I don't know much but AFAIK they're the same guys (guy?) behind the two
Soundhack 12"s and also the Soundstream EP. I think they've also done
something under the Errorsmith name but I might well be wrong.

The Soundhack 12"s are great - the only kind of minimal house I really dig
cos its still got that jackin' cut-up feel to it.

MMM is erik & fiedel, errorsmith is just erik.
erik once said he _feels_ related to the soundhack/ soundstream
releases but soundhack actually is a guy called frank.

there are two MMM releases so far, the first was the electro cut/
re-ticks EP which is quite hard and industrial electro stuff, like
armin said. and the second one is the donna release.

there will be an album of erik (errorsmith) and soundhack
very soon called Smith & Hack... if anyone of you happens
to be in berlin on friday dec 7th, there is the Smith & Hack
record release party with Smith & Hack playing live;
djs: rene & pete (chain reaction, hardwax), and soundhack.
looking forward to that.

Thanks Janos!

That site is most helpful, hell 'Parallel' is just by Bernd Maus, and while the
on/off stuff and the Gadgets Special 'Be Real' release DO sound alot like
Carola, the stuff on the Gadgets label sounds completely distinct. In fact
there's only one release after Gadgets 9, called 'Sky' and it's full of melodic
big room techno! Perfect.

Gadgets were awesome in there first few releases, Parallel is still my

by the extremely hard to find LP (which is Various Artists but contains some
Gadgets material)
'Users and The Gadgets' feat Gadgets, Sasse, Question (M. Carola), Mr.

really good release) the releases have become glorified Carola takeoffs
utilizing the same sound and feel as some of the Question tracks. Gadgets is
(aka Corrado Izzo owner of i220 records), find some of his older stuff if
you like Parallel alot, anything below Gadjets 9 is good, the On/Off stuff
is definitely solid but more in the Question vein again. In fact almost all
the Gadgets records I do like are colloborations with Bernard Maus (of Maus

Hardwax (www.hardwax.com)

Re: [313] OT Gas,Sturm...?

2001-11-07 Thread M. Todd Smith
I thought the question was for stuff like Gas and Sturm?

Kitty Yo may posses some pop ambient in the darker vein, but not a lot.
Ware and Dial are both
good minimal-tech house labels but put out no ambient. Porter Ricks
'Biomechaniks' on Force is a wonderfully disturbing album full of beat
juxtaposition, and grainy noise. DIN puts out some of the finest IDM but is
by no means ambient, even the Monolake release is a dubby breakbeat affair.
Pole's stuff is again close but still a dub beat oriented. The Scape label
has never put out an ambient release, all releases thus far have been in the
IDM/lounge range.

The pop ambient stuff on kompakt is certainly fitting. Of the releases
before Kompakt 30 only the Dettinger LP's are similar to Gas and Sturm.
After KOM 30, the release schedule seems interspersed with pop ambient.
There was also a Gas release in around KOM 40-45, its not quite the same as
'Pop' more guitars and more subtle beats. The Traum label is certainly
similar, though only half the releases are strictly ambient (mostly the
Phillipe Cam releases) and they have been moving towards a tech-house feel
as well. There is also an excellent Stewart Walker EP on Mille Plateaux
called 'Granular Synthesis' which features completely unsequenced synth
ambience. As well some of the latter Chain Reaction pieces come to mind,
Matrix, Hallucinator, Fluxion and V. Delay all have EP's with some ambience
on them (the Fluxion LP 'Bi-Polar Defect' is my favourite). There is also a
whole range of microsound'ish stuff that I have yet to explore but promises
to be much in the same vein.

I got the Transllusion 12" and was really disappointed - doesn't have that
Drexciya edge. Sounds more like Airlock or Ultradyne (not a bad thing at all
but just not like Drexciya).

However the new Der Zyklus II on Gigolo is amazing - this sounds more like
Drexciya and Elecktroids. Well actually it just sounds like Kraftwerk. Still
a great EP although less gnarly than the first Der Zyklus two-tracker.

I always supposed it was the same person as "Various Artists", since there's

Speaking of Esther, If any one sees her cover of "home is where the hatred
is" , I want it...

That reminds me, I was at the Sink's re-opening birthday last Sunday, and
whilst having a flick through 7"s I couldn't afford and would never see
again, I noticed the man selling them had a portable record player. It was
about 10" long by 4 wide, and was apparently made by technics until about
1989. It looked something like a vinyl walkman... Anyone ever seen one?

Yeah, that's part of what it was about, but Levine was also known as being
the main man for it. His parents owned some successful businesses in
Blackpool, and he was one of the first Northern Soul DJ's to fly over to
the
US with the intention of going to old warehouses and shops to buy rare
soul.

He also became a pariah at one of the other famous clubs, the Wigan Casino,
due to him pushing newer records rather than just 'oldies'. Apparently
Esther Phillip's 'What A Difference A Day Makes' nearly tore the scene in
two.

On a recent journey back to Glasgow I got the new Morgan Geist (Metro Area

somehow able to take a very simple formula and extend it over 4 releases
without it ever becoming dull- I guess they call that "talent"

in using final scratch more and more, richie has started re-editing,
re-mixing, re-interpreting tracks since he can do so and play them
out almost instantly. he's able to experiment with tracks, and
customize them to a mood, venue, whatever. in doing so, he got the
 idea of going (conceptually speaking) deeper 'into' the tracks;
getting nearer and nearer to the basic elements of each track and
what made it work one way or another. hence, closer to the edit.
final scratch was just an influence on the album, a way of thinking
about the music... so that's what it means.

"Pop Ambient" is the most ambient of all the kompakt compilations.

Tobias Thomas released a mix cd on Kompakt that is very minimal called "Fur
Dich"

Check some of the Kompakt label comps - particularly the "Pop Ambient"
series (is there more than one of those?)

Dettinger has two full lengthsOasis and Intershop. Both lovely - and he
pops up on Pop Ambient 2001 as well as Markus Guentner and Gustavo Lamas
(excellent stuff from Buenos Aires).

Does anyone know the name of this song :

( the vocals are a bit Rush-y )

...
dance to my beat..to my beat
ask yourself, can you dance to my beat...
wh? just get down to this groove of afrofunk feal
while we get down to the rhythm of spiritual appeal
expresion of freedom from the descendants of slave,
wh? gives us the strength for new horizons we must
brake
...

cheers...
