Yes, that's right, and it is pretty useless unless you get it regularly in the UK. 7 flirted with a monthly format, then went under. Michael.Elliot-Knight Can't see the answer to this, sorry if I'm repeating. 7 is a sort of weekly UK Mixmag - the same guy who had the orginal idea for Mixmag (before it was sold to EMAP) started 7. I think he had to sell 7 last year - although he's still involved - as sales weren't as good as hoped. I believe it's still being published. I've never read a copy - although I read the item on Octave One, online. k

Re: (313) sturmey archer mix set #4
yeah, they start a new sub label, more techno/house read an article about it on the previous Jockey Slut magazine oh yeah...i read that, i wish my memory was a bit better :) The sub-label is called Arcola - there was a feature on it in DJ magazine a few weeks back. There are 12 releases coming from Dub Kult, Brothomstates, Louis Digital, Oris Jay and others I believe... arcola...that's it... i'm looking forward to the luis digital release (hmmm actually that's probs on the sublabel init?) It is... anyone heard that? or anything on the new label?? One of the Louis Digital tracks was previously released on his Footwork label I think - can't remember which one though. Also check out http://www.footworkrecords.com if you haven't already... right, ok. i have the footwork releases (anyone who doesn't should check em out...stuff that sits between techno, house and rb)... speaking of footwork they're due something out soon...can't wait (the clips on the site sound promising) robin...

Re: (313) those moxie things
Was that a regular release? I bought a white label dub of Once In A Lifetime in San Fransisco a while back, but all it says on the record is TALKING HEADS. It was two sided dif version each side. I just bought a Depeche Mode dub here in Chicago, it has a red label, and somebody wrote Depeche Mode on it. I think these kind of edits are extremely useful in a set, someday I will get FS and make my own edits... BTW, that Akufen remix of the Thomas Dolby song about the submarine is REALLY great in my opinion. Re: (313) those moxie things
BTW, that Akufen remix of the Thomas Dolby song about the submarine is REALLY great in my opinion. I might have to end a mix CD with it. The original has always been one of my favorite tunes - Dolby was always looked over as a one hit wonder with She Blinded Me with Science but his album The Flat Earth is amazingly textured and without the tune Hyperactive! I think it would have sunk without much notice (until years later probably). It really did seem to be going against the general trend of music made for videos instead of the opposite. I put him right up there with Kate Bush, The Art of Noise, and David Sylvian. Speaking of the Art of Noise - if I hear one more attempt to cover or remix Moments in Love I'll scream. How many crap trance or progressive house versions does it take before people realize that the song is perfect the way it is. Re: (313) Re: Thomas Dolby was Re: those moxie things
go to his website - quite entertaining read this here: http://www.thomasdolby.com/index_frameset.html I sent out demos to anyone I knew that was remotely connected, and scoured the want-ads in the back of 'Melody Maker'. Eventually I hooked up with a guy called Bruce Woolley who impressed me a lot with his smooth vocals, hooky songs, and most of all, his record contract with CBS. I joined his band The Camera Club and we set about designing wild space cadet stage outfits and learning to do eye makeup. We made an album which included my first ever published co-written compositions. Sadly, we were a little overshadowed by Bruce's former bandmates The Buggles who had a worldwide smash hit single 'Video Killed the Radio Star' out, which Bruce co-wrote. Plus, our New Romantic image was about two years ahead of its time, because shortly after we broke up people like Duran Duran started to sell millions doing basically the same thing. Just ordered this record... Is it as good as one would expect based on everything else that KDJ has put out? Better? I think it's one of his best. Yeah it's that good. I really think he's hitting a second stride of his career, the productions are just getting better and better, more electronic but just as deep. I will always love the early KDJ sound too, the low-fi applause and old soul samples in it, really rough. But this moves him into more of a futuristic direction to my ears, but it's still conceptual and moody/moving and deep as hell too. This is the best Moodymann thing he's done in awhile IMHO... there is little else out there that sounds quite like this, he's breaking more ground with this release moreso than in the recent past. I know this sounds corny but if you are a prince fan, this (to me) conjures up some of the same feelings as prince 'Around the World in a Day' LP when I first heard it... the whole concept thing.. Condition of the Heart, etc.. OF course the music sounds very different but it takes you up and down through a similar series of moods. Peace, Matt MacQueen

