(313) 313 jungle etc

2005-02-17 Thread Philip

Funsters

Check the first 2 artcore comps on react if u want some sweet detroity
jungle from back in tha day when jungle was proper and they cut up the
beats, not just a sped up loop.

New things: carl craig 'just another day' 12 - 'sandstorms' is *nice* but
the rest is ordinary. Isolee remixes of louie vega 'africa/brasil' are HOT,
isolee's editing is awesome, subtle but always on the money, just like 'beau
mot plage' yummy.

a lot of great dnb i just slept on, thinking it would last forever and
i'd catch up. how little i knew of UK music trends ;)
now there are so many cuts i wish i'd have picked up. Charles Noel,
Titonton from Ohio, and others in detroit like Paris and DJ Rotator
(even DJ Assault's early mixes to some degree!) were rocking this stuff
at parties and much of it great. I had a copy of a Paris mixtape
(cassette) that he reportedly created in order to hand to to Mills when
he was in the D for one weekend... one side was super dope minimal
detroit techno all cut-n-paste mixed Claude style.. the flip side was
all very detroity feeling DnB. No idea where it is now... sigh.. but
 brilliant from front to back.

Anyway, DnB to me, coming from a learning to Dj in a techno
background, it was hard to keep up with and -- like any great imports
-- a finite amount of it came to Record Time and the best of the best
stuff disappeared quickly. I'd love to hear anyone/everyone take a
crack at the best jungle/DnB mixes that employ that whole 'detroity
feeling'... from Jacob's Optical Stairway to Lemon D to 4 Hero to LTJ
to the better Photek to whoever else you feel represents the best of
the (this is sad to say) 'golden era' of dnb, before it mutated into
something unreconizable, something that felt like you never really knew
it to begin with. I know this thread comes up once a year but i need
some mixes to go with it... School me. My iPod is a yearnin'

Someone in detroit get Brian Gillespie to rock a mix from this era, he
had *everything*... first time i ever saw someone in the US sporting a
Metalheads t-shirt to a Family Funktion party... he was all over it.

2005-02-17 Thread sqrrt
Well, it's not a direct sample, it's either sampled from the Chicago
house tracks from Armando or Mike Dunn or whichever other artist took
the Martin Circus hook and re-sung it, or perhaps Chris Brann re-sung
the dum dum part himself, but the track is off of Wamdue Project's
Resource Toolbook vol.1 on Strictly Rhythm, track name Neburu
(Electric Storm).

Funny, I have always seen the original Martin Circus track name-checked
a bunch of times, but I had never heard it myself until now. :o)

I forgot who originally posted the link earlier today for the
Soulphiction Classic Cuts mix/re-edits, but I'm really diggin it, thanks!

Which brings me to the need for a tracklisting. There are lots of track
which seem to be essential links between Disco and House / Techno (that
'80-'85 gap).

I'd love to pick up some of them.

Any idea what the track that starts at 21:33 is? Must be obvious
(Chicago, Chicago, where can I go?), but I don't have a clue.

Can anyone help? Andrew (Duke), maybe?

So far I know this:

1. Bohannon - Let's Start II Dance
2. {early Mass Production or Brass Construction track (not sure which)}
3. ? {used later as basis for several dum dum tracks. cf. Armando,
Mike Dunn, Wamdue et al}
4. ? (is that the Stylistics?) - Almost There
5. ? (is that Black Ivory?) - Hustlin'
6. Loleatta Holloway - Hit'n'Run
7. ?
8. ?
9. Straffe - Set It Off
10. Jungle Wonz - Bird In A Guilded Cage
11. ? {... I have this, but can't remember what it is for the life of
me; classic solo-sax-house}
12. Tortured Soul - I Might Do Something Wrong
13. ? {mid-90's instrumental house track}
14. Moodymann - Mahogany Black (or Black Sunday?)
15. {9/11 news broadcast snippets}

Any clues would be appreciated.

photek issued the same complaint years ago and did an album of

 chicago

 style acid house.

i wouldnt describe it like that at all. really the only thing
chicago-y about it was robert owens on vocals for 2 cuts. it was
maybe 30% house and none of it was very acid, though it was very
good. there were some ambient cuts, some downtempo breakbeat kinda
cuts, and even one really nice drum and bass tune. last good thing he
 ever did, actually.

think about it. if jeffs mills declared techno useless, would you

 all stop

 playing it?

well lets look at it like it should be. lets say all the techno in
the world started sounding like hardhouse. and by all i mean ALL. if
he said it then, he would be right. tom

Im down with the Vince Watson CD. A lot better than his older
stuff on Rotation and the BioSphere album which were ok, but
nowhere near as deep as the fractured, melodic outer space
yearnings coming out his new joint. Best bit of techno Ive
heard in a while if Im honest.

