RE: [313] Slightly OT: Music Software??

2002-05-20 Thread Matthew Cloney
Ya, respectively those two are the ones I've been most recommended to for
that.

Also, you might want to look into Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge for sound
tweaks, effects and mastering, ACID as an excellent separate sequencer (3.0
is totally amazing), and I've also heard Nuendo and Logic Pro Audio are good
for making music. Fruity Loops is a stupid name for a program but it's very
user-friendly and has some great sounds.

As far as making mixes, I've got Traktor but haven't tried it yet, have
friends who like it. Protools is the only other one I know of for making
beatmatched mix cds, but I could never figure out how the hell to get that
thing to work properly. Plus, when you get to a certain level with that
one, you have to buy their hardware as well. My rec: try Traktor. Much
less expensive and much more user-friendly.

Cheers,

-m

Well, it may be cheap in your (humble) opinion but I guess this one quite nice!
Put some strings and conga's in it and you have Moodymannish track.
Maybe some more LFO on the organ-sound to make it sound more 'shakey'.

Why shouldn't you finish this one?

Nice...nice indeed!

Kind of an awkward interview. Props to Liz for being able to pull it off.

[313] spam, 1 minute track

I did a song for a 1 minute track project that someone else is putting
together...

I thought I would share.

I was shooting for something a little old school, very simple, 1 minute
start to finish, and for some reason, I wanted an anemic bass drum.
its mainly a focus of the interaction of 2 simple sequences I wrote.

yes, its cliche and the edits are cheap.. what do you expect from a 1
minute track :)

feedback, good or bad, is appreciated.

Re: [313] Slightly OT: Music Software??

2002-05-20 Thread :P
spektral delay, live, dreamstation, granular tools, VSTs, CEP2, FM7, some
absynth. i dont sequence the hell out of my tracks using logic or anything,
but its nice to automate my hardware with logics midi functions

i do however use sequences of samples that I make, with the sample offsets
and pans, velocities and whatnot all being sequences. then I bounce the
sequences out to wav and can throw live shows together on the fly.

I do use a couple hardware drum machines, several filters and fx processors,
and of course, a 16 channel mixer. my music is very conceptual though, so
my recipe wont work for others im sure.

Until yesterday morning it was a PC running Cubase 5r4, Reason 3.0, Rebirth
2, FM7, and a truckload of other VST plugins.

I've seen the light now, Logic Audio Platinum 5 for PC rahwks! I hated Logic
with a passion until this release, but this thing has everything I've been
looking for in a sequencing/audio package.

RE: [313] Speedy J - o.t. sleeve design

2002-05-20 Thread Giles Dickerson
This is bordering off subject, but because artwork has such a huge impact on
the purchasing and marketing of music, I'll keep going - DR did a fantastic job
of visualizing a lot of music that never had such a metaphorically perfect
representation. Take all the Autechre designs they did on Warp, the album
really "feels" visually like the album sounds (or in my humble opinion it does).

Take Nude Photo (if you've got the original), and all the other Alan Oldham
illustrated releases, that feels like I expect the album to sound, and like it
or not, that's a huge feat for a designer. Believe me I know! It's hard doing
artwork that the artist and label feels effectively expresses the music on the
release.

ps. Anyone have the emotional distortion album by Chris Grey? What do you think
of that design?

[313] Drexciya interview WDET FM

2002-05-20 Thread Roger John Lesinski Jr
Did anyone catch the Drexciya interview last night on 101.9 WDET?
A pretty vague interview I though, and Liz seemed kind of intimidated, but
Drexciya was not helping or elaborating by any means. Pretty cool that She
actually got him on the show. Looks like possibly the first and last radio
interview.

RE: [313] Speedy J - o.t. sleeve design

2002-05-20 Thread Giles Dickerson
I'm glad you have a strong opinion about them, it's better to have an emotion
over a work than not to feel anything at all. I'ma big fan, but aesthetics are
so subjective, they probably suck to a lot of people. They really have effected
design over the past ten years greatly and I admire their direction.

Or learn from them too !! There's a fine line between knock off and learning
from. All design students do is study the masters.

[313] Saturday night's list party

2002-05-20 Thread Jonny McIntosh
Afternoon all,

Me too: well done all. I had a great time. In fact, all too good a time
after returning with some old mates looking for somewhere to drink. Aye, I
got hammered (apologies anyone offended) - so much so that I f***ed off
going to see my mum on her birthday because I felt too fragile for 7 hour
train journeys. Oh dear. It was good to put faces to names, and the showcase
nature of the night made for a great atmosphere. Particularly impressive was
the live set from Max and co. What muppet pulled the plug? ;) Dan - I hope
your mixer's survived the battering of it's reputation. What a faux pas!

