[313] Japanese importers? Sublime
Anyone know where/which US or UK online record shops have a decent selection of Japanese import records - I'm very very interested in getting my hands on some Sublime records. I checked out their website but it's all in Japanese with no English language option - so it makes it rather difficult to figure out exactly what I'm doing. interestingly enough, the music that spawned the term (such as black dog's bytes and aphex's polygon window) has a *very* detroit sound. but yeah. this label makes me LIVID every time I hear it. and as far as stoopid dance music goes, yeah, we got that too... it's called happy hardcore. I think i'm having problems with my other email account so sorry for the re-post. Does anyone have an extra ticket they would be willing to sell for Acquaviva at Motor this Friday night? [313] LA peeps Theo Parrish in LA
First Mike Clark, now Theo. Ok, someone PLEASE tell me why I moved up to San Francisco from LA?!?!? Oh yeah, so I can miss seeing Buzz Goree at the FnF campout. that's right. :( Hope someone will be down there to enjoy it as much as I would. Last time Theo came to LA was at one of Marques Wyatte's Deep sundays. He started playing some scraping hihat deep techno sounds (sorry for my lack of spottin skills) and the floor thinned, one guy even yelled Play some house music . I think Headroom and Faith (and their crowds) have a broader pallette so this night is sure to be off the hook. These cats brought Rick Wade, Mike Huckaby, and TP down last year and it was definitely a night to remember, despite the lackluster attendance. I just picked up the flyer for this today. Along with forementioned lineup of Blaktronics, Mixmaster Morris, Daddy G of Massive attack will be: Jonah Sharp (who opened for Carl Craig a few weeks ago with a great live set with Ableton live and a mouse, much livelier than the past material I've heard from him which was ambient and not pumpin funk), John Beltran, Miguel Migs and Lisa Shaw, and 100% Dynamite from Souljazz UK, which I thought was just a great popular series of compilations featuring old and rare Jamaican cuts, but I guess it's a live act? anyone have any info on this act? and locals including Markie of Wicked fame, and groovy live house outfit soulstice It all goes down on Sunday September 29 on Treasure Island. $35 in advance from bulletproofsf.com info 415-252-1000 . interestingly enough, the music that spawned the term (such as black dog's bytes and aphex's polygon window) has a *very* detroit sound. Sure - these guys had a lot of love for the sounds coming from Detroit at that time. I think that even before the Artifical Intelligence series on Warp (2 comps + a series of LPs including some by Polygon Window, Autechre, Black Dog, B12...), the thing that started it was the ART comps from Kirk Degiorgio's Applied Rhythmic Technology label ? [313] Lost Weekend
Last weekend here in London was very 313, with Atkins, Mills, Craig and maybe a couple of others to be seen over the holiday (inc. Monday) Now that we've all probably recovered ;o) how did folk find the various nights? I went to *** LOST *** which featured Colin Dale, Fumiya Tanaka, Mills, Steve Bicknell, Du-Kru et al. Missed Du Kru which was a disappointment as I wanted to see what the reax was from the main room. Any thoughts anyone? Tanaka was awkward - He appeared to ocassionally try mixing *deliberately* off the beat (or am I being too charitable?!?) Colin Dale (imho): supberb performance. Recently he's been veering more towards a house vein than techno, but there were a number of classics. A H-Foundation track early in the set nearly blew the roof off, (sorry track names not my forte but I know it was H-Fdn.) Dale is old school and it shows in the long mixes and precision, but he kept my attention for at least 2+ hours hope it's my perception and that he's not really slowly playing out less and less Mills was Mills and in very good form - 'Sweet Smell Of Fear' appeared, which was nice, as was 'I Feel Love' on a massive system ... However, I sense a boredom creeping in on Mills. A few regular faces were missing, plus already some are saying they'll give the next Lost at 28.9 (with Mills too) a miss. Plus Mills is also on on 21.9 in London. Opinions please! Cheers, K - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: [313] Lost Weekend
