I'm not dale, but I am a big fan of Ron's work. Ive seen both his Live PAs,
instalments and paintings and all are done very well come highly suggested
if you get to see/hear them. Dale has this incredible painting of Ron's in
his house, every time I see it I see something new just marvel. And well,
Dale too is a visual artist-he takes some mean photos and did his cover(s)
art.

I've run into alot of producers djs who are also visual artists as well,
both with digital and other mediums. There has been the discussion before,
once or twice on here, how art connects so closely with music. So the number
of DJs Producers who do both, are a testament to that for sure.

ok,im tired.sorry if the above didnt exactly flow.

i love hawtin. i just think the future of detroit techno will come from
people that spin detroit more than once or twice a year. i think it will
come from someone spinning vinyl regularly in the ghettos, not some cd in
everyone's stereo at home in the suburbs. after they innovate then they can
travel the world and distribute the sounds; they can become figureheads and
ambassadors of our music. what is really influencing the future of detroit
techno is what is happening in detroit.

It's a good record -- but does it spin from the center out like the
original?!

very clever [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Just as a coincidence I found a review of Powerbass while diging through
my old sttuff, this came from a small indepent magazine from Dallas, TX
called The Vibe.

from: The Vibe, April 1991
review: by Luke Sardello

KEVIN SAUNDERSON
Powerbass
white label/US

Kevin Saunderson returns with an impressive track that has
reminiscence of techno innovators on the latest Inner City LP. This song
along with his massive 'funky, funk, funk,' prove Saunderson's loyalty
to Detroit techno. Kevin has received some undeserved heat lately for
the release of the last Inner City LP, and it's nice to see him put out
a couple of slammin' tracks that keep him, along with Juan Atkins and
Derrick May, the leaders of the techno sound.

Also found this old techno chart from 91, got this chart after buyin
the special limited edition copy of UR - Punisher , this came from a
short lived record store in Dallas called Excel records, it was started
by some former employs of Bills Records and Tapes
http://www.billsrecords.com/ has lots od Detroit techno from that time
period, I think the guy that wrote that Powerbase review worked at the
store.

Re: [313] loops/lock grooves

2000-07-17 Thread Neil Wallace

The distance traveled is greater but the time for one revolution remains
the same.

The same principle applies in audio cassettes where the tape travels at
differing speeds at diffferent point on the tape (due to more or less
tape on the winding reel) but it does not matter so long as this is the
same at playback as it was during record.

On a related note I saw a hexagonal record in a shop window the other day
which had haxagonal grooves!!

On Sat, 15 Aug 1998, Joshua M. Hill wrote:

i agree that the needle always travels at the same velocity, the record is

but the circumference of a locked groove at two different positions on the
record will be different lengths. traveling the same velocity on each of
these grooves, one will be longer than the other. imagine a needle on the
outside edge, every revolution it will cover about 31 inches. on the inside
edge, it will cover about 12.5 inches per revolution. now if these are both
played at the same velocity, your going to have to find the correct place at
which a 133+1/3 rpm loop can be placed on the record.

 cheers.

on the outside, the record has a larger diameter. played at 33-1/3 rpms,
  you
could play a locked groove with less bpm. on the inside, it is smaller
 and
you could play more bpm. i mean, the difference in circumference is like
 19
  inches! (2pi5 - 2pi2). maybe i'm just wrong.

His use of subtle rhythm building just here and there in all the right

As Marsel says, there are elements of the original Detroit sound, hints of

what is techno? is techno still alive? is there still any good techno
coming out? well, whatever.. i bought some records yesterday and i would
like to share my opinios about them.

 |||

 robert hood - nighttime world volume 2 - cd - m-plant - m-p318.cd
nighttime world (volume 1) was robert hood's double pack release through
pulsinger's outlet cheap from austria. on that release he successfully
combined jazz elements with minimal techno, together with a good portion
 of
soul. this cd album, volume 2, sees fourteen beautiful tracks and with
those he even moves more away from his minimal style. first track after
 the
intro goes smoothly downtempo and funky, as some other will do as well.
most remarkable for me is that 'only' about three go in a more 'regular
hood way', but nevertheless, as said, it's a very gorgeous soulful album.
most tracks come in a lush, beautiful ambient way, reminding to older jon
beltran albums and neil olliveira's 313 soundtrack, and also mills'
 ambient
sound scapes. some come with soft beats, some with smooth breaks, but the
soul is definitely always there. a very stronge real smooth, warm laidback

 album.

