2001-07-09 Thread Fred Heutte
(sorry if this is a repost, but I don't think the last one went through...)

--

I am completely suspicious of this United Devices outfit. They have
a very spiffy and well-laid-out web site that manages to disclose
exactly nothing about the work they are doing, the revenue from which
they then donate a small portion to Make-a-Wish or whoever.

We don't know if they are factoring primes, running engineering models
for oil exploration, working on biotech genome coding or processing
law enforcement records. Their privacy page states all kinds of wonderful
things about how they won't snoop on your system, but of course their code
is closed source and we can't audit it. I don't particularly like the
notion that my PC could be used to do the math for the next super-secret
high tech weapon or the next miracle drug cure, and I won't know for sure
what it is in any event and whether the next project won't maybe have a
local system monitoring function built in. Or when the next skr1pt hax0r
figures out how to hijack this stuff and use it for distributed attacks.

The company has $13 million in venture money from Softbank and has hooked
up with Intel and Exodus. This Make-a-Wish tie-in is very nice but what
they are really doing is sugar-coating a method of buying processor
cycles for nearly free. If they really did this right, they would post a
price and make you a deal and make it conditional on source code review
and opt-in based on the type of work being done. In other words, a real
commercial proposition. And that ain't happening.

I just think this is another gasp out of the now-dead dot.com IPO era.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] is a great proof of the distributed processing concept, but
that was an entirely non-commercial venture with full source code
available. These people are just riding on the SETI project's reputation
for commercial gain. The CEO is a corporate drone whose background
is Dell, Intel and Microsoft. The chief scientist is the top guy from
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and a Berkeley professor. The new marketing director is one
of the losers who destroyed Deja.com, leaving the wreckage to be picked
up by Google. I am sure they are dynamic, driven, well-meaning people,
but they are running a commercial concern and their VCs want them to
perform.

[313] need help finding a label, etc

2001-07-09 Thread Recoil

i was listening to this guy spin a set this morning but i can't for
the life of me remember what some of the names of the the records are -
wicked snappy techno (i only spin oldskool jungle, so i can't really
describe it better than that). one of the labels had some info on it about a
website- i think the label might be called IO or something- i think it was
European- i'm pretty sure it had the letters io in it's web site addy. i
know that's not much to go on, but any info is appreciated - while i'm at
it- can someone hook me up with some good techno web sites with archives,
mixes etc, also good online record stores with sound clips, etc would also
be greatly appreciated - i know what i like when i hear it, but i am very
ignorant about good labels, artists, etc, so i need some education. i know
i've heard some good stuff on Force Inc and Chain Reaction, also some very
good Scranz techno which i really liked- any info is helpful- if by any
chance any of you are into oldskool jungle/breakbeat hardcore/db, feel free
to e-mail me if you need any knowledge

thanks

Re: [313] help the Global Dance Culture Collective search for a cancer cure...

2001-07-09 Thread eric hamilton
Hi Fred,

I have no personal or professional ties with United-Devices, but I do
know that the commercial projects are opt-in only, meaning that you
decide which projects you will or won't work on, and their client does
give you a graphical representation of the work that's going on. Of
course, without public sourcecode, that might be faked, but this is a
large venture launching with a very worthy non-profit cause. If you
choose to work on their for-profit projects, they will donate to
non-profit organizations in your name, and reward you. Their
for-profit compensation is not clearly laid-out, but as they make very
clear on their web-site, it's opt-in only, meaning that if you don't
tell them you want to participate in a particular project, you won't
get a work-batch for that project.

I have personally opted to work on both types of projects (hoping that
my donation will benefit charities like make-a-wish), but so far my
computer has recieved nothing but cancer research jobs. I admit, I
haven't been doing it long, but it looks good to me. The client code
seems to work really well - meaning that if I don't have the display on
my screen, I can't tell it's running at all, and I've been monitoring
network activity - it only connects to the server when it's uploading
batch jobs.

I agree they should release their source code, but the company is a
for-profit venture which believes in intellectual property, so it's a
toss-up. They may eventually release it, or they may not, but until an
ambitious non-profit project embarks on a cause so worthy, I'll still
support UD. They seem to be doing a very good thing, and they seem to
be doing a fairly good job of it.

in my set of techno toptrumps (came free with the dj hell X-mix
album) it claims that Acquaviva has 40,000 records in his
collection. Can this be true? I don't think I own 40,000 things,
  let alone tunes.

  it's true.

I read somewhere recently that it was 50,000.
keeps them stored in two different places to.
I wounder if that is a loss pervention method?

It's because he ran out of space in his home.

Yet another reason to go digital. Once encoded, all the space it takes up is a
tiny portion of a little spinning magnetic platter...

And, to my knowledge, IO is more of an obscure pseudonym with special
guest stars appearing occasionally. I can't remember which one it is, but
one of my Cheaps credits IO as Patrick Pulsinger, Erdem Tunakan, Umberto
Gollini and Gerhard Potuznik.
Still, I think Pulsinger has been responsible for most of the IO-material.

Which is nice. :)

(and won't) mention all of the tracks by namebut thus far i've heard
some rhythm n sound, basic channel, stewart walker, theorem, FUSE,
Plastikman (spastik) and carl craig (the climax and 4 My Peepz)
amongst others. very tasteful umm.edits ( wouldn't call them mixes ),
but he goes all over the place with this release as well, not just straight
ahead like the DE909.

i don't know if this raises the bar for mix CDs...because it's more of an
edit CD than anything..but whatever it isit's definitely worth a
listen. he took it to a new level.

What RH said (sampling a load of records breaking them down to loops)
made it sound like he may have put it together in Acid which would, of
course be the natural tool to use. I've thought about doing something
similar before. Leave it to rich to beat me to the punch ;-)

[313] Hawtin in New York I-F

2001-07-09 Thread alan . ocairbre2
I went to the boat party last night and was disappointed with Richie Hawtin.
I hadn't heard him dj in a few years and I felt that what he was playing
last night really bored me. There seemed to be little variation in the music;
it almost sounded as if he was playing the same record all night - all
percussion
and no melody. There was one highlight for me however - Kraftwerk's Tour
de France. Everyone else at the party seemed to like it though, as the
atmosphere was great.
Went to see I-F on Saturday night. I presumed he was doing a live PA but
he was djing. It was excellent. The guy who played before him was also
very impressive.
