Has he played lately? although I do recall this one party where he barely played and spent most of the time handing over records to someone else (instead of playing back to back). That was the last time I saw him play I think. I can't remember anything particularly negative about his mixing at any other parties so I'll assume he was ok :P
(313) Re: what the ?
The best celebrity DJ I ever saw play was actor Alex Dimitriades, big Detroit head, and actually v, v, v good DJ. I am sorry but this is just too much for my tiny brain to comprehend...where / when did you see him DJ ? ? ? does he play out often ? ? ? I didn't know he DJed but I know he was bigtime into Derrick May and then I saw him play at Honkytonks once and he was excellent. It wasn't promoted as Alex Dimitriades but someone at the club tipped me off so I was curious. He definitely had some good records in his crate. I've unintentionally bought quite a few of his second hand records before. what did you buy dave ? ? ? ? did you buy them from him personally ? ? ? or did they just have his name on them from a shop ? ? ? not that I'm obsessed with him or anything ! ! ! ! Ha, ha, but plenty are! He was the Aussie hearthrob at one stage, more so than Heath Ledger, etc.

Alex, Yup. These cats are a MUST see. Live, electronic, bionic, ultra-phonic. They bring a great, spontaneous, party vibe to their shows. I had the pleasure of seeing them in Detroit, where they rule, of course. Yes, they are out and about in Europe so for all of the 313 ers out there, track 'em down. Peace.

My God. Undisputed best thing ever by about 75,936,937,140,746,836,847 times better than its nearest rival. Thank something smarter than humans for John Arnold's SPAM late Friday. There is absolutely no way words can convey how good it was to see the better-than-best-thing-ever on the best sound system in the world. My response afterwards was to stand speechless for 2 minutes, have a piss, then hug John Arnold (whom I've never met in person) ASAP. This was madatory. I almost cried about 10 times during the set it was so perfect. I've never known music could be so good. Everone I could see had a permagrin of pure joy. This was a lot better than the Sound Signature party @ the Detroit Contemopary @ the 2nd DEMF, which was previously THE BEST THING EVER. Aaarrh! http://www.indcjournal.com/archives/noose.jpg -Original Message- From: Tristan Watkins [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 14 June 2005 13:23 To: 313 Subject: (313) Some slightly more coherent reactions to the best performance ever Argh. Been struggling to get this through... So, I'm a little more capable of describing what about and why I liked the John Arnold and Jeremy Ellis (Ayro) show on Sunday so much. First, the evironment was flawless. Plastic People can get a bit cramped even on Sundays, but it was just well-attended enough to create a properly enthused response, while still leaving enough room to move. Also, some live performers I've seen there in the past have shown a total disregard for normal volume restrictions, litterally clearing the entire dance floor through pure obliviousness, but again that was not the case on Sunday. It probably helps to have seen Ayro live before to understand what's so unique and compelling (I'm personally thinking of his main stage DEMF performance a couple of years ago). Basically he just did everything in that show: starting with live MPC into some live Moog, each suddenly becoming a loop before you know it, then he'd run across the stage, play some live percussion, run back and start singing. Later John Arnold, some singers and others joined him to round things out, but he still managed to wear just about every hat. So this time around it's billed as an MPC tag team (the Akai MPC is probably the most popular sampler in the world and has 16 square pads to trigger samples, particularly good for percussion). It started with Jeremy Ellis delivering a blistering percussion solo, which came full circle to a thin broken beat atop which John Arnold layered his own percussion solo to fill things up, then off they went. John Arnold played live guitar (although some of the stuff he was coming out with was processed enought to sound like the craziest techno bass and/or synth lines I've heard). Ayro had two keyboards with him, with which he would do visually blurring, mind-melting solos that somehow terminated in a newly-formed synth line. He also sang really, really well. Some of the newer Peurto Rican stuff really stood out but the whole thing was great. Beyond all that, with so much to do at all times and so much ground to cover, the whole thing tied together brilliantly, allowing each artist a bit of spotlight when necessary, but generally working together without a hitch. This was absolutely the next level of live performance: entirely created on the spot (save a couple of missing vocalists on a couple of tracks), masterful execution, complete pride, confidence and joy in the process and result. They also managed to go through about 4 mics and an MPC meltdown without missing a beat. Stunning. I don't know why you ask about the London show specifically but i went to see his Moodymann (or the Moodybandd as some friends called it ;)) in Amsterdam last friday. They played for almost 2 hours there and it was more of a Mahogany records show case then a live set from Moodymann. It started with Nicky O. preforming a couple of soul tracks, followed by Paul Randolph on bass and vocals preforming some of his material and with Andres on percussion on some of the tracks. Piranahead was doing keys and playing guitar with both Nicky O.'s and Paul Randolph's tracks. The whole show was hosted by KDJ's cousin (nudge, nudge, wink, wink). After that Moodymann came on stage and started out with this amazing tracks called Sexy Mothaf*cka (That was a really great track btw!) and did a show that reminded me a bit of the same show he did when i saw him at the Majestic theater in Detroit. Only this time the girl (Nicky O.) was not under a sheet but both behind a white screen with a lamp behind it so you saw silhouettes of KDJ and Nicky O. doing there erm... thing. KDJ sing/talked on top of tracks, they played some more tracks as well. Then he brought on Roberta Sweet who did a track together with Andres finally she did an acapella toghether with Paul Randolph. Great show but don't expect a lot of 4/4 Moodymann tracks it was extremly nice to listen too. RE: (313) Moodyman
Ive heard a few reports from the Glasgow gig saying that KDJ didnt go near a keyboard or MPC all night, SHH. I'm trying to sell my tickets to Nick Hardie. Don't listen to them Nick. Besides, you know you won't be sober enough to notice. Roll up. Roll up. Look, Bond, I'm not interested. As long as there's a big laser I'll be happy...
AW: Re: (313) Moodyman
uh ehh ... what's that??? got kdj33 also right here, but 32 is pretty new info!!! what's on that one??? They were selling some records there too - new Amp Fiddler, KDJ 32 33.

