Re: [Zappa-List] Feb 3 1977 Pavilion de Paris (long)
That's a good question and I suppose it is possible... But I bought the vinyl boot in a used record store in Japan in '79. DAT didn't come out on the market until '86 or so, right?. I sorta have my doubts that it's the same source- but who knows? It could be... Interesting. BTW, tho' I agree with all of the comments regarding this boot, my favorite part is the brief Beach Boys nod in the end of BHAFA. "Little poop shoot" indeed. Re: [Zappa-List] Wating for QuAUDIOPHILIAc
Order or shipping confirmation? I received an order confirmation and it too had a tracking number, which I have been using to check on the order at the zappadotcom. I don't know whether or not this numbers corresponds to any shipping company or method, tho' I highly doubt it does. It seems to be merely a tracking number for the order at Barfko. As I do not have any plastic, I sent them a personal check (which the phone attendant I spoke to said was just fine). AFA I know, the check has not been cashed. I know that there has always been the funds to cover it, since the order was placed... I have filled out their "super spiffy complaint form", but have received no response. (I did the same thing when I placed the order, as I had forgotten my password and they seemed to have forgotten it too. Re: [Zappa-List] FZ comic
It's kinda lame, really... Worth seeing of course, but not worth the $20 a - ahem - FZ newbie would pay to have "anything related to Frank" (if you catch my drift here). It's the 'basic' MOI history up to just before the 71 stage tumble. The artwork is good - but not killer... Had R. Crumb done a Zappa history, THAT would be worth something. But this comic is pretty pedestrian. Again, fun to check out. But not crucial to possess. My 2 cents. SOFA I think many of us have seen it; I've owned it for about 4 years now. Re: [Zappa-List] New to the list
Welcome to the List, Dave. No, there is no FAQ for the procedure and there probably should be. I will try to rectify that sometime soon. For now, the best thing to do would be either get emails direct from the List, or check the yahoo page frequently for "offers". Shannon has started a new 'perma'-vine starting for the "Magic Fingers' Variation Variations" 4 disk set. You can mail him directly to get your name on that list. Or you can respond to one of the folks who have recently "closed" a vine offer, and ask to be considered for the re-offer. The email of a member is always attached to their message; you should be able to click on it to create a private mail to them (or copy and paste their addy to a new mail as the case may be). Replies to Group messages go out to the entire List. Some have found this tough to get used to, but we are - after all - primarily a "discussion" group, trading vinesare merely an added benefit... Have fun and don't be afraid to ask for help. We're a pretty friendly lot. Regards, SOFA Hey all,I'm new here, and just starting my FZ collection. Re: [Zappa-List] Recomendation
Thereis no easy answer to your question, Kim; FZ has over 65 released titles, many of them multiple disk sets. There's a LOT of music to choose from for this recommendation... I could name a release or two, someone else could respond "no, try these", and name another couple. It's almost easier to tell you what to avoid, yet there would still be a response to the effect "no, you should GET that one". Your situation is quite similar to "Hey, I just discovered bread; any recommendation on which bread I should buy?" And I'm not being silly here; it's really that complex. Since you liked 'Cleveland', and possibly more, from "Does Humor...why not get that one? Or have your friend copy it for you and then really give it a critical listen. Then ask yourself, "why do I like this?" You have lots of options: the guitar work, the compositional style, the social commentary, the funny lyrics, the tightness of the band. Narrow down what you like the most and we may be a little more help to you... And if this all sounds like too much to do for a lousy FZ recording, go buy "One Size Fits All". This is one recording that almost every Zappa fan rates highly; it seems to please a lot of the reasons that we all for enjoying FZ. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. I received confirmation of the order on Oct. 27 (#19929). I called 818-Pumpkin to make sure that it was a) okay to pay by personal check, and b) to make sure that I could still receive the 'credit' I was promised from the pre-order of "FZ in OZ". The attendant I spoke with assured me it was okay, simply deduct the credit from my check - which I did.At the end of November, I had not received my order, nor could I get any info on it by checking the website (tracking #X2345). As it is extremely difficult - not to mention expensive - to get thru to a real person at the 818-Pumpkin, I tried the "Help Form" available at the website.I received no reply to my inquiry. I tried again two more times in the Month of December...I finally gave up, figuring that my check had gotten lost in the mail - even tho' it was sent priority mail with delivery confirmation (which told me that it had been delivered on the 2nd of November). Last