Subject: [313] minor techno

hey all,

i'm looking for that minor sound. those minimal tracks with eerie, sad,
minor strings giving them that unmistakenable feel.. i realized i just
don't get to hear many such tracks, and so i buy only what i manage
to find.. i gathered the collective knowledge of this list could help
me with this 'techno educational' project...

i'll list a few tracks so you could zoom in the style i'm after -

mike wade - requiem (b1 on 'first breath' ep / archetype)
jeff mills- if (all three 'if' on the if ep)
hidden rivals - early days (on the early days ep. / brave new world)
s.l. session - needle drama [sls' octave mix] (from 'remixes v1' /
cycle)
mistress barbara - my passion for you (a1 on '666 fvw' / primevil)
dave clarke - parameter (on 'directional force' / sonic groove)

these are all the tracks i could find in my box that follow this
style... obviously a sad testimonial.. but i intend to fix that.

recommendations will be highly appreciated...

thanks,

I have a 6 track magda mix on cd, no title. A friend burned it for me but I
don't believe it was titled when he bought it. Each of the six tracks is
comprised of multiple songs. There's a song on the third track at about 11
minutes, with a sample that repeats how's that?. Anyone know this track?
Or
even better, does anyone have a tracklisting for this mix? The third track
which includes the track that I am curious about begins with XZX by ADULT.
There are a lot of tracks on that mix with some pretty smooth percussion.

 Thanks,
 Andy

Mp3, vinyls, CD, etc

2001-04-11 Thread stuffed bird
Hi peepz,

I've been following the medium-discussion for a while now, there have been
solid arguments from all parties, but in the end I think it all comes down to
this: everybody has a preferred way of listening and playing his of her
favourite music. There ain't no right or wrong is this matter, there are just
different ways.

I myself prefer vinyl, because IMO no other medium has up till now reached the
sound of vinyl played on a good turntable with a good soundsystem. I have this
old Hitachi-amp hooked up to my mixer and that dusty, grey, hot as hell after
20 minutes at level 10 baby gives me a sound compared to which all digital
sound seems cold and too clean.
And no matter which technologies will come into being in the future I'm pretty
sure that vinyl will not cease to exist in my lifetime, especially not if I
read all the posts from people who prefer it as well on this list.

And for those people who do prefer MP3's and digital sound, just go ahead and
enjoy the music as much as I do. And if one day there will be a deejay playing
at the same venue as I, only using MP3's, well, if he plays good tracks I'll
have a party, and if he sucks I'll tell him so, and that will have to do with
the music and not the medium.

I think alot of the quality of the audio goes out the window after digital
quantizantion.

Something I don't understand here - so much music is made with samplers and
other digital devices, so presumably the sound coming out is quantised to
16-bit/44.1KHz by definition anyway - how can writing that quantised sound
onto vinyl suddenly give it a better dynamic range / quality ?

I suspect there's a bit of retro-fetishism going on here (not that there's
anything wrong with that - just that vinyl rules for reasons other than
sound quality).

Debates r.e. the quality of mp3 files are mainly irrelevant at present since
the primary point of mp3 files is swapping, i.e. you take what you can get
in terms of bitrate. Sure, higher bitrates sound better, but most extant
files are lower bitrate. Since it's a lossy compression system there will
always be a difference, and the louder the P.A. the more audible that
difference will be. Personally I'm not ready to make the switch yet, though
I do play with WAVs off a puter.

Kevin Krahel Track Review

Kevin Krahel Track review

These are tracks that I am reviewing for inclusion into a new mp3.com station
exclusively for [313] members. Instead of just cramming all the tracks up
there, I decided to review them and provide accurate info about each one.
Unfortunately, this leads to a station full of tracks that I enjoy (mostly
Detroit), but hey. I'm doing the station!:)

I didn't have time to listen to them all yet, so I just checked the Detroit
tracks this time...

Changeling...

Ok, where can I buy this track on vinyl. This Kevin Krahel is someone who
obviously is very familiar with Detroit Style electronic music. I can feel
Carl Craig and Derrick May influence all over this track. The lead synth slow
down in the middle is sweet!