 millsart - every dog has its day - 2x12 - axis - ax-20
shortly after his lifelike album, and several purpose makers, jeff mills
comes up with this double pack. first track takes of with the smooth tight

mills'feeling, 4/4, but pretty downtempo. second track goes more
 downtempo,
string-based, even somewhat breaky. side b brings two tracks, first track
in a real may-styled positivism, soft strings, lush melodies, wonderful
stuff. second track goes ambient, somewhat darker, deep things. second
platter, side c goes again in more soft mode, still mills, but from his
most romantic side, dreamy strings, gentle snares, and deeply, deeply
soulful. side d continues in this lush style, again more downtempo techno,

strings, funky melodies all around. second track maybe comes most close to

his more familiar things, as it is pretty direct with a smooth euporhic
feeling, last short ambient piece makes the circle round.. for me it's
really best thing he's done, at least the last three years. axis as it
should be, a timeless release as several others, which made axis so really

 wonderful!!

2000-07-17 Thread Jochem_Peteri

Allthough my feelings about the Mills 2pack are the same, that is that its very
pleasent and accesible it does seem a bit old-fashioned . Classic techno like
May etc used to produce so are we full circle? even hood seems to flirt with
real music more and more so is innovation at this point in time not an issue
and do we just want quality products? or is innovation to be found in the
symbiosis of old and new? I felt that in minimalism techno hasd found a unique
quality and even subject matter interesting enuff to explore on its own. I still
think there´s a lot of unexplored terrain in that area which might define techno
and shape it into the effective language it can be. One of the most direct and
focussed styles ever. I like the way techno is goin, that is i truly enjoy
craftmanship but i prefer to be challenged just a litle bit more. In other
words, Mills is playin safe and that is a shame, the man has been pushin techno
towards extremes which in my opinion is his biggest quality. Same goes for hood
by the way. So a definate 9+ for both but a litle note on the side, stay angry!

I guess I'm just happy to have a release that is choc full of quality
tracks,
whether it pushes forward the techno envelope or not.
Too many artists are copying other artists, the originators. At least
you can't accuse this release of that - even though it has a lot of classic
elements in there, it still sounds fresh compared to the majority of whats
in the racks at the moment.
My jury is still out on the new Hood release though!

Allthough my feelings about the Mills 2pack are the same, that is that its
 very
pleasent and accesible it does seem a bit old-fashioned . Classic techno
 like
May etc used to produce so are we full circle? even hood seems to flirt
 with
real music more and more so is innovation at this point in time not an
 issue
and do we just want quality products? or is innovation to be found in the
symbiosis of old and new? I felt that in minimalism techno hasd found a
 unique
quality and even subject matter interesting enuff to explore on its own. I
 still
think there´s a lot of unexplored terrain in that area which might define
 techno
and shape it into the effective language it can be. One of the most direct
 and
focussed styles ever. I like the way techno is goin, that is i truly enjoy
craftmanship but i prefer to be challenged just a litle bit more. In other
words, Mills is playin safe and that is a shame, the man has been pushin
 techno
towards extremes which in my opinion is his biggest quality. Same goes for
 hood
by the way. So a definate 9+ for both but a litle note on the side, stay
 angry!

I had similar experiences
with Stacey Pullen and Derrick May. It seems like they don't trust the crowd
will get the deep and challenging tunes, and instead stick with safe and
easy discoloops.

H. I just can't equate either of those two 'playing it safe'. They're
just not like that as individuals. They play what they're feeling. DM
challenges the crowd by playing a wide spectrum. What is 'deepness' anyway?
What passes as 'deepness' can be as cliched as anything else.

Psyche/ Jeff Mills

2000-07-17 Thread Ben

Just got my version of Psyche/BFC Elements (completed my Carl Craig
collection!!) Craig is the man!! he was ahead of even himself back then,
just wish I was listening to his stuff back then, well I would have been
Nine years old :-)

A side note, after reading the Jeff Mills interview posted on here I think
it's a terrible shame that he will not perform in the U.K again. I totally
understand his reasons, but can't help feeling sad at what myself and the
British public will be missing. I saw the man once and he was amazing, i'd
love to see him again.

P.s Sorry but does anyone know what BFC stands for? Or the reason for this
pseudonym?

Cheers. Ben.

I was able to catch Mike Taylor's set at the New Med on Woodward Saturday
night and have to say that it would be in your best musical interest to go
see him Wednesday the 26th at Foran's for his next live performance, I don't
do all that great of reviews, but I'll just it was very well worth my
effort, and would think anyone who might be able to make should. As for the
rest of the show unfortunately, due to other circumstances I had to run
after Mike, but maybe somebody else can say something.

