I still find Carl Cox an odd choice of UK representation in a film such as this, sure he was playing some techno sets back in the day, but he was also playing garage, house, jungle, db, happy hardcore and just about anything else he could get booked for! And his actual music has never really been any good. In marketing terms I'd think the words would be wider choice, bigger appeal - in more ways than one. I don't actually mind him being used as it means more people will probably get switched on to the special stuff. (313) save me, I think I'm going over to the darkside...
Just got sent the new Moby 10.and it's actually OK! /ducks/ The LP is utter, utter cobblers, without a doubt some of the worst cash in chart/stadium techno I've heard for a long time, but the two tracks on the 10 (admittedly after one very quick listen) sound like quite reasonable minimal techno tracks with a nod to the 'german' clicky style. I suspect that in blind listening conditions many would say: OK track, maybe on Perlon? not that I'm trying to justify myself or anything;) Is it too late for me, or can I still get help?

I know Carl isn't who I personally would pick for this movie, but if you talk with some of the guys from back in the day, they give alot of respect to Carl Cox... I am not sure why, because I have never heard anything from him I was impressed with either..I remember when he was playing the DEMF...I got a ear full about his influences on Detroit music...From artists who have been around since the beginning. ~Erin Stewart Caig wrote: I still find Carl Cox an odd choice of UK representation in a film such as this, sure he was playing some techno sets back in the day, but he was also playing garage, house, jungle, db, happy hardcore and just about anything else he could get booked for! Re: (313) save me, I think I'm going over to the darkside...
Moby is not without talent. He is a careerist who likes to make money, and is willing to put out commercial stuff to formula and frankly I don't blame him. He makes a lot of money, without killing or cheating anyone, so he's causing a lot less harm than most rich people. He will occasionally rise above the level of commercial product as the mood strikes him. Maybe if we praise him for those rare rise-abover tracks, instead of always slagging him off as a sell-out, he might do more of them. I do have it on good authority that he is kinda smelly in person, if you want some dirt on him. He showed up at a friend of mine's studio for a photo shoot, and at the photographer's request swapped shirts with my friend. My friend was so grossed out , he threw his shirt away when he got it back. This is why you read 313 list isn't it? Re: (313) Hi Tech Soul - The Movie
Well I knew Carl back when he was selling rave tickets from his flat in Brighton and heard him out often (It was hard to miss him in the late 80s early 90s) and I dont remember him once ever truly blowing me away. Sure he would do the whole 6 deck mixing thing and he was definatly one of the more competent mixers on the rave scene back then, but I always felt his track selection, whatever genre he was playing, was just too obvious and uninspired. Its as if he always had ambitions to be a radio friendly figure and always played the 'big' tunes. I dunno, maybe I'm being harsh, but I just feel as both an artist and a DJ he has always left me cold. If they really wanted a big recognisable UK name to be represented on the movie then Dave Clarke would actually have been the better bet maybe. Re: (313) save me, I think I'm going over to the darkside...
which tracks are on the 10? I've had a promo of the double CD sitting around for a while now and have just now opened it and listening to it... my first impressions? If he didn't already have an established name in the music business this release would never have gotten him one. Comment on Love Should - hopefully it should never sound like this song! His slowed down melancholy take on New Order's Temptation is interesting. Probably the only song I would return to. Still, the second CD is all ambient tracks so I'm hoping he maybe put more effort into that. I'll post my reactions when I get a chance. Re: (313) Hi Tech Soul - The Movie
If they really wanted a big recognizable UK name to be represented on the movie then Dave Clarke would actually have been the better bet maybe. not from an American perspective - they're probably trying to attract a wider audience and Dave Clarke just doesn't have the recognition here in the US that Carl Cox has. Carl tours the US quite frequently while Dave, I think, refuses to come over here at all. More people would be attracted to the film with Carl's name on it - fans of progressive house, trance, techno, etc. They know who he is. Dave Clarke would get blank stares and a shoulder shrug (in the US). I'm sure they're trying to attract a wide audience to the film instead of the thirty or so of us who chat on a regular basis on this list and know the difference between Craig and Cox. LOL, all the Moby lovers coming out of the woodwork Kent's right though, he does occassionally rise above the commercial cobblers, 'Myopia' from the 'Ambient' LP springs to mind + the mix of 'Move' that's on the first vol of Trance Europe Express is very nice - pretty deep actually. Re: (313) save me, I think I'm going over to the darkside...
i saw New Order on Moby's Area One tour (way to tie a thread together) a few years back. They were magnificant! they opened with Atmosphere and half way through Barny stopped playing and pointed at the sky behind the audience. We all turned around and there was a giant rainbow in the sky. Magical! Oh- and there is an utterly offensive lounge singer version of Temptation on the new Moby album. Which is tragic, but at least I got to take this thread around the block... twice. [Warning: Extreme biases present.] I'm one of the biggest JD freaks in the world, from Day One. (How many geezers do you know who bought FAC 2 - A Factory Sampler when it was brand-new back in 1978? Martin? :) ) As far as I'm concerned, JD was The Greatest Band To Ever Walk The Face Of The Earth, bar none. No other band comes close, for me. So, for me, it's pretty hard to listen to New Order (or watch 'em, like on the DVDs) without this bias kicking in. (Especially when I see Atmosphere on a DVD and later on they play World In Motion - my God, what utter cack. How could the same 3 people have played on both of those tracks?!?) Anyway, erm ... right, the new album. Utter rubbish. You can't hear Bernard's vocals as noise when the lyrics are so utterly pedestrian (Ian was a tough act to follow, but nowadays, Barney's stuff is just plain embarrassing). And the music is mostly Rock-by-the-numbers, too. There's even a bloody Reggae-sounding track - and, what's scary, it's one of the better tracks on it. It's just so ... so lackluster, so dull, so uninteresting musically. The funny thing is, I was just listening to Adult.'s Anxiety Always the other day, and a few tracks made me stop and think how well sonically they do the 80's New Order sound in places ... In short - this record is an embarrassment, and they should retire. You have no idea how hard it is for me to say that - but they should. - Greg the old jaded Post-Punk geezer

what would be interesting is to see a film featuring all the people that used to be on almost every record - Marc Kinchen, Santonio Echols, etc. get all the people in who built the sound - Shake, Terrence Parker, Kelli Hand, D Wynn, maybe a tribute to Laura?, etc. good to see that Blake Baxter and Thomas Barnett are in it. so Jeff Mills is the Electrifying Mojo then? ;) MEK [EMAIL PROTECTED] et To 03/22/05 04:19 PM Martin Dust [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc robin [EMAIL PROTECTED], 313@hyperreal.org Subject Re: (313) Hi Tech Soul - The Movie the obvious one is hawtin. i guess there's a lot of back drama about that one. there was also no one from the ur camp (if i recall) On Tue, 22 Mar 2005, Martin Dust wrote: Who IYO is missing? - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: robin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, March 22, 2005 9:27 PM Subject: Re: (313) Hi Tech Soul - The Movie saw it a month ago. much more professional than i thought. a little lopsided. a few key players missin, but def the best attempt at this subject so far.
