Re: (313) heads-only techno? nah
You're right to point out the success of Naked. Yep, Frankie won a Grammy but stopped doing the mixes as he was sick of dealing with AR fools who tried to tell him what to do, apparently. Morales did well to remix Mariah. He got a Grammy too. But there's heaps of major label payola in US radio too. I guess the point is the music is not comparable to urban music when you look at the pop charts. My guess is that explains why in part Armand Van Helden is not determined to enter the urban market. I would like to make some people choose to keep control over there own music of it... [EMAIL PROTECTED] If memory serves me correctly a major label did offer to sign jaguar with the possibility of remixes but UR and DJ Rolando declined. That track could have easily climbed the Billboard dance charts giving Detroit techno more exposure in America but some people choose to stay underground. on 5/5/03 3:26 PM, Sean Creen at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This simply isn't true. Jaguar was milked for all it was worth. It got a hell of a lot of publicity out of the whole Sony thing, had a promo video made, and Rolando got serious juice in terms of gigs (where he played the track multiple times, plus a lot of other much more commercial tracks than had previously been in his sets) out of all of this. None of this is to excuse what Sony tried to do, or to dis how UR dealt with the situation, but to say that it could have blown up if Rolando had chosen to let it is pure bullshit (IMO, of course ;-). Why must techno reach a wider audience? why does it need to stay 'reserved for the cool people'??? it doesn't 'need' to stay reserved for cool people - it just does and probably always will. real techno is art and is above the heads of most people, whether they're into dance music or not. i have played carl craig, kraftwerk moodymann to an ex-raver friend who's now into something called hardhouse and nu skool breaks (did i spell that right? ) and he just doesn't get it at all. musically, it's just too sophisticated and complex to someone who's conception of 'music' is the stuff between the kick drums. forget it, it ain't gonna happen. enjoy it the way it is. p

Re: (313) Sonar...
I always think the Sonar line-ups are odd, to be honest. Looking at the list below, and leaving aside those car thieves ON, you might wonder why has-beens Underworld are in there, for example. Or Fat Truckers? Or Darren Price? He's been so low-profile the last few years I thought he'd retired. Then you always seem to get the same old big DJ names playing - Mills, Garnier, Hawtin, Cox, Peterson etc - who although they're all good DJs in their different ways, are hardly going to be much of an event to the people attending. I reckon they all just like the festival so much they're willing to drop their prices to play there every year. But Robert is right, it's the little known acts, along with all the other parties and just the general atmosphere of the festival and the beauty of Barca, that are the best reasons for going. I'd love to go again but once again, lack of funds prevents it. just picking up on some of the last few threads the 'why isn't techno a bit bigger in the US thing' and the ipod thing was thinking - I wouldn't have thought that in the UK you'd get Apple paying a bunch of fairly underground music artists to promote their new product. It'd be frigging Carl Cox and Fergie doing it over here. so - just remember folks, the grass is always greener on the other side. I don't think iPods will replace the traditional setup, but I guess it'd be all right for novices. It's like mixing with two CD players with the exception that you could have two 30GB iPods hooked together and thus over 15,000 songs total to access! Their slick units. I went to the one here at Somerset mall in Troy, Michigan, USA. Matthew Dear and Sam Valenti of Ghostly International were there. Matt's a PC guy so this was his first time with a Mac-related product. He found it easy to use. - Original Message - From: robin pinning [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tuesday, May 6, 2003 5:02 am Subject: Re: (313) iPod pictures (that work) hmmm confused by this.so rich mixed between two ipods? like working two domestic cd players? robin... OS 1.3 supports AAC but you do need Quicktime 6.2 for it to work. Some guy also managed to reverse engineer the ipod OS and managed to install Linux on it, so a lot of nice things could be possible now: http://ipodlinux.sourceforge.net/ But hey am i off-topic or what :)) [EMAIL PROTECTED] yes they store wave, mp3, and an apple format. -Original Message- From: spw [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, May 06, 2003 9:32 AM Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) iPod pictures (that work) Too bad MP3 quality sucks, do they store CD quality audio? they do look like nifty little units. on 5/6/03 7:37 AM, Roberto Ty at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I don't think iPods will replace the traditional setup, but I guess it'd be all right for novices. (313) Journey Home
Hi, I saw that on the soul in motion compilation (from the Irma label) the track journey home from drexciya is featured. The track on this clip http://www.morthenkiang.com/samples/derrickatbetalounge02.ram is also from the journey home ep on warp. Is it this track that is on that compilation? And how rare is that original warp copy actually? Cheers, Maarten my musical interests http://www.morthenkiang.com/
Re: (313) Sonar...