Yea' I just got this too and I think it'll be doing a lot of damage around the clubs here in NYC. Anyone else hear some 'Video Crash' on the A side? Also of note but not so 313 is the new Pepe Braddock...can't remember the title but search it out as well. +dave

well isnt he a fan of prince himself? Ha.. that's probably an understatement :) I thought I had a moodyman remix of a price track around here somewhere.. maybe in ny the critics love you or something like that I cant remember the track name You are probably thinking of the doublepack of U Can Dance If U Want 2 (KDJ 9) which is basically different jackin reconstructed versions of all the critics love U in new york (from the 1999 LP, circa '82 or '83)... amazing. Then there's the black JAN 12 that is the cut-up interview of the questions that Mojo asked prince on the air from a detroit radio interview. The connection is definitely there. Prince and Detroit is a STRONG connection to be sure. Has everyone read the interview where Mojo interviews Prince on the air? It's incredible.
(313) Mojo interviews Prince (1985)
Some trivia: -- THE ELECTRIFYING MOJO (1985) On the eve of his birthday in 1985, Prince gave a surprise interview to legendary Detroit disc jockey the Electrifying Mojo. He had never offered a live radio interview before. Of the experience, Mojo later said: I had no idea he was going to call. I had no list of questions or anything like that. First I talked to Billy Sparks and he said, 'Hey Mojo! Prince wants to talk to you. You got a minute?' I said, 'Do I have a minute? Give me a minute to make sure we have a tape on,' and Prince says, 'Hey Mojo! What's happening? This is Prince.' If I hadn't heard Billy Sparks' voice prior to that, I may have said, 'Yeah, right.' The following is the text of the spoken interview, as transcribed by Rose Gardner on the Emancipation mailing list. --- MOJO: This is the one-man hit machine from Minnesota. Ladies and Gentlemen...Prince. PRINCE: Hello, Detroit. MOJO: How are you? PRINCE: Alright, how are you? MOJO: Well, Prince... I heard nothing but magic flowin' down from the concert. How was it? PRINCE: Mmm, a lot of fun. You should've been there. MOJO: I was there in spirit. I wanted to be here for one reason...I wanted to be here, so that the moment that the concert was over...I wanted to flood the airwaves with Prince. PRINCE: Well, you know what? I was driving from the gig, wiping the sweat off my brow, and I heard Automatic. And we just got through playin' it...we don't normally play that one. It went over pretty good, and I think it's 'cuz of you, and what you've done for us and...my thang. It's a good feeling. I just wanna tell all my little motor babies that I'm just happy to be here...and it's a fun way to spend my birthday, for sure. MOJO: Happy Birthday to you. PRINCE: Thank you. MOJO: Prince, you've been the entertainer that has insisted on doing things one way...your way. PRINCE: Well, you know, it's like...I worked a long time under a lot of different people, and most of the time I was doing it their way. I mean, that was cool, but ya know, I figured if I worked hard enough and kept my head straight, one day I'd get to do this on my own...and that's what happened. So I feel like...if I don't try to hurt nobody...and like I say...keep my head on straight...my way usually is the best way. MOJO: Growin' up in Minne-wood, as it's been now called, simply because that is the hot point on this planet right now. PRINCE: Well, it's been called a lot of things, but it's always Uptown to me. MOJO: Uptown? PRINCE: Yes. MOJO: What was it like growin' up Uptown? PRINCE: Pretty different. Uh, kinda sad, to be exact. (laughs) I mean, the radio was dead, the discos was dead, ladies was kinda dead, so I felt like, if we wanted to make some noise, and I wanted to turn anything outI was gonna have to get somethin' together. Which is what we did. We put together a few bands and turned it into Uptown. That consisted of a lot of bike riding nude, but ya know...it worked. We had fun. That's why I wanted to come here on my birthday...'cuz I wanted to give them a little taste of where we live and get a little taste of where you all live. To me, this is like my second home. If I could spend the night at somebody's crib, I would...'cuz this hotel They're real nice to us, but, this bed is hard! MOJO: You've made fantastic albums, and you've made fantastic movies, and you're making another movie right now. PRINCE: Yeah. MOJO: What's the difference between making a hot movie and making a hot album? PRINCE: There is no difference. There have been people who have tried to tell me contrary to that, but like you said before and like I said before, I strive for perfection, and sometimes I'm a little bull-headed in my ways. Hopefully, people understand that there's just a lot on my mind and I try to stay focused on one particular thing. And I try not to hurt nobody in the process. A movie is a little bit more complex, but to me it's just a larger version of an album. There are scenes and there are songs, and they all go together to make this painting, and...I'm the painter. Y'all is the paintees. (Mojo laughs.) Hopefully it's something that you can get into. Jerome Benton stars in this new film with me and he's on his way to becoming very, very big. I'm real proud of him. He takes direction well and he gives direction well and I expect a lot of big things from him. MOJO: Speaking of Jerome Benton, and other people who've flown under the wings of Prince, and also speaking of Detroit's own Billy Sparks, a person that you took from Detroit, put him in your first movie... PRINCE: Yes. MOJO: You've always maintained contact with people that you've always been in contact with. PRINCE: Oh yeah. Without a doubt, there's people who have flown the coop, so to speak, and gone off to do their own thing, which is great and I stand behind them and support them, whatever they

