if it ain't broke, don't fix it.. (actually I believe derrick may said that about about the strings of life remix) tofugirl no kidding, his set hasn't changed in about 2 years. Is it just me or does Derrick May tend to play the same records all the time? I would just say buy his mix Cd and thats all you need. Re: [313] DEMF no Ritchie Hawtin!!
re: DEMF Jose - never fear! Norma Jean Bell is playing, this means almost assuredly KDJ will be there, either on piano or on turntables, or on something. At least, I would hope. I couldn't imagine Kenny not being at the DEMF, he's one of the few Detroit techno producers who really supports the city. Also, Rick Wilhite nice. Maybe Rick can repress KDJ 008 and 011 to celebrate. As for no Richie Hawtin, as far as I'm concerned, that's excellent. In fact, if Richie Hawtin were playing at the DEMF, points would be deducted. No Theo Parrish, though. Matt

I think there are still other names to be announced? I know of at least one name who was confident he was playing a couple of weeks ago - a live set - but who is yet to be announced. It could be a scheduling thing. I believe Richie Hawtin is playing Creamfields this year - maybe it was his choice not to play DEMF this year. Artists work in different ways and do things for different reasons. He may for example want to preserve the memory of the first? i'm not about to put words in his mouth, but i remember him saying that he REALLY likes to keep low-key in the place of his home. which is understandable. i think his words were something to the effect of not having people stop him in the street all the time after they saw him at a gig the past weekend... maybe not great for people in Chicago, but the man has to do things the way he feels most comfortable. I regret missing the Wizard gig at the start of the month, but in the end I'm glad I worked harder to get to that Plus 8 party on 10/28 because time and again I've seen Richie pour his heart into Detroit with no signs of letting up. Jeff played for the first time in 10 years in the city that started him? And that was supposed to excite us? I live in Chicago and I take it Jeff lives here, too, but I haven't seen him give us a thing, not even one performance, and there are plenty of places for him to play besides a dirtylittlerave. ;) I love his music and think he's a wonderful and innovative artist, but I just wish he played around here more often, both to see him and for the statement that performing in your home town or town-of-residence makes. Re: [313] DEMF madness
Right ... and how many more Detroit artists do you all think should be playing??? Between last year's line-up and the one developing for 2001, I'd say audiences have a very deep and diverse look into Detroit house, techno and electro. Norm Talley's playing ... Delano Smith!! Next we'll have someone requesting Mia Hesterley, Idol Making and KGB. :) The show's pretty balanced so far IMO. The only surprise to me, given Carl's involvement with DEMF and Planet E's release of the 2000 Black Good Good comp is the very low West London/Broken Beats quotient. Not that I'm complaining that Titonton's on the bill ... -d Hasn't it occurred to everybody that all the people not playing the actual DEMF will be playing at countless afterhours parties around town? Firstly, I must say that I'm envious of your situation because I simply can't keep up (financially) with the amount of good releases lately. Some label recommendations? How about Salo, BPitch Control, Raum Musik, Shitkatapult, Sender, Italic, 3b, Force Inc, Klang, Perlon, Playhouse, Plug Research, Background, Cytrax, Context, Tektite, Grow! ...etc.etc. and that's just the dance-floor oriented material, which represents maybe a quarter of what I listen to every week (there's also ambient stuff, house, jazzy breaks and others which could be called IDM but shouldn't). Trust me, there's plenty of quality, deep music out there, just think outside the square you live in. Re:[313] can't get no decent techno .... but i try