I have to agree with you about Dale - much more robust and exciting than in previous years. I found Mills quite refreshing in that he veered away from his usual trickery and even managed to fit in Kings of Tomorrow and Donna Summer (no doubt that will make a few 313ers frown) without being cheesy. I know what you mean about Mills boredom though, Ken. We Brits seem to be happy with one good DJ over and over again rather than looking out for new talent. Why can't we have a few other Detroit DJs over - Terrance Parker, Kevin Saunderson, Mike Grant, Mike Huckaby etc, evn DJ Godfather would be welcome in the second room I think. They could also give a few British DJs a chance as well - Surgeon and Sims can compete with the best of the Detroit DJs. -Original Message- From: Odeluga, Ken [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, August 29, 2002 10:52 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Org Subject: [313] Lost Weekend Last weekend here in London was very 313, with Atkins, Mills, Craig and maybe a couple of others to be seen over the holiday (inc. I really enjoyed Carl Craig last friday at Plastic People, he played a nice set. Juan Atkins on sunday was amazing. The line-up was really good. The livesets from Portable (Background), Any Vaz and Jan Jelinek where amazing! Jan Jelinek had everybody dancing in the small backroom. Juan played a fantastic set. I danced all the way through his set. Played some new tracks and the old ones to. Only a bit sad to see that only about 300 people showed up. Fortunatly these people whre really into the music that night. RE: [313] Lost Weekend
I am gonna stand me ground here and say a few things about Lost. Dru Kru- me personally would like to watch paint dry. the venue was too small for Jeff, but good for the Colin 's. I could not stand Tanaka set. Cheers all! There seems to be a consensus of 'generally good but please, more UK playas and don't let's get complacent.' ... Except Tanaka - jeez was he annoying!! Funny thing is, I saw him once in Tresor last year and another time at Lost some years ago. Either he has deteriorated or he was having a bad night, as on those previous two ocassions he was at least ok ... Re., the desire for something slightly out of the ordinary, do watch Lost as I hear that a party later this year may feature one massive name (never before at Lost) and one name that should be gigantic - both great US djs. I think that even before the Artifical Intelligence series on Warp (2 comps + a series of LPs including some by Polygon Window, Autechre, Black Dog, B12...), the thing that started it was the ART comps from Kirk Degiorgio's Applied Rhythmic Technology label ? The ART series were released on New Electronica. I believe it was just the name of the comp(s). The last one (or two) may have been on OpArt, which New Electronica sorta morphed into (again, peicing together memories, but I'm pretty sure this is right). He also put out the 'Global Technological Innovations' series, which also be classified as IDM. If I remember right, I first heard the term in '93, and I think everyone's right, that it was inspired by WARP AI comps and took hold with the mailing list. Those WARP AI comps were seriously crucial in 'explaining' the link between Detroit and british electro f*ckery - think Kenny Larkin on AI II, or Azemuth's US release as an AI album (I think) - I know it was at least released through WARP stateside (never seen the import to know if it was originally a WARP release, although I'd assume it must be, unless RS had it). The other thing about this term is that it needs to be situated in a historical context. At least stateside, it came out of an aversion to 'rave' sounds, as things like 2 unlimited gained wider exposure. To this day, if you say anything about 'techno' to the uninitiated it evokes images of sporting events and jock jams. It became a tag to slap on your music that differentiated it from the stuff you (maybe) used as a gateway to musical enlightenment only a year or two earlier (lots of irony intended here). Also worth noting, when the term was coined, trance was firmly included in its domain - think Rising High, particularly Casper Pound and Mixmaster Morris, some trancier RS releases like Sun Electric, and Oliver Lieb. To follow through with this timeline, you could see the inclusion of trance in IDM fade quickly from about '95-'96 as the genre codified into its current form. As someone else mentioned, I think things like intelligent drum 'n bass were included as well. It's a completely crap term used mostly as short-hand b/c it basically meant 'music I like that isn't in an off-limits genre' and now means 'weird sh*t that isn't obviously something else'. :) Tristan = Text/Mixes: http://phonopsia.tripod.com Music: http://www.mp313.com Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It's interesting that people should say this about the uk techno scene. Maybe the problem is not only with