Correct, except that for the iTunes and app stores you will need to enter
your password each time you purchase something. Your Apple Id should already
be there, but for security reasons any purchases including free apps do
require your password.

captcha the first time you attempt to download an app you will be asked
for payment anyway. The two options are a valid credit or debit card or
you can redeem a gift card or certificate you have recently purchased.

Buy a free app, then go through the process. You won't have to provide a credit
card. You obviously won't be able to buy paid apps, but you will be able to get
the free ones.