yeah sure, just because I don't like banging, looped techno I'm narrow-minded and I have an elitist attitude... and I hate to break the news, but some of us do just like the music for being music without thinking of getting chicks and FYI, my record boxes are crammed with records that sold over a million copies and I have not burned them because that turned them too commercial on the whole it's total lack of respect for opinions and mindless flaming that brings down the quality of this list filled with people who do love music just for the sake of it RD PS Please don't reply unless you can leave the flaming I think there are as many quality techno records coming out as there were in those days, yeah, when everyone and their mother only uses equipment that's 10 years old or older, the new sound thing runs thin. So much for being the only innovative sound eh? it's just the number of crappy looped banging stuff that has multiplied enormously, umm, its always been crappy looped banging stuff. That's what makes it techno. and is sadly being bought by loads of young dj's who just want to get the girls and get paid like a superstar. isn't getting laid and paid the whole reason for doing ANYTHING? Guys do certain things because it attracts certain chicks. Deep house has always been a little less popular and has IMO maintained more integrity ahh yes, the whole, if its sold more than a thousand copies the artist MUST have sold out and have no integrity, bit. Haven't heard THAT before. I think people take music too seriously for the wrong reasons. YES, its a powerful medium. YES, its an artform. But dude, RELAX. its just music. Its not going to cure cancer. Just because an artist writes a song that other people like besides him does NOT make it evil, nor does it make him a sellout, or commercialized. It means he wrote a track that other people like. Yeah, there's a commercial aspect to music, and there ARE people who sellout, but i think it happens less than y'all think. I mean, was andy warhol an evil commercial sellout cause he sold his paintings? I just think its time that this whole elitist attitude gives it up. Its Tired, and i think needs to be saved for acts like britney spears. so Sit back, RELAX, enjoy the hard beats. (although the French disco house sound is a serious attempt at destroying that integrity). yeah, those evil French Disco House Dj's are just trying to capitalize on that which is pure and unmoved right? Cause they're makin those Ten Dollah bills y'all! Oh well, just wanted to toss my 2 cents in. you're more than welcomed to your opinion, and if you want to keep yourself as closeminded as possible, that's great. don't let me stop you from reaching that level of Snobbery (seriously). My opinion: Deep house makes me want to go to bed. Ian Dury sampling house? Come on you trainspotting b****rds.
Hello all, To add to the other day's poser (which nobody's answered yet) about another track that samples Brainstorm's Hot For You other than MK's Feel The Fire, I've got this little one: Ian Dury's Spasticus Autisticus has an instrumental break that has also been sampled in the house world. And again, it's on my shelves somewhere, it isn't L'il Louis, though it could almost be, and it is most likely a house track from around 4 years ago and is probably damn obvious. 10 pence less shipping to the first person to give the correct answer, 5 pence for the Brainstorm brainteaser. I read this is an interview with him on line there was a link a while back posted but I cant find it in the 1000+ mailings I get a month. it was a pretty good interview he stated why he wouldn't play the demf and why he was having his own event. he also said it might be free! maybe someone could repost the addy of the interview? Re: [313] (313) DEMF live report
I'm jazzed, of course. The big surprise is how the lineup has opened globally this year. There are still some Detroit performers who haven't been picked, but I'm very happy to see Random Noise Generation, K. Hand, and of course Mr. Terrence Parker on this year's list, among others. Agreed. Terrence seemed a little bit down when I talked to him last year saying (if i remember correctly) that he was unable to play because of a prior commitment. I wouldn't miss his set this year. Conspicuously absent, or scheduled for next year(?): Juan Atkins (how about a rain date, as Infiniti?) Rob Hood He and his wife both said that they wouldn't play the DEMF, after not being invited to the _first_ historic one. Cheers! Dennis Jeff Mills The Martian dopplereffekt Stuart Walker Dan Curtin Monochrome Carl Craig/Innerzone George Clinton Kraftwerk and of course, AO (where's his non-DEMF appearance supposed to be?) And as far as opening up globally, I'd like to think that non detroit performers might present a bit of a tribute to the Detroit sounds that inspired them or their own material as embraced by Detroit. Hearing Gerald drop a live version of Blow your House Down last year was gold. -- There4IM - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
Re: [313] List maintenance (was Re: [313] real story for...)
