(313) DJ Danger Mouse- The Grey Album
not exactly 313-related, but it might be of interest to some of you. my apologies if it's already been posted. now for some cuttin' and some pastin': via matt belanger - ex-student extraordinaire --- DOWNHILL BATTLE -- DJ Danger Mouse's recent Grey Album, which remixes Jay-Z's The Black Album and the Beatles White Album, has been hailed as a innovative hip-hop triumph. Despite that and the fact that only 3,000 copies of the album are in circulation, EMI sent cease and desist letters yesterday to Danger Mouse and the handful of stores that were selling the album, demanding that the album be destroyed. EMI isn't looking for compensation, they're trying to ban a work of art, said Downhill Battle's Rebecca Laurie. Special interests, including the major labels, have turned copyright law into a weapon, said Downhill Battle co-founder Holmes Wilson. If Danger Mouse had requested permission and offered to pay royalties, EMI still would have said no and the public would never have been able to enjoy this critically acclaimed work. Artists are being forced to break the law to innovate. The Grey Album has been widely shared on file sharing networks such as Kazaa and Soulseek, and has garnered critical acclaim in Rolling Stone (which called it the ultimate remix record and an ingenious hip-hop record that sounds oddly ahead of its time), the Boston Globe (which called it the most creatively captivating album of the year), and other major news outlets. http://www.illegal-art.org/audio/grey.html and a mirror site in case the above link didn't work: http://www.fatbits.net/grey/

FYI, we have it on good authority that it will be Scion not BC, and that the lineup was announced prematurely, but I am equally excited about that anyway. ahh, ok, thanks Tristan. Well, I'm excited too! and as its 5 mins walk from pikey towers and free, I hardly think I have room to complain! Just a side note, the next couple of months might be the richest few months music wise we've had for years round here, so a big thanks to all who add their bit... I can see, between now and april, the following. Larry Heard/Brett Dancer/Kenny Larkin/Kraftwerk/Greg Wilson/Scion doing BC. Not bad eh? and to think I've been moaning to everyone who will listen that I cant afford to go to movement! I was a little disappointed by the Franz Ferdinand album, but maybe I need to give it a few more listens. Other non-electronic bands/acts I've been listening to a lot recently: Black Keys, Fiery Furnaces, The Coral, Devendra Barnhart, British Sea Power. There have been a surprising number of good rock/indie/whatever/albums over the last year or so. The Black Keys Thickfreakness was probably the best rock album of last year. As for Flaming Lips, it should be easy enough to pick up Yoshimi.. on vinyl, although anything older might be tricky. It's not exactly Indie Rock, but there's an awesome album out on FatCat at the moment by Greg Davis called Curling Pond Woods, it's kind of lo-fi Beach Boys meets Nick Drake and some ambient drones (?), closest thing I can compare it to would be Sebadoh. RE: (313) bands
I really dig this band called Pinback, one album in particular called Blue Screen Life, really nice stuff, more lush sounds than grindy guitar noise. Also, other band called The Mercury Program, no vocals, just nice lush music. And one other I dig is called American Analog Set, in similar vein as the others, with vocals. Latest album Promise of Love is great. Also, probably a little better known is The Postal Service, more electronic than traditional band though. Pretty cool sounds there. Apparently the vocalist is also in a band called Deathcab for Cutie, but I am not familiar with them. Hope this helps! (313) Traveling to London
Calling all Londoners: 1. Can somebody let me know what clubs/events a Detroit-native cannot afford to miss in London? I'm there for nearly a week - March 9th (Tuesday) to March 14th (Sunday). I'll be staying at a friend's flat near the Barbican. Techno! 2. A good, crazy pub to take in the Arsenal v. Celta Vigo Champions League match that week - I couldn't get tickets, but i assume the pubs will be packed - the match is at home for Arsenal. Sports! 3. Can you take photographs inside the new Saatchi museum? Art! Also, I nearly forgot: Much thanks to whomever posted the British Airways $100 fare each way to London Heathrow some time ago - I wouldn't be headed there were it not for the list and its savvy membership! Ooh - could it be Jason Williams aka Velocette? Anybody know what ever happenend to him the Parallel label? He had a few really nice records.. you know what? I don't have alot of John Tejada records, but my mate passed me one in piccadilly yesterday that sounded killer. it was *someone* John Tejada, and I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure it was 'velocette'. now you've said it, that rings a bell. I only flicked through it, but stuck it in my bag to buy when I get some money, it really did sound very good on first listen. it was on a label I didnt recognise too. alex _ - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers. (313) Tristan re: Crazy idea
Hi, Tristan. Thanks for the kind words. While I appreciate the sentiment, if I did ever play at a festival like movement, I'd want to be there on account of the usual routes (being asked and/or applying) rather than by petition. But nice of you to think of me, though. On another note, my Consumer Vs. User album for Phthalo (which includes my remix of your Frosting) is currently being mastered by Mark Vapourspace Gage and is third in line to come out on Phthalo (ie two albums due to be released on Phthalo, and then the third will be mine). hi 3. Can you take photographs inside the new Saatchi museum? Art! I'm not really an art gallery kind of guy, but when I was last in london me and my girlfriend went to the tate modern, which was free and I really enjoyed it. so, check it out! I think the saatchi place costs about 8 quid or something. I think if you walked from the barbican along the river to the saatchi gallery, you go right past it anyway. They had this amazing thing in there called the sun which was, amazing! 2. A good, crazy pub to take in the Arsenal v. Celta Vigo Champions League match that week - I couldn't get tickets, but i assume the pubs will be packed - the match is at home for Arsenal. Sports! Most pubs will be showing it I reckon, maybe head up to Islington/Highbury to get some 'home' atmosphere? alternatively, I'm sure there would be tickets for other london teams that week, if its the football experience you're after - or did you want to watch arsenal in particular? cant help on the events front, but I reckon theres plenty other list members that can : ) _ - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers. John Collins is Submerge's booking agent now (Premier Bookings): http://www.submerge.com/bookings_premier/roster.htm I finally got to meet him during the festival last year. He's a longtime DJ and AR guy and played iirc at the 2002 DEMF. When you talk about for those who know, John is definitely that. fred
