Re: (313) kinda interesting
There is bad business to a large extent but I think downloading has some effect. People will always take the free option regardless. I think with commercial albums a large part of it is the lack of AR guidance. So many times you get an album with one or two decent songs. The Beyonce album broke my heart - after reading that interview in Vibe it sounded like she would do something really interesting, but then it's generic. Somewhere along the line they compromised the vision. Ironically the best urban albums this year like Floetry's don't sell. Another article blaming Internet downloading for lowering of sales of the Record industry, when a lot of it is just bad business on Record labels end, and not knowing their fan bases. Why does an LP(album) cost $10 and the same CD (album) costs $15, when it is cheaper for the CD to be made then the record. Ringtones are quicker, cheaper and downloadable. Maybe if they made their music catalogs the same, they migh see the same effect. Actually I think Hell said something like that but in a more upbeat way. I don't mind it. It's harmless. I think scenes can co-exist. you never know it could be what a declining american scene needs, a booster shot form a rap superstar? lol Or the final nail in the coffin. Only time will tell. Dave

Yeah, it's definitely not the movie - but as Stewart said the same sample is used in Lexicon Avenue's tech-house track 'From Dusk Til Dawn', from 2001 - so 51 Days and Lexicon Avenue must both have sampled it from somewhere else... (313) OT - where should I live?
Hi folks, With the summer coming to a close and no steady employment presenting itself here in Berlin, I'm probably going to be heading back to the US in the next couple months. But where? (313) Stacey Pullen or Derrick May??
Is it just me or does the track listed on the first Transmat comp cd as the collaboration between May and Hillage sound awfully similar to (or just a stripped down version of) Stacey Pullen's Vertigo? The track on the cd comp almost sounds like the beats-only Mayday Mix of vertigo, as the System 7 Mix of Mysterious Traveller on the vinyl sampler sounds completely different than this one. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated, on or offlist. Cheers, Wojtek

Re: (313) kinda interesting
Well, there are also a lot of vinyl records that are more expensive than the cd, I think most of these extra costs comes from the artwork. What I dislike is the fact that on a cd there are often more songs or other songs than on the vinyl version. Why do they do that? That you buy both? Or is that just the limited space on vinyl? Well, then make it a double or triple!!! Remco

Re: (313) kinda interesting
What I dislike is the fact that on a cd there are often more songs or other songs than on the vinyl version. Why do they do that? That you buy both? Or is that just the limited space on vinyl? Well, then make it a double or triple!!! Often there will be more songs on the CD, as you rightly mention. I don't think that people do it so that you buy both formats. I think it has more to do with the amount of minutes of music, while still getting a reasonable pressing that you are limited to with vinyl. (as against production cost). For example, I had a little moan recently because both the new Pavel Koustick and Andres LP's are both on single vinyl. But - that one piece of single vinyl with cover etc will have cost far more to manufacture than the CD, and the label will still receive less or the same amount from the distributor for that unit. Basically there's no incentive whatsoever to make that a double LP - therefore you have to lose some tracks (due to only having 2 sides to play with), simple as that, and there's your reason.. Which brings me on to something else entirely. Believe me, I am the biggest record junkie I know - I have to have things on vinyl, or original press etc - but I don't see why we should all be so scared of what will happen after vinyl - I see reguarly on this list that people are quick to jump on peoples back when, for example Erick Morillo said that vinyl was a dying format. I mean, its harsh, but unfortunately there is truth in it. Of course, there will always be vinyl collectors of our generation around, and vinyl will never 'die' as such, but will become a more and more obsolete format, just as 78's are now. But there's still a healthy 78's trade going on right? I just find it really surprising that we're all on this list because we think we like forward thinking music - but we're all so SCARED of vinyl 'dying'. Why? Whats the point? OK, the new format won't be the same, but you can bet money that you'll be able to manipulate it in far better ways, and it will be cheaper to maufacture, therefore keeping the 'underground' alive, if not making it far bigger. and this, from the biggest fu**ing record junkie in the world - ask anyone who works in a record shop in Manc. : ) _ - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers. OK, the new format won't be the same, but you can bet money that you'll be able to manipulate it in far better ways, and it will be cheaper to maufacture, therefore keeping the 'underground' alive, if not making it far bigger. Well, the reasoning for me is simple. I don't believe that the industry has come up with a more convincing media for recorded music as yet. The sound of a well recorded piece of vinyl is just so much better than I've ever heard a cd come near to. I've also heard SACD and the like and still prefer analogue - it's just more convincing on 'real' instruments. A high level of vinyl reply isn't cheap, and really cds were really designed to give better sound quality at lower a price point. It's funny to find many people discovering the sound of vinyl for the first time, and there is now an increasing 'audiophile' vinyl market growing. Without the mass DJ market, this smaller market may not have been able to exist as many pressing plants etc. would have had to close down. That's why I'm scared of vinyl dying. New technologies are more designed around the economics of the product, rather than how it sounds which to me is the wrong way round.

