(313) Minimal recommendations

2003-09-04 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi folks,

It looks like I'll be heading to Cologne on Saturday. This came up only
yesterday when an ex-colleague asked me to drive along.

I'm really excited to be able to go to Kompakt again, but since I'll have
limited time I was wondering if some of you could give me some recommandations
for nice minimal stuff. I'm talking about the more funky, punchy, bleepy
screepy stuff, think Daniel Bell (own stuff and mixcd's), Akufen, Safety
Scisors,...

I've never been into online record shopping so I have no clue whether there are
sites where I could hear some samples of a variety of these records?

All advise much appreciated. Thanks in advance,

John

the whole thing myself, but here's a Google translation (I love how it
translates Tresor litterally):

Hipp Hipp Hurrah!!!
The safe deposit is from today on again opened for evening!!!

The town councillor could not recognize a sufficient proof situation,
the one locking of the club would have justified and thus this morning
an immediate reopening of the safe deposit agreed. The file inspection
showed that it einen(!) Denunzianten gave, who - there at present in the

our lawyer wrote in addition (excerpt):
a shelter with larger quantities drug, from which could have been

The reproach against the safe deposit to act with illegal substances is
naturally completely ridiculous. If the police wants to solve seriously
a drug problem, which exists obviously in all other social classes, then
it should spend their energy and our tax fundses rather to co-operate
with the offices, drug advisory boards and naturally and also with the

The Detroit Beatdown remixes 12 on Third Ear is great - Gilb-R's 'Solo

pretty good.

hmm new to me records:

Jeff Mills - the divine ep - purposemaker

jeff in the mode i like best, techno but not abrasive. changes of life
(reprise) hints at the original but never gets there but instead plows a
solid 313 tech furrowreach is good on here too (in two flavorsthe
instrumental builds and has less of the bass), sounding a bit moodymann in
a funny kinda way...(off key pianos sitting nicely in the mix)

EPOD - the persuit - cocomachete

best mix of the track is the coco dubhouse with an organic feel with
some male spoken vocal in itthis just plain rocks. as does the other
ep i've got from cocomachetemust track down more of their output as
they arehitting the spot for mealways seem to have a brennan green mix
on these things but i never normally dig that feel.

raheem hershel - gotta have the pokey - creme

chicago jacking business in a trax waycombined with the normal sounds
you get off the more elctro-disco stuff u normally see on this label. not
a classic release as you could build this stuff on trax samples, but solid
nontheless.

shake - convalescence - frictional

wicked 12 with nice hip-hop instrumental from shake on one side. the
killer cut on this is the soundhack mix on the other side of like a
dream, medium paced techno of the highest order with some of the
choppiness you'd expect from soundhack but not over the top, begging for
doubles!

that's about it for now

This is a bit of a begging mail for your help, as many UK and European
techno-heads will know, the boys at Overload have decided to call it a day -
this site has I believe been vital in it's support of electronic music over
the years and to lose the hard work and people would be a big blow to us
all, I've lost count of the number of records and clubs I've visited because
of this site :)

So, the boys and girls at DUST have stepped in and have offered to continue
the work the boys at Overload started. The site will run on it's own with
dust playing no other part than paying the bills...

We have a new URL, Loads of disk space and enough bandwidth to almost be
pornographic! The format of the site will pretty much stay as it is, but if
you have any new ideas, please shout.

We'll have:

I'm looking for help on writing reviews of gigs and records, and of course
people to support the site by joining and posting.

V1 of the site will be available next week, if you are interested in joining
or helping support this project please drop me a line.

Many thanks in advance

Fair play, Martin.
Overload has certainly been responsible for revitalising my interest in
electronic music and, especially, in clubbing, so you can rely on my support on
the forum - I hope it won't be a carbon copy of OL though?

Overload deserve respect for helping make the club scene in London and the rest
of the UK a lot more varied and interesting, so many thanks to Ali Wade and Dan
Woodruffe for their dedication and enthusiasm over the last couple of years. It
will be interesting to see what they come up with next.

(313) Re: Stockholm ...

2003-09-04 Thread Jesper Kling
Hi

Three good ones in Stockholm this weekend:

Aril Brikha is playing live at Guidelines @ Mondo (tube Medborgarplatsen) on
Saturday. Open from 11 pm to 3 am.

