over using the new Mp4 H264 file format on PSP
right now because its not backwards compatible and the new PSP
firmware 2.0 does not support all of the 3rd party apps that were
built up during the run of 1.

So a lot of people are telling me that they cant play the new H264
version because they will not upgrade the firmware.

Also, I was hoping that there would be a solution with h264 MP4 that
would work cross platform, but the files that I was creating were
aparently not working on PSP or any Windows players.

Here is the last file I made:
http://rocketboom.com/video/rb_05_oct_21.mp4

It's H264 and I wish this file would work in Quicktime, Ipod, PSP and
on Windows.

What he's said about that in the past is that most of us are
practicing a "lower" form of videoblogging. At least that's the way
I understand what he's said. I do believe he makes some valid and
important points but I also think he puts too much emphasis on what
he terms "bloggy video." As we've been collectively defining
videoblogging by practicing it for a while now it seems to me that
the highly granular, hyper-texty video that Andreas holds in high
regard is only a small part of videoblogging - and it's not the main
part.

Maybe if more people practiced that kind of videoblogging it would be
widely seen as defining it. Thus my whole thing about "quit typing
about what you think a videoblog is and go make a videoblog about
what you think a videoblog is." Give us examples. Lots of
examples. Compelling examples.

Pretty soon we'll have lots of examples of television as "video
podcasts."

I have downloaded the free trial of Premier Elements
and think it is definatly something to concider for
once I finish fixing the roof (don't worry there will
be a video).

BUT

Using another sugestion I have used Quicktime Pro to
Export an AVI to Mpeg4 format. Hopefully it turns out
to be iPod friendly!

I have uploaded it to OurMedia like I do all of my
videos, but this one doesn't stream? I know that I'm
overlooking something simple. When exporting I used
MP4 Video AAC Audio and I clicked the "Enable
Streaming" button and left the defaults on the screen
of Maximum Packet Size = 1450 and Maximum Packet
Duration = 100

I'm not sure what else I'm supposed to do to get it to
stream?

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Public Eye - West Coast RocketBoom Clone

2005-10-26 Thread andrew michael baron
It sounds like according to your definition of a videoblog then, the
example you sited of Steve Garfield's would not really allow for
defining his website as a videoblog, or even as having a videoblog
component, but rather, he created one video that you host on your
site which you call a single videoblog? In otherwods, Steve has not
produced anything that could be defined as a videoblog, since this
piece with the hyperlinks?

And the reference to Human Dog - wouldn't it also then be correctly
inferred from your definition that thehuman dog has a bit of content
that passes for videoblogs but that most of what Chris posts that he
calls a videoblog, is not?

And also, it seems as though, for the most part then, 99.9% of the
people on the yahoo videoblog list that say they have videoblogs do
not, according to your definition.

Am I making the right inferences?

There's a woman local to silicon valley who edits her vacation videos

I understand the trail left behind in the various forms so if Privacy is

I think it's Astonishing that Jay and Ryanne have met through these

The only gatekeeper is myselves.

note1
Livejournal isn"t crap, like anything else everywhere else It's what the

I tell everyone I meet about my vlog, myspace, medfilms, livejournal ,and

note 2
I don"t subscribe to all Vlogs nor want to.
I do explore.
I do take time to comment.
I don"t necessarily like alot of vlogs but it dosn"t mean they should change

2005-10-26 Thread Gena
Ah yes, trolls. It is the bad part of interactive. It stings but brush
yourself off and start all over again. You are not doing this for the
trolls and bottom feeders.

You have something important to say and for me to watch. I don't have
kids, carpool or the demands on your time. But viewing your video I
can get a sense of what your life is like. It gives me a context to
understanding the people in this country.

Some people seem to come from the "Jerry Springer" school of social
discourse. But, as this person is discovering, that might not work
when the conversation is visible to all and you can be tracked back to
your lair. He may learned something today about responsibility. If not
him someone else who stopped by to check out your video.

Good will come of out of this moment in time. Oh, wait - it has
passed. Cool.

[videoblogging] VideoEgg, TypePad Team on Video Blogging

2005-10-26 Thread Steve Garfield
Elizabeth Millard's Publish.com article just came out, VideoEgg,
TypePad Team on Video Blogging:

I just had to laugh at this part:

"VideoEgg and TypePad expect that many more bloggers will now
incorporate video into their blogs, in much the same way that they
include photos.

