BTW, I got a response from John Jelinek (Ford Mo. Co.) and Brian McCollum from one of the papers (can't recall which) asking permission to publish it. Your letter was much nicer than mine, I think that's why I got the abbreviated version ;) I also got a response from John Jelinek, he told me that he has a car and a message that appeals to the festival audience and that I should visit some of the Focus-themed activities they have planned. [313] this weekend
hey all, a couple a things, 1st, i noticed that united has e-fares for travel between sat and tues from chicago to detroit for $60--might be relevant to chi-town 313 listmembers. 2nd, i've been burning cds, many cds (well, 33 to be precise) of my music. kind of a 'best of' (imo) of my work over the last ~3 years. i call it at ease, disease. but i was gonna say, if there is anyone who is interested in having a copy, they are demos; i intend to give most of them away in detroit this weekend. if you might want one, we could perhaps arrange to meet, and i could give you one. Maybe i can arrange to set the cds at one of the tables outside/in/around the festival, and you can pick one up if you want. or not maybe email if you are interested. we will work somethiong out. well, i hope to meet some of the people from this list this weekend. i hope the rain ceases or at least slows. oh well, best wishes, rorschach i _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[313] Support for Carl from afarr
I would just like to express my concern over the recent events surrounding the firing of the man behind the DEMF. You should know that the music that Detroit has provided over the last 2 decades is appreciated all around the globe (even down here at the southern tip of Africa), and the DEMF represents an opportunity for people like myself, who don't get a chance to see many of our favourite artists often or at all in our own country, to celebrate the techno movement in the place where it all began. The movement itself has been a unifying and entirely positive force in a world where even getting down and shaking ass are segregated activities. To create a rift in this unified movement and cause such negative publicity 2 weeks before an event of this magnitude is ridiculous to say the least. With the scene finally getting worldwide exposure and the artists involved finally starting to get the deserved recognition for their brilliant work, it is pitiful that this had to happen! I had already begun making plans to get to next year's fest before this story broke, but now I fear that the event may have lost its soul. I wonder how the festival will move forward without the vision of its founder and creative director, and more to the point, I wonder how many of the great artists who have graced the festival's line-up over the last 2 years would have taken part had it not been for the considerable influence and respect that Carl Craig commands. I don't profess to have all the facts but I still think that it's disgraceful that this was done at the time and in the manner that it was done, especially when the person concerned flattly denies the allegations and nothing more is offered from the accuser! Please be aware too that the people in the techno community will not rest until the facts are known, reasons are given and justice is done. All you've done is alienate the very people that made this all possible. The words extremely silly are the nicest ones I can think of! Well...yes. They're working their tails of in preparation for the DEMF onslaught. I was at the Roseville store yesterday and talked with Ani for a few minutes and she was quite apologetic over what she considered not having enough time to take care of people better lately (which, btw, I don't agree with. She does fine by me). On top of rushing around to do all of the backordering and line up some choice limited pressing vinyls for the pre-DEMF garage sale this Thursday 5-9pm, there's the falderal of logistics over the presence at the festival - and she had a family emergency last weekend. To be concise, it's pretty busy around there. jeff At 02:37 PM 5/23/2001 +1000, Benn Glazier wrote: Anyone know what's up over there? I beleive that all of the ART series were made in 2000, and they just got distributed slowly (?). If you look on the label of 9, it says 2000, so that is at least 5-6 months ago, and I just saw it showing up a month or so ago. I think the limits on the production have slowed the distribution. [313] Internet Monopoly
I have just recieved notice from DJ MG owner of the Underground Files that he had to bring his internet webcast down. A couple of months ago he and I recieved an email from BMI urging us to purchase a licence from them in order to broadcast over the internet. About a month later we both got a letter in the mail in regards to the same thing. After some research we discovered that the licence would cost $250 per year. Both of us ignored the letter, however this weekend MG recieved a certified notice from BMI, due to this he pulled the broadcast prtion of his site down. Have done some follow up research I found these two articles up at CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/industry/04/13/webcasting.royalties.idg/index.html http://www.cnn.com/2000/TECH/computing/12/20/music.fees.idg/index.html MG has been in contact with the owners of other sites like Gotta Have House and it seems we are all being hit with the same thing. What the f*^%k is going on. I urge all of you to follow up on this info. The future of Underground Radio is now under attack on the net. We couldn't get FCC licensing for FM broadcast and now we are being urged to pay fees to broadcast on the net. What is that? I can understand of you are making money off of your webcast but most of us do this simply to promote quality underground music. Well, the festival actually runs Sat - Monday... I'm going Monday so I'm curious as to whether it will still rain that day or not. Secondly, it rained all weekend last year if I remember correctly that didn't exactly hamper attendence, did it? :) And even if the rain did affect attendance... the people that REALLY wanted to go would still be there in spite of the rain. Re: [313] Internet Monopoly
the most ridiculous things about these rules are those having to do with restrictions concerning the number of times you play a certain artist, or label, or songs from an album. I came across this issue several times, especially when I would do artists/producer features, label retrospectives and the such. mad wax | the vocode project | http://www.vocode.com - Original Message - From: Jeffrey Paul [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, May 23, 2001 4:32 PM Subject: Re: [313] Internet Monopoly At 03:28 PM 5/23/2001, Ian wrote: on 5/23/01 3:18 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: and now we are being urged to pay fees to broadcast on the net. What is that? I can understand of you are making money off of your webcast but most of us do this simply to promote quality underground music. Interesting angle here. You could try to counter that fees should be waived due to the fact that you are not billing *them* standard fees for promotion of the recordnings. Then again, I have no direct experience with the law in this regard. jwz, one of the guys who wrote netscape, made a ton of money and is opening a club. on his site for the club, he outlines the hows and whys of all the licensing needed to legally operate an audio webcast: http://www.dnalounge.com/backstage/webcasting.html Interesting quote: So, when you want to perform music, you pay all three of these organizations. Rather than asking you which particular songs you're playing, they just charge you a blanket rate for access to their entire catalog; and then they make their own decision on how much of your money to pass along to the various copyright holders. They do this statistically, by looking at the popular music charts: rather than paying the particular artists you've played, they just assume that almost all of your money should go to the most popular stars. And yes, you have to pay all three of them. Though they each represent disjoint sets of artists, they each represent a very large number of artists: so many that they just assume that you're playing something by someone they represent. So if you're not paying them, then they will sue you. -j - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