Moody

Starts off with off-tempo drums, tricking the listener into thinking the Kev
doesn't know what he's doing. That's my style and I'm moody as well! Uh oh,
here comes the bass-line. Nice, heavy, and beautifully offset by a nice lead
stab.
No way! Old school stuff kickin' in here! This track is moody. I'm talkin'
old school snare/kick break down with old school stab-line and record scratch
included. Don't really care for the linearly, upword-sloping, stab pattern,
but hang on here comes a break down. I'll get back to you in a second...

Nice change up brother. This song takes an uppity track and transforms
it into lo profile, ufo landing-type of groove. Very nice addition to the
station.

Internal

O.k. I've heard this before. I think I've seen this track on the charts. Once
again a nice display of Detroit style knowledge all the way from Texas. I'd
like to get this track on vinyl. It would be a nice transition track. Hey
cool vox. I like when the heavy beat kicks in 3/4 a way thru the song. This
guy is good with the keys...

In My Hair

This one has some funk to it. Nice, funky, bass-guitar bassline is always a
good way to start off a track, IMHO. It is nicely offset by soft triangle
noises. This track is very full.

Overall, Changeling is my fav. Or maybe Moody is my fav. Eh, they are
both great tracks. Check them out if you haven't already...

vinyl - digital

2001-04-11 Thread Jason Hill

Actually, I was at a few Saturday Morning Physics lectures a
few years ago at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. For three
weeks in a row, the physics of music was discussed. A lot of
material was covered and all of it was extremely interesting ... and
all easilly understandable for anyone who knows the slightest
about music.

Anyways, believe it or not, the third and final lecture was
devoted to the vinyl - vs - digital argument. Everything technical
was covered, but basically thrown out towards the end of the
lecture. I can't remember the name of the guy that gave these
lectures, but he has been studying the subject consistently for
years and has a phd in physics. Basically, what it all came down
to in the end, is that vinyl sounds better, because it has a sense of
dimension that no digital recording can have.
Most people understand how a record player works, basically.
The same people have no clue how a CD player or MP3 player
works. They know, I push this button and this happens. What
they don't know is how 0100101010101 turns in to a groove. A
good question is whether or not this affects a person's feelings for
the music. It appears that it does. Most people are willing to say
that a vinyl recording has a sense of depth that a digital one does
not. Why?
This physics guy proposed that, even when a recording is
digitally mastered and then put on vinyl, it will sound better than
the straight digital recording ... for a few reasons. The main reason
is that vinyl isn't perfect. You have factors such as dust, needle
hiss, small wobbles, and such.
Think about going to a concert or something. Your senses take
in a lot more than just the music. You hear the crowd, people
talking, the air conditioning system in the building, cough drop
wrappers ... whatever. These variables aren't consistent, and
neither are the impurities in a vinyl recording. A good digital
recording is usually an attempt to remove anything besides the
music.
This guy actually proposed that digital music players such as
CD players and such could put this depth back in to the music.
He suggested that digital companies start putting a dial on their
machines that says warmth and injects needle hiss when turned.

I definitely like vinyl a lot more than digital. But, this is
overshadowed by the fact that I'm a student and vinyl in Sweden in
pretty expensive. I have three KMS records, and one from Sean
Deason. I have a ton of CD's. You just have to work with what is
available and have fun with it. Believe it or not, shifting through all
the junk on free music mp3 sites can turn up some good stuff. I've
found a few tracks on mp3.com and some house sites that I'm
absolutely in love with right now. It can be hard to find though.
Getting more vinyl is definitely something I look forward to..

I always thought the same as well, but last year when we had the first
Ground Zero and TechnoTourist releases cut, I became a convert (and I
think Hans and KJ too). We had the tracks on DAT, listened to them in
the cutting studio to determine the final EQ adjustments and they
sounded good. Then they were cut and we briefly listened back to the
lacquer and our collective jaws dropped in disbelief at how much better,
deeper, warmer and groovier the tracks sounded. NSC's magic worked.