week, I received a notice from my bank that my checking account was overdrawn. Upon investigating, I found out that the check written to Barfko Swill was cashed and cleared my bank on Feb. 4th. However, checking the website, I do not see that my order has been shipped...I have requested (and paid for) an image of my cancelled check; I expect it in a couple of days. The bank attendant told me the image had an account number (XXX) as the endorsement on the back.I've spent most of the day (and god knows how much money) trying to reach someone at 818-Pumpkin, to no avail. I have also submitted another Help Form (support #102322) regarding the situation, but considering the track record of Help Form that I've experienced, I don't hold out a lot of hope for an answer from those in charge of handling help requests.I know that you're not one to "steal" from the fans that support the ZFT, but I wonder about your employees... Can you help me? My faith in Barfko-Swill is at an all time low.I hope I have provided you enough information to check out the problem.Warmest Regards,Jack C. Oonk N

Re: [Zappa-List] Re: MITB Box Set for sale on Ebay in 4 -2 disc Sales
Your best bet, Luis, is to use the message archives, hunt down the old vines, and request a copy from a "last" recipient. Vines should not die, nor do they need to be "revined". The last person to receive a copy has a moral obligation to pass it along - even if the request comes well after their having posted a "VO" message. Well group? [Zappa-List] Update at theBIGnote.com
Hey Gang! This is sorta a 'blanket' (or poncho, if you prefer) announcement that www.thebignote.com has updated their site today - yes, I know, about effing time... Some new (?) FZ in the Musibrarium, as well as an OOP Fowler Bros release, and a demo (of sorts) by yours truly and my vocal group; fine art by Zappa-List member Mark Darling; CD covers by TBNer List member Chris Foreman; a great "essay" by List member Dawayne Bailey (remember his "My first time to see FZ" thread? We have fleshed it out just a bit); and other new and/or gently used tidbits... Please let me know if you encounter any problems. Bear in mind that normally with an update, the increase in traffic at the Musibrarium's server can cause interruptions in service. We try to stay on top of that as best we can - but shit happens. Anyway, enjoy the new stuff. Regards, SOFA For further Z-related fun, please visit http://www.thebignote.com or http://www.killuglyradio.com , thank you. Yahoo! I have an idea, of sorts... How about I post all 3 sets of art at theBIGnote's webpage? They would be stored there forever, easily accessible, and not take up any of our "room" at the yahoo page... Re: [Zappa-List] MITB artwork
First off, thank you Jim for stepping up. I'm more than a little disappointed that some of the original vinees at the end of the line didn't respond (ya see, the message archives give me a pretty good clue of who these folks are)... But that's life, yes? I am currently thinking about a different way to start vines here, one that doesn't require any "keeping track"... I'll post those thoughts when I've fully fleshed them out. Afa the artwork for this set is concerned... I will be 'tidying' up our storage space in the following week; it's been a while, and needs to be done. So please, don't anyone delete anything as of yet... A lot of Chris' stuff, as I mentioned, was featured in theBIGnote's update; I will clear that out. Marco, if you could please allow me the week, I will have some space for your work. I'm sure I am not the only member interested in seeing what you have done... Patience Kids! Welcome Todd! Don't let the appearance of reigning confusion fool you; we really have no idea what we're doing. Hope you enjoy your stay... Cool Zappa story, btw. Regards, SOFA - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com Sent: Sunday, April 03, 2005 7:00 PM Subject: [Zappa-List] Vines, etc... hi all,i'm a fairly new member of this. the only other lists i belong to are the Tom Waits and Randy Newman ones. being a "newbie" i'm not too sure how these vines work. although i'm a newbie to this list i'm a long time FZ fan, owning most of his lps, all the way from Were Only In It For The Money, Lumpy Gravy, etc... my cousin turned me on to FZ when i was probably 14 or so, way back in the early 70s, i think it was the live white album. it was the first time i ever heard someone say fuck on a record, i was immediately hooked. i actually met Frank during my senior year in high school (1975) while interning at the local progressive FM radio station here in cincinnati. Don't You Eat the Yellow Snow was actually being played on the radio. he was in town to do a concert at the UC (University of Cincinnati) Fieldhouse and he dropped by WEBN to do an interview with ginger sutton. i got to sit in for the live interview. the reason i got to be there was because i had the most complete collection of FZ albums, which they used for the info. he arrived in a limo, came upstairs for the interview and made ginger look like a total idiot, because ginger obviously didn't know much about FZ. it was hilarious. i actually got to talk to him after the interview, but became totally tongue tied, even though i had all kinds of stuff i wanted to ask him, however i was able to ask him where i could find a copy of Lumpy Gravy which was probably the only LP i couldn't find. he thought that was pretty cool and at the time i think that was probably the album he was most proud of.well that's about it for now. might check in once in a while but glad to have found this discussion list.todd (who still can't resist saying "there's a howard johnsons, wanna eat some clams? whenever i see a howard johnsons, or whenever i order clams) hepburn Yahoo! Re: [Zappa-List] SOFA's Vine-Ology
