Didn't Frankie Knuckles win a Grammy for remixer of the year?
In the early 90's I remember it wasn't that unusual to see MAW, or

There are still plenty of DJ's in clubland who play MAW, Naked music that

You're right to point out the success of Naked.
Yep, Frankie won a Grammy but stopped doing the mixes as he was sick of
dealing with AR fools who tried to tell him what to do, apparently. Morales
did well to remix Mariah. He got a Grammy too.
But there's heaps of major label payola in US radio too. I guess the point
is the music is not comparable to urban music when you look at the pop
charts. My guess is that explains why in part Armand Van Helden is not
determined to enter the urban market.

If memory serves me correctly a major label did offer to sign
 jaguar with

That track could have easily climbed the Billboard dance charts giving
Detroit techno more exposure in America but some people choose to stay
 underground.

 the track multiple
times, plus a lot of other much more commercial tracks than
 had previously

None of this is to excuse what Sony tried to do, or to dis

Hi,

Just a short note to say I highly recommend Rushhour's service too. They've
always been fantastic, so they might just have had a little blip - no need
to worry on that score.

also just a quick note to UK 313 peeps - If you ever get a chance to attend
one of these 'black music collectors fairs'. Grab the opportunity with both
hands. Awesome selection of very rare US stuff - 12's and LPs - I don't
think I've ever seen such a selection. Collectors prices obviously - but
loads of stuff you'll just never see again.

Bye.

for techno to reach a wider audience in the US and beyond we need
to see it
as part of a wider music culture, not isolate it entirely.

i am sure that a lot of ppl on this list as well as a lot of producers and
DJs already do and are aware of many different kinds of music. the recent
FK set list illustrates this well. as a generalisation, i would say that
the characteristics of (detroit) techno attract a more open minded
sophisticated audience than other kinds of e dance music, that are often
more about drugs, partying or fashion.

Why must techno reach a wider audience?
why does it need to stay 'reserved for the cool people'???

it doesn't 'need' to stay reserved for cool people - it just does and
probably always will. real techno is art and is above the heads of most
people, whether they're into dance music or not. i have played carl craig,
kraftwerk moodymann to an ex-raver friend who's now into something called
hardhouse and nu skool breaks (did i spell that right? ) and he just
doesn't get it at all. musically, it's just too sophisticated and complex
to someone who's conception of 'music' is the stuff between the
kick drums.

forget it, it ain't gonna happen. enjoy it the way it is.

Re: (313) Sonar...

2003-05-06 Thread Tom Robbins/Magic Feet
I always think the Sonar line-ups are odd, to be honest. Looking at the list
below, and leaving aside those car thieves ON, you might wonder why
has-beens Underworld are in there, for example. Or Fat Truckers? Or Darren
Price? He's been so low-profile the last few years I thought he'd retired.
Then you always seem to get the same old big DJ names playing - Mills,
Garnier, Hawtin, Cox, Peterson etc - who although they're all good DJs in
their different ways, are hardly going to be much of an event to the people
attending. I reckon they all just like the festival so much they're willing
to drop their prices to play there every year.

But Robert is right, it's the little known acts, along with all the other
parties and just the general atmosphere of the festival and the beauty of
Barca, that are the best reasons for going. I'd love to go again but once
again, lack of funds prevents it.

I don't think iPods will replace the traditional setup, but I guess it'd be all
right for

have two

I went to the one here at Somerset mall in Troy, Michigan, USA. Matthew Dear

2003-05-06 Thread Langsman, Marc

Tho to be fair the essential mix seems to have recovered recently with them
actually having some credible acts (DJ heather, massive attack, dj shadow
etc). Ive not seen a techno EM in a while but there seem to be a reasonbale
amount of folk popping up on guest spots in other shows. But yeah shame
theres no dedicated techno/electro type show - guess its just not
commercially viable enough for r1 :/ maybe its time to get a council flat,
microwave transmitter and some 313 12s together !!

Re: (313) Sonar...

2003-05-06 Thread Greg Earle
I'll be in Barceloneta from the 4th to the 12th, moving up nearer the CCCB
on the 12th for the festival. I'm sure there'll be some sort of 313
meetup whether formal or informal - you can't help but run into each other
at the CCCB!