Not much of an explanation, I admit, but still.

I believe its something to do with the opacity of the plastic
changing at different temperatures, so at lower temps it is
'more transparent', something to do with the refractive index
of the plastic. Therefore there is less distortion of the
laser passing through the plastic at lower temps,
But I could be wrong, no one seems to agree on this :)

exactly - even the tracks made with all analgue synths and drum machines
are generally mastered to DAT, which is if i remember right 16 bit 44khz,
same as CD.

then again, maybe those people who make vinyl masters know some sort of
magic that un-quantizes your digital recording? yeah, that must be it.

KHz range ? After all, pickups are mechanical devices, so they should have
quite low resonant frequencies.

i would not bet that M is on chain reaction, its not

It's kind of difficult to tell from the vinyl (not very much info is
given),
but I have seen the M-series variously described as being on 'M' records,
'Maurizio' records and as being no label releases. The Maurizio CD that
contains most of the M-series is often listed as being part of the Chain

.. which reminds me, *sort of* on topic, and *sort of* a plug, kinda... for
those interested in new [digital] DJing technology and in the London UK
area.

As I've mentioned before, I'm currently working [privately] on an
experimental DJ software project called hummingbird. Runs on a Wintel PC,
controlled through a fostex midi controller, gives you 8 channels of wav
audio, beatmatched offline, with much enhanced control over the music.
Having 8 decks at your disposal (and being able to switch tracks in seconds)
lets you play much more musically - the process is like live remixing as
much as DJing.

I'll playing an IDM/electro/eclectic set with the pre-alpha version in
London on Friday April 20th, at a club called the Rhythm Factory. I'd very
much like to meet and talk to others involved with or interested in
new/digital DJ/performance tech, so if you're in the area, pop me a mail and
I'll try and get you on the guest list - I think it's a fiver to get in
otherwise

Back in 1991-1992 a rumor floated around that if you colored the edge of
your cd's with a green marker, they would sound better. Car audio nuts were
buying into it until someone proved it false. When I worked at Jam Sounds
during those years, lots of people tried it and said to me ... the music
sounds the same, what's the big deal?

This is similar.

The data on a CD is still going to be the same, cold or warm. It'll sound
no different.

Basically, you put a cd in the freezer for 48 hours, then slowly warm it

Obviously the data on the CD will be the same but thats a
pretty abstract statement!!
Its the retrieval of data from the CD where the error rate
comes into play and the CD player will start interpolating or
oversampling to compensate. It seems pretty clear that if the
optical properties of the plastic change with temperature
that this could radically change the way the laser reads the
CD and alter the error rate.
The sound produced from the same CD in various players is not
solely defined by the D/A process.

Something to do with a Voo Doo Doll? Think about it folks, this isn't a
record, you can't change what's on the CD or how it's read, all you can do
is obstruct it, or clear an obstruction, and a CD player with good

NO!! You get me all wrong! I still find vinyl hugely superiour to CD, I'm
just saying that the process can improve the sounds of CD. For me, it makes
the cd listenerable to, whereas before it was just really weak and
fustrating.

The tests were done on a my Dad's Linn system. The Linn LP12 still sounds
much better than the CD (no, it's not a CD12), it's just that he listens to
Classical music and struggles to get new classical records.

Luckly with Dance music, DJ cluture also keeps audiophiles like myself happy
by keeping vinyl going strong. Now if only they didn't put their hands of
the playing surfaces of the records in the shops.. ;-)

Cheers,
Paul.

This may be true, BUT we're still dealing with a 44.1KHz, 16 bit CD, it
can
only sound so good. 96KHz/24bit sounds significantly better, and is the
closest we have to analog sound, but there is still no comparison to vinyl
on a VPI Aries (or better) turntable.

