Canadian superstar summit! T'was a Kodak Moment. Too bad I didn't have my camera with me ... (Need I say that Richie totally rocked it? The place was still 2/3rds full at 2 AM when he finished, something I've never seen before in that joint ... ) In sorta-vaguely-313-related news, cEvin told me that he hopes to get his upcoming solo project mastered at Hardwax. (He's a serious Chain Reaction fan) Speaking of European travel, hey you 4 Dutchmen of the Apocalypse! I'm coming over to Amsterdam for Queen's Day! I'll be there from 2 PM April 27th 'til the morning of May 1st. Don't have everything finalized yet, but I will be there for the Queen's Day festivities during the daytime and will be going to Awakenings that night (April 29th - Alter Ego live, Sven Vath for 4 hours, Dave Clarke and Steve Rachmad ... woot!). Gimme a shout, you guys. I also expect to be at WMC again, am still working out details on how I'm going to get there (involving going to a Computer Security conference in Orlando 4 days before WMC starts, then sneaking down for WMC during the middle of the work-related conference ... hehehehe). Personally, though, I think everyone should save their pennies and go to Sonar in Barcelona instead ... if you don't have a WMC pass, WMC can be expensive (i.e. US $20 a pop for each party is the norm), it's not easy to see what you want to see without going around to lots of different parties each night (again, serious $$$ if you don't have a conference pass), and then there's the parties you miss out on because they either conflict with another one (e.g. Planet E party vs. seeing Funkstoerung/Andrea Parker/A Guy Called Gerald - auugh!) or you simply don't hear about them (e.g. the Transmat and M_nus shindigs last year). Whereas at Sonar you pay one price (around US $78 last year) for all 3 days, 12 Noon to 10 PM in one location, then Midnight to 7 or 8 (or 9) AM in the beach location, you can float around and check other stuff out without paying separate admission, and heck ... speakin' of soundtrack stuff...anyone know where to find the soundtrack to Tenebre (weird old Dario Argento horror flick) on vinyl? That movie has some sick music on it...by Claudio Simonetti (Goblin) speaking of Simonetti, who could forget the loveably cheesey italo track College Club (1984, Jumbo records) from the soundtrack of the film COLLEGE. A dub version and a vocal version, credited to Herbie Goins Claudio Simonetti, also arranged by Simonetti. I remember this got radioplay in Detroit, talk about weirdness. Cheese vocal chorus aside, it has some classic 80's synth squiggles that Cameo would be envious of, and the drum programming is pretty solid for '84, sounds like there's some 808 tom-toms in there too. hello ionizer, it's gotta be the b-side future of model 500's no ufos. if you like this compi you also should check out Kranke Musique ist schoen Vol II, this one features more electronic disco than the first vol. Yeah, just do it - you really can't go wrong if you have any kind of love for electronic arts, full-stop. The line-up is bound to be superb, with a lot of local talent in addition to more well known acts. The city is of course a beautiful setting. Re: (313) Kompakt Records
i would have to agree. those records are slammin'! they kind of put me in a funk becasue most of them are readily available at dubplate pressure which is down the street form my place so i spend what little money i have on those records, than buying other records. oh well, that is how it goes. at least they're dope records. -craig-
Re: (313) let there be house!
'can you party' was the tod terry track that sampled 'can you feel' by larry heard. there is a vocal and a instrumental version (not on the same disk) both have been re-released by trax recently there is also an accapella, a recent release that has it is kikoman 'open ya mind' on deepfried. james [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Andrew Duke) on 03/01/2000 04:12:04 PM Please respond to Andrew Duke Cognition/In The Mix [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: The Deliverator [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc: 313@hyperreal.org (bcc: James Bucknell/Magazines/Hearst) Subject: Re: (313) let there be house! the subject line is a quote from the vocal version of fingers inc's (larry heard) classic track can you party released on chicago's trax records. i'd give you cat # and year released, but the record is not handy as i type this. hope this helps. andrew duke :) The Deliverator wrote: greetings all, this was quoted in TP's response the other day. I do not want to start a panic, but at the same time I don't want to see original artists getting ripped off either. RE: (313) let there be house!