Thank you for the kind offer YM (Barry). Obviously, the method employedat the KUR Forms is a good one, or I wouldn't have tried to emulate it. I think though (no offense, of course) that I'd like to see this work out for the List in its present form, as we are a community unto our own; sorta keeping the system "in house" rather than expanding it to involve other web areas. I sure (hope?) you understand. Warm regards! SOFA PS Nice wiki you're building, btw: http://wiki.killuglyradio.com/index.php/Main_Page Another option would be to not have the progression of a vine posted via the list, instead having a messageboard where it can be followed up. (SNIP)I could set up a forum for this at thebignote.com, should the powers that be feel like this is a viable option.Just a thought...YM (aka Barry, Lurker Extraordinaire) For further Z-related fun, please visit http://www.thebignote.com or http://www.killuglyradio.com , thank you. Re: [Zappa-List] re: Vines - and how they work
is that a real poncho or is that a sears poncho? but seriously folks, from a somewhat technologically challenged guy how do these vines work and how do i get in on them?todd Hello Todd, usb (I think I want to talk with you directly soon), and any other "newbies" In a nutshell, here are how 'vines' "work": Someone (maybe even you) has a recording that they would like to share with the List community. They make a post to the list indicating such; in the subject line they put "VO" (vine offer) and what they have to share (ex. 750427 Boston early show, or Barcelona '88 DVD). Then, In the body of the message they put their user name, real name, or email address, followed by a space and two arrows (). That's it... Someone (maybe even you) sees that message - either from a group email, digest, or at the yahoo page - and desires that selectionfor their collection; they respond to the message (changing nothing in the subject line) by adding their name to the message (ex =firstguy-US [EMAIL PROTECTED] ). After they post their message, they contact the person ahead of them in line privately with their snailmail info. Then they wait for whatever it was that they wanted. Oh yeah, they will, inturn, be contacted privately by the next person in line. This might happen right away - or much later. Regardless, the member is morally obligated to send the original disk(s) they received - after they have made a copy for themselves - to whomever is next on the list. This is called "sharing" the music and it is something that the List promotes. Of course, private trades and BP between members is also acceptable and encouraged, but PLEASE keep your transactions off-list. If you happen to want to trade for music, or if you do not have burning capability and wish to explore BP, check out the Files section for "member trade lists"; there are several. If you have something to offer, post your list there; or if you have something you'd like to share, start a vine. You'll love it; it's a way of life... Danny, Tho' thrilled that you are torrenting, I'd like you to NOT post torrent addresses here. You may gladly announce when you've uploaded something; the folks that do torrents will be able to find it on their own. I have a couple of reasons for suggesting this, but primarily the questionable legalities of file sharing makes me prefer that the actual http addy does not appear on these pages. That is a very generous offer, Luis... (Michael, I hope you're reading this.) I guess Michael will contact you to take you up on it... Personally, I wouldn't mind copies of these myself, but I cannot burn DVD, so I can't pass it along. If anyone has these and would care to trade for them with audio CD, contact me off-list. Sweet offer, Cris - thank you. Is it possible for you to burn NTSC? I'm not sure if my player will recognize PAL (It's a little over a year old; what do you think?) Michael, if you're reading this; simply re-offer those which Luis sends - and a huge thanks for your offer as well. You guys are making me all misty... Re: [Zappa-List] Re: DVDs Saturday Night live and Mudd Club (Europe Vine)
I guess I answered that then. The Barcelona you sent me plays on my machine, but not on my DVD player... But then, I spend no time in the TV room (outside of football season), and much time in my computer room. So I guess either format works for me (tho' watching it on a larger screen would be nice, simply watching it is the desired goal). This little episode has shown me just how "illiterate" I've become in the digital video realm; I don't know Jack (couldn't tell ya the difference between DVD and VCD). Re: [Zappa-List] NEW JEFF SIMMONS + ZAPPED VINE
