it was most probably the version Thomas Schumacher did for his album electric avenue. Best track on the imho. ! That's really funny that you call it timeless. I just reviewed that record for next week's dustedmag.com and the review was about it being a timeless album. It is, though. It's really funky in a way that doesn't scream 2002! The samples are taken from broadcasts picked up on a shortwave radio in northern canada, and transformed into pseudo-house, pseudo-giorgio moroder dance hits. I second the high recommendation! More on the topic of detroit, i just got the arpanet record. Upon one listen I was very pleased! [313] arpanet
speaking of arpanet, it was reviewed in a free german music magazine called intro, and got very negative comments, and the inclusion of 'one good track' was called a coincidence !! they also feature 10 guest reviewers per issue who rate it, it had the lowest rank and was even given 1/10 by the one and only... thomas fehlmann !!! i was really shocked by that, cos i think it's a good one, probably not as kickin as jap telecom, but still very very good... [313] ugh
from McCollum's article in the Free Press today (http://www.freep.com/entertainment/music/demf24_20020524.htm): Scanning the weekend's lineup of 68 artists, some clear trends emerge. There's less IDM, or intelligent dance music, the sort of stuff favored by Craig. There's more straight-up club sounds. This is exactly what irks me ... so Jazzanova, P'taah and Titonton are considered IDM? Can't play their music in a club? Hmm. Not to start a genre-splinter thread, but this type of talk about this year's festival makes me ill. -d - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Carl simply recognized the diversity of the electronic music scene and tried to reflect that understanding and respect for the fans by adding acts like Tortoise and Ae, etc. as well as DeGiorgio, Mixmaster Mike, Perspects, etc. The article quotes a Billboard writer lauding the fest for providing fans a chance to hear a bunch of these acts live in one place. Maybe some of those heading down who can't even tell you the names of the founders would have a broader vision of how Detroit has had an impact on electronic music if that type of scope was more accurately reflected in the choices made this year. I'll be there...can't wait to see deepchord, Sterac, Stewart Walker, Clinton, Tejada, Mad Professor, The Advent, Rick Wade, Grant, Huckaby,Boo Williams, Juan, Oldham, Auxmen, etc., but it's hard not to notice that the lineup might have been a lot stronger - especially given the steam built up over the past few years. What happened last year is truly sad...not just for those in the know, but also for those who might not ever know what they're missing. Additionally, I will miss the on-site Record Time tent. I doubt the vibe which permeated the air at DEMF I (which was conspicuously absent last year) will ever return in full force. Some kinds of damage don't clock in crowd numbers, sposorship or on other empirical registers. jeff - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have to agree with Dan, the only reason I brought up the IDM/dance distinction yesterday because it was portrayed that way to some degree in the MT article (for understandable reasons). OK, how about this: George Clinton and P-Funk: IDM or dance. Discuss. PS I liked George's notion of all this better. He said the paper this morning that it all has to do with affinity for your DNA. And that he tried to go to the festival last year but it was too crowded to get up close, so he had to make better arrangements this year - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Certainly it's subjective, but I haven't found anyone who attended both years who doesn't know exactly what I am referring to. If you had, you would. I've lived in the area all of my life and I love the city as well, but it went beyond that. If you weren't there, you would have a hard time understanding. It's why Carl and Hannah were watching it with tears streaming. It was palpable. Can I get a witness? as are those who you may not consider in the know who stumble across that spot. don't take it for granted (again). this is still a VERY special weekend for music (in case you DIDN'T know). want proof? f*ckin open your eyes and ears and FEEL the world around you! Just to clarify, I was quoting the language of the article which was being discussed when I mentioned those in the know and those not. Having been a music geek for most of my 45+ years, I am well aware of what the weekend is, thank you. I was merely following and adding to the discussion and not trying to be negative. Looking at the changes which have occurred and weighing the resultant differences is not, imo, taking it for granted or succumbing to media driven politics. I would furthermore suggest that to ignore what I have experienced, seen and FELT already would be to don a set of blinders in itself. i'm gonna do my best to feel it from milwaukee. keep in mind that negative attitudes and condescension will only bring about negative changes... and that is a FACT. True enough. Ignoring reality and shutting down constructive discussion can also be seen as a negative attitude and that is also a fact. Because I don't see what you see does not mean my eyes are closed or I cannot feel accurately. Be careful of what you construe as condescension. peace. jeff - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

At 04:50 PM 5/24/2002, you wrote: Okay, I'm not one to say DEMF1 was greater than DEMF2, which was in turn greater than DEMF3 is likely to be that's a game of margins (like the I was at Woodstock, or at such-and-such a Rolling Stones gig in London, or DEMF1, and if you weren't there, then you *missed* it all, buddy). In the book _Stars Don't Stand Still in the Sky_, Greil Marcus gets good digs in on this attitude, showing how useless it is That's definitely NOT anything like what I originally said, meant or implied - nor is it reflective of any kind of attitude on my part. I merely stated the difference *I* felt in the air between the two fests. Furthermore, people whom I know (my wife, for example) who are not in the scene at all felt it in the same way (and she isn't privy to the politics OR the artists involved). Funny how some people can find a whole lot which doesn't exist in the words of others. I understand that internet hermeneutics can be fraught with difficulties, but eisogesis is eisogesis. Attack me on my points, but not on your misconstrual of them, please. And note that I said I would be there and was looking forward to Alan's performance, among others. jeff - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