Well, unless you have an utterly old/crappy player I doubt that there's a
significant difference with their effectiveness in error-correction and
thus outputting a better sound. After all, there are easier ways to
improve the quality of the sound at home, acoustics and cabling
for example.

well, i'd think the actual cutting of the groove based on all the digital

a high-quality d/a converter couldn't approximate the feeling. Also,
there's all kinds of physics about the needle tracking the groove (the way
stereo information is encoded in the groove, for example) that might have
to be dsp-ified to get a noticeable effect Not that it'll ever be the

right on, this is the direction of thought that gets to what is valuable
about vinyl even if technically it seems to lose to digital. there's a
physical element inherent in the process of getting a record made that
 works
at many levels; it is less an automatic process, you may have to master
 one
place, press another, get sleeves done another, artwork another and this
takes work, extra effort and extra involvement. vinyl has an interesting
texture [cd's boring, smooth flat industrial perfection, boring and no

 its
no competition, analog technology is direct, physical, no
coding..surface
noise is warm and adds [literally] to the music rather than

I love his stuff, really kept the Rob Hood sound alive in his occassional

Just a pretender though as there is only one Hood.

Having both heard Amil from Technasia Dj and been in contact with him ever
since Force was released. All I can say is, like their music his
selection
 and
Dj style are impeccable. Props to Green Galactic for having Amil throw
down
at their intimate event in Miami. These two guys (Amil Charles) are all
 about quality and not
just pumping out record after record. Other labels they run are Star
Tracks
 and Sino.
I believe he said Mr. John Tejada was one of the forthcoming releases on
 Sino.
With all this in mind I would put them at the top of your list of people
to
 go see
and/or book for a gig.(if anyone needs their booking contact I can forward
 that on)

While on the subject of good labels and producers I wonder how many people
on this list were feeling Octave One Black Water. I know I played it to
 death in both
house and techno sets. It also was the one track that really stood out the
 last time
I heard Jeff Mills play here in Toronto.

Finally fresh 12 releases from the Round Table family
the new Format 006 and Chair 011 for all
 underground heads around the world.

It inspired me too. I just tried cutting up some records with my
 pocketknife,...

   you did WHAT?!

leaving them by a radiator's one thing, but knifing your records will
 definetely ruin the sound quality...

I remember spending an evening watching a friend getting to work on some old
45s with a cigarette lighter and some razor blades.he didn't mark the
music but he cut notches in the run-out groove and recorded his own beats
and clicks and zaps, then mixed them up.also he wasn't averse to
using rolls of sellotape and cups of tea on the decks in other creative
ways..far too destructive for me, interesting sounds though.

i've heard that rubbing toothpaste on the data side of of a scratched cd
will take out many of the skips.

you can resurrect those dead cd with tooth paste.
but try a paste wax first and polish the cd with a soft cloth wax.
try that maybe 3 times before using TP
with TP use a dab and a soft cloth find the deep scratch which will be
apparent after waxing.
use a circular motion on the deep scratch with a moderate pressure
rinse with h2o and rewax .
(you can also use a fine jewelers polish and a dremal.
but that's going a little over board)

usually wax will make the cd able be ripped and burned.

*I have never use any of the above methods on a cdr*

While we're on the subject, does anyone have any idea why freezing cd's
improves them? I've heard about this technique and it does wonders, but
I
 just don't understand why!

Basically, you put a cd in the freezer for 48 hours, then slowly warm it
up
by putting it in the bottom of the fridge and then the top, for
something

like 12 hours. It makes such a huge improvement to the sound, try it.
But
 why?

Most people understand how a record player works, basically.
The same people have no clue how a CD player or MP3 player
works. They know, I push this button and this happens. What
they don't know is how 0100101010101 turns in to a groove. A

Assuming you don't mean ones you've microwaved or baked, it would prolly have to
do with the quality of the laser in it. CDRs tend not to be as reflective (at

I think Brinkmann is a genius, but is his x100 project somewhat a conceptual
rip of X102 Rings of Saturn?

And this connection, this border, was very important for me in 'x100.'
The visual problem, the rings, the spirals ... I want to have a very
simple, geometrical form on the surface of the record. How is it possible to
program the sounds to create this? So the music was following the visual
imperative.

 Okay folks,

I've finally gotten all the technical glitches fixed(hopefully, so
bear with me) and you can now see the submissions for the 313 list t-shirt
as well as vote for your favorite design.