the promoters but with the people who support the scene. I mean, the line up for the Signal night was amazing. And the music at the actual night was so superb and interesting that I had to keep on running backwards and forwards between the two rooms. Not only did the night have the drawcard of Juan (fantastic track selection and good mixing too!), but all the other artists featured were worth going to hear on their own merits. Yet nearly every techno listener i know on this list and in the rest of London chose to go to Lost. Why? I like Jeff Mills too but we've all seen him play loads of times at Lost and Lost has also not been really special for a long time. It's huge and crowded, Steve Bicknell always provides 3hrs of torturously boring music and we've had a full 10 years of it! Re: [313] IDM?/labeling music
only idiots and musical beaurocrats are prone to labeling (music) We label music to make things easier - imagine going to a record store and there is only one section:- MUSIC. Or trying to describe to someone what music you're into without mentioning any kind of label. Of course we need to label music. exactlyif you ditch all the labels we now use when you go into a shop and ask for a record you'd just invent new labels. it's a form of pattern recognition, humans can't help it it's the main function of the brain robin... - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] Lost Weekend
I'm wishing now that I choose Signal over Lost, but my concerns with that were over the sound at the venue, which, according to promoters who had used it, was seriously dodgy, although this has now been cleared up. I'm sure that things are on the up in London, as the likes of Farben and Jan Jelenik (sp) will hopefully pave the way for some of the more interesting and innovative European live acts to play over here on a regular basis. RE: [313] Lost Weekend
well you took the words out of my mouth Nicole, I guess I feel that yeah LOST has kinda become a norm for people that we all go there..why I never went to see Carl Craig? well my mates were going to LOST and etc etc.. Also I guess I am supportive to John K as I get my records and some great dealds of him, mainly promos that aren't out for 2 months etc , so its a difficult one. But yes I totally agree , next time I see another techno nite ( which will be the Marco Carola nite) i will be there and support that too,(If its as good as you say then let me in!) I guess I am spoilt by the European side I play in . I get to see Chris Leibing, Adam Beyer, Gayle San (when was she here last?) La-Di-da , RUSH, Sven Vath etc Like I said I wanna see a nite that will bring new faces , new people to the London scene. I would love to do this but my time is being torn ( this year) even more with gigs, work , life and children. Hopefully I will be going pro next year ( hopefully!) and I will have more time to promote a nite, and I have always said I will do this( as you know Nicole), and it will only have a one name person like say Mark Broom or Chris from Flux, to draw people, the rest I would like to be new faces and support the uk scene with UK talent. I mean its gotta change and change is a good thing. -Original Message- From: Nicole Slavin [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 29 August 2002 16:40 To: Ian Cheshire; 'Odeluga, Ken'; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Org Subject: Re: [313] Lost Weekend man LOST wanna not become to stagnant in their bookings. to have Jeff is excellent but they must keep their ear to the floor and listen to the people.. Dru Kru- me personally would like to watch paint dry. the venue was too small for Jeff, but good for the Colin 's. I could not stand Tanaka set. He did not realise that his third deck tone arm had gone but he continued to mix on it and it kept jumping, why he did not run with two decks , heaven knows! but even then his mixing was not impressive. If he got paid more than £400 they need to get there money back! Sound system was ok and got better when Jeff came on. I think Jeff's set was great, a good broad range of music through the years. Colin Dale (as I and I am sorry to say this, cannot stand Bicknell's mixing, so opted for Colin) was superb!like you say, very housey but on form, not taking to many risks but better than Tanaka and Bicknell anyday. Mills is back too soon to LOST for Light sound thingy..Bring back RUSH I say as he is always welcome in my book and he hasn't been there for a while. ALso why don't they get some home-grown talent. I feel that they really do miss out on the talent that is about, particularly John Kennedy and Arthur Smith. Ok I know these guys but John