talked to someone who attended the maile vaile session yesterday, will be aired in a couple of weeks on gilles peterson worldwide show. he said it was mindblowing! can't wait to hear it. c* fwdthought wrote: Alex, Yup. Peace.

Actually, to be far to rock star kids, Paul Kelly's son Declan is one of Melbourne's best DJs and has a musical knowledge that belies his years - and he's a lovely guy. He's worked hard and never traded on association. I think few know he's Kelly's son, though it's not a secret. Now that you mentioned it, I've been getting a whole lotta mileage out of Declan and his DJ partner Richard Campbell's website of late - http://www.r-n-d.net/ Plenty of mixtape gold in the Sounds section, not least of which are the couple of R'n'D mixes at the bottom of the page... They have a track lined up for a Yoruba Records comp right? Think it's due out next month. Andy

Re: (313) Duane 'in the mix' Bradley mix
When ever I see a webpage like this I think how lucky we are to have people that have the love and are willing to take the time to assemble all the info, mixes, pictures, etc. There's so many DJs who have either slipped into the fog of our memories or have passed on - I must commend those dedicated to immortalizing these artists so that the next generation(s) can have some understanding of and appreciate the talent of these men and women. same goes for those who take on the even bigger task of writing books about DJs passed. Just wondering why most of my posts don't make it to the list? Seems to happen when i reply all and the 313 address is 'CC' Any ideas Cheers J
(313) mess i made
Hi, I noticed that the rotating assembly's mess i made (appears on the natural aspirations album) is a cover of a song originally written by ltg exchange (listen here: http://music.rushhour.nl/shop/31185.mp3). I didn't notice any credits on the vinyl sleeve of the natural aspirations album. That makes it stealing, right? I thought that when covering a song, you always should mention the original composer. Jurren? Cheers, Maarten

Oh, that would be explained by the mxyzptlk filter, coded to give your messages extra attention. ;) Seriously tho' ... I don't post often, but have experienced similar to what's been described. My account is subbed and I'm not using anything which would choke a filter. This happens only on 313 - I am subbed to several hyperreal lists. It also happens to several other people who are also properly subbed and 'properly' posting. jeff
