Lennon tribute postponed NEW YORK (AP) -- Come Together, a tribute to John Lennon that had been scheduled Thursday at Radio City Music Hall, now is set for October 2. Alanis Morissette, Dave Matthews, Moby and Nelly Furtado are among those scheduled to perform. Kevin Spacey will be the host of the event, which will air live on TNT (8 p.m. ET). The concert was rescheduled because of last week's terrorist attacks, said Steve Koonin, TNT's executive vice president and general manager. The appropriateness of John Lennon's words, message and music is even more timely now, said Ken Ehrlich, whose company is producing this event. New York City identified and shared a mutual love affair with John and Yoko (Ono), and now more than ever, that unbreakable bond grows even stronger in this time of healing. The concert was originally to benefit nonviolent causes, but now also will support relief organizations set up in New York City. _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[313] Fwd: FC: Text of Mobilization Against Terrorism Act now online
Hello, I am really sorry for posting something completely off topic to a music related mailing list, but I think this is something that list members should be aware of. There is a great deal of legislation flying through congress that will seriously erode civil rights in the name of security. I think we all know that legal changes need to be made because of the events of the 11th, but we should also make it a point to let our legislators know that legislation that unnecessarily restricts and infringes upon our personal freedom and constitutional rights is not the correct solution to our country's problems. again I am sorry for posting this, if you guys want to flame away I understand. Please do follow the links I have posted, and if you find any of them disturbing, please take the time fwd these links to friends, and to write/email your state and federal representatives to let them know how you feel. Activism can seem pointless or ineffective at times, but if there is a chance that we can avert some suffering caused by our government because of over-reaching knee-jerk legislation, giving 20 minutes of our day at work to write a few emails seems like a small price to pay. Take care, Mike From: Declan McCullagh [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: FC: Text of Mobilization Against Terrorism Act now online Date: Wed, 19 Sep 2001 23:39:37 -0400 Text of the Mobilization Against Terrorism Act: http://vorlon.mit.edu/~declan/mata/ http://www.well.com/~declan/mata/ Background: http://www.politechbot.com/p-02531.html -Declan ** http://www.wartimeliberty.com/article.pl?sid=01/09/20/0333204 Text of President Bush's Anti-Terrorism Bill Now Online posted by declan on Wednesday September 19, @10:20PM from the be-sure-to-read-the-fine-print dept. For the last week, Washington has been buzzing about what may -- or may not -- be in the Mobilization Against Terrorism Act. We now have a draft copy of MATA online that you can find at http://vorlon.mit.edu/~declan/mata/ or http://www.well.com/~declan/mata/. (Alas, it's in a series of JPG files, but if someone wants to take the large version and OCR it, please post a link in the comment thread below.) The Bush administration sent a draft of MATA to Congress late Wednesday, with the House Judiciary committee pledging a legislative hearing followed by a full committee markup as soon as possible once they receive the final version. We'll let you look through the bill yourself, but note how this would expand the utility of the Net's two favorite surveillance systems: Carnivore and Echelon. If you want to crib from a summary, see the outline we posted on Tuesday. EFF's press release on MATA is attached below. --- Electronic Frontier Foundation Media Release For Immediate Release: September 19, 2001 Contacts: Shari Steele, EFF Executive Director, [EMAIL PROTECTED], +1 415 436-9333 x103 Lee Tien, EFF Senior Staff Attorney, [EMAIL PROTECTED], +1 415 436-9333 x102 (office), +1 510 290-7131 (cell) DOJ's Anti-Terrorism Law Would Dismantle Civil Liberties Legislate to Improve Security Not Eliminate Freedoms San Francisco, California - The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) today criticized the Mobilization Against Terrorism Act proposed by the US Department of Justice because many provisions of the law would dramatically alter the civil liberties landscape through unnecessarily broad restrictions on free speech and privacy rights in the United States and abroad. EFF again urged Congress to act with deliberation in approving only measures that are effective in preventing terrorism while protecting the freedoms of Americans. Attorney General John Ashcroft distributed the proposed Mobilization Against Terrorism Act to members of Congress after Monday's press conference at which he indicated that, among other measures, he would ask Congress to expand the ability of law enforcement officers to perform wiretaps in response to the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. Ashcroft asked Congress to pass anti-terrorism legislation including expanded electronic surveillance by the end of this week. EFF believes this broad legislation would radically tip the United States system of checks and balances, giving the government unprecedented authority to surveil American citizens with little judicial or other oversight. One particularly egregious section of the DOJ's analysis of its proposed legislation says that United States prosecutors may use against American citizens information collected by a foreign government even if the collection would have violated the Fourth Amendment. Operating from abroad, foreign governments will do the dirty work of spying on the communications of Americans worldwide. US protections against unreasonable search and seizure won't matter, commented EFF Senior Staff Attorney Lee Tien. Additional

