yeah, i heard it. didn't really do anything for me, especially after the string of amazing releases he's put out recently (metropolis, every dog). it's good though, the one track one it's own side particularly stood out. - Original Message - From: Kyle J Dupuy [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2001 9:22 AM Subject: [313] jet set? maybe i just missed it, but i don't recall reading any mention of mills' latest edition to the purpose maker series. i like it. it's more tech-housey than some of his other stuff, not quite as banging, and a little bit slower. some nice bass lines, as is typcial with many of his tracks. anyone else have any input? Dear List, Don't be so quick to slam someone for asking a question. It leads to people not asking questions, which leads to a 313 mailing list with 5 messages a day, 4 of which concern M*by and 1 from spam meisters about Juan. Anyway I thought it was a good question. I think that with a careful touch, you could blend our music well and maybe provide some real emotion to offset the blandness of hands-in-the-air trance. My first track would be the original Knights of the Jaguar. Then I would check out: -Red Planet (Stardancer, Ultra Violet Images, Sex in Zero Gravity, etc etc etc) -Derrick -Stacey Maybe drop 'Good Life' at the appropriate moment and watch the crowd go off. I'm thinking lots of strings, warmth, emotion. yeah. -Dave --- Simon Dennis [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: i need some suggestions for good traks to buy as i have to do a tagteam djing thing with a guy heavily into paul van dyk style trance anthems. bear in mind i haven't bought any new vinyl for about eight months, anything deemed essential from this time period would be great. maybe someone who works in a shop (say, Record Time) could advise me on all the new releases coming out of detroit and the u.s. as i wouldn't want to ignore those...:) and how the hell do you blend hands-in-the-air trance with deepest detroit? any suggestions please. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] __ Do You Yahoo!? Yeah, or the Ian Pooley's 'It's an Honour' remix of it, for a somewhat more trance-acceptable feel (and still a very nice track IMO). Great recommendations! I suppose the majority of the message is pretty topical, isn't it? Stardancer is definitely your best bet, although not 'last 8 months new'. Fading the Edges by Claude Young on his Deta label would make an interesting mix, particularly the track Angels. I'm convinced minimal techno can be mixed out of anything at the same tempo, so hunt down the more recent Hood. His Technatural EP is still in the crate. The Francois K remix of Kraftwerk's Expo 2000 would probably work nicely towards the beginning of the set too. It has a couple of nice places to pull off an abrupt transition. You may also want to try and break up the tag team into every 2nd or 3rd record, so you only have to worry about a few tracks to mix out of the trance with. Re: [313] UR quitted?
Funny that you should say that. My speculative mind was working overtime about this recently. I was having a mind adultering experience when I thought that Rolando's set was far removed from representing Detroit and more in a Euro vibe when I saw him @ X. Probably just a passing thought in the night?? Also 4t it odd him not appearing at Glasgow for UR's appearance given he has ties in Edinburgh. Bo Selecta! While I can stir tings up good and proper I'd just like to see if anyone else was a little deflated with the Millennium 2 Millennium release? I love UR but I thought this record wasn't in the same category as the World2World and Galaxy2Galaxy recs. Too much of a good thing maybe. Re: [313] i have to dj and i'm scared.
Well, these are certainly great suggestions, but let me chime in for a sec... I actually do this, tagging trance and techno, allot with my partner, Ian Mariano. We perform as Signal. He plays trance (with some tech influence) and I play Tech (with some house influence). The whole purpose of us joining is that we were sick of the genre wars. Anyways, I have found that the really rhythmic, even repetitive techno goes very very well with PVD and crap. all the Euro guys mix very smoothly out of any Hooj Choon record, and once you go from trance, to maybe some swedish stuff, you can easily go detroit. Than the trance guy can easily go from detroit to trance. And keep in mind, despite us being a group, I could tell you what records he owns, we do that on purpose to add a more free flowing element to it all. Anyways, my suggestion if your stuck is go either swedish (or similar, repetitious drums is the key) or tribal. From their, do your thing. And the trance guy shouldn't complain one bit because those records are set up to mix fairly easily. If your wondering how the crowd reacts to such broad sweeps, well, lets just say its very positive... good luck!! darw_n repetition : repeat : shift... http://www.sphereproductions.com http://www.mannequinodd.com - Original Message - From: Phonopsia [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Dave Clark [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2001 11:56 PM Subject: Re: [313] i have to dj and i'm scared. - Original Message - From: Dave Clark [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2001 11:24 PM Subject: Re: [313] i have to dj and i'm scared. Moby postscript
From the new issue of Jockey Slut (Apr 2001 issue, Avalanches cover): MOBY - REPLY: HIS LIFE AND TIMES Martin James (Independent Music Press, £9.99) Martin James seems to knock a biography out every month, which is probably why this retrospectiveof Moby's career has such a 'rushed' feel. There is, of course, another reason for the less than scintillating nature of 'Replay' - the subject matter. While Moby is articulate, vocal about issues that concern him and a bag of contradictions, his complaints to the Prodigy about their weed smoking while supporting them on tour is about as rock'n'roll as this gets. Matters are made worse by Moby's continual whingeing. By the final chapter you just want to bin your copy of 'Play'. Don't read this, just listen to the music. RE: [313] cari lekebusch / joel mull in seattle?