The only really good reason to bitch about Sonar is the godawful mausoleum
they moved Sonar Noche to from the Pavella de la mar Bella. The Pavella
and the beach was a big part of the appeal. Who can forget being out on
the patio when the Sun rises over the Mediterranean? (Extra special
element for Americans: having the smell of clouds of cheap Hashish waft into
your nostrils out on the patio.)

Now, as for the lineup ... Sonar tends to be this odd mish-mash of the
daytime (and night) IDM with the nighttime Big Name Bangin' DJs. I suspect
this reflects the taste of the organizers along with a desire to crowd-please -
i.e. the Spanish like their Techno hard and bangin', and nighttime Sonar
has served up the goods quite well in that dept. the 3 years I've gone.

This has led to Sonar being somewhat narrow-cast in range, as can be seen
by the fact that the intersection of Movement/DEMF and Sonar is only
Jeff and Rich. Want 313? Want Electro? Want Tech-House? Want insert
your favorite sub-genre here? You won't get it at Sonar. Curiously,
for the adventurousness of some of the bookings (I disagree with Ken Odeluga
here - I can't wait to see The Soft Pink Truth [half of Matmos], for
example), the organizers are playing it far too safe these days and
aren't willing to consider anything special or out of the ordinary. For
example, it's the 10th anniversary of Sonar - Rich wanted to do a 6-hour
closing set at the Sonar Village at the CCCB (4-10) playing a 10-year
retrospective. They refused and would only offer him his usual 2-hour
banging set at night. G. That would've been kickass.

RE: (313) a couple of threads...

2003-05-06 Thread Odeluga, Ken
Just to clarify:

*Colin Dale [one 'l' in the first name; uk pronounciation ;-) - (also?) had
a show on Kiss 100 FM from about 1998 until about 2000 (IIRC).

*Kiss was a legal station by then. The show was on late pm Tuesday into
early am Wednesday (again, someone pls correct me if I err.).

(I'm not sure abt any show he might have had on Kiss before it was legal.)

When it got pulled - the whole rationale at the time was that Mr C's
Saturday night-into early Sunday morning show (still much healthier than
sleeping pills) was to replace not only Dale's show, but quite a few other
programmes on Kiss which were meant to represent slightly more underground
dance music than one would get in Kiss prime time slots. And doesn't he do
it well?!?

AAC sounds better than mp3 at a lower bitrate so 196 would probably be
equivalent to 256 mp3s. AAC has native support in the Ipod too.

Vorbis excels at 64-128 but I wouldnt want to archive my music that
way. One of the devs is working on improving higher bit rates, I think
its called GT3 or something but its still in beta and development has
slowed at least according to the folks at hydrogen audio.

mp3s made with the lame encoder are indistinguishable(blind

tests) from

the original wavs @ 256

If your only experience with mp3 is from audiogalaxy or kazaa

where you

will run into xing mp3s @ 128 then yeah, *those* mp3s will suck ;)

.ogg sounds MUCH better than mp3 at lower bitrate. this saves you
space for much much more music. theres much less high end noise
with .ogg as well as cleaner bigger bass sounds.

RE: (313) Journey Home

2003-05-06 Thread Matthew MacQueen
I saw that on the soul in motion compilation (from the Irma label)
the track journey home from drexciya is featured. The track on this
 clip http://www.morthenkiang.com/samples/derrickatbetalounge02.ram
is also from the journey home ep on warp. Is it this track that is
 on that compilation?
And how rare is that original warp copy actually?

No it's not on the compilation. I don't think the original is *THAT* rare or
hard to find used... anyone know how many were pressed up originally? It's
Warp for gods sake, they had decent first runs of this. I mean it's unlikely
you'll just run across it in some random used bin, but people buy and sell them
online fairly frequently...

Elevate, for example.

in the grand scheme of things, high-bitrate mp3 (192+kbps) and cd quality
both suck ass pretty badly. 44100hz/16bit just isn't that good to begin
with. armchair audiophiles debate lossy compression vs the uncompressed
originals, but when you're talking cd-quality it doesn't much matter.

sure, anyone can tell the difference between a 128kbps mp3 and the
original. when you encode at 192 or 256kbps though with a good encoder,
anyone who claims to hear the difference is lying. google for a program
called winabx if you don't believe me.
