2002-02-03 Thread Kurt Hoffman

OT mayhem:

kurt hoffman
45
new york city
musician, graphic designer

in my twenties it was about being in a vibrant downtown manhattan:
minimalism, funk, punk, industrial, post-modernism, the art and music
scenes spilling into each other. Fueled my entry into music. Time
passed...I wandered off into a world of classical music and jazz. as
popular music increasingly made dull use of electronic instruments, I
made it a point to compose/arrange only for acoustic instruments. In
similar rebellion against minimalism and the easy efficiency of the
loop, I challenged myself to make constantly evolving, melodic music.

So you could say I was not in a particularly receptive state for
techno when it came barrelling along, looping like crazy, escorted by
hype and stupid pictures of little space aliens. Years later, Port
Rhombus by Squarepusher was the stray bit of electronica that tipped
me off that I was missing something. A trail of artisan breadcrumbs
lead, implausibly, but irrefutably, to Detroit.

Moodymann, Theo Parrish, Robert Hood, Jeff Mills: thank you. and not
just them of course, and not just Detroit. But...something about
Detroit, right?

I am not a DJ. But I could write you a pretty sweet string arrangement.

Indeed, not overly 313, but a nice intimate party with about 400 people all

Tom Clark played earlier in the night.

[313] Jaun Atkins

2002-02-03 Thread Luna
Just to comment briefly on taking what Jaun Atkins says to heart, I was
wondering
if anyone read the Spin interview with him a few years back. I lost the issue
but it
was in 1997, I think. Derrick May was also in the issue, there was a picture
of him in
a white top and pants taken in California, I think. What I remember most about
the
article, and what shocked me the most was that Atkins was upset about the fact
that
white kids shopping in his record store were buying techno but the black kids
were
buying the ghetto-tech, booty stuff.
He also was complaining about how he didn't like the way Richie Hawtin began
throwing parties. He basically blamed Hawtin for making techno music for white
people
while he was stuck in Europe, poor boy, making money.
I've lived in and around Detroit all my life (besides a year in New York)
and I am
certainly aware that race relations here are deplorable but it seemed to me
that he was
condoning the black-white hate. Yes, it is very possible that the things he
said were
out of context but if that were true I would have expected to have heard public
discussions about it. Maybe on WDET or something. Maybe there was but I
wasn't paying
enough attention.
At any rate, this article made me lose respect for him. Anyone who can
enlighten
me with information showing my impressions to be false is much appreciated.

what´s the reason in telling that anybody ? what does your comment mean ?

and one more 4 them who didn´t read it - Juan Atkins talks about the

 race-probems in music-culture on http://www.xlr8r.com/

 lil take:

America still has a lot of [racial] barriers, says Atkins. There's still
 a lot of racism
here. [I don’t believe] that the music industry is any different than any
 other
industry when you've got seventy or eighty percent white people running it.
 You're
gonna have race issues even if they're unintentional. [It’s like] what
 happened with
Chuck Berry and Little Richard in the beginning of rock 'n' roll. Eventually
 [their
accomplishments were] recognized, though Little Richard’s [veneration came]
 pretty
late. Elvis is still bigger than all of them will ever be.

I think blacks are about to be excluded from dance like they were excluded
 from
rock 'n' roll. It's not that [the industry and labels] are going to
 physically do it, [but
they will] take so much soul out of it that blacks are not going to want to
 get into it.
And that's [how] trance is [sounding] right now. It has no life, no soul.

Maria IS the butt-kicking Violetta of all time. And Patsy is sublime. It's
hard to tie these into Detroit sounds, but a lot goes into the pot when
you talk about influences. I can hear echoes of Motown in the Detroit stuff
- most people think I'm crazy when I say that.
I remember getting into an argument on the IDM-l with someone who couldn't
understand why anyone into IDM would find James Brown relevant. Personally,
I don't see how you can spin Popcorn and *not* hear the connections. One
of the great things about this list is the diverse musical
backgrounds/appreciation of music in general here. I have always had one
foot in the indie camp myself and Detroit has some great things to add into
that stew as well. Of course, it isn't techno and I am wandering abroad
from the thrust of the list, but a bit of variance never hurt the mix imo.

this happens and is horrible -

might be some details got mixed -

but - me myself, I´m also doing interviews 4 quite some time

and I do take care that the things said are not getting cutted and changed

or highlighted in a way that the meaning get´s changed

and let me tell you -

there are so many many statements like that said by black artists and you
know it

they become more relevant with every step when people deny

or don´t react to them - I posted some others b4 -

You want to hear some statements from Theo Parrish about it ?