I'll be in Barceloneta from the 4th to the 12th, moving up nearer the CCCB on the 12th for the festival. I'm sure there'll be some sort of 313 meetup whether formal or informal - you can't help but run into each other at the CCCB! The only really good reason to bitch about Sonar is the godawful mausoleum they moved Sonar Noche to from the Pavella de la mar Bella. The Pavella and the beach was a big part of the appeal. Who can forget being out on the patio when the Sun rises over the Mediterranean? (Extra special element for Americans: having the smell of clouds of cheap Hashish waft into your nostrils out on the patio.) Now, as for the lineup ... Sonar tends to be this odd mish-mash of the daytime (and night) IDM with the nighttime Big Name Bangin' DJs. I suspect this reflects the taste of the organizers along with a desire to crowd-please - i.e. the Spanish like their Techno hard and bangin', and nighttime Sonar has served up the goods quite well in that dept. the 3 years I've gone. This has led to Sonar being somewhat narrow-cast in range, as can be seen by the fact that the intersection of Movement/DEMF and Sonar is only Jeff and Rich. Want 313? Want Electro? Want Tech-House? Want insert your favorite sub-genre here? You won't get it at Sonar. Curiously, for the adventurousness of some of the bookings (I disagree with Ken Odeluga here - I can't wait to see The Soft Pink Truth [half of Matmos], for example), the organizers are playing it far too safe these days and aren't willing to consider anything special or out of the ordinary. For example, it's the 10th anniversary of Sonar - Rich wanted to do a 6-hour closing set at the Sonar Village at the CCCB (4-10) playing a 10-year retrospective. They refused and would only offer him his usual 2-hour banging set at night. G. That would've been kickass. - Greg
RE: (313) a couple of threads...
Just to clarify: *Colin Dale [one 'l' in the first name; uk pronounciation ;-) - (also?) had a show on Kiss 100 FM from about 1998 until about 2000 (IIRC). *Kiss was a legal station by then. The show was on late pm Tuesday into early am Wednesday (again, someone pls correct me if I err.). (I'm not sure abt any show he might have had on Kiss before it was legal.) When it got pulled - the whole rationale at the time was that Mr C's Saturday night-into early Sunday morning show (still much healthier than sleeping pills) was to replace not only Dale's show, but quite a few other programmes on Kiss which were meant to represent slightly more underground dance music than one would get in Kiss prime time slots. And doesn't he do it well?!? k -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, May 06, 2003 3:30 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) a couple of threads... there was Collin Dale, Abstrakt Dance? Peven is first an hip-hop RB artist. Sometimes I even swear its Stevie Wonder singing, like on You Are To Me, a beautiful samba styled ballad Although, I'm not disputing that PE has ever done hip-hop, I myself have never heard any. Most people know him (and have done for up to 20 years) as a multi-instrumentalist jazz musician. One thing we can all agree on is that most of us would do well to learn more abt this extraordinary talent. http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/urban/reviews/peven_confessions.shtml http://www.junkmedia.org/?i=379 Some specially recorded clips: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/urban/peterson/020926_peven.shtml

mp3, wav, and aac(advanced audio codec) which is part of the mpeg4 spec. It is not apple's format. MPEG-4 AAC has been specified as the high-quality general audio coder for 3G wireless terminals, Apple Computer has incorporated MPEG-4 AAC into QuickTime 6, and the Digital Radio Mondiale system, the next-generation digital replacement for radio broadcasting under 30 MHz, builds on the audio coding of MPEG-4 AAC. These exciting platforms represent the state of the art in audio coding, and Via Licensing is pleased to offer the MPEG-4 AAC Patent License Agreement. The MPEG-4 AAC standard incorporates MPEG-2 AAC, forming the basis of the MPEG-4 audio compression technology for data rates above 32 kbps per channel. Additional tools increase the effectiveness of MPEG-2 AAC at lower bit rates, and add scalability or error resilience characteristics. These additional tools extend AAC into its MPEG-4 incarnation (ISO/IEC 14496-3, Subpart 4). http://www.vialicensing.com/products/mpeg4aac/standard.html http://www.dolby.com/company/is.ot.0011.TechOverview.03.html http://www.apple.com/mpeg4/aac/ http://www.apple.com/mpeg4/ On Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at 14:35 Atlantic/Reykjavik, Grammenos, Peter wrote: yes they store wave, mp3, and an apple format. Ho Maarten, No idea about the compilation, but I just grabbed a copy of the Journey Home EP from Sonic Groove records in NYC for $25. I haven't come across it anywhere and from my understanding, it's one of the rarer 12's. Re: (313) iPod pictures (that work)
AAC sounds better than mp3 at a lower bitrate so 196 would probably be equivalent to 256 mp3s. AAC has native support in the Ipod too. Vorbis excels at 64-128 but I wouldnt want to archive my music that way. One of the devs is working on improving higher bit rates, I think its called GT3 or something but its still in beta and development has slowed at least according to the folks at hydrogen audio.