I would second that...I lived in Montreal for 5 years and it was fantastic. The only thing is that sometimes the politics can be a bit hard to deal with - language wars, and the winters are damn cold. And if you don't speak french it can be hard to get work. But, on the positive side, its like living in a wicked European city only you are in North America. The people are hip, the music scene is supportive, tight and prolific, and housing is cheap. Re: (313) kinda interesting
downloading undoubtedly has a negative effect on music sales, but there's no doubt that it has a possitive effect either. the recording industry has in my opinion been whining way too long about the negative effects, instead of using the possitive effects, and making the negative effects work in their advantage. or like number 14 uses to say: there's an advantage to every disadvantage. on the other hand there are more reasons why you can still not easily download songs of a website, like you can with ringtones. one of them is the way the musicmarket works: the recordingcompany does not sell it's product directly to the consumer, it sells it's product to retailers, who in turn sell it to the public. there have been attempts by the major recordingcompanies, to offer some of their catalog to the public through the internet, but they faced repercussions by their 'customers' the retailers, whom, out of fear of loosing their bussiness, decided not to buy music from that recordcompany any more. as music sales in cd's cassettes etc. was still the main source of income for these recordcompanies, they could not afford to loose their bussiness on one side, to gain a still uncertain new market. i've read a somewhat interesting book about the development of the music-industry from the development of the internet to where it is now. unfortunately it didn't give any thoughts on the [possible] future, but still an interesting read. i've got it somewhere at home, if anyone's interested i could look it up, just let me know. apart from that i think that setting up a working mp3 distribution, is not an easy thing to do. i've been thinking about it a lot, but there are so many different aspects you'll have to considder. for instance: one person could copy your distribution network, buy all his mp3's at your site, and then sell them for half the price on his own site. dunno why cd's are as expensive as they are; i think i a cd-album costs something like 21 euro's [about $23] right now in the netherlands [not sure, can't even remember the last time i bought a cd...] whereas a vinyl-album will cost you somewhere between 19 to 28 euro's [about $20-30] you could say that 90% of the cd shop are located in the center of town, so will therefore will have to pay more rent, resulting in higher costs, which will reflect in the price of the product. jurren for all dutch speaking peeps on here, here's a site of a dutch law-firm that's got an excellent blog, where they keep up with all internet related cases. they're representing kazaa amongst others: http://www.solv.nl _ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. RE: (313) kinda interesting
Im still surprised that people say this - don't get me wrong I love vinyl but surely the noise introduced alone through the vinyl/needle/coil mechanism must far defeat the advatages of no digital noise / aliasing and reduction of harmonics ?? You won't find inspiration in Croydon, maybe negative inspiration. Yet Stewart's appraisal of the Manhattan of the South, whilst factually correct, does miss the point that you can live on the fringes of London, enjoy all it's cultural benefits, fly anywhere in the world (superb transport links - all major airports in London are less than 1 hour away), and not have to pay the rent that comes with living in the centre of the capital itself. If a like minded guy on this list, who happens incidently to make some superb techno music, wants to ask other like minded people where he should move to then what is the problem with that? Most threads will veer slightly OT and become something of a chatting session amongst friends, especially when the weather is this hot and people are bored and hot at work. SO what, theres more to an Internet newsgroup than just simple sharing relevant news, its also a community and as such people are gonna shoot the sh!t with eachother. SO what, theres more to an Internet newsgroup than just simple sharing relevant news, its also a community and as such people are gonna shoot the sh!t with eachother. If you dont like it I suggest you filter your email to block any message that clearly states OT in the subject. Simple! Re: (313) Alexander Kowalski's (was RE: (313) thanks, y'all)
yeah, I can recommend both of Kowalski's albums - 'echoes' and 'progress', echos reminds me a lot of purposemaker style techno, progress has better productions, but IMHO the vocal tracks are very weak. however the collaboration album 'reasons' with Denis and Diego is even better one of my favourite albums of last year. oh, and the kowalski remix of agoria's 'la 11eme marche' is also fantastic. I was wondering what list members think of agoria - I've heard 'la 11eme marche' in a number of very different clubs - from a warehouse party to a nasty little club here in southampton, it sounded very cheesy in the bad club and very powerful in the warehouse so I had to grab the vinyl :) they did a v.nice mix cd 'circle room three turn' that has a lot of 313 related tracks including some transmat material IIRC - was really impressed by it. matt :) . (313) Looking for record stores in Alberta
Hi all, This is probably a long shot, but... is there anyone on here who knows of the independent record stores in Edmonton, AB, Canada that sell techno/db/rap etc. , or of anyone you could put me in touch with someone who might know? I'm trying to help my mom with an electronic music project for the kids in her school in the fall and it would help if I could tell them where to go to get this stuff besides HMV! Thanks for any help you can offer. Berg