Although Sladek anticipates that this will drive more video onto the
Web, he does not expect that there will suddenly be a surge of
video-based journalism, or film school alternatives.

"We're going to see lots of grandchildren and puppies," he laughed.
"But that's great, because that's what blogs are all about." "

She has some quotes from me in there and the other stuff I mentioned
that didn't make it into the article is over here:

As for pointing out of the blog there are time-based hyperlinks. Such as
"Steve Garfield With Added Links" http://solitude.dk/archives/20041123-2323/ > - I have more of that type
spread over my own blog. Adrian Miles have more complex ways of
referencing outside sources and providing links within video. I think my
next personal example will be a picture-in-picture quote where the little
picture will be a link to whatever I'm quoting.

Regarding the 'one thought' concept my current baby of the series about
The Haberek at Human-Dog http://www.human-dog.com/lab/?cat=7 >. This
story could have been told as one big video, but instead it was told as
seven seperate entries. Each able to stand alone. Now I can reference that
one subset I want to talk about. Lately I've also enjoyed "Lorem Ipsum"
from Dave H http://davemedia.blogspot.com/ > for the same reasons. I
use these as examples because it's easy to see how these could have been
built as traditional video, not because the concept of 'one thought' only
applies to series.

[videoblogging] Washington Post videos available on iTunes

2005-10-26 Thread ecomputerd
Although this is great, I can't seem to locate an actual RSS feed
with video. But maybe I need to spend more than 5 minutes searching.

lesposen submitted this to the podcast group. Probably useful
information for this group, too.

"Washingtonpost.com may be the first site without a strong TV tie-in
to make video available via iTunes. Unlike Disney, this is no fancy
deal with Steve Jobs. Deputy multimedia editor Chet Rhodes told
MediaPost no effort was made to even contact. The video podcasts are
free to download and, for now, free of ads; Rhodes estimates that
video would have to be downloaded at least 10,000 times before
attracting advertisers.
So far, the site has posted six video podcasts (including a review of
the new video iPod) ranging in length from news clips of about two
minutes to short-form documentaries running nearly 10 minutes; they
can be viewed or downloaded individually through iTunes or subscribed
to as a video RSS feed.
Finding a way to make money from audio and video podcasts may be the
ultimate goal, but some media companies view increased exposure as
payment enough in the short term. In the long term, making money via
advertising will take much better metrics and tracking than iTunes
currently provides."

"weird" is such a great, but meaningless, word.
for example...your videoblog: http://vlog.kitykity.com
here i am...allowed to see your intimate family moments.
its like im walking into your house and opening up your photo albums.
how great is that.

it really isnt "weird" though.
Its just a change in how we interact.
Richard BF said it best when he said that "privacy is dead".
http://www.kashum.com/blog/1128569900
(who is probably one of the best videoblog critics around)

so its just amazing to actually be able to see the social changes happening.
right now, i dont have relationships with people in other countries
UNLESS i have met them in person somehow.
there are few places for me to talk to people from other countries
about our lives or things happening in the world.
Many reasons for this: language barriers, we dont talk to people
unless they are like us, some cultures might not have the urge to open
up.
But with VideobloggingI really see a foundation being built.
In 10 years, when a large group of people(thousands?) start recording
their lives online...youll be able to surf around and share their
consciousness. Without sounding like a smelly, fucking hippieI
think this is pretty cool.
Seeing how someone lives creates empathy.

Tis reminds me of a great Daily Show observation:
Manhattan voted 87% against Bush.
we were also the center of the only US terrorist attack while also
having the gayest population on the planet.
the election was decided becasue of fear of terrorsim and
disaggreement with gay marriage.
when you dont know people, you can really hate them.

2005-10-26 Thread Lynn Lane

Matt,Thanks for checking out my vlog and especially thanks for the add to your FireANT! I like producing these in a raw format as it seems to fit the subject matter. Much of what I do in my long format documentaries is more controlled so this is a great departure. I'll be bringing some more street interviews soon as well as a series of perspectives form people of all walks of life on varying subjects. I'll revisit this current topic from time to time because I am working on another feature length project that will keep me in touch with the Hip Hop and South Bronx environment only it isn't involved in the music industry at all.