There's an introduction at http://www.hyperreal.org/music/lists/313/. It's sent to new subscribers and is worth reading or rereading (ahem). And it lists another maintenance address--which doesn't seem to be working either at the moment. On to other topics: anyone want to tell me about the new batch of Black Nation releases? By the way, I'm not sure which address(es) to use when contacting the list maintenance, [EMAIL PROTECTED] doesn't seem to be active. Also, is there a kind of FAQ which is nowadays mailed to the new subscribers? We sure could use one... _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

RE: [313] can't get no decent techno/electro .... but i try
New? I think that while there has been an increase in 80s influenced music over the last year or so, the electro wave isn't new at all. There have been consistant releases of electro music for at least four or five years. The labels are a bit more obscure and smaller in scale than say, Tommy Boy or even Tresor, thus they have fallen below the radar of most people. Why the increased interest in 80s influenced music I'm not sure...anyone care to offer their hypothesis? MEK PS Weird thing is, just when the increase of 80s influenced music and electro seems to be at a high point in the press, my local record shop doesn't have a decent electro record to speak of. Figures. From: Gwendal Cobert [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: [313] can't get no decent techno but i try Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2001 10:08:07 +0200 What about this new electro wave ? Adult, Dopplereffekt etc ? without falling in the by the way, who's behind Drexciya? FAQ-filler, there are tons of brilliant records being released in this vein these days ? Gwendal from my own point of view, i just seem to be buying old(er) techno records, circa '90 to '97. there seems to be so many classic tunes from this period (most of which i failed to buy when they first came out - poor student days), but nowadays the releases that must be bought, for me, are few and far between. all my favourite tunes were made in the mid to early '90s. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Oof. Just read the lineup. Anyone else out there feel that overall it's a little hurtin'? Who *are* some of these folks? And why DiGiorgio and Jazzanova 2x on the same day? Couldn't they find anyone else to fill those slots? Sorry. Rainy and damp in NYC and in a bitchy mood. As of about a week ago, Aux 88 is no more. They did their last performance at the Majectus Theater. Although the artists are still going to work on separarte projects...just not as Aux 88. One of the emembers told me they are going to be doing something with UR. -Rachael On Fri, 30 Mar 2001, Dharma Fowler wrote: isn't aux 88 just the one guy now? from what i remember the last album was crap. correct me if i'm wrong. -Dharma _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Moby is a Soul Sampler
Moby is a righteously smart dude. He's been utilizing OP talent and soul and black artist's music and skills for some time now. He's ALWAYS wanted to be a rock star whether he was shmoozing our scene/family or not. He's another guy who has and continues to climb the rockstar stairway to heaven on the backs of FAR more talented people of color. Whether you wish to partake in yet another black/white discussion of our music...the facts remain self-evident, Moby's BIGGEST HIT is not only a sample of a black blues artist but is also a direct rip-off of a far more ingenius and truly unique white artist who has taken the influence of black dance music artists and married that devotion to his own passion thereby creating something unique...the artist is St. Germain and the track in question is Alabama Blues. Moby has been dropped and signed by at least three major labels that have steadfastly refused black artist's music over the past 10-15 years. I'm so glad he has made it...perhaps he'll just sit down now. An d as for Mute records, what black artists do they have?? By who? Moby's accountant? HMV retailers? A coterie of reviewers? come on mute is an awesome label is has to numerous of good bands to list. Can, wire, loop, plastikman, liabach, spk, cabert voiltare jist to name a few I can think of in a second! and I didnt even scratch the scratch on the surface. But I guess shifting a few more Moby units you know it's a big record company and they can carry big artist. not that I think mute thought go was going to be a mtv hit but I'm sure they are not mad about it. come on get off moby's back he's enjoying the stardom while it last and in the pop world that's not long! is there anything wrong with that or is it a case of indie rockers blues! that what happened to pavement when they became popular all the indie rocker snobs suddenly started to hate pavement. guess it's was there loss. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

It's like what everyone fears might happen to the music when it gets too above ground happens to the list. Soemthing like DEMF draws attention to 313 and suddenly we're overrun with idiotic posts which make IDM-l look tame. It gets to be time consuming setting up so many killfiles. jeff Anyone ever watch I.AM. Weasel on Cartoon Network? This sounds likes I.R.Baboon wrote it. -- jeff ?/~THINK OUTSIDE OF YOUR SITCOM~\!
