Correct, you need 7.5.0 or later for the SB Touch. If you're looking to
cannibalize a VFD, note that the display in the SB2 is the same as the
SB3, but it's mounted very differently.

No, SqueezePlay doesn't need to be on the same box as SBS -- that would
be extremely limiting. Maybe it's connected to MySB.com. Have you tried
connecting to SBS from SP, as opposed to waiting for SBS to find the SP
player? Use My Music > Switch Library.

That's because it's a plugin, meaning that it runs on SBS. Applets run
on the Radio, Touch, or Controller.
In the SBS web ui, go to Settings > Plugins and enable display of 3rd
Party plugins. Then you should see Other Players in the list.

Yes, as I understand it the Touch skin and Nokia770 are the same, except
the Nokia770 is more hard-coded to that devices screen dimensions.
For a Touch skin like the SB Touch there's SqueezePlay, but like pski
says, that isn't really sized for a screen much bigger than the SBT.

Sounds like a hardware issue. Also, you mentioned "newest firmware
update", but the firmware for the original SB hasn't been updated in
ages. Even if by "original" you mean the SB2, that was last updated
with the release of SC 7.4.0 in Sep
If you're using Windows, have you tried Moose? It's album cover view may
be close to what you want.

playing the CDs themselves, since you'll only fit 2-3 FLAC albums on a

Have you tried actually letting the first track play through? I noticed
that the playlist was immediately shuffled when viewing via the web ui,
but on my SB2 the playlist appeared not to be shuffled until after the
first track played through.

Just to be clear, SBS does not insert gaps between tracks. In fact it
supports gapless playback if the rips are correct. Granted, sometimes
the fade-outs on some tracks can be so quiet that it sounds like a gap,
so maybe that's what you're hearing. Or not hearing, as the case may be.

The only downside is that you can't play FLAC on iTunes, but you can
keep your Apple Lossless for that.

Some people find that because of the position of the internal antenna it
helps to stand the SBR on its side. Personally, the SBR that I have
connected via wifi reports about the same signal strength as other SBs,
and it doesn't have problems keeeping the buffer full, etc.

What is your setting for max playlist size? That setting was introduced
with 7.5.0. I believe the default is 500, but maybe yours is set to 30.