Jay

[videoblogging] Re: Days after ViPod

2005-10-26 Thread wazman_au
I'm with you, Susan. In fact, I hereby declare that I was calling
them video podcasts _before_ Apple started promoting them as such.
When we first listed on iTunes a few months ago I made sure to use
the term in the description that goes out with our iTunes feed. Not
that I want a medal or anything.

In new media lingo today, "video podcast" demands little further
explanation, but what the hell is a vlog to most people? The term
just hasn't become mainstream, so let's move on.

I know to some people the whole vlog thing is a citizens' media
revolution, and they demand some sort of distinct term on that
basis, but to others it's a vehicle to get out content that they
enjoy producing and/or believe may be enjoyable or informative to
others. They'll describe it using the term that their target
audience is most likely to understand.

[videoblogging] Re: top feedburner vlogs

2005-10-26 Thread LeanBackVids.com
I agree... We can already communicate our messages via phone and email
quite well and adding video to those is an logical next step. It will
indeed be a milestone for basic communication, but my original rant
was more about the number of readers (aka "popularity").

Most people have no interest in reading random emails or listening to
random phone messages. Why is it any different if video is added?
Every person does something every day. There are just too many people
to watch.

All I'm saying is that the subject X is usually more mass appealing
that person Y. (Unless of course you're a sexy female who will
naturally appeal to the masses of horny males online... but doesn't
that come down the subject of sex more than the person?)

Pick a topic that you're passionate about (other than vlogging) and
imagine a vlog centered around that. Wouldn't you subscribe and want
to see each new post?

For example, I grew up skateboarding and have always loved to watch
it. As of right now, I know of only one person who is doing a vlog
with skating in it, let alone centered around the topic.

http://www.64mm.com/vlog/

I anxiously await his new posts, yet I know very little about the
creator. I realize that there is a talented individual behind this
project, and I've exchanged emails with him, but the point is that I
would still be a loyal subscriber even if I had not. It is the
subject that I'm interested in, not the producer.

People generally meet and interact based on a common interest. We
have here in this group... the common interest has been the subject of
video blogging. The reason personal vlogs have been popular is
because we are a tight knit group. Those who started earlier and
helped others start have more viewers than those who are just
launching. Let's face it, right now most vlog watchers are fellow
vloggers.

I guess all I'm trying to say is that this community won't be niche
for long, and I welcome it. I want to see more videos about
skateboarding, snowboarding, taking care of a northwest lawn (aka
fighting moss), etc.

-Matt

What did I do to deserve that kind of phrasing? You were all up in arms
about naming rocketboom 'new media'. I'm just trying to point out that as
far as new media go rocketboom is pretty conservative new media in the
sense that the video content is not made up of new media. The 'new' coming
from the content around the video on the entry's location.

If we see 'videoblog' as the fusion of blog and video, you obviously have
to have something from both. But it varies how much any given blogger
takes from both. It's not a question of 'either/or', but a question 'to
which degree...'.

Hello fellow vloggers.

I posted this earlier but didn't get one response. I've only had my
vlog up for short time but am now up to full speed
of putting at least one video up day. I would love to get some
feedback from some of you letting me know what you think about it, if
it's interesting at all etc. I have one focus for the most part
throughout this current series of videos but it is going to depart
soon into various other subjects and styles. I've just been playing
around with some footage and putting some videos up.

To those who say the difference here is that no one can tell us what to say:  That's not true.  There are plenty of laws on libel, slander, pornography, national defence, and copyright that limit what you can say on your vlog.  Most ISP have limits in their terms of service on things like "hate speech".  You can't do anything you want.Ok, maybe 'no one can tell us what to say' is a little too literal. It's more like 'I don't have to base what I can say off of what will piss off the advertisers, my boss, or get my license revoked' Most television aims to please the advertisers and audience. Today most videoblogs do not have these concerns. If you think videoblogs are the same as television, why bother watching them? [videoblogging] Re: top feedburner vlogs.. steve garfield gets bumped by the boob

2005-10-26 Thread LeanBackVids.com
Well I can't stress enough that 400 readers is not that many.

