whats up from a tropical part of the ocean
hey everyone. i am assuming that the lack of 313 activity is due to everyone having a damn good time at DEMF. all i can say is i am sure it was a blast after seeing the pics that dan sicko sent me. thanks dan. the only positive thing about me missing DEMF is the fact that i am on the way to Hawaii. while there i get to see Roy Davis Jr. that is what i am looking forward to. i'll see everyone at next years DEMF. jeff
DEMF
just a quick questionare the sets from DEMF going to be archived in an audio format so that i can download them off the internet? and if so, when. i am really desperate to hear some of the shit that went down. thanks. jeff

DEMF finale
Hey. This is going to be real shortI'm going to St. Louis tomorrow morn to find a house and i need to recuperate. This has been the most blessed weekend I've had in the city in years without a doubt. Why the hell did the CPop stage SHAKE?!? The past three days, I've WANTED to check out the underground vibebut the CPop stage was like an effing MAGNET! A local, Drew (??) was putting in work last night mercifully pulling me away from Gary Chandler (no knock on Chandler at all...but he used to be a HOUSE dj, and i didn't come to demf to hear music i could hear in detroit clubs). We were muddy...and cold...and gigging our asses off. Damn near forgot. Can I give a shout out to Bruce the effing BONGO KING! He worked with Minx, with Mike Grant, and with Drew, and every time he pulled all TYPES of stuff out of his ass. How the hell he was able to play in sync with DJs of so many different styles I'll never know. Didn't get to see Saunderson, but I did get to see May. He should've been the one to take us ALL homebut the people in the crowd didn't really know who he was, and they died for Hawtin. Totally understandable... So we're waiting for May to startand he begins with something that SOUNDS like the beginning to SLAVE TO THE RHYTHM (Grace Jones). A deep dark voice intoning SOUND.RHYTHM.EXPRESSION...GRACE Just when I thought he we break into Nude Photo, or maybe Wiggin', or maybe IT IS WHAT IT IS...what the hell does he pull out? THE BIG PAYBACK by James Brown. DAMN. You can just imagine where it went from there. All I know is that when he played NO UFO'Smy voice was so hoarse from shouting when me and my boys screamed the lyrics it sounded like this THey SAy there is NO HOpeTHEY say nO ufO...wHY iS nO head uP higH mayBE you see them FLY! this was the shit. i will never forget it. (tangential sidenote...why was DJ Bone so helluva that we had to drag ourselves to see May?) --- Lester Kenyatta Spence [EMAIL PROTECTED] Assistant Professor, Political Science Washington University at St. Louis We illuminate the contradictions and call it the light ---

DEMF Lists
Okay. Unsolicited or not, whether you care or not, I am listing my personal highlights of the festival each day from an insiders perspective. Delete if you will. oh yeah, these are in NO ORDER whatsoever. FRIDAY'S TOP MOMENTS 1. Staying up all night helping to build the television wall with some truly dedicated people. 2. Falling off a ladder while hanging colored tile squares 3. Taking DJ Spooky to play an unannounced backroom set at Motor 4. Purchasing a fucktrance t shirt via DJ Magda 5. Keith Kemp's fucking SLAMMING set at Motor. Somebody get this boy a residency ASAP! 6. Almost running over Tim Price with a buggy. 7. Slamming 2 bottles of Red Bull and twitching uncontrollably SATURDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS 1. Looking in awe of the crowd for Stacey Pullen with Mr Sicko and VanLoo 2. Dan Sicko's photos. Breathtaking. 3. Establishing Hoedown Records, Detroit's first all trance label with Adam Lee Miller from Adult (look out DEMF 2001...) 4. Theo Parrish taking people beyond house and into church. Same goes for Mike Grant and Mike Clark 5. Bill Vanloo and Mike Dykehouse's sets. Two to watch in the next few yrs. 6. The extended hardwax set. Simply Amazing SUNDAY's HIGHLIGHTS 1. The Planet E Party (sorry. I know I am biased...but I thought we did okay...) 2. Dennis Archer on stage with Slum Village. What a juxtaposition THAT was! 3. The Ectomorph live PA ( I only caught a brief glimpse of it...but I swear they get better every time i hear them! ) 4. Seeing an old guard from the Kalamazoo tribe headline a stage. Fanon Flowers gets his moment in the Detroit spotlight finally =) ( I was off site most of the day...so I didn;t get to see much...any feedback on that day would be cool!) MONDAY's HIGHLIGHTS 1. Enjoying a pristine opening set from Clark Warner. Flawless, excellent choice of tunes that complemented the beautiful weather. No rain! 2. Shake 3. Richie Hawtin closing the damn thing in true style. What a finale! 4. Derrick May and Rolando's sets. ESPECIALLY the end of Derrick's set. TRULY the closest thing to spirituality on stage. 5. FINALLY MEETING K HAND! 6. Getting the final estimated 3 day attendance total (900,000!) 