(313) Outkast Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
How good is this album? I read that Andre 3000 considers music in Europe to be more cutting-edge than the US, and is into Aphex Twin and so on. They sooo need to play Movement.
Re: (313) Outkast Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
There is no way that this album won't impact the more dance-dedicated strain of electronic music, and intensely if justice there be. But I think it's important to find out: does Shake like it? I see the label bio uses the word 'techno' appropriately too. It's good to know that urban acts like The Roots - esp ?uestlove - are giving recognition to US electronic musicians too. I think Roots (Phrenology), Common, NERD and OutKast are exploding the category of urban. It's so exciting. I can't believe Andre 3000 played so much of the instrumentation on The Love Below either. I think this is my album of the year. -- From: Data General [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Outkast Speakerboxxx/The Love Below Date: Tue, 14 Oct 2003 3:04 PM There is no way that this album won't impact the more dance-dedicated strain of electronic music, and intensely if justice there be. Pls permit me to add one more which I've remembered from my first hour: Amp Fiddler - This Is How (Genuine). (313) Techno: Detroit's Gift To The World
A friend of mine recently travelled to Florida, with a stopover in Detroit. An interesting tidbit appeared on the confirmation email he received after booking the flight: FLIGHT RESERVATION Northwest Airlines NW 31 Monday, October 6, 2003 From London / Gatwick (LGW), London United Kingdom 1:50 PM Terminal: S snipped Local events: » Techno: Detroit''s Gift to the World » Motown Historical Museum » The Henry Ford Museum Greenfield Village » The Bat Zone Seems as though at least one US company knows what time it is! Re: (313) rolando mix/ interview on Radio1
Informed Choice Fergie met his untimely end, he was informed that he had a choice about where he would spend his eternity: Heaven or Hell. He was allowed to visit both places, and then make his decision afterwards. I'll see Heaven first, said the Fergie, and an angel led him through the gates on a private tour. Inside it was very peaceful and serene, and all the people there were playing harps and eating grapes. It looked very nice, but Fergie was not about to make a decision that could very well condemn him to so sedate an eternity. Can I see Hell now? he asked. The angel pointed him to the elevator, and he went down to the Basement where he was greeted by one of Satan's loyal followers. For the next half hour, Fergie was led through a tour of what appeared to be the best night clubs he'd ever seen. People were partying loudly, and having a, if you'll pardon the expression, Hell of a time. When the tour ended, he was sent back up where the angel asked him if he had reached a final decision. Yes, I have, he replied. As great as Heaven looks and all, I have to admit that Hell was more of my kind of place. I've decided to spend my eternity down there. Fergie was sent to hell, where he was immediately thrown into a cave and was chained to a wall, and he was subjected to various tortures. When I came down here for the tour, he yelled with anger and pain, I was shown a whole bunch of bars and parties and other great stuff! What happened?! The devil replied, Oh, that! Funky 101 with a truckload of Soul and rhythms. : ) Wait till you hear the new Iridite my friends... YEEHAAAW! Dr. Nutcracker

-- Original Message -- From: FC2 Richards [EMAIL PROTECTED] YOU ARE CRAZY IF YOU DON'T LIKE ANDRE'S DISC... Big Boi will always be the more mainstreal rapper, and Andre will always be more experimental. thats funny, i dont see anything experimental about andre's disc. i just see weakness fronting on being fresh but it just sounds boring. i mean really my main complaint with outkast has been their attempts to please mainstream white media by being the weird black rappers. i like that big boi knows his strengths enough to still be different, but not just for difference's sake. there was a really good article in the nytimes http://www.nytimes.com/2003/10/05/arts/music/05SANN.html?8hpib comparing the recent output of outkast and erykah badu, and they hit the nail on the head as far as im concerned. erykah's album crushes the outkast joint, its not even close, and its mainly because i feel like she wasnt trying to impress anyone in making it. anyway, outkast were undeniably better when andre wasnt wearing feather boas and acting like a fool. do you even remember the player's ball or elevators? elevators will smash anything theyve done before or since it.. p.s. I had no idea that Kurt Cobain was ever cool...they weren't even a good punk band... thats because they werent really a punk band. this isnt the place to discuss this topic, but if you heard nirvana and thought punk band then you either dont know what punk sounds like, or you didnt actually listen to nirvana. if anything they were like a combination of indie rock's songwriting with punk's attitude and metal's power, hardly a good example of a punk band. tom andythepooh.com