There are more than 400 people out there who want sex news. In
addition, there is probably that many people interested in any given
topic, however, there may not be that many people who want to watch a
video about a single individual's life.

That being said, Rocketboom, Systm and Command-N are all listed on
VlogMap. None of them are sharing their FeedBurner stats and Systm is
using a non-FB feed. If any of these three decide to publized their
FB numbers, it would jack up the stats. A good example is
Diggnation.com, which is not listed on VlogMap, has 35,356 readers.

Themes are be more popular than people. This will most likely remain
constant. I hate to use the TV comparison, but look at the ratio
between subject-based and personality-based content. This is due to
human interest, not the format.

As you can tell, this is something I get fired up about. It is my
opinion that theme-based vlogs will thrive while personal vlogs will
generally be reserved for friends/family.

Summary: "intent matters"

I completely agree, and I think it's why you see things like
open-source, weblogs, podcasting and videoblogs becoming more important.
These are all bottom-up things, they were not started by companies or
product managers, they are ideas and movements that were/are defined by
their intent. Sure, corporations and businesses will utilize them, but
they couldn't have created them.

[videoblogging] Re: Public Eye - West Coast RocketBoom Clone

2005-10-26 Thread Amanda Congdon
I think Andrew was comparing Rocketboom to Boing Boing not visually,
but content-wise. RB is essentially a link blog… or a link videoblog
rather. On the days we are doing news (which is the majority of the
time) we are just pointing out stories and linking to them. We dig up
what we find to be interesting around the web (and we believe we have
similar taste to sites such as Boing Boing, hence the example) and
send our viewers to those sites.

Additionally, unlike TV where the host is completely unavailable to
his or her audience, I am there listening and emailing with viewers. I
also say literally whatever I want without any kind of sensor, because
I don't have to answer to conservative advertisers. As for "hate
speech"… umm… I wouldn't be doing that anyway, so yeah, maybe I can't
do ANYTHING, but I can do anything I'd want to do.

What I've come to understand from this first year of RB is that a
video blog "show" audience wants to get to know the host, and a lot of
RB watchers tell me they feel a connection to me, because I share more
of myself than a TV host. Sure, it's not a personal videoblog, but
it's still a lot more personal than television. I think it's one of
the things that separate us from TV. Another thing is that RB doesn't
dumb down information. Unlike most of TV, we assume our audience is
smart, not stupid. We don't work to make sure EVERYONE "gets it"…we
don't play to the lowest common denominator. Of course, not all of TV
plays dumb, but lots of it does.

We also incorporate our audience a lot more than TV. Our audience
sends in videos and stories, and many, many of them we use (and place
a "thank you" link to give credit). If ever we mess up a fact, you can
be sure we'll be notified within minutes after the episode is posted
by an attentive viewer. Sure, people write in to the TV shows they
watch, but do they ever get a response? Usually not.

We make changes! We take the blame when we screw up! We listen!

RB is truly a collaborative effort with our audience. They really work
with us to steer the show. Many folks didn't like Tom Delay's mugshot
on Monday… so you know what? We showed some alternative versions on
Tuesday… that kind of thing. Like I said before, we really, really
listen… something I think TV fails to do miserably.

I am not trying to say we don't have anything in common with TV,
that'd be an idiotic claim. What I am saying is that RB is not just
IPTV, even without the links and comments. All new media borrows from
the old, but RB definitely is new media.

As for The Public Eye, your right Tomas, let's give `em a break 
I'm excited to see more "shows" popping up.

Ok, ok, give me a few days. I'll write it up for you in a way that
wont be offensive or defensive (I admit to being overly offensive and
defensive at the same time).

Most of these kinds of criticisms stem from little to no research in
the history of the weblog. Rocketboom is a quenisential videoblog. So
are personal videoblogs.

All of this is a very different format than TV. Stand by, I'll spell
it out for you from at least one perspective and you will be able to
see how we fit together instead of trying to tare us apart or say
that it's something different.