I've heard Lekebusch live once and I've found his set rather boring. 2 hours of smoothly mixed percussive hard minimal (drumcode style) without much tricks stuff. I would actually prefer him to play more intelligent funky stuff :) I like hard minimal in general but it has to be more variety in style and not just drum sounds for 2 hours (when I've heard gaetek he was the same way). Mills definitely has much more variety in his sets and his mixing style is also much better. can't get no decent techno .... but i try
from my own point of view, i just seem to be buying old(er) techno records, circa '90 to '97. there seems to be so many classic tunes from this period (most of which i failed to buy when they first came out - poor student days), but nowadays the releases that must be bought, for me, are few and far between. all my favourite tunes were made in the mid to early '90s. few producers, it seems, are making exciting deep dance-floor techno now. the last brilliant record that i bought was stefan robbers release on ifach, but its sound harks back to days of eevolute. kanzleramt seem to be making quality music these days, as are technasia, but can any of you extremely knowledgable people recommend any other labels that i might be missing out on (besides your established big names like tresor, planet e, kompakt)? i love the stuff on raygun (especially the fabrice lig and frame six releases), if that's a clue to my techno tastes (not a massive fan of the hard minimal side). hope people can point me in the right direction. cheers, aidan _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.

Can you tell me how one can know what artists comes to town and when. Usually, i never look at the adverts and fliers that are at the record stores. maybe that is my big mistake. thanks steve __ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! It's fun, and with a MIDI, you can play a whole friggin' drum machine symphony if you so desire!! As far as synching the machines and tables together, there are plenty of devices out there that takes a BPM read off your mixer and converts it to MIDI to your machines. Its not fool proof though. Sex in Zero Gravity is dope! Yeah, drop that one on 'em. Prayer Stick might be nice too depending on where it fits into the set.
Re: [313] train station
I beleive that they actually did have a couple parties in there like 6 or 7 years ago. I never made it down there. I thought they were crazy as hell. But I remember ppl telling me about how they had been to parties in there. The name of the crew that threw them in there was called Ozone or Aura. I believe it was the first one. Re: [313] Drummachine+turntables
I've been working my Roland R8mk II into my DJ set. It's getting easier to do, but there's a lot of fine tuning involved with the tempo and pitch control. I've got to do it by ear, no BPM counters or MIDI out on my mixer or anything like that. Matter of fact, I'd probably prefer not to have it. Extra stuff takes the fun out of it. darw_n [EMAIL PROTECTED] on 03/29/2001 09:58:49 AM To: Janne Puurunen [EMAIL PROTECTED], 313 313@hyperreal.org cc: Subject: Re: [313] Drummachine+turntables It's fun, and with a MIDI, you can play a whole friggin' drum machine symphony if you so desire!! Re:[313] can't get no decent techno .... but i try
That's what's great about DJing. Although all DJs have the same access to the same records - each DJ buys records and sounds that please them and in turn they use those records in a DJ set to keep everyone dancing and having a great time. There are great records available new and old. What you do with them as a DJ is what makes the difference. djr From: stuffed bird [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re:[313] can't get no decent techno but i try Date: 29 Mar 2001 14:54:55 - I agree, techno lost me to deep house around the same time, but I still buy a lot of techno records. I think deep house is pretty sweet. Hell, I even tried my hand at it once upon a time (http://www.mp3.com/subject28), with uhhh... mixed results. I think there are as many quality techno records coming out as there were in those days, it's just the number of crappy looped banging stuff that has multiplied enormously, and is sadly being bought by loads of young dj's who just want to get the girls and get paid like a superstar. Deep house has always been a little less popular and has IMO maintained more integrity (although the French disco house sound is a serious attempt at destroying that integrity).