can never say he plays at LOST cos of copyright stuff. I agree with his point about being philisophical poets the rest sounds like a bad-day-at-the-office rant to me. music transcends locale. if detroit records cost 2-3 pounds more, *I* wouldn't buy them. there is much more good music available and a lot of it is better than whats coming out of detroit. - Original Message - From: Jason Donnelly [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Thursday, August 29, 2002 11:11 AM Subject: [313] Fwd: (tech-house) Minor rant on a new topic! from the tech-house mailing list: X-Authentication-Warning: c.techno.ca: majordom set sender to [EMAIL PROTECTED] using -f From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: techno.ca [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: (tech-house) Minor rant on a new topic! On Thu, 29 Aug 2002, Tristan Watkins wrote: The ART series were released on New Electronica. I believe it was just the name of the comp(s). The last one (or two) may have been on OpArt, which New Electronica sorta morphed into (again, peicing together memories, but I'm pretty sure this is right). He also put out the 'Global Technological Innovations' series, which also be classified as IDM. Applied Rhythmic Technology, also known as A.R.T. was a very influential detroit-influenced label run by Kirk DeGiorgio from 1992 to 1995. In 1996, because of a name conflict, A.R.T. morphed into Operation Applied Rhythmic Technology, or Op-Art, as the umbrella title for the entire organisation and the record label Most of the A.R.T. releases showcased various artists, e.g. DeGiorgio's projects Future/Past, As One, Esoterik, and Elegt; Ed Handley and Andy Turner's (then two thirds of Black Dog Productions, now know as Plaid) Balil and Atypic; Carl Craig's Psyche and B.F.C., Steve Pickton's (Stasis) Phenomyna, and B12's (Mike Golding/Steve Rutter) Redcell and Cmetric. The first CD release on A.R.T. was a joint compilation with another up-and-coming IDM-referenced label, RePHLeX (run by Grant Wilson-Claridge and Richard D. James, also known as the Aphex Twin, Caustic Window, Polygon Window, Pac-Man, and The Dice Man). On this compilation, you can find the first appearance of Aphex Twin's Blue Calx (under the name Blue Calx), later released on Selected Ambient Works II on Warp, as well as the only known Q-Chastic track from the fabled 2x7 (CAT002) on RePHLeX. Hector and T. Patterson), one by The 4th Wave (Steve Paton) who also had a release on Planet E, one by Sensurreal and two by Paul W. Teebrooke, another one of Steve Pickton's aliases (besides Stasis etc.). As an aside, Steve Paton ran another quite influential and short-lived IDM-referenced label called The 4th Wave with releases by Ian O'Brian, Wavescape etc. OP1 Photek - T'raenon (12, 1996) OP2 Autocreation - Caught Short (12, 1996) OP3 The 4th Wave - Attention Please (12, 1996) OP4 Paul W. ELEC9LP is a compilation of the first four vinyl releases on A.R.T., ART1, ART2.1, ART2.2 and ART3 - supposedly pressed from the same plates as the original. ELEC27CD is a compilation of the whole catalogue of the original A.R.T. releases, released on CD only. ELEC31CD is a CD-only compilation of Op-Art releases. Later on, Kirk released an album on Clear (The Message In Herbie's Shirts on vinyl, In With Their Arps and Moogs and Jazz and Things on CD), one on French Shield (The Art Of Prophecy). He still releases music under the name As One, most recently on Ubiquity. If I remember right, I first heard the term in '93, and I think everyone's right, that it was inspired by WARP AI comps and took hold with the
[313] idm (today and yesterday) + boards of canada
just a little rant on IDM music. i suppose when this genre was first coined, the title had been started to reflet the works mentioned earlier (black dog, aphex, etc) which by all means were great releases, but it seems that now, as time goes on IDM (Inteligent Dance Music) is less focused on music that reflects its title entirely, and more focused on experimental electronic music, regardless of its dance-friendly aspects. one thing that ive found in listening to alot of the releases that get filed under IDM is that being a particularly small nitche, it has alot of even smaller sub genre that get grouped into it as well. actualy...i can remember a year or two ago, before the electroclash explosion, electro seemed to get grouped into IDM as well as alot of the new dub, drum and bass, and even micro-techno that was being released. from what i understand, the title IDM was pretty much coined for use primarily to discuss the music on the IDM list, which some of us are subscribed too. i also