The link following is where the designs are located. To vote send a
message to the address on the bottom of the web page and enter the letter of
your favorite design in the SUBJECT line. No need to type a message...the
subject will do fine. It's up to you to narrow it down and vote only for you
favorite. I will dispense with any florida jokes at this point.

If anyone should encounter any problems with the site let me know
and I'll do my best to address those asap. I will be 'closing the poles' so
to speak at midnight est. on Saturday. So you've got four days to vote. As
always, any questions...just reply and I will try to help.

 here's the link: http://www.313shirt.50megs.com

 thanks everyone,

TShirt site

2001-04-11 Thread d . pinter
I was afraid this might happen to someonethe images have been glitching out
on my computer here at the office and at home. I have tried to contact the host
and figure out what the problem is but as usual I'm getting bounced back emails
from them. Needless to say I am still trying. I did a quick survey of the site
before I released it to the list and it worked for everyone else so I figured
it was some sort of cookie issue with my machine. For any of you that can't see
the previews...the images are there, you just need to check each box. Sorry for
the temporary difficulty, I'm still working on fixing it.

I'll keep you guys updated...

dave

Point taken. As I mentioned in the original message I was unclear about the
connection between Chain Reaction and the various Ernestus / Von Oswald
projects due to the large amount of apparently incorrect information
available. My thanks to everyone that has corrected me.

But if we're going to be really nitpicky about this, isn't Domina M3 (having
been preceded by Ploy and Lyot and followed by M4)? Also, wasn't it a 1993
release?

M1 a.k.a Domina was released in 1994, CR01 was released in 95. Kinda hard
for the birth of the parent to happen after the child.

silly tshirt slogans

2001-04-11 Thread diana potts
by the convincing of my trusty friend Kyle Dupuy..here
are some tshirt slogans I shot him while being silly
sarcastic:

313: where its proven you don't sh*t about
music...just when you thought you did

313: on topic posts wanted (ironic)

313, where the weak are flamed and the
strong are eaten for breakfast

313: yeah...that's right..we're the ones who buy all
the limited white labels on colored vinyl that play
backwards

313: techno tourists only need apply

313: we've all changed our names to richie may mills
atkins...so go away

313:you said WHAT about Detroit!?! *full neck
rotate*

ok...enough of my silly brain dribble...just thought
it make some people smile.
something to think about when voting: make sure it
best represents the list and detroit.

cheers ;) ;) ;)

Brinkmann\Morningstar

2001-04-11 Thread Matt MacQueen
This is a bit of an old thread but I never got around to responding at the
time. I recommend that people check out Philip's interview with TB at:
 www.urbansounds.com/us_current/thumbnail/brinkmann_1.html (It inspired me).

TB's Soul Center releases certainly reveal a transformational sampling
 ethic...

nice words, cheers. For those who can't stand comparisons of
music and literature, delete this post now.

Personally, I can't get enough of soulcenter I and II. I've
always thought of Brinkmann as the William Faulkner of dance
music on vol.2. The weird dark historic edge, reminds me of the
crazy stuff in _Light in August_ and _As I Lay Dying_. Also the
photography on front and back of Soulcenter II is just brilliant,
evokes some dark and intense inner emotions.

Also how about that track, is it called FUNK SHACK or
something?? I think it's the last track on Soulcenter vol.1,
where a creaky door opens at the beginning of the track, and then
slams shut at the end. Like you were let into some hot, house
party in some weirdo backwoods southern town, where people just
come to
escape the flashy, glitzy nauseating clubland and into this
weirder, deeper and darker smokey space, but it's still pure
funk. Also I love the parallels you draw with the whole David
Lynch movies, I totally see it, and had actually thought that
myself before.

peace

2001-04-11 Thread M. Todd Smith
Just checked with www.circonium.de I was going by Sonic Grooves database (I
was in a hurry and I usually have it open at work in the record store).

Ploy was M1 and Lyot M2, apparently however they were released in '92. The
first CR record by Scion (emerge) was released in '95.

As always never trust Sonic Groove for anything. :)