I got a 12 at the weekend by him though I can't remember what it's called -
3 mixes of the same track, 1 heavy / minimal I didn't like (by Joel Mull)
but the others good, think the VW own mix is the best, don't know if this is
off this album or not but I'd recommend it if you're looking vinyl rather
than CD.

Will it work with this at all? That would be very good, I donwload your

sorry about the dumb q.

i was curious to see how this differs to just DLing, say, Matt's show
and uploading it to your mp3 player (no matter what type) in the usual
way. i think the difference is that you have software that subscribes to
a show (in a RSS style) and the mp3 is downloaded automagically and is
zapped to the device when it is next connected.

http://www.ipodder.org/whatIsIpodder

It seems there is Meta-data associated with each 'broadcast' too which
means that track listings etc are also dl'd at the same time. quite cool.

what i don't understand is, doesn't this mean that if you do a podcast
you're wide open for the RIAA/BPI to come in a take you to the cleaners?

How else are they going to deter people from doing it?

This seems an ideal way to me, especially as the guy was using them for
commercial purposes.
Everyone thinks they can get away with it at the mo, which is wrong. I'm
all in favour of free downloads for previewing stuff etc, its a good promo
tool.

But to take some mp3's off the net and go play them in a club for money?

Nah, not having that at all. a) it's thieving b) it's lazy c) it's lame.

2005-02-17 Thread alex . bond

Well, feeling left out, I went to the record shop at lunch.

Big pile of stuff to listen to.

3 x new DJ Bone records, one 10, 2 12's. One side of the ten (longevity 3)
is just a sped up liquid liquid sample. Saved one of the 12's to buy, I
like side A of Modern Melodies, sounds ace at minus 7. Gawd knows how you
play it at the right speed, but, yeah, sounds good slower.

Blue Krak Trax. Good acid, but not my bag at all. Is this the one
Jason/Francis/David were speaking of? Don't know, but, yeah, not into this.

New Harmonie Park. 3 tracker by Rick Wade. Sounded nic, just flicked
through, typical R.Wade on first listen, usual high quality deep house.
If you like Ricks stuff, you'll like this I'm sure.

Some 'italian' thing on Relish - a 12. Yep, sounds Italian, and old. Not
bad mind, will try that one again for sure.

think I listened to something else, cant remember what though.

Yeh man, I got the vinyl edition of artcore number1 when it came out. I still
play sweet dreams and get inspired. Gives me chills. Probably my favorite dnb
comp ever (I don't like much dnb at all though mind). Some of Blaktroniks older
material was in this veign, but a bit more experimental and less noisy (meaning
right up my alley). As a matter of fact I remember seeing them live here in
atlanta at a posh (albeit empty) club in like 2000 (?) and they delivered a
full two hours of delicious detroit inspired experimental dnb madness. The 15
of us there were definitely in awe. To date, I've never seen anything like it.
I wonder if there're any old sets from them floating around somewhere...h.

It said they found his laptop @ the club.I thougth the only way they
can prosecute is if first there's proof of actually downloading or file

stealing from. It sounds like they've either been watching this guy for

i just pointed mr bond to a place on ebay that i got mine from
that has 2 left, though it might be cheaper for shipping if you
get them from the label if they actually have them.

the 3 most pbscure of his records are this one, the A Touch of
Class one, and the one on Out of the Box which i still dont have.
now i think all im missing is that one and the early HP records, i
have all the funky chocolates, the mgs, the chord 44, both
abstract fusions that have his tracks on them, tracks from the
park, all the music is stuff, and the m3 one. oh yeah, im missing
night trackin too, but that one will be the most difficult to

(313) Sammy Dee Shawn Rudiman in NYC 2/25

2005-02-17 Thread Bryan Kasenic
Friday February 25

***THE BUNKER***

Sammy Dee (Pantytec, Perlon | Berlin)
Plexus (M_nus | NYC)
Shawn Rudiman Jwan Allen Lukas Owens Adam Ratana (Technoir |
Pittsburgh)
Unjust (Schematic | Miami)