remember a discussion a while ago...on that list...about changing its name from idm to things like ILM (inteligent listening music) to better fit its new soundsbut as more releases get pressed, the sound keeps changing...so it gets harder and harder to find an acurate name. if you notice as well, as time goes on, the IDM musics of yesterday seemed to gain momentum within its own subculture...and then got marked as another kind of music, after enough of a similar sound got made. such as glitch, bip-hop or chip tune. artists like funkstorung and autechre (which were previously titled IDM ) artist have spawned an entirely new genre based around a particular style of a previous music. none the less, i think this is just another example of the great phrase labels are only for jars. actualy i find it interesting that in most cases people almost need a name in order to identify with a media, no matter how experimental the platform is. speaking of IDM, i also wanted to mention that IMO, the US has been long overdue for a live performance by boards of canada. being that they play seldomly in their native area, its not suprising that noone has booked them here yet, but of all the IDM artists that i think deserve a stage here, these guys are deffinately on the top of my list. i remember a small thread about them here on 313 maybe six months to a year ago, so i know im not the only one waiting to see such an event happen. hopefully one day ill get to see that. ok im done now. thanks for listening. mike (tangible) www.fulcruminn.net www.8bitpeoples.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] Lost Weekend
I guess I am spoilt by the European side I play in . I get to see Chris Leibing, Adam Beyer, Gayle San (when was she here last?) La-Di-da , RUSH, Sven Vath etc i gotta say that this doesn't seem spoilt to me in the face of what i heard this weekend (Carl Craig at Plastic People was brilliant too). but then i'm a 313 girl, just keep bringing them over and i'll be there (someone listening i hope :) Like I said I wanna see a nite that will bring new faces , new people to the London scene. the rest I would like to be new faces and support the uk scene with UK talent. I mean its gotta change and change is a good thing. Well, i don't want the UK 313 scene to turn into a European techno scene. I don't mind a bit of home grown, but I prefer it to be along a 313 vein. It can still be kept fresh within this context, as the Signal night proved. Put your money where your mouth is and attend something different and not just the same old stuff which you complain about cause it's the same old stuff :) . -Original Message- From: Ian Cheshire [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'Odeluga, Ken' [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Org 313@hyperreal.org Date: 29 August 2002 12:12 Subject: RE: [313] Lost Weekend I am gonna stand me ground here and say a few things about Lost. And why they never book Arthur of Grain , I mean the guy on three decks would piss on Tanaka..man LOST wanna not become to stagnant in their bookings. to have Jeff is excellent but they must keep their ear to the floor and listen to the people.. RE: [313] Lost Weekend
Carl Craig @ PP was just brilliant. That tiny pitch black room has the best sound system in London, forget Fabric and it's body sonic room, this little room fills nicely with people having their guts squeezed by bass. It's the only place I feel comfortable without my ER-25s firmly in place, cos the sound is just so clean. Carl played such a great set, it was so varied, and as ever @ PP one felt one was experiencing something special and exclusive. He played jazz, funk, house, techno, ambient, some electro and african tribal stuff. Awesome from start to end. There was a 25 minute or so period, from when he played 69, on through to Fix Flash and beyond, when the crowd was just mental, but they were pretty mad the whole time, even when he played the strings mix of Jaguar (the only time I've ever heard that track played when it wasn't just for impact/effect).. with the crowd gasping for a beat, only for him to play an old heavy chorded ambient remix of his from yonks ago which went on for another 10 minutes or so. Magic. The resident DJ was also excellent, but I forget his name. Anyway, that night was definitely one of the best music nights out for a long time. I really enjoyed Lost, but not until about half way through Bicknell's set. Du-Kru, who I think are excellent and have seen them play brilliantly, were lacklustre, and I'm not surprised given that they were stuck in the corner of the large main room with the volume knob set to about 