Acid Eiffel was written by Garnier and Shazz (who made a really nice album for Distance). Ludovic Navare made a whole bunch of records for FNAC (I can't recall anything from him on F-comm) including the beautifull 'how do you pleed'. navarre did 2 DS [deepside] records on f-comm - more jacking chicago style than other stuff While we're at it, let's not forget Hexagone, on Djax. [i was told to ask here, so i am.] i need some web space. i do a fm radio show where i play techno, have other djs come in, stuff like that. i record all of my shows and need someplace to stick the audio. id like to migrate my whole web site to a new site/domain. bascially i need someplace with decent bandwidth (not a lot), stable, reliable, and which doesnt undergo changes often to stick my audio online. i currently cannot put it on the schools computers because we have REALLY crappy bandwidth, and space constraints. (and i REFUSE to use free services like yahoo.com, and unfortunately mp3.com is my only alternative.) are there any IT professionals out there who have someplace i can stick my audio? i have a few interviews i want to put online, and my show archives. i have them in streaming audio format, so they dont take up a whole bunch of space. i would like to develop my text only lynx true headz site into something more indepth, but i havent yet because of this whole need a place to put it problem. if you can help me out, shoot me a mail. i will gladly take care of you in one way or another, i promise. thank you for your time and support, Bob http://kwur.wustl.edu/technoradio [check out TR4, the all detroit show playlist]
Re: [313] fat new techno!!!! - apology and explanation
geez, now everyone on the list thinks i'm a b*tch (if they didn't already) my apologies to all the snobs on the list ;) snobs vs. heads: personally, i think a lot of what comes through the store is sh*t, but i try not to judge other peoples' tastes. trance, hardhouse, nrg, etc. are some peoples' 'things' and that's ok. everyone is entitled to their own opinion. by being a snob, i mean that some people are so immersed in the music that 'everyday' house and techno seem very simple, boring, and cheesy. so the 'snobs' become very picky about their music. i guess i'm using the word snob instead of head, but i know a lot of heads that like their music but don't have to put down other people's music as cheesy and rudimentary. i was using the word snob because i wanted to let timothy know that there are people on the list that turn their nose up at things like obvious buildups, etc. hope i didn't offend anyone. for the record: there's nothing wrong with being a techno snob...or a newbie :) direct flames to: ani (house snob) record time [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.recordtime.com ph 810.775.1550 fax 810.775.5830 icq# 33610265 want to be on the record time mailing list? send an email message from the address you want to subscribe with subscribe in the subject - Original Message - From: TIMOTHY JOHNSON [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@HYPERREAL.ORG Sent: Thursday, March 29, 2001 11:47 AM Subject: Re: [313] fat new techno Duely noted, Ani, thanks for your politeness. (and i REFUSE to use free services like yahoo.com, and unfortunately mp3.com is my only alternative.) are there any IT professionals out there who have someplace i can stick my audio? i have a few interviews i want to put online, and my show archives. i have them in streaming audio format, so they dont take up a whole bunch of space. i would like to develop my text only lynx true headz site into something more indepth, but i havent yet because of this whole need a place to put it problem. if you can help me out, shoot me a mail. i will gladly take care of you in one way or another, i promise. thank you for your time and support, Bob http://kwur.wustl.edu/technoradio [check out TR4, the all detroit show playlist] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

For 313 published freelance writers...help
To all freelance writers (all others can disregard this message) Hey, I need a bit of help. I recently left the website I was writing for, and had a regular column in, because the so-called director never told me about, nor gave me, CDs and records that came into the website's office (his apartment actually). Well, he had them since October or 2000 and I just got them last week! Anyway, i quit and I'm now a free agent for the first time. As liberating for me as this is, I'm now in the position of what do I do now to get my work published. So, I'm asking you published writers out there... how do I approach print magazines (preferably) and other websites as a new freelance writer? email me privately please MEK _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Re:[313] can't get no decent techno .... but i try
I'm at the point now where I just wander around the record store going through bins, if I like it...it's techno...wow...that's really funky, nice deep bassline...it's techno. cause I mean, duh, everything that sucks is not techno. everything that is good is techno...but I'm sure people who prefer house buy techno records saying, hey that's some good house...yeah... :) josh23 --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I think deep house is pretty sweet. __ Do You Yahoo!? Re: [313] DEMF mills?
I actually asked him why he doesn't come to Detroit any more when I talked to him at Record Time. He sort of avoided the question and mentioned that he is actually banned from performing in Ann Arbor. He seemed really quiet about it so I didn't try and squeeze an answer out. Perhaps it is none of my business. -Rachael On Thu, 29 Mar 2001, Erin Swenson-Healey wrote: No Jeff Mills? Re: [313] DEMF schedule
A wicked line up! I gotta say I was getting a bit worried with all this talk of Fatboy Slim. I know Carl's on the case, but I've seen too many good things lose thier edge when big corporate money gets involved. I'm especially happy to see some more jazz influenced acts like Kirk Degorgio and Jazzanova there, plus some big names like Derrick and James Pennington. Just so you guys know It's not that T-Z isn't posted, and is going to be. It's that there don't seem to be any T-Z artists. Well, according to the little presspack from the conference at least. However, you can tack Twonz on to the end of that list. Josh Landau
