Hi,
Please, see http://www.apogeekits.com/wrist_strap_tester.htm. It can test both
your wrist strap, which you should use and the mat. I personally use a
workbench with a conductive surface, no mat, and test the bench and wrist strap
EVERY time I work on sensitive parts. IMHO

Yes, and watch the ALC level while you are doing it. I found that you can
increase the compression and not trip the 5-7 bars of ALC, but it will sound
terrible. Stay below 10 dB of compression and under 5 bars of ALC for the
smoothest sound and lack of splatter. FWIW.

This is, of course taken out of context, but still a very valuable lesson for
engineers and hams alike. Cheers,

I agree with Doug but from another prospective. Look at the energy budget for
portable work. Less total "consumed" power is good.

How about rugged. My buddy has a K2 on his ATV in a plastic bag on the saddle
pouch. Gets a lot of banging around and keeps on ticking, hi.

Fellow Elecrafters,

laptop supplies are about 15 VDC
and VERY good on filtering and capacity. I
used two silicon diodes in series to drop the voltage to run my 817 on both RX
and TX. It was the size of a double deck of cards. I got mine for $15. Good
luck.

Sorry, I was following the thread using a old wood burning iron. Those tips
were pure screw on copper. No plating. You are right on any of the modern
tip/irons.