Most important to me in particular, in everything that is going on,
is intent. That's why I would say Mobuzz, as a Rocketboom copycat, is
shit because their intent is like a commercial factory in the
elements they choose to emulate with. As long as Public Eye's intent
is sincere, I hope they flourish and I am flattered that they are
trying to emulate our setup. BTW, almost every blog on blogger or
type-pad is just a clone of each other in this way as well, if thats
how you stand to look at it.

What you are seeing that has changed though is that we are doing what
we want to do and our intent is very much like the intent of any
weblogger who presents commentary on the the world. Plenty of ideas
adopted from the old with plenty of ideas for the new.

As for any counter behind the claim that we are able to do whatever
we want, of course we can not do illegal activity. That's not
relevant to what we can do that you can't do on TV. Relatively
speaking, if its legal in the world, we can do that. TV has its own
more narrow set of rules and requirements.

Thanks for the input! I really appreciate it. I think that one of the
reasons I'm having trouble to make videos right now is that I've been

[videoblogging] Re: Creative crisis (I'm stuck)

2005-10-26 Thread jonny goldstein
Here's one way to go if you are stuck on what to do a vlog post, or series of
posts, about:

People always enjoy a little drama. Drama happens when there is some sort of
challenge
that needs to be overcome. That creates suspense (how will this turn out) and
empathy
(everyone can relate to someone who is facing a challenge). This can be done
with the
most mundane topics. So, for example, I'm doing videos now on implementing a
new filing
system. The thing is, people can relate to the challenge of dealing with masses
of paper
piling up all over the place. It's also cool, 'cause people can learn something
from your
efforts. And there are lots of opportunities for humor (one look at my

Anyway, there's got to be other good approaches, but this one works for me.

6.0 just came out with the release of the video-capable iPods, no?

Yes, to get QT7 you would have had to grab iTunes, as well (AFAIK) but
still, 4.9 was the first Podcast release, and (someone correct me if I'm
wrong) that supported .pcast on Win and pcast:// on MacOS. So this
definately wouldn't solve your problem. I also couldn't trace the issue
to a browser-dependant problem (i.e. doesn't work on either IE or FF)

[videoblogging] Re: Public Eye - West Coast RocketBoom Clone

2005-10-26 Thread Irish Hermit
A few thoughts about this thread:

1. Public eye just started. Give 'em a break before you start
calling
them a clone of anyone. There's too much of a "hipper than thou"
attitude here.

2. Vlogs are nothing more than homemade television on the internet.
Get over it folks. I've been around too long to think of it as
nothing more than another installment in a long line of the "next
great thing" that will change how we all communicate. Email and
webpages with hypertext were monumental changes. Blogs and vlogs
are
just adding an already existing technology to webpages. Laptops
will
replace the cumbersome television console in the middle of the
living
room. Ipods and other small players will become the Dick Tracy
writstwatch tv's we've been waiting for. But at the end of the day
it's still television.

3. To those who say the difference here is that no one can tell us
what to say: That's not true. There are plenty of laws on libel,
slander, pornography, national defence, and copyright that limit
what
you can say on your vlog. Most ISP have limits in their terms of
service on things like "hate speech". You can't do anything you
want.

All the best,
Tomás

This, I think, is the correct call. We've got the .pcast method down pat
< http://www.vsocial.com/rss/pcaster.php >, but I couldn't get it to
"just work" on my machine (iTunes 6.0). I've been upgrading since 4.0,
pre-podcasts, and .pcast is not associated on my machine.

Tried it on another machine with a fresh install of 6.0 -- worked like a
charm. Maybe we should hit apple up for making this work in the next
release? Unfortunately this really limits alot of folks, because there
was a large install base pre-podcasts.

This does make for some annoying "hey, if this doesn't work, try this
over here" stuff, which confuses lots of folks and is definately not the
best way to address the issue, but I for one can't see a better way of
doing it.

Unfortunately I think most people don't read directions (myself
included). I wonder if there's something we're not doing right
here? Apple's instructions are pretty clear that you can use the
pcast protocol or a .pcast file. It sounds to me like these iTunes
installations have, for one reason or another, not properly
registered the protocol handler.

I wonder if maybe the difference is between fresh installations of
iTunes versus upgrades. Maybe an upgrade to the version with
podcasting support didn't properly register the handler, while a
fresh installation would?