[313] Claude Young in Minneapolis

2000-07-17 Thread FRED MCMURRY
Just saw Claude Young last night and it was off the hook!!! Yes, three
exclamation points are necessary. He was working the decks like he was going
for the gold at the DMC championship. Elbows, chin, and nose were used to
juggle beats and scratch. He flipped the crossfader with his nose several
times. The man is like a small town...blink and you miss him! He has to be
one of the fastest DJs around.
Talking to him afterward he said that Minneapolis was the best town he'd
been to so far on his tour (thanks, we're chuffed). Apparently in Houston
the crowd wanted to hear trance and just couldn't get what he was doing.
I'm very very tired and very happy to have cut short my camping trip to
catch this incredibly talented DJ perform. If you ever get the chance, drop

i've got a copy of the record, cyclone.
in a nutshell, for a record to be a one-revolution
in duration lock groove, it's got to be exactly 133. bpm.
because jaguar isn't this tempo, any loop is going to be a loop
in name alone, ie not a lock groove that repeats over and over.
so the loop 1 and loop 2 tracks are essentially just mills' looping
of a bit of his own sequences that he did for the remix. but because
he couldn't do a lock groove, he just let a four bar sequence of his
remix play again and again for about 2 minutes. hope this helps.
andrew duke :) btw, that's an incredibly sweet thing for you to do
for your friend. i had an ex buy me a skinny puppy record as a gift
(back in 1985ish) and i still think back to that moment with fond memories
(that a girl would get me something like that that i would like so much
that only she would know about). guys love to get flowers too, wish

techno/idm long sale list (rare/good stuff)

2000-07-17 Thread AeOtaku
Techno Sale List:

First off: please when you respond DON’T send
the whole list back to me, just what you want to get.

Hithis list is the second-to-last list as I try to get my collection
down below 200 12”s and 200 CD’s before I move. First off,

if you want to cut a deal on a nice sized order. I just really need
to sell these records and make some space.

You can have any ten $10 CD’s for $75 as a package.
You can have all (approx.) 43 CD’s listed below for $350
including postage in the US (add $15 for international).
Most of the CD’s I haven’t really played, should be in good shape

i love hawtin. i just think the future of detroit techno will come from
people that spin detroit more than once or twice a year. i think it will
come from someone spinning vinyl regularly in the ghettos, not some cd in
everyone's stereo at home in the suburbs. after they innovate then they can
travel the world and distribute the sounds; they can become figureheads and
ambassadors of our music. what is really influencing the future of detroit
techno is what is happening in detroit.

My work is not in the traditional sense visual. When I have a show in a
gallery I do sound installations. The installation is usually concieved
after viewing the space it is intended for. My installations consist only
of speakers and the sound which is also produced after viewing the space.
My work is about the pure perception of the sound.

I did a collaborative 24 hour live p.a. last summer with documentary maker

My name is Dennis Donohue, and I'm originally from the D, though i live in

If you wouldn't mind spilling some stories of your music, I'd like to hear

arts background - in fact I turned down a partial scholarship to CCS and to
Kendall university.
What type of music are you into? What form of visual presentation do you
provide? Do you make your visuals or sample them from movies\shows\web?
I don't really have enough money to establish a label of my own, though i
do make and release my music on cds (because it is relatively inexpensive
as far as music promotion goes.)

Yes,

My name is Jared Wilson and I have a b.f.a. from the Center for Creative
Studies plus been a d.j./ producer for eight years. My artwork
(although

I would not draw a line between artwork and music) during the past few
years has concentrated on sound. I have had two one man exhibitions in
the
past year and a half. Both of which involved sound installations based
off

of rhythm. I have not had a trad art show in a while as I have been
concentrating mostly on my new record label. If anyone has any questions
about what I am doing I would be eager to have a more in depth dialogue.

for those of you in detroit, a few of ron's paintings are currently on
display at the robert maniscalco gallery (17329 mack, far east side of
detroit) through july 25.

i am also lucky enough to have a zakrin painting in my living room (wicked
birthday gift), it hangs above my tv, and it does a very fine job of
diverting my focus away from the tube.

his live sets (as ghost 200) are highly experimental - he samples toys to
get his sounds. he hasn't done a live set in a while, afaik.

ron is definitely 'one to watch' in the detroit art world.

and for other detroit visual artists in close relation to techno, 313's very
own meighen micho. . .i would say tyree guyton is someone anyone looking
into current detroit art politics should check out (may not be techno-y
but certainly detroit-y).

also, glad to hear mike's set went well for sat.'s sonic boom...anyone care
to post a review of other sets /or the space itself?
