[313] Boards of Canada
Well, I picked this up last friday. My thoughts? It's worth buying, if you have liked any BoC (not Bunch of C*nts!) before, or if you like strange and exciting music. The whole album is very strange, and very beautiful, and not totally grounded in reality. It's a bit like being asleep, or under the influence of lsd, or being underwater. Maybe all of the above. Anyway, I like it. There are longer songs, which are more like songs, with slow triphop style beats, eerie strings, and snippets of samples and stuff. In between are short (1-2 minutes) interludes of pure strangeness, weird noises, ominous pads which you could compare to Atlantis or something. It's just that if you listened to it in the store, and passed up on it because it didn't grab you, you may be missing out on this year's weird, eccentric, intensely beautiful albums. If you do buy it, get it on vinyl so you can appreciate the massive triple-gatefold with eye-twisting graphics. -Dave __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Re: [313] Some records
Jonny: Larry Heard Praise [Remixes] (US Trackmode) I already bigged this one up, but I'll do it again. Larry Heard's own Tribal Remix is a stormer: it wouldn't be out of place on Another Side, or as a Kenny Larkin track. sounds interesting. i'll have to keep an eye out for a copy and have a listen. I haven't even listened to the other mixes, and this is one of those expensive Trackmode imports (8.49UKP?!). yeah, records are getting so damn expensive. the new Boards of Canada lp is around 20 quid for the vinyl. fair play, it's beautifully packaged and there are 3 slabs of vinyl... but 20 quid!?!? What aboutchoo? the new Connective Zone 12 on UXB is really nice. kinda early-90's UK techno style, tho i admit that's a rather lazy description. their whole vibe reminds me a lot of an old Balil track, Balil Arno Otaku, if any of you know that one. techno wise there's the 3 Pom Pom records. anyone know anything much about those, other than that they're from Germany? anyways, the tracks themselves are kinda like a twisted off-kilter mix of techno and electro. well worth checking out... as is the new Grain 12 on Fat Cat which is a consistently kick-ass record, if you're into that kinda thing. the new Parallax Corporation Fear is wicked n'all. rob _ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

man i dont just respect him. in fact i never meet anyone who feels the way i do about his tracks. he is by far my bigest influence in producing as well. it would be a dream to me if i could only see him. but i really dont like some styles of eletronic music. at the same time that good techno is maybe the most important thing in my life, dancing tribal techousy is something that i just cant stand. but u bet i respect derrick may or anyother famous dj who spin for living. if i had the oportunity of live by spining records i would also play all the christian smith discography. but i think im free to say that i dont like tribal techouse. whatever.. i stil have my hope of seeing the man spin and listen to something like Icon or Ilusion. take care u all. love henrique Good??? and commercial? well everyone has their off days, I am sure you do too..so lets be kind to all those who do mix as , well we all have off days.. Strange as it may seem, the numbers of people who can actually remember him playing his own classic stuff - like Icon, are few and far between ... although Strings of Life, I've heard even Surgeon play! I think it's fair to say (but it remains of course - imho) that he's barely EVER played a set really PEPPERED with his own classic cuts ... I don't know why ... I first saw him only about 6 or 7 years ago in the Sub Club in Glasgow despite having followed his work slavishly since 1987- he was the first DJ who literally reduced me to tears (sob, sob!) and I've seen him about 10 times since then- he has been shit- and I mean shit- about 6 times- very good twice and amazing twice. When he is shit he just plays very middle of the road tribal techno- so far removed from the complex music he used to make- with no dynamics or emotion- as if he feels the audience either wouldn't understand or don't deserve to hear the real good stuff- he is a very frustrating character but then that's life! Re: [313] may's djing (was Lost - further details)
The first half of his Open mix Cd in 1998 (?) under the Ministry of Sound Label is sublime, but it soon descends into drudgery IMHO. Although it's a Mix Cd (nicely cleaned up and all that) it does give some indication of his DJing style. I'll be looking forward to Easter Sunday though, he's never disappointed when I've seen him and will play off the wall tracks that you might not hear at Lost otherwise. - Original Message - From: Jason Brunton [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Odeluga, Ken [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, February 26, 2002 3:12 PM Subject: Re: [313] may's djing (was Lost - further details) Strange as it may seem, the numbers of people who can actually remember him playing his own classic stuff - like Icon, are few and far between ... although Strings of Life, I've heard even Surgeon play! dj's with an exquisite profile, such as mayday's, are expected to perform. there is so much background behind the person, that the average audience don't understand REALLY where they are comin' from, and just how FAR they have travelled, let alone understand what they have seen and heard over an extended career. the crowd may have high expectations these can vary greatly these can alter the mood of the room the room may be inadequate acoustically the room may be unsuitable in many different ways the monitor might not be able to separate different frequencies the tonearm could be bent the system could run feedback the drinks could be spiked the cables may be