Maurice Fulton is playing at my club Raw Fusion @ Mosebacke (tube Slussen)
on Saturday. Open from 9 to 2 am.

If you want some electronic sounds on Friday, go to the small bar Metro
(tube Skanstull). Open until 2 am.

Best record shops at the moment are:

Snickars Records @ Replsagargatan - 2nd hand techno, house and disco. Also
nice selection of hip hop, soul and odd sounds.

Recordmania @ Östgötagatan - one of the best 2nd hand shops in Europe. No
techno, only soul, disco, jazz, reggae, hip hop and a small selection of new
sounds.

Fade @ Skånegatan - new house, d'n'b, techno and more.

Good luck

Jesper

Chad Hugo is fully into electronic music, he knows his music like
nobody,
The Neptunes is an equal partnership but most people recognise Pharrell.
Chad is into Depeche Mode and used to collect Plus 8 stuff and concocts
amazing beats. You can hear him on the new Bryan Zentz album playing
sax,
too, and Bryan gets props in the Clones credits. Chad is probably my
 biggest
hero outside of techno/house at the moment, him and Pharrell. Pharrell's
Frontin' is my single of the year. I just love the chord changes and the
spacy arrangement and jazz feel. I wish Carl Craig could remix it. The
  Clones album is total genius.

I knew I'd heard it recently, but didn't realize this was
Neptunes-related.
Cheerist I need to follow-up on some of those Neptues proddings I keep
getting. At any rate, the reason for my post is that the 5th Yam Who
record
is a re-edit of Frontin' and it sounds bad as hell from the online
audio.
Should have it in my mits tomorrow for a full review. For those who have
heard the other Yam Who's, I can see the drool rolling down your chins
 already. Act quickly!

Yep. That's a good one! The first re-edit he did of N'Dambi's 'Call Me' is
great as well. The others I've not picked up although they sounded nice.

I don't think that if anyone knows who (s)he is that they would say. (S)he
seems to be intentionally quite secretive. The releases are getting a bit

Re: (313) Brinkmann set

2003-09-04 Thread Don Licatalosi
In my opinion, it would be very difficult to recommend the best of the
series, since there is quite a bit of variation between releases, and
personal tastes may vary a lot. I believe the whole set spans the alphabet,
so there should be 13 releases, but I've never seen Q/R. I have 10 of
them, and would have to say that olga/petra, anna/beate, wanda/xenia, are
some that stick out, but there are choice cuts on almost every release. The
Rosa CD might be the way to go to sample the different tracks, or you could
try the groovetech.com and nuloop.com sites- some of the releases are there
with audio samples.
Speaking of the Rosa CD, is this a mixed set?
Good luck,
Don

Subject: (313) BRITISH MURDER BOYS LIVE @ T-FUNKSHUN FRIDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER

 T-funkshun Fri Sept 12th:
 British Murder Boys Live
 SURGEON REGIS
 +
 SCOTT NOCTURNE
 DAVID LAWTON

Well we have looked at the theatre in Masque many times and thought that a
live set would truly do it justice and finally we have the perfect
offering.

He's back and bringing a friend. After his unstoppable set at T-funkshun,
that he loved so much, we are proud to announce that Surgeon is returning
and bringing Regis too for what promises to be one of the finest nights we
have had at Masque and that is saying something.

Regis, one of the best producers in techno of the last decade, brings his
sound (and verbal) to team up with his old cohort. Myself and David Lawton
will provide our own special blend of warm-up for the proceedings..

THIS IS AN ALLNIGHTER TOO. We have an after-party in a warehouse just
around
 the corner.

 Tickets available for £9 at:

 and selected record shops

Re: (313) The Neptunes Yam Who

2003-09-04 Thread Tom Churchill
I don't think that if anyone knows who (s)he is that they would say. (S)he
seems to be intentionally quite secretive. The releases are getting a bit
more attention these days, which may be the reason for the secrecy.

Well I'll blow his cover then :) According to the peeps on the 4hero board
it's Andy Williams from Reckless Records:

Personally I think the Yam Who edits are way over-rated, and I haven't
bought any of them, but they certainly seem to be getting a lot of
attention...

Cheers,

Tom