The Can you feel it sample is the Jacksons off a live album from '78 I think. Its the intro to their song 'Can U Feel it' Which has an amazing intro and video, the Jackson about 300ft high sprinkling 'magic powder' on New York hmmm. RE: (313) let there be house!
could be. i've got a bad headache as i type this (and typed that :)) 'can you party' was the tod terry track that sampled 'can you feel' by larry heard. there is a vocal and a instrumental version (not on the same disk) both have been re-released by trax recently. Funny, I've got a headache too! ;) It's kinda odd... There's a Todd Terry collection just out on Warlock that lists both Can You Party and Can You Feel It -- both have vocal samples that say can you feel it, but they're definitely different sources! The one on Can You Party sounds like an audience live recording, and the one on Can You Feel It is more of a diva vocal... Both great tracks though, and the collection (Todd Terry's Greatest Hits) is excellent. Even weirder -- the collection lists Can You Feel It as by Mr. Fingers, but it's indeed the Todd Terry version. I don't hear any similarities to the Mr. Fingers' version, unless it's the vocal sample (I just remember the instrumental). We got any old-schoolers on the list can give us the story -- and I'm sure there's a few interesting ones ;) -- behind these tracks? .John.
Re: (313) let there be house!
The John Acquaviva Skills Mix CD is available as unmixed vinyl. It's not the original pressing, but it has the acapella version of Can U Feel It which is pretty much that whole speech. It's also a lot easier to come by than the Trax pressing.. Scott Stone [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: Oliver Barkovic [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Matthew L. (313) Hot new Dan Bell mix cd forthcoming...
From today's Tresor newsletter... . Globus Mix Vol. 4 - The Button Down Mind of Daniel Bell mix cd Tresor is proud to present Daniel Bell in his first-ever DJ CD-mix, having previously featured in the Globusmix series Detroit's Blake Baxter and Berlin's own Rok and Mitja Prinz. In compiling this fourth installation to the Globusmix series, Bell recruited the deepest sounds out there: represented and with respect are Herbert, Nick Holder, Anthony Shake Shakir, Thomas Brinkmann, and even Die Sterne not to mention the two tracks by Bell himself. Bell's longtime relationship with the Berlin scene is noted via Hard Wax's Main Street imprint and Lo Soul . The mix works an excellent blend of the Daniel Bell and DBX flavors, stripped-down and minimal with a relaxed tempo overall, but an irresistable and thorough groove capturing the deep- evening flavor of Bell's own club sets. Beginning with stark Techno structures, crisp in texture but still warm with emotion, and building with dry tension and contrast, the soundscape evolves into sensual House with sweeping melodies of synth and vocal work. Bottom line, Daniel Bell redefines the word cool. The DJ has put in nothing artificial or unnecesary, the listener gets out everything you can imagine. Can somebody give me some more information on this label - by the sounds of it their stuff is pretty exceptional. Kompakt is indeed an exceptional label (and distributer as well). They - along with labels like Ware, Popular Org., and Profan - are probably the tops in Cologne- styled techno tech-house. Almost every one of the Kompakt releases are keepers but my favorites are the releases by Dettinger, Paape, Mayer, Dubstar, and Voigt. I suggest you get both Kompakt comps for an inexpensive way to explore the sound that Kompakt has. Here is a Kompakt discography: . Jurgen Paape: Triumph 12 (Kompakt 01) . Dettinger: Blond 12 (Kompakt 02) . Jurgen Paape: Glanz 12 (Kompakt 03) . M. Mayer: 174 12 (Kompakt 04) . Joachim Spieth: Abi 99 12 (Kompakt 05) . Dettinger: Puma 12 (Kompakt 06) .