loose somebody said something stupid somebody could be hangin' t close the fish might have not been the catch of the day the wine could have been oxidized the bed at the hotel may have been used inappropriately the flight may have been too long the queue at the airport may have been too long the local rag traders my have written some b.s. about some m.f. the crossfader may be leaking the crossfader may be lost on the floor somewhere it goes on, and on, ...and on and on there are an untold number of factors that determine the absolute nature of a situation.. and the nature of a dj set for all the m.f's in sydney tonite; please accept derrick for anythang he presents and don't analyse anything while you there..just enjoy the life that he bring the debonair. - Original Message - From: Odeluga, Ken [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: allnight [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Org 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, February 27, 2002 1:55 AM Subject: RE: [313] may's djing (was Lost - further details) Strange as it may seem, the numbers of people who can actually remember him playing his own classic stuff - like Icon, are few and far between ... although Strings of Life, I've heard even Surgeon play! I saw him for the first time about 8 or 9 years ago in the Sub Club also - one of the best sets I have had the pleasure of witnessing. Since then I have seen him about 10 times and tend to agree with Jason on this one - I saw him 3 times in a 2 week period once (Pure, Sub Club then Space in Ibiza) and he played the same set all 3 times - the third time one of my mates left during his second mix saying I'm not listening to this again and went out to hear whoever was playing in the courtyard. He can be absolutely mindblowingly good but it seems to depend what sort of mood he is in. [313] Fw: Jeff Mills: Archiv 4
Artist: Jeff Mills Title: Late Night Label: Tresor Ca. No: 56183-6 Release: April 2002 Distribution (UK): SRD TRACKLIST A1 Late Night (Mills Mix)(4:49) A2 Late Night (4:39) B1 Basic Human Design (5:52) The Tresor Archiv series continues to roll on, unearthing previously unavailable or deleted material from the depths of the vault. This latest release features a long-missing track from Jeff Mills - a remix of the classic Late Night from 1993. The original version appeared on Mills' debut album Waveform Transmission Vol. 1 (1992!), but his Mills Mix remix has remained one of Tresor's most infamous 'lost tracks'. It is believed that the last DAT of the remix was destroyed in a Chicago basement flood. However, in October 2001, the track was re-mastered by Moritz Von Oswald at Berlin's Dubplates Mastering. This is the first time this long-lost Classic has been available on Tresor. The B-Side Basic Human Design is actually an instrumental version of Spider Formation (from Axis Records AX-009), originally found on Waveform Transmission Vol. 3 but mastered and cut at DM; Berlin by Moritz Von Oswald (one half of Maurizio). *** Jeff Mills' Late Night (Mills Mix) also appears now for the first time on CD format via Tresor - True Sprit (Tresor 185, ca.no. 56185-2). Jeff Mills plays Homelands on 1st June. LATE NIGHT: meaning deep or deeper in the night. Mid-Town Manhattan, New York, the summer of 1993 shortly after I moved from Detroit. I just started my DJ residency on Friday nights at the Limelight called Future Shock. As I was beginning to get used to the rush of New York, my tensions from culture shock of moving from Detroit, a smaller city with less than a million people to New York City, the Metropolis, I had began to relax again as my fondness for those infamous New York Nights was beginning to grow. It was a unique time. The sound of Rotterdam was the favorite Techno style, the beats were dark, fast and lethal but, still green. It was the summer: DJ Hell and Patrick Pulsinger had moved to Manhattan and every week, the Limelight was in competition with the Palladium and flew in Techno Artists from Europe to perform. I can remember a lazy afternoon Richard (Aphex Twin) and crew flew in from London and all of us eating takeaway barbecue chicken on the roof of Lord Mike's apartment. Then, the daytime was only a cocktail for the night. In those days on Friday night, the Limelight would reach its high intensity level around 3:00am onward until the end of the night. High meaning, full capacity, swinging cage dancers, the rave flares of Authur's odyssey lightening and the ritual microphone introductions by Romeo Romeo were in an extreme level. As for the music program, it was the honorable duty of DJ Repete and myself to keep the beats right. What I loved the most was later in the night, around 5:30am. The time when the out-of-town tourists and the club trendy had tired left the dancefloor, the music we played got a bit more daring, a lot deeper and all existing dancers on the dancefloor were more alert and sensitive to new sounds. It was the feeling of this timeframe that I tried to capture through the track Late Night. In those days of my transition from Detroit to New York and not exactly aware of my permanent living situation, I was a bit reluctant to move all of my studio and equipment to New York at one time. So, from each weekly trip back to Detroit to fulfill my duties at Underground Resistance, I began to take one piece of equipment at a time. My ability to create the more complex tracks was gradual and slow. Nevertheless, within the weekdays I would have the enormous urges to compose music so, I would try to record with what I had at the time. Which was only a Roland 16 track mixer, Yamaha DX100 keyboard, Yamaha Sequencer, Roland TR-909 drum machine, no monitor return speakers (I mixed through headphones) and one of those new gadgets, a portable DAT recorder that I bought down on Canal Street in SOHO. The day I purchased the DAT recorder was a productive one, I remember recording about 15 tracks within a few hours, Late Night among other Waveform Transmission Vol. 1 tracks were created on this evening. Unsatisfied with the beginning of the only mix of Late Night, I can remember deciding to fade in the level from silence for an introduction, thus discovering a technical trait that I was use on numerous tracks in my recording career. Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers Start of message text but mastered and cut at DM; Berlin by Moritz Von Oswald (one half of Maurizio). The above quote is from Tom's post. Am I being incredibly stupid, or did anyone else know 'Maurizio' was two people? I presume that means it's Moritz and Mark? Irrelevant, I suppose. I just never knew that, I thought Maurizio was Moritz. men and women can sometimes be mindblowingly good... and sometimes mindblowingly bad. depending on moods n grooves... Yes, but when you see someone 6 times in a row and they are one of the best Dj's in the world and they are playing in familiar surroundings (Glasgow had a long standing tradition of Detoit Dj's going back to about 1990) you kind of expect a little more sometimes- my views I know are echoed by quite a few people in Glasgow. I haven't got an axe to grind with Derrick- he was the person who inspired me to start making music and so shaped my path in life dramatically. that's etched as part of our psyche go beyond the dance and experience the various salsas of life It's hard to do that when you're hearing French Kiss for the 8 millionth time or some really shitty Basement Jaxx track or some tired Battacuda thing- if he was playing Salsa Life, Kaos or The Dance I would be going crazy! (no I don't only expect him to play only old tracks before I get flamed for that!) if everyone was the same all the time they would be boring if you got everything you wanted you would be bored Fair enough Jason Brunton Iridite - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thats what I said - it depends what mood he is in. that's etched as part of our psyche go beyond the dance and experience the various salsas of life I try my best - perhaps that why I went to see him for the third time in 2 weeks even though the previous 2 sets were the same... if everyone was the same all the time they would be boring Back to my point on hearing the same set 3 times - if you have the ability, musical ear, ability to understand the crowd that Derick has then why did he tour with one bag of records and play the same set. He gets paid lots of cash to play the least he could do is true to the people who pay their cash to hear him and let the set take shape with the night instead of coming in with preprogrammed ideas of exactly what he will do no matter what. if you got everything you wanted you would be bored Luckily I dont so my life is one big magical mystery tour :-) Cheers BT - Original Message - From: - BT - [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, February 27, 2002 2:47 AM Subject: Fwd: Re: [313] may's djing (was Lost - further details) I saw him for the first time about 8 or 9 years ago in the Sub Club also - one of the best sets I have had the pleasure of witnessing. Alright, nice one. Sooner hear JM waxing nostalgic than most anyone else...Here's something else in a reminiscing vein from back in the day. I think it was his only Texas appearance, he played Deep Elem Live in Dallas and his mixing was I geuss you could say wizard like and flawless (no train wrecks) of course he had some kid with him that would hand him a record every 30 sec or so. He followed up the next day on a local radio show playing the same exact set. Here's playlist for all you old school trainspotters, man I wish I still had that on tape. I was lucky enough to receive in the mail a mix CD by 313's Jonny McIntosh a few days ago. Ladies and Gentlemen of the UK, you have no idea what the hell you have over there. This kid should be playing nightly, and would fit perfectly on a Thursday afternoon 90.9 mix. A truly amazing mix that's fluid and very intelligently put together. To say nothing of the high soulful factor. My suggestion? Badger him with emails until he sends you a copy. Offer to pay for postage and a cd_r. Some of you already know, but this mix is also on Javier's excellent www.undergroundcommittee.com site, so you can have a listen there and guess how much I must have paid Rob to say that. I don't think I could handle playing every night, though, as I'm a lazy wee tyke. Maybe every other. I'm also really sorry for that previous post. It wasn't big or clever. RE: [313] may's djing
I've seen May four times, the most recent last Friday in Auckland. Ironically enough, my best night ever was the night he played the Palladium in Sydney: The crowd was all young university students The air conditioning was completely ineffectual The mixer had to be repaired during the set But I kept on dancing until 7 am after my back had been killing me for the last hour. He crowd pleaded for an encore when he finished, so he played Strings over the monitors. Nice. My worst night was seeing him play at to a strictly commercial party crowd. RE: [313] may's djing
I've never understood DJs playing encores... To me the point of having a DJ is having someone create something over a matter of hours. So playing one record over the monitors seems a particularly bizarre way of doing an encore... There are a few small monthly magazines that tell you what's happening, my favorite being UrbanFlyer. Womb, in Shibuya, has a big techno night once a month www.womb.co.jp and the Liquid Room in Shinjuku has big stuff, too. Of course, you'll have to check out Maniac Love, in Harajuku (I think) that has DJ Wada from Co-Fusion every friday night. e [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Greetings All.