1.5. Should have been in the smaller room I reckon. Fumiya, well I dunno what happened to him,but it's the first time I've heard him play badly. He was really bad, didn't seem to notice one deck skipping constantly, bland tracks, bad mixes. What happened? Seriously, the only time I've ever felt like I couldn't follow a DJ was when I played after Fumiya in Tokyo last year, but this time I was not impressed one bit. As I said, Bicknell's set seemed to start off where Fumiya's finished, but developed nicely. People complain about him letting tracks play and then cutting straight to another, but I always loved that in his style, and he played some wicked tracks. Jeff played the best I've heard him since about '97. Not as good as then by a long way, but he certainly rocked and I was not disappointed. I liked the way he let tracks play rather than quickfire mixing, I like to listen to tracks for a while. Plenty of what the f**k? moments, some nice breakdowns, a great vibe, lots of lovely sweating. A great night out indeed. Not too sure about the rapid return in a month though. The last one was a month ago, this is the first time Lost parties have been a month apart for maybe 6 or 7 years. Interested to know who Ken's names are. Nice to see you again Ken, (and Toby of course). RE: other DJs, I agree, but Lost is their party and I'd never presume to tell them how to run it, after all they've been running one of the worlds most revered techno night for 10 years now, they must know what they're doing. Attendance is still strong, which is a paradox in the London environment. How they've managed it for so long is totally beyond me. As a long-time IDM list veteran, I'm going to pick a few nits here. Long, yet necessary (in my pathological trainspottery opinion). Whew! I stand corrected. :) So if I understand correctly, this would mean the Global Technological Innovations series was not related to Kirk DeGiorgio, and his connection to New Electronica was only through Art, right? This post from Dave Siska did not make it through to the list, but would appear to confirm my suspicion: actually i don't think this is quite right. the ART series were indeed released on ART first, and then the first 4 12 releases were compiled into the 'objets d'art' compilation on new electronica. there were indeed a couple of CD-only comps on the ART label itself. the first one, 'the philosophy of sound and machine', jointly released with rephlex, is rather sought-after. a great ART page is here: http://home.snafu.de/circonium/music/art.html i don't believe there is any relation between new electronica and ART, other than the objets d'art compilation. i could be wrong about that, though, since a great deal of kirk degiorgio's work was featured on new electronica, and the two labels, along with buzz, seem to have released music from a number of the same artists. it is true that ART morphed into op-art, starting out with a really lush release from photek. The ART series were released on New Electronica. I believe it was just the name of the comp(s). The last one (or two) may have been on OpArt, which New Electronica sorta morphed into (again, peicing together memories, but I'm pretty sure this is right)... Just to clear this up: ART (Applied Rhythmic Technology) was Kirk DeGiorgio's original label. New Electronica (a division of Beechwood) released three 'Objet D'Art' compilations which licensed the ART material. New Electronica released plenty of other stuff besides the ART stuff, they were a totally different company. ART later became OpArt. hello all- i am hoping to get everyone's help in suggesting some definitive acid house tracks for downloading purposes. i'm hoping to fill up at least a cd with mp3 tracks so i'd appreciate as many suggestions as possible. THANKS -sam Without listing the numerous and obvious late 80s Chicago classics, here are a few off the top of my head that possibly wont make too many obvious lists, but are worth digging out again (I often do) Actually one would probably argue that 303 baselines aside these dont really belong in the same crate as 'Acid House', but if youre just looking for a funky 303 trip then here you go :) Twister - Underground Resistance Bang the Acid - Damon Wild and Tim Taylor Horses - Voodoo Child (Yes I know thats Moby!) That Sysex track off the secong Plus 8 From Our Minds to yours album. Plasticity - Plastikman The final Frontier - UR Vertigo - K Alexi Also I remember having these wicked 8 track white labels that I think were by the Kosmic Kommando and were just all purely 303, 909 and 808 made tunes, but I used to love mixing them all together in one big sick trick acid set!!