If you are using outlook as your mail client and are sent the virus with your the preview pane on, you will fire off the exe. Turning the pane on and off can be done under the 'View' menu for those not familiar with where it lives. Then if you get an unknown email you can just delete. Very well, I guess all of you have been seeing (just as I've been) images from this company. In Particular, one set of images caught my attention: the Palestinians celebrating the bombing, out on the streets, eating celebration sweets and making funny faces for the camera. Well, THOSE IMAGES WERE SHOT BACK IN 1991!!! Those are images of Palestinians celebrating the invasion of Kuwait! It's simply unacceptable that a super-power of communications as CNN uses images which do not correspond to the reality in talking about so serious of an issue. At the BBC here, we have these footages on videotapes recorded in 1991, with the very same images. But now, think for a moment about the impact of such images. Your people are hurt, emotionally fragile, and this kind of broadcast has very high possiblity of causing waves of anger and rage against the Palestinians. It's simply irresponsible to show images such as those. Palestinian journalists and officials reportedly claim the footage dates back to 1991, but was passed off as being current. CNN says a Reuters camera crew filmed the celebrations in East Jerusalem hours after the hijackings. It says the allegations stem from an email by a Brazilian student. The Universad Estatal de Campinas-Brasil (Unicamp) says one of its students sent the email after apparently receiving information from a professor at another institution. Marcio AV Carvalho later realised the claims were false and sent out a correction, says Unicamp. A spokesman said: The original message, however, was distributed all over the world, often with many distortions. A CNN spokesman told Ananova: CNN rejects as baseless and ridiculous an allegation being circulated by email and the internet claiming that CNN televised 10-year-old videotape to illustrate Palestinians celebrating in the wake of the horrific September 11 tragedies in the US. CNN applauds Unicamp for setting the record straight. The videotape in question was shot by a Reuters TV camera crew on September 11. According to the Islamic Republic News Agency, the Palestinian Journalists' Association has condemned CNN for journalistic treachery. Sorry to go off topic but I thought this was worth posting ... Russell Grossman | Head of Internal Communication | BBC Third Floor | London Broadcasting House | LONDON W1A 1AA -- I thought so, the night they first showed those images, a BBC news reporter in Palestine (I forget her name) denied that these scenes were taking place. ** * Important. RE: [313] Enough with the False CNN Coverage ting, already!
ok, maybe you're right, but as far as I know, in those images all you can see is about 5 kids, a woman and two adults celebrating (about 9 or 10 people). That's all the celebration? is that all the footage CNN could get? Why are this images said to be celebration of the palestinians, for me it is a celebration of 10 palestiniansd, most of them kids... I think that is also distorting reality. I'm not defending anyone here, all I say is this type of things promote hate and violence, and that's exactly what we are trying to avoid, or is it not? I'm really getting sick of this thing. The False CNN coverage is a hoax: http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/middle_east/newsid_154/1540102.st m and http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_402920.html?menu=news.latestheadlines CNN says fake footage claims are 'baseless and ridiculous' CNN says accusations it faked footage of Palestinians celebrating the US terror attacks are baseless. Let's just clarify one thing here buddy... anti-Muslim or anti-Arab sentiment, as wrong as it is, CAN NOT be equated with Racism. Why, you ask? Because Arabs do not represent a distinct Racial group. Technically they are Caucasian, but ETHNICALLY they are Semitic peoples... the same as Jews! In fact, Jews and Arabs are genetic cousins; there has been scientific research done to this effect. Brian, What do you really expect? The Arab world has their extremists and we have ours. There is NOTHING the media could say to stop these senseless killings from happening. When I hear of a guy throwing a gas bomb into someone's home and hitting a little kid but thankfully not exploding it gets me sick. We all know that there are so many Americans on the edge anyway; they've found an excuse to commit horrible acts. Hopefully it won't get completely out of hand but I'm not very confident in that belief. You're right... I misused the term mincing words, ironically enough. But I guess my point is that it is not just Johnny Whitebread who might be persecuting Arabs right now. I don't know about Ann Arbor, but where I live in very ethnically diverse Brooklyn, I have heard *racially diverse* people (Black, White, and Hispanic) express suspicion towards Arab or Muslim residents. It is not a racial issue because, although Billy Redneck might tend to be the one who actually commits an act of violence towards someone who may not even be Arab, there is no specific racial allegiance amongst non-whites that embraces Arabs either. These are cultural and ethnic biases that people of many races have. For example, there have been longtime tensions between Arab and Black communities in certain areas including Harlem and Detroit, which has the largest Arab population in the country. Perhaps I came off a little strong, but I just don't think this type of prejudice should necessarily be confused with Racism. -J on 9/20/01 7:42 PM, Brian Dillard at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: um, mincing words means to quibble about precise definitions when the general meaning of the discussion is clear. you're the one who's mincing