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Public Eye - West Coast RocketBoom Clone

2005-10-26 Thread duncan speakman

Lets take a look again at your original blab, which I would call very patronizing:
"a
rocketboom clone? ..erm... you know.. call me crazy but i'm sure i've
seen casual presenters sitting there telling us about stuff with a cue
sheet in their hand before somewhere, hmm.. i think it might have been
called television. rocketboom have
a style all of their own, but they certainly didn't create that visual
presentation format... any 'trendy' shows on Channel 4 (uk), MTV et al
from the late 80s and early nineties... "
ok andrew, this is getting silly, now you're getting into digging and
rewinding? my original statement was a comment about the whole 'this is
a rocketboom clone' idea which keeps floating around.. it was targeted
at no one in particular, referenced no-ones knowledge level and most
importantly contained both a compliment and a statement which clarified
what i was talking about , i.e. 'visual presentation format'.  I
really don't understand why you are being so defensive about this?
surely 'you' are aware that rocketboom is influenced by televisual
presentation styles, that is one of the reasons for it's success,
people get the irony and humour because of its references to other
media.

If you don't see anything, it just seems like you may be missing some of the tools needed to be able to see.

ok i have to admit i don't understand this statement. sorry

be well

Yes, I've tried that too, but unfortunately it doesnt work for me either.  At home (winXP/firefox) it says something like "pcast is not a registered protocol" (or something) and here at work (winXP/ie) it is just a broken page.

Here's the itunes link I have on my page:
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?
id=82308530
(course the id number is my itunes podcast feed id)
The link is on the right hand side of my vlog page:
http://vlogs.kitykity.com

I do one click on it, and it opens iTunes and shows my "video podcast
feed."
I can then just click "subscribe" to subscribe to it. So for me, two
clicks. And I'm using Windows with Internet Explorer.

i know a fair amount about new media.
 I
would start by having a look at the blog format and asking yourself how
blogging is different from writing for a newspaper.  Would you say
the Boing Boing is just doing the same thing as the New York Times?
diid you actually read my previous post? i said (and now say for the
final time) i was referring to VISUAL STYLE AND CONTENT ONLY, not
delivery medium, not external context, not distribution..etc etc
etc,
Referencing BoingBoing is a poorly thought example when we're talking
about visual style and content. BB has text and image on its page, but
that text contains (visible) hypertext links, there are images in full
colour and some animated adverts, none of which is seen in the New York
Times, what is in the visual content of Rocketboom videos that isn't on
television?
 Or,
if you are like most personal videobloggers, ask yourself 'how is a
blogging different than a writing a personal diary?"Once
you mull that over for awhile, you may be more prepared to start
considering how video on a blog is different than video on a TV. That's
just one angle, but it may be a good starting point.
leave it out andrew, if you want a sensible and educated debate i'm all
up for it, but please make sure you actually read and understand the
points i made before coming back with the usual 'how video on a blog is
different', that hasn't ever been my point.
 It
may be important to take into consideration not only how they are
different, but how each platform informs the content as well.

[videoblogging] Re: Public Eye - West Coast RocketBoom Clone

2005-10-26 Thread Steve Watkins
There must be some valid reasons that rocketboom is more likely to be
compared to TV than other videoblogs are. Certainly to me it appears
to have borrowed more from traditional TV shows than many other
videoblogs. I bet that for every difference between rocketboom &
traditional TV that you can come up with, I can come up with a similarity.

If such comparisons offend you then tough, you should have used a more
original format in the first place, rather than defending yourself by
making proclamations about how little others understand new media.

It certainly felt lik an old media experience when the promised h264
PSP feed not only failed to materialise as scheduled, but the PSP
version dissapeared completely without obvious explanation.

[videoblogging] Re: 1000s of new vloggers coming - it is the time to talk about content

2005-10-26 Thread petertheman
I wrote this (in the excitement of having just tried the typepad
thing) before reading the latest posts, and yey, we're already talking
content.

Here are some of the most important things in my mind (they are very
basic):

- you have something to say. Try the videoblogweek for yourself and at
first, you'll feel like "what can I have possibly to say". Then you
realize everything is interesting.