7. Theorem's Live PA and Sean Deason's live PA back to back, and Mr Plaslaiko going off 8. Seeing so many people come together, dance, laugh and enjoy themselves without scarcely any harm or injury. This was truly the antidote to last year's woodstock 9. Walking down the street with the festival press co-ordinator, only to see Paris the black fu in a lovely little see-thru skirt. 10.Seeing Detroit finally get some respect in the main stream culture I am sure there is so much more that I am forgetting. But its 145am and I have had very little sleep these past few days. To those who were there: Thank you. Your energy is what validated working my ass off to make this festival work. My hat is off to you for the love and support you have shown everyone involved. To those who did not make it: Your presence was missed but your spirit and soul were felt. Perhaps next year you can head up and see this magnificent festival firsthand =) There is no place like home. Rob

I will go if I have to swim through shark infested waters or take to being a stowaway... whatever! I just wish I had been there to see the faces of all the DJs. Re: [313] DEMF 'Hurt Feelings'
Alan I think the reason you haven't been asked to play is because you don't play what the rest of Detroit is into anymore. That is just fucking bullshit, dude. So going by that logic, since I don't wear Hello Kitty and Ecko Unlimited - or whatever it is - gear I shouldn't be a fan? ;) One thing that Detroit has always had going for it [listen] is innovation. I don't care if you wrote this post when you were drunk or not, listen to me, this is a flame. Detroit has always gotten the short end of the stick with regards to what the masses are generally exposed to day in and day out. Well this festival was during the day, and I saw all ages, some of them hearing it probably the very first time, some of whom really thought it was cool. People are coming around to it. I'm only tangenting on your point a little.. I spoke to people at random who looked like your average Joe or who I had never seen at a club or anything, and they totally were in awe. Remember when you were at your first underground party? I do. That's what makes this event so special, for me, because I get to see people who were in my spot once (freaking) and this time there is alot more people. I even spoke to the girl who was homecoming queen at my high school who turned out and was saying in summary, 'where has this been all my life?' and she defines the essence of popularity. ..Fuck cliques, fuck egos, fuck politics, Detroit artists are originals. Grass roots. Don't fuck with Detroit. Alan does what he enjoys and stays true to himself and his ideals. The fight is not over, Detroit. C'mon let's come together and win this war. I can't believe I'm yelling and screaming these things: I just got back from this beautiful festival and I thought it was already won, and then I read these emails. Listen man you can't just play follow the leader in this city and gain any permanent notoriety. Though I've never heard a set I own a few of your records, which are solid, and have an indication of what you play from the comments you've made on this list. You're from Scotland, right? Have you ever even been to Detroit? I can't claim to know Carl's reasonings or intentions for doing the festival the way he did, but if you want to know the current state of affairs in Detroiters' ears it's rap and booty. Both of which solid foundations of their own but a far cry from any electronic musician's output like Alan, from the D. Hard and minimal is my guess, the way Detroit used to do it, and from all reports mixed up in inspirational style. But with the exception of Hawtin, Mills and yourself (and maybe Rolando), it doesn't seem to me that that's what Detoit musicians are into anymore. Though it's not necessarily my favorite type of music, hard-and-minimal, as you imply above definitely has a presence in the D--that was my point. Alan is one of the stalwarts of this blend of sinister funk here, if not the only one still playing it dutifully. People from other cities and countries come here and look at the city and want to play hard--this is why. I mean c'mon, you take one look at our city today and you think if a jackhammer could speak it would. You're failing to recognize the impact of this genre. Maybe heavy metal is more your bag in this setting? The biggest point is that all environments affect people in different ways, and it's all legitimate, that's because we're all human--perfect creatures by design--that's my opinion... Alan Oldham should have played the DEMF because he has represented Detroit techno since the third wave. And Jay Denham should have played, too, but that's all I'm gonna say and keep it private if you want more thoughts. Plain and simple, they were dissed. I think Detroit and I think Carl Craig, Moodyman and Theo Parrish. I think Moods and Grooves and Theorem. All that stuff is truly getting attention now but all I'm saying is the festival should have accomodated for all the creators. They're the ones getting attention for moving stuff forward. You sound like one of those people who only spins the shit in the dance room top 10. I don't like you. I like the Detroit sound you helped to pioneer. But I think somewhere it got stuck in a groove. And the rest of Detroit kept moving on. I can't believe how rude you are! I still like what you're doing, and I think lots of Europe like it too. I just don't think that your lack of invitation is a personal thing: it's more that your sound no longer represents present day Detroit. I take that back. I can't believe how ignorant you are. You should have been at the show. If Hawtin's or Fanon Flowers's or even Shake's sets were any indication, techno is here to stay!! I'm keen to hear how you (very very lucky) people at DEMF sum up the Detroit sound circa 2000. Cheers Rol Soul city. All creeds. Peace, Horsepower