(313) Cool Trevor Horn quote...
Hello, I happened to be in my local Oxfam shop and found an old Sound On Sound from August 1994, containing interviews with Trevor Horn and FSOL, the latter with great pictures of their kit at the time. Anyway, this quote from the Trevor Horn interview inspired me, following on from the 80s-flavoured conversations of late... quote With The Buggles we didn't actually have much gear at all, just a Minipops Junior -- one of those little rhythm boxes. But when I got going as a producer, and did ABC's Lexicon Of Love album, I put together a little rig that consisted of a [Roland] TR808 -- with triggers put on the side by Dave Simmons of Simmons drums -- a Mini Moog with CV gates on it, a set of Simmons drum modules, and a very strange Roland sequencer which in essence acted just like a playlist; you'd just bang a list of notes into it -- you know, 10 As, four Bs and a B-flat! I just used to drive the whole thing from the TR808, with a cowbell triggering the synth, and a combination of the TR808 and the Simmons comprising the drums. It was a very effective little system, and I did most of the ABC album with it, as well as the Dollar records. It was almost like painting by numbers -- the drummer and I would programme the track and lay that down first, and then he'd play on top of it and we'd take it away. /quote How techno is that setup? It's definitely inspired me to check out his output, with that much cool thinking going into the sound. It turns out that the interview is online, in case anyone wants to read it, at: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/1994_articles/aug94/trevorhorn.html Hope this isn't too off-topic? F*ck it, just press delete. Cheers, Andrew PS. The SOS website has some great interviews, it's good if you want to get under the skin of some great producers and electronic artists.

Throw a 'richie hawtin isn't underground anymore' or a 'pop culture is below me' at the end real quick here ok. speaking of being more 313 related, I seem to be having trouble posting this, and it is definitely is list-related, so here :) The track listed on the first Transmat comp cd as the collaboration between May and Hillage sounds awfully similar to (or just a stripped down version of) Stacey Pullen's Vertigo? The track on the cd comp almost sounds like the beats-only Mayday Mix of vertigo, as the System 7 Mix of Mysterious Traveller on the vinyl sampler sounds completely different than this one. (did they perhaps collaborate?) Any clarification would be greatly appreciated, on or offlist. Thanks in advance, Wojtek

(313) philly
i sent an email a while back about philly but unfortunately deleted the response. i'm going to philly for labor day weekend (8.27-8.31) and am looking for house/techno spots. the deeper the better. thanks! lks
Re: (313) philly
well, I'm not gonna be very useful, by saying that there will be 2 deep/minimal techno events on sept 3 and sept 6... - wednesday sept 3: SmartyPants (Traum) + Greg Shiff (Persona), both playing LIVE, at Hologram (it's at La Tazza, 108 chestnut st), brought to you by http://www.tbtmo.com - saturday sept 6: Algorithm (Jeff Milligan), playing at PitchSpork (with local support by Pneuma, Sean O'Neal and DJ Kate), a new monthly party happening at Silk City (5th and SpringGarden), brought to you by the soon-to-be-born new minimal tek label out of philly (more on that later) I'm afraid you won't find anything deep/minimal techno-ish during your dates, but you can check out a listing of weekly events at http://www.citypaper.net, and easily find deephouse events (soma is usually a good place to go). check out for stuffs happening at the 215 spot, it's a new bar with techno events sometimes; cheers, sylvain http://www.dreamlabrecords.com/DreamLabzFM.htm http://www.bastardjazz.com Lester Kenyatta Spence wrote: i sent an email a while back about philly but unfortunately deleted the response. i'm going to philly for labor day weekend (8.27-8.31) and am looking for house/techno spots. the deeper the better. thanks! lks
Re: (313) philly
i heart philly. not sure of any deep/minimal events either. bt sometimes the 700 club is a good spot and also check out Chris's in center city for jazz. In addition to city paper (that formentioned DJ, Sean Oneill does their listings) also check out philadelphiaweekly.com. have a great time in an awesome town. d --- Cyhl [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: well, I'm not gonna be very useful, by saying that there will be 2 deep/minimal techno events on sept 3 and sept 6... - wednesday sept 3: SmartyPants (Traum) + Greg Shiff (Persona), both playing LIVE, at Hologram (it's at La Tazza, 108 chestnut st), brought to you by http://www.tbtmo.com - saturday sept 6: Algorithm (Jeff Milligan), playing at PitchSpork (with local support by Pneuma, Sean O'Neal and DJ Kate), a new monthly party happening at Silk City (5th and SpringGarden), brought to you by the soon-to-be-born new minimal tek label out of philly (more on that later) I'm afraid you won't find anything deep/minimal techno-ish during your dates, but you can check out a listing of weekly events at http://www.citypaper.net, and easily find deephouse events (soma is usually a good place to go). check out for stuffs happening at the 215 spot, it's a new bar with techno events sometimes; cheers, sylvain http://www.dreamlabrecords.com/DreamLabzFM.htm http://www.bastardjazz.com Lester Kenyatta Spence wrote: i sent an email a while back about philly but unfortunately deleted the response. i'm going to philly for labor day weekend (8.27-8.31) and am looking for house/techno spots. the deeper the better. thanks! lks __ Do you Yahoo!?