You did read John´s interviews with Suburban Knight, Robert Hood too ?

http://www.undergroundcommittee.com

WHY do you feel the need to suggest especially THIS information is wrong ?

and WHY the hell you think it should be harming his career ?

Because you do agree with them people,

who don´t want to hear what´s a big part of what´s happening ?

Should Juan Atkins take care about them holding the blanket for the real
racists by

being ignorant easy and on the other hand being whiny, weak and fearing
people ?

You want him to shut up that there are problems ?

You want him to be the black friendly business entertainer who LOVES
especially

white people on the planet, because you identify yourself with being white
?

You want him to shut up ?

Why don´t you try to understand why he might be right ?

This list is full of people in quite good easy jobs, even some with
powerful

positions - so We are the people, who are a part of the problem -

If WE would take care WE would be less a part of it...

many on the list are making music too -

now the question is: why are we/they on a 313-list ?

What´s the reason behind, if so many feel the need to deny this background

of the music ?

Is it because it´s the vibe, that isn´t easy and doesn´t feed the ego or the

hunger 4 entertainment only ?

Is it because people want a good world and can´t deal with them saying it´s
not ?

Is it because the own role and identity is getting questioned this way ?

Is it because of being scared there ain´t no way to participate or to be a
part of this
?

is it, is it, is it ?

or now is it ---

because some are ready to TAKE OVER - the control -?

that´s xactly what Juan said - and it just seems to be like this -

Yes, there was Mojo, New wave, independent and white influences etc.. -

Yes, not every thing is a question of black and white, it is not only about
this -

Yes, it´s about music and music for the people -

but then you need to show up you are people

people - come out and keep talking about this

till the respect RISES back to them why there´s such a thing as the 313-list
--

There's 5 on Clear alone ... only one of those on CD I think.
Another one is a limited edition 7 ...

Re: [313] Juan Atkins - then having a break

2002-02-03 Thread Wes
Nobody is denying the fact that Black artists like Juan or Stacey
have had a raw deal when it comes to gaining anything like widespread
commercial acceptance with their particular brand of techno--you're
preaching to the converted there, I'm afraid. Going unrecognized in one's
homeland is part of the price all artists whose work proves ahead of its
time must pay, like it or not. At least we support their cause by buying
their material turning people on to it whenever possible. In terms of true
activism the creation of what Pullen calls thinking machines, impassioned
music will always speak louder than impassioned words.

Venting one's spleen in a self-righteous attempt to blame the woes of some
Black techno artists _solely_ on race can appear a little reductive has
caused a few firestorms on the list (mea culpa!) You may choose to disagree,
but things are usually vastly more complex than they appear on the surface,
over-simplified arguments (beguiling as they may be), are often alienating
to others and the kiss of death to (constructive) dialogue.

Please respond off-list if you feel you must.

Keep the faith, spread the sounds,

Wes

Hi folks. A few nights ago I put together a contemplative mix of
tracks...
some from Detroit producers and some not. The mix is now in mp3 format.
Sadly, I have no place to post it so that others may listen. I can however,
list the tracks I used. If you are familiar with the material, perhaps you
can imagine the mix in your mind. It needs a title. Any suggestions are
welcome. In addition, if anyone has information on sites that would accept
mp3 mixes from regular folk let me know.

Good point - but PA hadn't yet been released. Odd thing, being old. I
always seem to think that there is some young, mythical group of astute
listeners out there who will recognize great stuff on its own merits (and
yes - I know that there is a great deal of subjectivity involved in making
that ostensibly objective statement about great stuff, but go with me for
a minute :-) and /or step outside their own skins to see
value/connections/innovations in musical history simply by virtue of them
being young or looking the part. Silly me.
Maybe it's because many of my own peers while away the hours wearing out
Bob Seger The Silver Bullet Band live CDs.
More likely is the fact that I'd like to believe something other than
musical taste is more a matter of individuals rising beyond what is
formatted for them rather than accept the fact that it is just that and has
less to do with age, etc. Kant once said that most people are like
...cattle, led willingly...

2002-02-03 Thread Matthew Mangold
Havent heard that, however, it would be very cool... Pure Science's last
outing on B+ was smashing.
For those who haven't heard it yet, I highly recommend it. Three tracks of
housey techno, all of which
are quality tunes-- one with a touch of acid. 'I Get Deep' uses the vocal
sample from Norman Cook's
*69, but uses the whole thing, not just the cheesey part he hooked.