One Final Note
One more thing-- Applause to the city of Detroit for letting this thing happen and to Planet E and all the volunteers for making it happen. It is what it is. It was history, in the making. We can sit at our keyboards here and argue about it forever but the important thing is that many people were impressed, outside of the techno realm, which is what will allow it to happen again, which I believe was the original goal. Thank you Detroit
Unfortunately, I had to leave a little after six o'clock yesterday, to get back to Iowa City at 2am, to get up for work at 6:30, but everything I saw @ DEMF was astounding. That was hands down the coolest thing I've ever seen, done, or been a part of. And if anyone tries to say the crowd was not a part of the DEMF they are foolish. I can't believe I spent three days amidst 900,000 people, adding alcahol in the most diverse (ehnicity and age) crowd I've ever seen without witnessing any violence or even stupid drama. Amazing. The vibe was incredible. Everywhere I walked I heard people saying things like, this is beautiful, why can't this happen every weekend (perhaps that was a bit naive but you get the idea), etc. I'm just in awe, and it hasn't even begun to sink in yet. To everyone I had the pleasure of meeting, it was a blast. It felt like home. Detroit left a serious impression on about 15 Iowans. I didn't see anyone less than completely satisfied. DEMF favorites: Theo Parrish, The Roots, Derrick Plasaiko and Fucktrance, Detroit. Oh, and the old dancing hippie at the mainstage and CPOP Sunday afternoon. I'll have to post a picture of him when I get them developed. Had to send a thank you before reading all of the aftermath, so until then, adieu. Tristan __ Do You Yahoo!? Hey Dustin, Have you tried telephoning any pirate stations around your area? That's how I get gigs. I play for free but it's a start and allows me to play a load of stuff that I could never play in a club. If you don't know any pirate stations try asking the dj's at clubs you go to. You've just gotta have the guts to walk up thinking you're it and tell 'em so too. The only way you're ever gonna get gigs is to be a bit ballsy and basically kick the dj off the decks and take over, you know what I mean? Try asking at the shop(s) you get rekkids from too. Underground stores tend to have a major link with underground promoters. Music is a love u c and they're all friends with each other so you could have a major resource sitting right in front of you. Hope that helps... Tho' I spose you've already tried all this if you're asking the thickies on here;) Pretty much a sign of desperation if you ask me;) Good luck, Nick Walsh(DJ Pacific;), York, UK --- Dustin A Sledgianowski [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: maybe this is not so music related but anyway i have problems in Florida getting attention for my music i do not get gigs - it is next to impossible is there anyone else on this list from florida??? central florida in particular - maybe you know what i am going through and can help me all the music i play is 313 related - mostly lush techno thanks - dustin YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Re: [313] help me i am drowning here
You have to remember what state he is talking about. In Florida if its not breaks, prog house, ragga jungle, or prog trance no one will listen to you. There used to be a few 'underground' stations on am but those have since gone off the radio. Electronic music down there is ususally drug and rave related. Theres not even things like deep house or funky disco house for that matter. I go and visit central fl where I used to live many times a year and I always basicly have to force people to listen to the 313 techno/electro I bring for them. They have caught onto ghetto tech but now a few have been asking me for tapes and cds which is a start. It will be very hard to bring actual techno into the central fl area. Techno to people down there is breaks or any other type of electronic music. Most have no knowledge to an actual genre of techno. They have just started catching on to 'plasticman' as they spell it. My best advice is to give some tapes out to the club promoters and tell them to listen to it and keep listening to it over and over untill they like it. Once you have them liking your stuff then you will get others to. Much luck to whoever in Fl now is trying hard to bring any other type of music into Fl because it will be a fairly difficult task. -stacey

Gimme a D!