aahhh..wutsup doc! :P yeah i'm anxious to get the two new headspaces! sounds like 2 gems dropped at once... and i have the new arne on technoir but havent gotten to listen to it yet.. iridite 4 is dope too! i think my two favorite tracks on there are the ones by marco bernardi (chugging deep techno, much deeper and better than he is known for previously i'm told..is hot!) and the poke (coming off like juan circa skynet, lovely) i also just got these: luckyeasy - pimp soul blister (ann aimee #3) -- nceee!! the a-side is a 11 minute track that mutates several times, is really more like 3 or 4 tracks...starts out with a great classic sounding swingy detroit bit, then a more spaced-out housey bit, then more idm-y/electro-y, very cool, nice journey...i really love that beginning especially, not far off from strand stuff!...b1 is a hazy idm-hiphop thing with some nice quiet growling sounds and lovely very soft strings and muffled melodic bits...very serene and laidback, but very nice. b2 is another mix of idm with hiphop and even a little bit of hip-house sounding beats, its pretty out there..more towards cim and previous luckyeasy i think, nice again... mos - goddess / razor (mos 001) -- more brilliant, classic sounding stuff from mos!...a-side has a short little intro of a bubbling delaying melody ala juan, followed by goddess which is all swirling deep pads and simple housey bassline, nice hats...very nice, but honestly not one of my favorite mos tracks. but the b-side brings razor which is one of my very favorite mos tracks...has that amazing bleak but warm but tense feeling of mos best stuff, little portamantoed chirps and yelps...brilliant, beautiful...it's kinda sleepy, but at the same time tense and exciting. just the most lovely mood. yeah. i love mos . then there's a short outro of beautiful undulating strings/pads.. starfighterz - 4 flavors of a 2 sided story pt1 (delsin) -- oh flavor 1 is pefect deep broken beat techno, sounding remarkably like old dan curtin..really really good!! beautiful sounds and melodies, this really brings back memories...flavor 4 on the b-side is not as creative or personal sounding to my ears, more of a familiar deep techno groove...reminds me a little of dimension 5 stuff...very nice, but hard to match the creativity and sharpness of flavor 1...great record tho! lovely enki bilal label art too ;) i'm way late to comment on these but oh well: jon slocum - upstairs at derrick's (mout-1) -- great first release on mout, side a is a 15 minute minimal epic, playing with an arpeggio, ascending/descending pink/white noise bursts, and eventually some nice meandering live-played pitchbending pads/chords...sorta reminds of old rob hood, but it has a bit more looseness and rawness, lovely...side b is equally great, a bubbling low-slung pretty drexciyan (the chords!) jam, real nice loose and live feeling again...dark and plodding beats and bass (808 cowbells and sticks making it kinda playful tho too) set off against lovely jazzy chords, very personal and creative..essential record i think! not at all what i was expecting given the electronic punkfunk description, which makes me think of hard-to-listen-to (imo) stuff like maurice fulton and dfa etc..this is way more soulful and deep to my ears, and just sounds like very funky, creative house techno to me... yotoko - all creation remix ep (delsin) -- o mannn...this record might be what makes me officially a broken beat fan...the all creation remix itself sounds to me like dbx doing a twisted dan curtin remix...so unique and minimal and funky and aww yeah. i really like mad daze too, dope pings and whistles and snarling bass and subtle guitar samples..sounds are organized really nicely, i dont remember being so into the nubian mindz lp or much other broken beat i've heard..maybe i should check it out again.. i suck at reviews/words today sorry jt ps will email you soon k!! out of contact but not at all forgotten..:) I'm back! I heard some great new releases coming up... Two marvelous moody, but light headed releases of Arne Weinberg. One on Headspace [way the go Tom!] and one on Technoir. If I could pick them out for a review somewhere I would've done them both !!! The magnificent talent of Rei Loci [Iridite prod] also surfaces on Headspace... and how! Funky 101 with a truckload of Soul and rhythms. : ) Wait till you hear the new Iridite my friends... YEEHAAAW! Dr. Nutcracker _ Want to check if your PC is virus-infected? Otherwise known as The Ballad of Dorothy Parker. :) Okay, maybe not a clone, but I think Prince influenced Andre just a wee bit. -d On Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at 12:00 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: She lives in my Lap is my favorite track off of it right now. RE: (313) Re: Outkast/She Lives in my Lap
I guess that's why it's my favorite. :) I understand the comparison to Ballad of DP Without the vocals both are awesome minimal tracks. That's minimal within funk and soul. RE: (313) London [313] Party Playlists
(resending, as I don't think it got through first time...) Hey, a big thanks for Saturday night people. Cheers to Brendan and Guy, and all the other DJs, plus all those who grooved! I seem to be coming down to London less and less these days for nights out (er not that Milton Keynes has got anything decent I'm going to instead!), but parties like this certainly encourage me to get my lazy backside along more often.
