Hi :)
Mine's a touch different. Maybe she realized we might compare? Sounds
like
a Falstaff plot! Here's my letter and the reply. BTW, I got a response
from

John Jelinek (Ford Mo. Co.) and Brian McCollum from one of the papers
(can't recall which) asking permission to publish it.

Your letter was much nicer than mine, I think that's why I got the
abbreviated version ;) I also got a response from John Jelinek, he told me
that he has a car and a message that appeals to the festival audience and
that I should visit some of the Focus-themed activities they have
planned.

Can you say in one ear and out the other?

John

[313] this weekend

2001-05-23 Thread Geoffrey Richards

hey all,
  a couple a things,
1st, i noticed that united has e-fares for travel between sat and tues from
chicago to detroit for $60--might be relevant to chi-town 313 listmembers.

2nd, i've been burning cds, many cds (well, 33 to be precise) of my music.
kind of a 'best of' (imo) of my work over the last ~3 years. i call it at
ease, disease. but i was gonna say, if there is anyone who is interested
in having a copy, they are demos; i intend to give most of them away in
detroit this weekend. if you might want one, we could perhaps arrange to
meet, and i could give you one. Maybe i can arrange to set the cds at one
of the tables outside/in/around the festival, and you can pick one up if you
want. or not maybe email if you are interested. we will work somethiong
out.

well, i hope to meet some of the people from this list this weekend. i hope
the rain ceases or at least slows. oh well, best wishes,

like that. And of course my jaw hit the floor cause that was pretty much
the least likely thing for me to see... All I remember from it now was
Derrick May showing the interviewer some garage ind detroit that used to
be
a theater and saying he liked the building. From what I saw, there was a

stoned and paranoid) going record shopping at Submerge.
Does any one know anything about this documentary?

[313] Support for Carl from afarr

2001-05-23 Thread Evan Rice
I would just like to express my concern over the recent events surrounding
the firing of the man behind the DEMF. You should know that the music that
Detroit has provided over the last 2 decades is appreciated all around the
globe (even down here at the southern tip of Africa), and the DEMF
represents an opportunity for people like myself, who don't get a chance to
see many of our favourite artists often or at all in our own country, to
celebrate the techno movement in the place where it all began.

The movement itself has been a unifying and entirely positive force in a
world where even getting down and shaking ass are segregated activities. To
create a rift in this unified movement and cause such negative publicity 2
weeks before an event of this magnitude is ridiculous to say the least. With
the scene finally getting worldwide exposure and the artists involved
finally starting to get the deserved recognition for their brilliant work,
it is pitiful that this had to happen!

I had already begun making plans to get to next year's fest before this
story broke, but now I fear that the event may have lost its soul. I wonder
how the festival will move forward without the vision of its founder and
creative director, and more to the point, I wonder how many of the great
artists who have graced the festival's line-up over the last 2 years would
have taken part had it not been for the considerable influence and respect
that Carl Craig commands.

I don't profess to have all the facts but I still think that it's
disgraceful that this was done at the time and in the manner that it was
done, especially when the person concerned flattly denies the allegations
and nothing more is offered from the accuser!

Please be aware too that the people in the techno community will not rest
until the facts are known, reasons are given and justice is done. All you've
done is alienate the very people that made this all possible.

The words extremely silly are the nicest ones I can think of!

Disappointed that the machine has eaten the people again

Well...yes. They're working their tails of in preparation for the DEMF
onslaught. I was at the Roseville store yesterday and talked with Ani for a
few minutes and she was quite apologetic over what she considered not
having enough time to take care of people better lately (which, btw, I
don't agree with. She does fine by me). On top of rushing around to do all
of the backordering and line up some choice limited pressing vinyls for the
pre-DEMF garage sale this Thursday 5-9pm, there's the falderal of
logistics over the presence at the festival - and she had a family
emergency last weekend. To be concise, it's pretty busy around there.