Sammy Dee tore it up with Dan Bell at Spinoza's birthday
party in September, and we're thrilled to have him back. He
is an important part of the Berlin based Perlon label, and
one half of Pantytec alongside Zip (aka Dimbiman). After a
recent gig in New York, the NY Times gave him a glowing
review that you can read here: http://tinyurl.com/3njtq

The Technoir Audio crew represent the best of Pittsburgh
based techno, with deep classic Detroit influences. Bunker
fave Anthony Shake Shakir calls Shawn Rudiman's live set
one of the best live PA's i've ever seen. Shawn is one of
the few people doing live electronic music without a laptop
these days. Tonight they are presenting a four-man set with
two DJs and two live electronics performers.
http://www.technoiraudio.com/

Plexus is one of our favorite minimal techno DJs. He's
played at some of the better loft parties we've been to,
usually with M_nus labelmates like Magda, Troy Pierce, and
Richie Hawtin (remember when they all lived in Brooklyn?).
He recently put out his first 12, a split with Troy Pierce
on M_nus ... it's a great spacey minimal groover that has
been getting late night play at the Bunker. We're not sure
why it took so long to make this happen, but we're glad
he's finally joining us at the Bunker.
http://m-nus.com/

Unjust recently moved to NYC from Miami, where she threw
many great parties. She is an amazing minimal techno
selector whose taste runs very close to Bunker residents
Movement and Spinoza. She will be starting the night off
properly, so show up early.

Okay, so call it out then. Who's style is he jacking specifically? (I really do
wanna know cause I got my own suspicions and want to see if I'm right) And if
he's doing things that sound like he did them 10 years ago, wouldn't it be more
of a return to form? And since the whole acid revival thing has been going on,
I think this is some of the best, deepest acid house with more interesting
lines than any of the other crap preset (randomize) 303 shxte that's been
coming out lately. Mind you, I havent bought an afx rec in around 10 years and
I didn't like anal#1. got number 2 though, and in my opinion the larry heard
bite track is wy too short and very well done. You want unimaginative
ripoffs see eddie richards take on the same track from a year or two back
itleefuoynac. Now that was a crap ripoff. I don't know though. RDJ's always
been about surrounding himself with hype and doing things tongue in cheek so he
can laugh at the idiots who fell for it later. And don't I re!
member someone saying that a few of these tracks were actually done like 8-9
years ago? I could've swornwell. Whatever. It's loads better than most of
the let's bring acid back crap out now that does a much more obvious job of
ripping off greats cough krax cough. Word.

By the way, I was smiling when I wrote this. Now I'm laughing.

RE: (313) Apex twin

2005-02-17 Thread Stoddard, Kamal
Yeh but that's my point. I can respect a tribute. If it's well done. I
personally think no music is made in a bubble, and that if we all approached
our creative expressions as a tribute to our inspirations then maybe the bar
might be a little higher and there wouldn't be so much crap about. That's what
differentiates ugly edits/moxie style stuff from the mashup mania stuff to me.
Ones done outta greed and the others done outta respect. (Mind, RDJ, theo, et
al. still might come out and say they were just doing it for the cash :) I mean
most uk techno I like sounds like something from detroit circa 95-99. but it's
well done and interesting and I'm a sucher for interesting, well done stuff of
any style. Take rick wade, I feel like I own every record he's put out (and
only got like four). But that doesn't take away the fact that every one of them
is well done, so I see why people continue to buy 'em. I kinda think it's cool

BLEUPULP [syndroma.org]

maxime tanguay aka bleupulp is an active member of quebec city electronic

2000, then opened up for various electronic music style such as techno,
house, idm, minimal ... his love for electronic music pushed him to
start creating his own music, since about 2002 you can hear him playing

experimentalists such as Andrew Duke, Kero, Algorithm, or Deadbeat. Possessed
since childhood with a needling drive to splice together discrete musical

it was only a matter of time before an unwitting companion introduced Sarcastic
to his destiny in the early nineties: the Technics-1200. Since, Sarcastic has
founded Level 4 Productions, a record label, artist collective and promotion
company synonymous with the cutting-edge of techno. His love for the chugging
repetitive nature of ghettotek, pure tek, acid house and hardcore genres

(313) Digital Rights

2005-02-17 Thread robin

Does anyone know the legality of having a digital copy of something you
already own (vinyl or cd) on your laptop? (in the US or in the EU?)

This is the precedent that if it isn't EU-wide soon might be:

Norway Proposes New Digital Copyright Law
http://news.findlaw.com/ap/ht/1700/2-11-2005/20050211080016_40.html

This kinda scuppers any use of laptops for DJing doesn't it?