Read the FAQ in the files section, Tom... Basically a vine is a way we share music. Some one offers up a recording, and a list is created. The recording gets mailed to each member in turn; they make a copy for themselves, and pass the originals on to the next one on the list. I'm actually okay with this, for the reasons Dawayne has mentioned - OOP, and not being sold... But I do truly appreciate your watching out on this Jim... Re: [Zappa-List] Re: GTOs Vine
The GTO's (Girls Together Outrageously) we're the 'groupies' in a sense for the MOI. When FZ moved into the original Log Cabin, there were some hippies squatting there: Carl Franzoni, and a couple of the girls that would become the GTO's. Frank did not evict them, but rather let them crash around the place - the house was huge, with small grottos dotting the back 40; plenty of space for everyone. Carl and the Girls would go to the early MOI shows and provide "interpretive" dance for the music. Pretty soon the 'girl' section grew to include 8 - 10 dancers. In exchange for their board, the girls would help Gail out around the house, and baby-sit Moon. A couple of the girls fancied themselves as "poets" and the girls would often regale Frank with their interpretive song and dance. Finally Frank said, "You girls should record an album". The GTO's were officially born. If you ever get the chance, read "I'm with the Band" by Pamela (Miller) DeBarres, for an interesting look at this period of Frank's life. SOFA What is GTO? Is it Zappa related? Please forgive myignorance. Jim L For further Z-related fun, please visit http://www.thebignote.com or http://www.killuglyradio.com , thank you. YAHOO! Re: [Zappa-List] Re: VO GTO's Permanent Damage and I'm With The Band - Con...
Lee, At the yahoo groups Zappa_List page, there's a FAQ in the files section that explains vining and how to participate, and what is expected of the participants; check it out. Normally, you'd respond to the LATEST vine message by simply typing " your name-country " after the last name on the list. It couldn't be easier! Nick, You may want to recheck the messages at the yahoo groups Zappa_List page; I think you have a few others before you in line (you responded correctly, but to an earlier message I'm afraid). I could be wrong tho... That is very cool of you, Dawayne; thanks! I had a feeling that maybe white rabbitt needed some coaching on the vine concept... I was supposed to have contacted him this weekend, but have been busier than hell with gigs... Regards, SOFA I'm sending the 2 CDRs of the GTOs/Pamela Des Barres to Scott and bypassing white rabbit because even though I sent them to white rabbit, I'm not sure he/she wants to participate in the vine thing. So next in line is Scott Burnett - I just need Scott's mailing address and they'll be in the mail tomorrow. [Zappa-List] Mental CT Hygiene Delemma
Hey Kids! I think I'd like some opinions, if you'd be so kind. Thanks to brother Bart, in Poland, I have sought out the recording of 801130, Des Moines, IA - billed as "The sickest songlist you've ever seen". It's a B- audience recording (and IMO that B- is kind; I'd rate it a C-). I intend to start a vine of this show... Now I intend to rip this to my machine, and tweeze it for my own enjoyment. I believe that I can improve upon the overall quality; tho there are limits to what you can do, of course (a polished turd is still a turd - FZ). My question to all of you out there: would you rather have a copy warts and all, or would you rather have a SOFA tweezed copy? PLEASE! Don't bother to respond to this with "I want a copy when it's ready" - that is NOT part of the conversation right now. I wanna know if the collectors out there would rather mess with it themselves (if they mess with it at all), or listen to a "pure" artifact. I'd also love to know if a cleaner copy of this show exists, but I kinda doubt it. For example: the Illinois Enema Bandit encore on my copies does not include Sweet Lelani - it cuts off just as the solo starts to roll. And - I think - it's Pick Me I'm Clean that has a nasty warble, until the song finally just cuts out. I would replace these with (god forbid) tracks from around the same time... I wanna seriously mess with this mofo; because right now, I find it damn near unlistenable. But that's me. I really wanna know what you guys think. Because I will gladly pass on this turd as it sits... Let the debate begin... Re: [Zappa-List] Mental CT Hygiene Delemma
There are lots of nice audio editing suites out there John; I happen to use Soundforge 4.5. This is an old program that was given to me a long time ago... They have since upgraded to a 6 or better? Anyway, Sonic Foundry, who make it, have their shit together afa I'm concerned. Editing programs can be costly; I'd find someone with a Soundforge program who'd be willing to share with you - as I did. I like Soundforge because of it's ease. I had no manual, or instructions with it and I could operate it immediately (and I am like supremely stupid with techie things). CoolEdit is another program that's kinda popular... I bet JimL could quote a raft of options. For my money - or complete lack thereof - it's Soundforge.
