Mike did at least the vocals for the track, I remember (I think Tom MF)
sending a note about this months ago stating that there was a track that
Garnier had done with Banks on the 12 which is limited to 1000 copies and
is only available with the DVD.

So has anyone seen the special version with the 12 on sale anywhere

[313] drexciya and Big Kev

2002-08-06 Thread Rusty Blasco

Two things on this beautiful cool summer morn:

1) Is Drexciya's 'Vampire Island' available on vinyl? It's by far my
favorite track on The Quest, but I notice it's tagged by the word
'unreleased.'

2) Last night I was listening to the Kevin Saunderson 'Faces and Phases'
double CD while ironing shirts (hold your derision). Now, keep in mind, I
respect the man and honor his position in the holy triumverate of Detroit
Techno. Yet, most of what I've heard by the gent verges on the bland and/or
underdeveloped. I love that his tracks sound BIG (for lack of a better
word), but they don't seem to go anywhere, besides the occasional (and
predictable) dropout of certain sounds. Also, his particular style contains
elements which frighteningly foreshadow the music heard on generic dance
shows (remember Club MTV?) and even more banal dance comps. Is KMS the
founder of club house??

yeah, very nice.
funny thing is, i just bought the book 'bass culture, when reggea was king'
by lloyd . [i forgot his last name] and it follows the book; same
stories.
ever since i bought a book i get confronted by the genre every time i turn
on the tv. there was a documentary on dutch television about bob marley 2
weeks ago, and now this bbc show [they also showed 'the harder they come'
saturday night.]
the book is higly recommended i'd say, very insightful, the writer spoke to
all the main contributors of the scene, so you get to hear a lot of stories
straight from the source.
can't wait for the next episode on bbc1 [followed by another episode of
'24']

2002-08-06 Thread Odeluga, Ken
Rusty Blasco: I love that his tracks sound BIG (for lack of a better
word), but they don't seem to go anywhere, besides the occasional (and
predictable)

I'd agree on this with a few qualifications/provisos:

*There are some timeless classics with his name on them, which still stand
the test today - no names required.

*The occasional blandness failing has really become apparent imho only as a
consequence of the fact that his sound hasn't fundamentally moved on for
over a decade. Back in '91, virtually anything he did was new, shiny,
strange, exciting but such reactions are usually superseded when others
doing similar enter the market.

*I still listen with interest to any new KMS.

[313] incogdo (derrick may carl craig)

2002-08-06 Thread Maarten Baute
Hi,

can anyone give me some more information on the incogdo - symply just a
ventege release?

It is a record by carl craig derrick may that was released on outland
records in 1995, but after the release.. they got some legal problemes
because of the use of uncleared samples. So they took most of the copies
back...

Now.. I know where to find a copy.. but the price is $60..

so I want to know two things:
1) how does it sound? where can I listen to the tracks? maybee someone knows
a mix where a track from that release got played?

2) Is it really that rare that $60 would be a reasonable price?

The mix from club mcm that everyone plays is the k.a. happy mix? Is this

 Thanks,

Don't actually think it's May and Craig, but May solo. And I recall Dimitri

recorded it in Dimitri's studio?

This one came out around that time that he lived in Amsterdam, 1993? 1994?

[313] i missed the drexciya thread

2002-08-06 Thread carlos h
I was in new york this weekend and not really keeping up with list. Thanks
to everyone who helped me find a good event. I chose a PS1 Moma
reception with Morgan Geist and it was incredible. I wanted to comment on
Drexciya.

Drexciya is an underwater environment. They brilliantly convey
images and feelings of mystery, illusion, race for survival, warrior sea
creatures, and oceanic hierarchy. Drexciya is about escaping from your
routinized life by growing gills and voyaging to the bottom of the ocean.
You run from the things that suffocate you in hopes of complete isolation
and uninterrupted contemplation. Drexciya doesn't listen to any other
music but their own. They resist their unhealthy environment. But what is
healthy about journeying to the bottom of the ocean? Maybe the music
sounds the samey because it really hasn't progressed. It's hard to
progress when you aren't taking in new ideas from outside sources. I
don't think Drexciya is about progression. I think they are dedicated to
supporting this oceanic theme and often enough the ocean can be a long
and endless stretch of the same compound.

Drexciya is a different kind of underground. That is why it is so
intriguing.

I heard that DJ Sneak's new album is called 'Housekeeping' and that there's
a couple of tracks off it doing the rounds at the moment.
Can anyone confirm this? The tracks in question are called 'Fix My Sink'
'Summer Song.' I would love to get hold of a copy or copies of these (if my
sources are correct) but wouldn't really know where to get them. Any
suggestions would be much appreciated.

Also whilst on the subject ...

Shane posted this earlier ..

At Come Together a couple of years ago, I had a professional
digitally videotape the main room performances, including DJ Sneak and Carl
Craig's live performance as Paperclip People. He edited the footage
together into an approximately one-hour tape, with audio. It has never
officially been for sale, as I want to steer clear of burning bridges - but
I will have copies at our anniversary party this Friday. If you are coming
out, look for them.

If anyone gets this tape I would LOVE to get myself a copy (obviously I
could cover any costs / inconvenience.) I know it's a long-shot but thought
it was worth asking.

Cheers sorry for the non-Detroit related content,

G.

[313] Scotland between 17th and 25th...

2002-08-06 Thread Jonny McIntosh
Anything doing?

I'm having to go back home that week, causing me to miss the Juan Atkins,
Farben and Background night (damn, damn, double damn). Apart from the 25th,
when I intend to console myself at the football, I'm happy to travel beyond
my north east Fife confines to Edinburgh or Glasgow. An earlier date on an
Atkins, Farben and Background tour would be nice. One week later and I'd
have got a derby _and_ that night into the diary... dammit.

 Anything doing?

On the 24th I'm doing an little warehouse party in Glasgow called
spatialsounds - resident DJs are myself and local legend Laurence Hughes,
special guest this month is Future Beat Alliance. Music-wise it's quality
Detroit techno and deep house, with a smattering of broken beats and dubby
electronica. Drop me a mail for details, the last one was a great party...

Also that night Carl Craig's playing at Alaska in Glasgow town centre, which
finishes at 3AM - we're going on all night so you could do both if you're up
for a heavy night :)

John Tejada at the CCA this Saturday too - shaping up to be a good month for
raving here...

2002-08-06 Thread Ben Goldberger
relevant quote from Cristian Vogel from no-future message board dated
August 1, 2002:

...since those early days, I believe in UR, as an inspirational musical
force and a significant and authentic factor in the survival and
development of independent music. I prize my Detroit electronic music
collection above some of the others, not because the critics or the
magazines say that its cool, but because some of those records have the
amorphous magic , dusty roots and maverick attitudes that I crave in techno
music...

And, just for the record, I have NEVER played in Detroit , although its
been reported to us that some promoters over the past ten years have
falsely claimed to have brought me over ... I would love to play there
someday but I am just waiting to be invited to the right party at the right
time.

2002-08-06 Thread shane
Greetings all,

Steve Bug. I'm having trouble finding mixes of this most excellent of
artists. I'm also not going to beg the Paxahau guys for hi-quality versions
of their stuff (already been on my knees, practically - to no avail).

Any online locations people can point me to? Skip the peer-to-peer - the
corporate FW has me strapped.

Any help is appreciated!