Yes... that was fun. My obligatory wake up late, hell-day at work follows the festival. So many of my newest and oldest friends were there. It was quite a spectacle. To think what this list has given me in 4.5 short years... thank you everyone! To whomever was responsible in any way for throwing that event, congrats and hugs! There will be more festivals. they don't even have to be BIGGER and BETTER. They just have to bring people together and musically kick ass. PLUR man! Rave on! These people are in my mind the antithesis of posturing, politics, ass-kissing, boring artistry, status validation, etc.: Shake, Bill VanLoo, Sean Deason, Derek Plaslaiko, and Carlos Souffront. They were responsible for a great deal of the laughs, smiles, whoops and hollars, and having funs and they make me proud that 313/248/734 has been my home for 19 of 21 years of life. Besides any interaction involving aformentioned people, the high points for me were: meeting so many 313'ers this weekend and having the time to have real conversation with them Magda throwing down an asskicking party starting set. I was thinking tikiman... what a stupid name. Then I heard those two magic words, and went to check it out. Those tracks at a massive volume are pretty phenomenal. Then they went into the live dub set, and I almost crapped my pants. That's not something I was expecting to get out of this festival. Theorem's set has much improved since last time. Hooray! Anything *67 related... Ectomorph was weird incarnate. It's the third time I've seen both May and Hawtin, and last night they played their most inspired, imo. The Roots got the most crowd involvement. Their second hour was pure funk, fun, and fucking around. Shake! Shake! It was kind of kooky actually... Exactly 24 hours after BMG had his patented poker face for the Ectomorph set, he was acting like he was being tickled through Shake's entire set. The doubles he rocked early on, and when he threw Tracks for my Mother were two memories... Low points: I missed Theo cause I was too tired, and Larkin and Fowlkes. : Maybe a bulletin board near the fountain or the wall o tele's that have last minute updates to the schedule. There was a bunch of stuff that I didn't need to miss, but I missed cause I didn't realize they were going on. No Mos Def either. poop. Was A Guy Called Gerald playing live with the drummer and the singer in pink? cause that was pretty awesome too. Certainly the best drum n bass I heard this weekend whoever they were. Don't egg me on! n8
DEMF Numbers
Hey all, thanks to the DEMF massive for an amazing weekend-- I just got word that the original count of 900,000 festival-goers was wrong. The actual tally turns out to be 1.5 million people, with 750,000 people on monday alone. Which makes DEMF the largest free festival in the world. Dope. Dale

well, from what I understand from the article in the newspaper this morning, the city isnt allowed to count officially...but the estimated figure was 900,000 plus. You have to decrease that a little a bit for triple counts (example:i went all three days,so perhaps I was count three times). d From: James Bucknell [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313]DEMF--Attendacne figures Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 16:48:37 -0400 Just wondering if anybody had a source ofr official attendacne figures. thanks james - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Re: [313]DEMF--Attendacne figures
ummm, ok - is anyone else not quite sure about these numbers? 750,000 seems to be a super high number to me, especially considering that we parked less than 2 blocks away all weekend. how many people come down to the fireworks every year? i thought that number was around a million, and when there are that many people downtown it's packed crazy can't move can't park can't breath. trust me, i'm not dissing the attendance - it was amazing - but i'm just wondering if these numbers aren't a little high? g well, from what I understand from the article in the newspaper this morning, the city isnt allowed to count officially...but the estimated figure was 900,000 plus. my DEMF
so i guess Im the last one to get to this...i'll try and make it as sweet as possible. I may be taking a risk in saying that DEMF hit emotionally deeper for those from Detroit. Detroit has often been called a city of ruins, a graveyard. It's people have been often been put down, criticized and ridiculed for living in a city that many see as dirty, dangerous and hopeless. This weekend, that all changed. For me personally, the DEMF proved to those nay sayers that Detroit _could_ come together, in peace fun (there were reported fights on saturday night though). It proved that our pride can shine brighter than any critism, any city council bill to tear down our cherished landmarks. We proved to all those who have looked down upon us to be wrong. To open myself even more here (i dont do emotions). Every time I leave detroit, on the way to the airport, I weep a bit - as if Im leaving some sort of long distance lover. I feel as though a part of me is being left behind. For someone who moved eight times in 12 years of childhood-Detroit gave me a place to call home. This weekend I felt like everyone shard the pride, beauty