[313] Fw: DAVE CLARKE: WORLD SERVICE LIVE MIX @ THE VIRGIN MEGASTORETOMORROW (6 - 8PM) THURS 24TH MAY

2001-05-23 Thread Tom Robbins
DAVE CLARKE: WORLD SERVICE LIVE MIX @ THE VIRGIN MEGASTORE TOMORROW (6 -
8PM) THURS 24TH MAYDAVE CLARKE: WORLD SERVICE

Dave shall be playing live at the Virgin Megastore on Tottenham Court Road,
Thursday 24th May from 6pm til 8pm as part of the promotional campaign for
the World Service Mix album.

To catch Dave cutting dicing and slicing records in his inimitable style
simply go to to the Virgin Megastore, entrance is free.

ARTIST: VARIOUS
MIXED COMPILED BY:DAVE CLARKE
TITLE:DAVE CLARKE: WORLD SERVICE
LABEL:REACT
FORMAT:DOUBLE MIX CD / UNMIXED VINYL
DISTRIBUTION:PINNACLE
RELEASE DATE:21 MAY 2001

Since Dave Clarke's debut album 'Archive 1' back in 1996 which contained one
of dance music's greatest electronic anthems in 'Red 2' the Clarkester has
gone on to become one of the world's most sought-after techno producers and
almost certainly the genre's biggest DJ, taking his uncompromising
underground style around the globe.

This Two CD pack is entirely representative of Dave¹s DJing style. CD1 is an
uncompromising club techno set featuring Stacey Pullen, Jeff Mills, Gaetano
Parisio, Joey Beltram, Suregon and culminating in the Horrorist¹s terrfiying
mix of Horrormone. Disc two is an eclectic electro mix, with tracks like the
ultra cool Idioteque by Radiohead (of which this is the first and only
compilation to get a licence from OKid A¹), Anthony Rother¹s Red Light
District, the warped punk electro of New York¹s Fischerspooner crew and the
Detroit sound of electronic funk represented by artists like Adult, Japanese
Telecom and Keith Tucker.

Both discs are live one-take mixes and demonstrate his hands-on fast,
aggressive mixing style. Records are phased to the point where the speakers
quake and cut sharp enough to slice kevlar. Some of the mixes are drawn out
and twisted into new forms whilst others are perfectly executed strokes of
the cross fader. In an age of computer mixed albums with some smiling idiot
jocks name and face attached Dave Clarke demonstrates the energy and on the
spot inventiveness of a technical dj. There are moments when, like a good
punk band, everything sounds like it will fall apart and yet is all held
together and fully resolved with no struggle or disruption to the dynamic
and energy of the mix.

Dave can be regularly seen DJing gigs in the world's best clubs and
regularly travels more air miles than you can shake a stick at. Regularly
playing at the UK's Bugged Out!, Belfast¹s Shine, Birmingham¹s Atomic Jam,
London¹s Headstart, Barcelona's Nitsa and Belgium's Fuse club Dave also
became the first underground techno dj to headline the dance tent at last
year¹s Glastonbury Festival. His DJ sets are also regularly broadcast live.

Re: [313] Looking for Gaetano Parisio's ART10 2x12

2001-05-23 Thread Dennis Donohue
I beleive that all of the ART series were made in 2000, and they just got
distributed slowly (?). If you look on the label of 9, it says 2000, so
that is at least 5-6 months ago, and I just saw it showing up a month or so
ago. I think the limits on the production have slowed the distribution.

Cheers!