Roll on the next one,

JM

P.S. My email's been out of action for about a week and half, so if anyone's
been expecting a reply to an email, sorry, but I've got my excuses.

Guess he may beshowcasing his new album, Loudboxer. CD version is
mixed; vinyl version consists of numerous locked grooves.
He may lay down his recent remix of Gaiden's "Point Blank" as well. If
you're familiar with what he did with that track, the last thing you're
likely to hear is IDM-style noodling...

I dont think thats the same sample. The washy/paddy synth is very similar,
but slightly different chords...the chords on the p. diddy track sound
worthy of a KMS track though.

Re: [313] new Andres and stephen brown

2002-05-20 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

Yeah, I always thought that Stephen's music on the DjaxUp label was the
best of their catalogue (along with DJ Skull). The new one on Transmat is
more in line with the deeper sounds of Transmat than the acid stuff on Djax
- it's excellent still.

Stephen did it as Transmat liked his music and also he saw it as an honour
to do stuff for May's label, and also saw that he would raise the profile
of
his own fledgling imprint. I really liked his stuff. There's a lot of
diverse material coming up from Transmat, from ambient type music to deep
techno and deep house. The common theme is timelessness.

Cajmere presents Walter Phillips

Artist: Walter Phillips
Title: Sometimes I Do
Label: Cajual
Format: 12"
Cat..No.: CAJ 283
Release date: 8 JULY 2002

Cajual is back. Curtis Jones, aka Green Velvet, aka Cajmere re-starts his
highly acclaimed house imprint with a gorgeous piece of vocal house from
Walter Phillips.

Chicago native Walter Phillips began singing professionally in the early
nineties as a backup singer for acts such as Adina Howard, Kool Moe Dee,
and
the Outhere Brothers. From the success of these collaborations, Phillips
gained attention from the legendary R&B act Club Nouveau, eventually
becaming a regular member and spent most of the mid nineties recording and
touring with the group.

Phillips's most widely recognized effort was the 1997 Cajmere hit "Only 4
U"
on Cajual Records. His unmistakably smooth singing style helped propel the
single to a top ten position on the US Billboard Club charts and a crowd
favourite on dancefloors across the globe. Strangely though, Phillips
decided to keep his name off the single, fearing that the attention of a
dance hit would side track him from focusing on the other R&B projects he
had been working on.

Fortunately for Cajual, Phillips four years later, has a little different
perspective on the music scene. While he has been writing R&B influenced
material with such notable talents as Mike Dunn and California based Mo
Kutz, Phillips has now decided to plunge into the dance music scene, with a
full length LP expected to be released on Cajual later this year. The
tentatively self-titled album will combine both house and R&B, featuring
the
slick production work of Chicago house luminaries Cajmere and Mark Grant,
among others. 'Sometimes I Do' is a beautiful taster of what is to come.

RE: [313] Speedy J

2002-05-20 Thread LR2
If his newest CD is any barometer of what you can expect, it'll sound
quite a bit like a live DJ mix. Most of the tracks blend seamlessly
together and as such, the tempo is fairly consistent throughout the CD.
The tracks themselves are a return to earlier form for him with a lot of
them reminding me favorably of the "Pullover" and "Something for Your
Mind" time period. They aren't simple banging tech-house tracks though,
there is an elegant amount of subtle texture manipulation contained
track by track. This guy has been making music for a long time and it
really shows in the maturity, and precise movement of the music.

I did not care for the previous two releases...they weren't bad per se,
just not my cup of tea. When I stuck this new release in I expected
more of the same and ended up being blown away. I strongly recommend
you check him out if you enjoy your techno hard yet seductively fluid.

July in order to live with and marry the love of my life (well the marrying
part only applies to me). I'm going to be broke as f*** when I move and I
haven't found a job yet. If you can help me find gigs (DJ and/or Live P.A.)
please get in touch. I am currently working on starting a booking service

[313] Napster

2002-05-20 Thread Odeluga, Ken
fyi ...
k

Dow Jones Financial Wire20-05-02 04:02:59
WSJ(5/20) Napster's Fate Is Cloudy, Despite Bertelsmann

  By Nick Wingfield

NAPSTER Inc., after a tumultuous week that saw most of its senior
executives resign and then return, reached a deal Friday to be acquired by
German media titan Bertelsmann AG. But the fate of the music-sharing service
is far from certain.

"They will have to make deals with the same labels that they leave at the
altar in bankruptcy," said Mark Radcliffe, an attorney at Gray Cary Ware &
Freidenrich.

Those record labels are plaintiffs in a long-running court case brought by
the record industry against Napster in 1999 for infringing music copyrights
through its service, a system that allowed users to share music libraries on
their computers with anyone else running Napster's software.