words. i think you meant to say, don't misuse words, but whether you call it racism, ethnic discrimination, anti-semitism or anything else, the fact remains that all sorts of americans who don't look like johnny whitebread are being harassed, discriminated against and in some cases killed because xenophobic americans, looking to alleviate their feelings of powerless, are lashing out against anyone they think even looks like they could be a terrorist. my south asian boyfriend's a grad student in liberal bastion ann arbor of all places, and he's been getting pointed at in the residence halls, hassled by teen-agers at dairy queen and generally made to feel like he shouldn't be showing his face. this is happening all over the country, and harassment is the least of it. you seem to feel very superior that you know the difference between a race, an ethnic group, etc., but what's your point? does it do a sikh man who's being gunned down at a gas station in arizona any good to argue that not only are arabs caucasians, but that sikhs aren't arabs at all but are south asians? i don't think so. brian dillard -Original Message- From: Jason Kessler [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, September 20, 2001 7:21 AM To: gord; David González Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] Enough with the False CNN Coverage ting, already! i completely agree that it's not just johnny whitebread who's doing the persecuting. in my original post i said it was people who don't look like johnny whitebread who are BEING persecuted, but perhaps i should have said that it's people who don't fall into an instantly recognizable ethnic group which is well-established in the united states. i think there are lots of instances of blacks / whites / hispanics and even east asians not knowing or in some cases caring about the rich diversity of ethnic and national groups that exist outside what we traditionally think of as the four main ethnic groups. hence sikhs getting harassed because people think they're arabs, pakastani women being threatened, etc. american thinking on race generally tends toward gradual, if grudging, acceptance of specific groups once they have reached a certain population and economic level in this country. remember, at one time italians, poles, even the irish were considered unsavory ethnic groups even though they were eventually subsumed into the illusory caucasian ethnic group. at any rate, i DO think it's the responsability of the media not to just broadcast the same platitudes about not turning against our own from politicians, but to educate about the many, many nationalities and ethnicities that may seem, during these trying times, to be arabic. all the rhetoric i'm hearing kind of just casually mentions that non-arabs are being harassed; i think that people are so frightened of seeming like they're saying it's ok to harass arabs as long as you're sure that they're arabs that not enough is being said about racial, ethnic and religious diversity of those parts of the world that aren't america/europe/china/japan/africa. my $.02. brian -Original Message- From: Jason Kessler [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, September 20, 2001 8:20 AM To: Brian Dillard; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] Enough with the False CNN Coverage ting, already! There may be nothing that the popular MEDIA can say or do but as citizens of the US there is something each and every one of us CAN do. Search out organizations in your area that are supporting local Muslim communities and get active with them. Learn about the Qu'ron (Koran), read it even. Speak out against injustices you see, or even hear about. Get involved with Amnesty International. Write to your community broadcasters, newspapers, politicians, GET F*CKING INVOLVED PEOPLE! If you think this is going to be another Desert Storm, think again. Here's some info on why Afghans have fled their country: http://web.amnesty.org/ai.nsf/countries/afghanistan?OpenViewStart=1Count=30Expandall and this - which takes some time and courage to read completely through http://www.amnesty.org/ailib/intcam/afgan/afgtoc.htm What gets me about all this is that there has been little talk about how the Taleban (Taliban) came to power. Can you guess why? Along those lines, there doesn't seem to be any coverage of dissedent voices anywhere and that scares the sh*t out of me. Check this out for an interesting analysis about the lack of criticism of US policy (thanks Sarah!) There is NOTHING the media could say to stop these senseless killings from happening. You can also look at how Palestinian's are treated by the Israeli government to see why there are militant Islamic groups! In addition, we supported bin Laden during the Afghan war against the USSR. We gave him support from the CIA, and the military. Then we looked the other way as the Taleban took control of Afghanistan... they did this with the arms we gave them during the Afghan-Soviet war. I will supply the resources to back this up if you want. peace MEK From: Erin Swenson-Healey [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] Enough with the False CNN Coverage ting, already! Take not the Jews and the Christians as Auliyâ' (friends, protectors, helpers, etc.), they are but Auliyâ' to one another. And if any amongst you takes them as Auliyâ', then surely he is one of them. Re: [313] Kenny Larkin
I dont know tons of details, but as far as I know Kenny Larkin is not planning on giving up music for comedy. I actually spoke with him about this subject because I to was concerned. His response was that he was relocating to California (LA I think he said) in order to persue his comedy. He did specify that he was definitely going to continue to produce and perform but is just changing his home base, ie traveling back and forth from that location. chana _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