at first i was kinda underwhelmed by the new album. seemed to kinda slip by, tracks blended together so smooth, it just didnt hit me. i thought, oh there's a couple nice tracks but overall..not that exciting..very much a lowkey listening album...on cd. but i prefer it on vinyl sooo much more! except it doesnt have that bit at the end of that one track with him mumbling stuff about the church.. I remember when derrick May was promoting that Vestax mixer with the frequency isolators, it also had built in samples and some type of Midi control, the samples were not that bad. Think Musique Non Stop and Emu SP-12. I never knew he had a hand in the Fine Young Cannibals she drivez meh craizeh hh... hh... must have been remix work. That's it - oh yeah, there is a really grainy photo of him as well. there are no albums listed, just one other photo (and its a better one but it's on another page), and the latest news is the DEMF line-up of 2000. Wow, thanks Rolling Stone for recognizing him (and just about any other techno artists as well). Quite a legacy I don't think they archive everything that's been published in their magazine from the last decade or so on their web site. Innovator was listed as one of the top 100 albums of the 90's, (or was it electronica albums of the 90's?) if it wasn't R.S. it might have been one of the other magazines like Spin. Carl Carig actually has some album reviews archived on the Rolling Stone web site. Meanwhile - type in Moby and you get: who care's about Moby? I never understood 313ers fascination with Moby. So, you tell me - is Derrick May recognized by Rolling Stone? I think from a historical techno or dance music perspective he will. When I hear the album Innovator it brings memories of 1989: Jeanette Thomas Shake Your Body, Steve Hurley Jack Your Body, Inner City Big Fun. Richie Hawtin is really responsible for making techno more popular in the US with Technarchy in 1990 that jump started the early 90's techno craze and got more of the laternative/ Industrial heads into the music. dance music may be mainstream but Detroit techno and Detroit techno artists are not. I no longer call the music coming out of Detroit techno it's 313 music. Detroit techno is ancient history. If you look on Billboard.com's Hot Dance Music/Club Play you get: 1. Becky Baeling 2. t.A.T.u. 3. Deborah Cox 4. The Roc Project feat. Tina Arena 5. Monica 6. Paul Van Dyk 7. Groove Armada feat. Sunshine Anderson 8. Whitney Houston 9. Jennifer Lopez 10. Jewel 11. Puretone 12. Murk 13. Justin Timberlake 14. Martin feat. Loleatta 15. Deborah Cooper 16. Laura Pausini 17. Jung feat. Hope 18. BT 19. Daniel Bedingfield 20. Madonna As a general rule you are not going to see independent label/ underground electronic music listed on the Billboard dance charts. It's generally music that is signed to major labels. I did see Cajmere on Relief in the Top 20 three or four months ago. by the way - I don't have an HMV or Virgin record store but we do have Sam Goody and they don't stock any CDs by any Detroit techno artists. They do have a lot of trance and Ibiza CDs. MEK I guess you live in a smaller market. I've seen most of the 313 mixed CD's at Virgin and HMV which have a better selection of dance music thatn the smaller chains. Speaking of chains, I used to see a lot of the Chain Reaction, Basic Channel comps back in the late 90's and many of the Detroit techno albums. Last time I was in NYC I bought the Like A Tim albums on Geist and the Trax 3XCD compilation at Virgin. =