- it's about connecting people and speaking truth. Vlog what you
really believe. It's a great exercise in not becoming the fake person,
the corporate drone you always feared of becoming. I think people
become that way because they just lack the practice of saying what
they really think.

- small cameras (the elph for example) work fine. It's not about the
gloss.

- as you becom better, you can do most editing while filming.

- make sure to always put your url at the end of a video. You don't
know where it might end up.

Eh, I think I might post these on my blog :)

[videoblogging] 1000s of new vloggers coming - it is the time to talk about content

2005-10-26 Thread petertheman
I was just trying out Typepad's new integrated video posting.
(http://typepad.videoegg.com/faq.html) It makes posting videos really,
really easy. All you do is drag and drop a clip (straight from the
camera or saved on your computer) onto the field. Then you can cut it,
and then click upload, and you're done. Supereasy. I don't wanna talk
about the pros and cons of Flash and all that, but about the content.

This means that 10s of 1000s of people now have the easiest
videopublishing tool built into their blog software. Some of them at
least will try it out.

I think that what we've built here over the past year is a really rich
way of communicating with video. Forget the geeky stuff. But the
*kinds* of videos people here make are amazing. Personal. Real voices.
Truth. As opposed to the "funny" stuff you see on AOL video portal and
such.

So I think we need to educate. Each of us can be a teacher. And each
of us will have 1000s to teach. Go to typepad vlogs and leave comments
about the *content* of their videos. Tell them to be free, speak truth...

It's not just typepad by the way. Livejournal. Myspace. And others.
Video is finally happening. And I want people to realize the power of
this medium.. the stuff we talk about here..

But I do think we've created something unique here. And now's the time
to spread the word.

That's what I think, sorry for the evangelizing :)

[videoblogging] Re: why people videoblog

2005-10-26 Thread Bill Streeter
I completely agree Jay. I've really enjoyed the personal Vlogs I've
been watching. Historians will tell you that a lot of what they know
about the past--a lot of what they know about how people lived, is
because of things that were written by ordinary people. Yeah they
read all the official accounts and the press but they really rely on
personal accounts to fill in the blanks of a story. So in this way
personal video blogs will serve those purposes in the future. And I
don't even think that you'll have to wait 100 years for them to be
really interesting. In 20 years they'll be facinating. The most
popular thing I think that I've posted was a music video that was
made by some obscure band in STL in 1981. It probably wasn't
considered to be all that interesting at the time it was made. But
almost 25 years later it's interesting because of what it documented
about a subculture that very little is known about but was a
influence on things that came after it. A lot of personal video
blogs will be the same way, no doubt.

Hmmm...so much to learn so little time...
Rocketboom sucks way more than Public Eye.

I standby my claim: you have a lot to learn about new media.

I would start by having a look at the blog format and asking yourself how blogging is different from writing for a newspaper.  Would you say the Boing Boing is just doing the same thing as the New York Times?

Or, if you are like most personal videobloggers, ask yourself 'how is a blogging different than a writing a personal diary?"

Once you mull that over for awhile, you may be more prepared to start considering how video on a blog is different than video on a TV. That's just one angle, but it may be a good starting point.

It may be important to take into consideration not only how they are different, but how each platform informs the content as well.

Duncan:

i don;t think this is a valid difference in terms of content.. it is referencing the medium it exists in. There have been (too) many television shows that cut to clips of other tv shows, so an online show that references other online shows is only natural..
and andrew, yes you have possibilities.. but i was ONLY talking about the style of the show, not what it represents.. it was not a criticism, i was just pointing out that is unfair to say that other online news (i use that term VERY loosly ;) ) shows shouldn't be accussed of ripping off rocketboom just because they are irreverant and/or have a single female presenter. It's like saying Bill Hicks rips off Richard Pryor because they both stood alone on stage telling jokes.

[videoblogging] Vlog Feedback Request....please

2005-10-26 Thread Lynn Lane
Hello fellow vloggers.

I've only had my vlog up for short time but am now up to full speed
of putting at least one video up day. I would love to get some
feedback from some of you letting me know what you think about it, if
it's interesting at all etc. I have one focus for the most part
throughout this current series of videos but it is going to depart
soon into various other subjects and styles. I've just been playing
around with some footage and putting some videos up.

Thanks for those who can help with some feedback.