[313] Internet Monopoly

2001-05-23 Thread Javier Drada
I have just recieved notice from DJ MG owner of the Underground Files that
he had to bring his internet webcast down. A couple of months ago he and I
recieved an email from BMI urging us to purchase a licence from them in
order to broadcast over the internet. About a month later we both got a
letter in the mail in regards to the same thing. After some research we
discovered that the licence would cost $250 per year. Both of us ignored the
letter, however this weekend MG recieved a certified notice from BMI, due to
this he pulled the broadcast prtion of his site down. Have done some follow
up research I found these two articles up at CNN:

http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/industry/04/13/webcasting.royalties.idg/index.html

http://www.cnn.com/2000/TECH/computing/12/20/music.fees.idg/index.html

MG has been in contact with the owners of other sites like Gotta Have House
and it seems we are all being hit with the same thing. What the f*^%k is
going on. I urge all of you to follow up on this info. The future of
Underground Radio is now under attack on the net. We couldn't get FCC
licensing for FM broadcast and now we are being urged to pay fees to
broadcast on the net. What is that? I can understand of you are making money
off of your webcast but most of us do this simply to promote quality
underground music.

Interesting angle here. You could try to counter that fees should be waived
due to the fact that you are not billing *them* standard fees for promotion
of the recordnings.

Then again, I have no direct experience with the law in this regard.

I hate it when sites run scripts so you can't grab images from them... I
was gonna snatch the K.Hand pic. Just a minor inconvienience, I still got
it anyways.

I love the K.Hand remix of Xirtam2, can anyone recommend some essential
titles by her?

My four votes would be:

A. Mad Mike explaining why Detroit techno is the way it is, what it is like
to be black in Detroit, and giving his perspective on what it is like to be
involved in this business.

B. Ed Luna going on at length about how great the Metroplex party was.

C. Anything that ever came out of Lance Mcgannon's mouth.

D. Anything that came out of Alan Oldham's mouth until he got a tresor
record and started thinking that the world owed him something.

Well, the festival actually runs Sat - Monday... I'm going Monday so I'm
curious as to whether it will still rain that day or not.

Secondly, it rained all weekend last year if I remember correctly that
didn't exactly hamper attendence, did it? :) And even if the rain did affect
attendance... the people that REALLY wanted to go would still be there in
spite of the rain.

Myself, I plan on a windbreaker and an umbrella...

Well, the festival actually runs Sat - Monday... I'm going Monday so I'm
curious as to whether it will still rain that day or not.

Secondly, it rained all weekend last year if I remember correctly that
didn't exactly hamper attendence, did it? :) And even if the rain did
affect
attendance... the people that REALLY wanted to go would still be there in
 spite of the rain.

Myself, I plan on a windbreaker and an umbrella...

Re: [313] Internet Monopoly

2001-05-23 Thread Mad Wax
the most ridiculous things about these rules are those having to do with
restrictions concerning the number of times you play a certain artist, or
label, or songs from an album.

I came across this issue several times, especially when I would do
artists/producer features, label retrospectives and the such.

Interesting angle here. You could try to counter that fees should be
waived
due to the fact that you are not billing *them* standard fees for
promotion
 of the recordnings.

Then again, I have no direct experience with the law in this regard.

jwz, one of the guys who wrote netscape, made a ton of money and is
opening
a club. on his site for the club, he outlines the hows and whys of all
the
licensing needed to legally operate an audio webcast:

 Interesting quote:
So, when you want to perform music, you pay all three of these
organizations. Rather than asking you which particular songs you're
playing, they just charge you a blanket rate for access to their entire
catalog; and then they make their own decision on how much of your money
to pass along to the various copyright holders. They do this
statistically, by looking at the popular music charts: rather than paying
the particular artists you've played, they just assume that almost all of
your money should go to the most popular stars.

And yes, you have to pay all three of them. Though they each represent
disjoint sets of artists, they each represent a very large number of
artists: so many that they just assume that you're playing something by
someone they represent. So if you're not paying them, then they will sue
you.

On a more musical note, has anyone heard the new 'DOS' EP by Funk D'Void on
SOMA? This is a very cool recent techno release with some Detroit
influence.. Haven't heard anyone play anything on it live yet, however..
:(

The tune The Loquita is essential for any techno set!!! I like Funk
D'Void's first lp Technoir a lot more. Good stuff!!