The Redwood City, Calif., company's pioneering music service once teemed
with a seemingly limitless library of songs -- from the Beatles to
Beethoven -- most of it pirated and shared by the 60 million users Napster
boasted at its peak. Napster shut the service down last summer following a
court order.

Bertelsmann's acquisition of the company provides a more solid financial
footing, but it remains unclear whether Napster, stripped of pirated music,
can come close to its former popularity by launching a commercial service
with music licensed from major record companies. Moreover, it is far from
certain that those companies, which might have received hundreds of millions
of dollars in damages from Napster if they had won their case, will be
willing to cut deals with it now.

"What really is the value [of Napster] at this point in time, particularly
when you're going to introduce a service nowhere near the original value of
Napster?" asked Peter Astiz, another attorney at Gray Cary, a Palo Alto,
Calif., law firm that specializes in technology companies.

Under the agreement between the two companies, Bertelsmann of Guetersloh,
Germany, said it will provide $8 million to Napster's creditors to purchase
the company's assets. As a condition of the deal, Napster is expected to
soon file for protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code,
through which it will reorganize with the aim of keeping its senior
management team intact. Most of Napster's executives resigned en masse early
last week after negotiations with Bertelsmann fell apart, but by Friday most
of them, including Napster CEO Konrad Hilbers and founder Shawn Fanning, had
rejoined the company.

The agreement brought an end to months of testy negotiations between
Napster and Bertelsmann, talks that became mired in an internal battle
between Napster shareholders.

Napster shut down the service last year to comply with a preliminary court
ruling that forced it to filter out pirated music while the case proceeded.
Filing for Chapter 11 is expected to temporarily stay the record industry
lawsuit against Napster. Yet, it isn't clear whether the court will decide
to discharge the plaintiffs' claims of willful copyright infringement since
there has been no final determination of Napster's guilt, according to
people close to the companies and legal experts.

But those same record companies, whose legal claims against Napster will
be in question because of its expected bankruptcy filing, still hold the
keys to the company's future. That's because Napster needs to license music
from major record labels to launch a service.

Matthew Oppenheim, senior vice president of business and legal affairs at
the Recording Industry Association of America, which is representing the
record labels in the Napster lawsuit, declined to discuss how his legal
strategy might change following the Bertelsmann deal. Mr. Oppenheim
questioned whether a bankruptcy judge would allow the company to reorganize
under Chapter 11 without holding music licenses that suggest it has a viable
business to pursue. "The issue of whether or not Napster should be permitted
to reorganize pursuant to bankruptcy code will be a significant issue," he
said.

Bankruptcy specialists played down the importance of that point though,
saying Bertelsmann's financial backing alone should be sufficient to allow a
Chapter 11 reorganization to proceed.

People close to Bertelsmann said it will "turn squarely" toward the task
of cutting deals with the five major record companies now that it has a deal
with Napster. The company is likely to have a better bargaining position
with the record companies than Napster would have had alone: After all,
Bertelsmann owns one of the five major labels, BMG Entertainment. Industry
executives say Bertelsmann could push BMG to license its music to other
Internet music services -- for instance, to pressplay, a venture controlled
by Sony Corp.'s Sony Music Entertainment and Vivendi Universal SA's
Universal Music Group -- in exchange for an agreement for Sony and Universal
music for Napster. BMG is one of the parties to the lawsuit again

Re: Re[2]: [313] Fwd: too much gear

2002-05-20 Thread :P
1.) if you have a mixer, you only really need a soundcard with 2 mono ins
and 2 mono outs with ASIO support. there are a few good ones that fit here,
but some dont have onboard midi.

suggested card: m-audio audiophile, 2 RCA mono ins, outs, midi, spdif in
and out. costs under 200

secondary choice: echo mia, 2 1/4" ins, outs, no midi, no spdif, but for
midi you could use an m-audio midisport (usb midi adapter)

without a mixer in your setup, you may decide to go for a card with lots of
inputs and outputs, like the m-audio delta 1010. 10 ins and outs, and a
shitload of other inputs and outputs of various sorts, ~$800

as for your problems with live, this is probably one of two things, either
your sound card latency is set too low or to the wrong driver type, or you
are playing a lot of samples at once and live cant read from the drive fast
enough. you have to keep in mind that Live is made to read the samples from
the hard drive as they play, not load them into memory. this has the
benefit of keeping ram free for DSP and fx, but it is quite demanding on the
disk/media subsystem.

I play out with live often and have had no real problems yet.. I have a
concise live setup in terms of gear, but I for anyone looking to get serious
with it, I suggest a midi knob box ala doepfers, kenton, midiman (i use the
oxygen 8), evolution, frostwave, ect..

I'll try to help anyone that has questions relating to the above topics,

-Joe