and glory that I see in Detroit, it was finally understood. To wrap it up. Thank you to everyone involved for making my love go deeper and making me want to preach my mission of passion even more.I am in a city industry full of people constantly in a hurry to forge for their own survival (nyc) and Detroit always reminds me that there are those who know life is worth much much more. Special thank yous to Terrance Parker for being one of the truest men alive. Detroit doesn't have Body Soul , but it does have TP. Thank you to my mentors -laura g, dan sicko ian malbon...you always push my mind, even when you're giving me $ to put in Paris' thong. Also to ALL my friends in the D-u know who u are- you make it that much harder to leave every time. tiredyours Diana Potts ps.Andy is a fox. pss. hell yeah
time to throw my hat in the ring... a perfect example of how truly awesome this event was is that no one complained - there were no pessimists lurking about. sure, there were technical difficulties rain shitty bathrooms cancellations unannounced reschedulings - and it all came down to so what? - how can you even have time to bitch about anything when something so great is happening all around you? today at work, not only do my feet hurt from dancing but my cheeks are a little sore from smiling so much. it was truly historic momentous and completely deserving of every word of praise. since so many of my detroit friends have moved away over the years, it was nice to feel like detroit was _the_ place to be this weekend - in the whole entire world!! as it should be. highlights - theo parrish carlos/spacelings bassheads/ectomorph/adult the dancer on lauren flax's stage rolando aril brikha the roots the cpop stage _all_ weekend (the party never stopped over there) all the great sets at foran's friday seeing so many interesting beautiful happy people in one place wow - i could talk about it forever - and i probably will. much love - kbk
DEMF report from Sonic Net
Detroit Report #1: Techno Fans Arrive For Electronic Music Fest Organizers expect hundreds of thousands of people at free event. Staff Writer Brian Hiatt reports: DETROIT - This gritty, depopulated city is hardly known as a tourist mecca. But don't tell that to Otto Koppius, a 28-year-old techno fanatic who, along with a group of similarly inclined friends, flew nine hours from Rotterdam, the Netherlands, to attend the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, which begins Saturday (May 27). And Koppius and his friends aren't alone, he said Friday, standing in front of Hart Plaza, the waterfront park that will host the free festival. We met some people from Belgium, from Sweden, from Portland, Oregon, from New York, people from all over who are coming here, he said. This is the hometown [of techno] - this is where it all started. It's like techno is finally getting the respect it deserves. - Beniah Leuschke, festival attendee Another group of fans gathered at Hart Plaza said they could feel anticipation for the festival everywhere in the city. Everyone we've talked to here, every single human being, said they're going, said Beniah Leuschke, who sat with friends on the edge of the park's underground amphitheater, which will serve as one of the festival's stages. It's like techno is finally getting the respect it deserves here. Leuschke, 26, and five friends drove into town Friday from Kansas City, Mo. As of Friday evening, though, electronic-music fans hadn't yet stormed Detroit en masse. Unlike many multiday rock festivals, the three-day event hasn't attracted large numbers of fans camping outside its grounds. Paula Makar, a festival vendor setting up for the event at the park, looked aghast at the very idea of camping out. I don't think electronic-music types are camping types, she said, shaking her head. In fact, camping is prohibited at Hart Plaza. Out-of-town fans will be staying in hotels, not roughing it. But many visitors probably won't be sleeping much, anyway. In addition to the festival itself, which will run from noon until midnight each day, promoters will hold after-parties throughout the city each night, all night. We're gonna stay up the whole time. There's the official after-parties, the rave parties - it's gonna be sick, said Joe Jesus David, an 18-year-old from the Detroit suburb of Southville. David and his friends were among the few fans hanging out by a nearly empty Hart Plaza on Friday evening. The huge park, which beginning Saturday will be filled with thumping beats and, according to promoters' predictions, hundreds of thousands of fans, was silent, except for the gentle hiss of the artificial waterfall near its center. Dozens of white vending tents were already set up, and the festival's multiple stages were bursting with sound equipment. I think a lot of people don't have a clue how huge this is going to be, how important this is, David said. I think a lot of people who don't listen to this music will at least gain an appreciation for it. The festival's headliners include iconic Detroit DJs Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Richie Hawtin and Stacey Pullen, along with hip-hop acts the Roots and Mos Def. http://www.sonicnet.com/news/archive/story.jhtml?id=971423pid=859928
