(313) FW: Black Dog Mix - Department of Dogma pt1

2005-09-20 Thread Mark Pays
Hi List,

If this gets through it'll be my first post to the 313 list. Posts from
my old address never got through, lets see if this address works.
Hopefully this marks the end of two years of lurking!

Anyway, to business -

I downloaded the Black Dog mix department of Dogma part 1. I think
this came from the Little Detroit site. Does anyone know of, or have,
the track listing? Also, was there ever a part 2?

Thanks,

Mark.

Yeah I read it. It's not bad, and definitely a textbook for those
wanting to dig deeper beyond Public Image and the ilk. I kind of
wished for some sort of commentary option I could switch on and read
alternating opinions from Paul Morley. The discographies that were
(are?) available on the publisher's website are outstanding and very
thorough.

It's going to be available in the states next year, but with a few
missing chapters. Get the UK version if at all possible.

Yeah I read it. It's not bad

I almost felt inspired for about 5 minutes till I finished it and made
another joint.
I think you can pick holes in it (e.g. he sometimes says this record was
the blueprint for such and such...etc.. and I'm not having it that your
average jungle producer listened to mad obscure post-punk. no way.)

I just liked reading in some further detail about some bands I have records
by, and was good to make a few connections re producers etc. I should read
my record sleeves really, I can be a dope at times, its like I look at
things but they never go in my brain. infact my girlfriend says that she
talks to me and I'm looking at her, but it aint going in.

I was inspired about some of the ideas the bands had. and stuff. made me
think no one does that today. but I'm sure they do and someone will dress
it up as well in 20 years time.

I seem to recall DJ DIe doing a remix of ACR's 'Yeah Boy', I think because he
was into them.

Granted, ACR aren't particularly obscure and DJ Die might not be you average
jungle producer, but then again what is an 'average jungle producer'?

well, alright, it wasn't a good example, bit of a flippant comment.

I cant remember the example. must look it up, but he was referencing a
pretty obscure post-punk record and saying it served as a blueprint for
later day jungle.

I cry no chance. theres just no way that those guys were listening to
that stuff I dont reckon. they were sampling breaks from lots of places,
but I'm not having it that they listened to this record and thought ooh,

BITBB is definitely in there, but it's not the only component. I think that
producers back then were just as into diverse/obscure music as they are now.
It's part of trying to create something different or novel.

it worthwhile)

hawkeye - 4077th (can't reemmber all details on this)
dexter - d-funked - clone
duplex - frictioonal freqency - frantic flowers
ART compilation (like you didn't know about this :) )
cocamoto on must (analmatique II (great name :) ) the highlight)

that new andy stott thing (can';t remember the details)
new planet delsin comp (yeah yeah i know everyone knows abotut his but
i'm still well looking forward to it)

I love you too Rob. I know this because you tell me to make records. Also
because you tell me I'm not Guns'n'Roses, since that would be an insult! I
actually dismantled my studio for well over a year--mistakenly thinking I
would produce using software only, which was only good for crashing my
machine. Plus my basement studio which used to remind me of some far off
technoasis for the soul started to feel like just another cluttered
basement... I have since remedied both of these things and reassembled my
studio more compact on the top floor of my house--and the irony is, as soon
as I did this the software stopped crashing my machine. Now as far as the
tracks... I actually did just upload a new unreleased one on myspace
yesterday.

(313) I nearly forgot... a shortish London report

2005-09-20 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

Now that I'm finally over my jetlag I'll try to recall the main points of
my London vacation. Trouble is I'm doing it after a week of Bristolian
indulgences :-D

First and foremost - Tristan was a great host. A big thank you goes out to
you sir. If you ever need a place in Minneapolis you've got it.
Now onto the story...

Got in on Saturday morning around 9am - missing the Werk boat party the
night before. From what I heard it was good but not as good as last year.
To make up for it we went to the Cntrl*Alt party at the Telegraph just
around the corner from Tristan's flat. Primarily an electro/IDM/breaks
night. The Telegraph (for those that haven't been there) is a Thai (?)
restaurant/lounge with a big back room. It wasn't much of a place before I
was told but they've redone it with a bigger and better soundsystem and
nicer decor. They had a small dance floor in the main front room by the
bar - small area but big enough to hop around. Good mix of electro and
drum bass going on in there with Po-Ski, Shelley Parker, Abstrakt
Knights, and others. Ventured into the big back room early on but the
sounds were of the wonky funky breaks kind so we hung out in the front
until a little later when Point B came on. Wow, that guy was fantastic.
He was working off his laptop creating some unpredictable and surprising
electro. His music never fell into a rut but there was definitely a groove
there. Highly recommended. From what I remember from the rest of the
night - Radioactive Man sucked eggs. Never heard him live before but I do
have a mix tape of a live set from a few years ago and I swear that he
played the exact same songs in the exact same sequence that night.
Compared to the rest of the music that night he was 10 years behind. Can't
believe this guy is a member of Two Loneswordsmen! After that I think I
lost it to some jungle/db in the front room and then again in the big room
at the end of the night. I think it was NoYeahNo that ended the night with
f*cked up db noise in the Sh!tmat vein. Loved it.

Eh, then what

Lost on Sunday (loosing track of days already by this time). Before that
Tristan took me down to Co-Op @ Plastic People. Tried to blag our way in
since we were only going to be there for about a half-hour and we got there
so early. Didn't work but the price was worth it for me. Can't wait to go
back there again. Thank you very much Tristan for taking me there!
Brilliant club - DJs - soundsystem. So clean and clear with super fat bass
rumble. Quite a small space but really the optimal size. I can see how
Co-Op can just go off. Wooden dancefloor (actually don't think I didn't
see anything else during my whole trip), wish more US clubs would install
wood floors. Who was playing uh, I think it was Daz-I-kue on the decks
when we got downstairs and it was already bouncing like bumper cars. The
club had *just* opened. I was immediately hoping around like a muppet and
by the end of our half-hour visit had managed to soak through my t-shirt.
Tristan pointed out Phil Asher when he arrived and I knew we were going to
miss one hell of a night. Ah well, I got an early taste of it and I can't
get it off my mind.

So, off to my first Lost experience. Waited in line with Hanna and Tristan
(Tristan was #1 by the way). Seemed to take forever for them to get it
together but once in the club was interesting to explore. A good size
space, multiple rooms, a bathroom attendant (lol). What else could you ask
for (maybe a better choice of liquor)? Eh, so there was a great big red
cube in one room where no DJs were but some pleasant ambienty music was
playing. Followed people into the main room which was dark and already
full of fog. Now I know where they got the name Lost from. Max Duley's
set - really great mood setter for the night. Slower deep techno put my
head in the same dark space my body was in. He later said he wasn't happy
with it but I think everyone else was. The rest of the night quickly
became a blur. Oliver Ho was on next and it was a seamless transition from
Max to Oliver. Didn't quite realize that Max was done. Don't really
remember much from Oliver's set except that I stayed on the floor except
for the occasional run to the bar while there was still room to move.
Steve Bicknell's set had me leaving the floor for the first and only time
that night. Wandered around into the front space which was set up into a
huge lounge area. Rhythm Sound were kicking back with a fantastic mix of
reggae/dub. Stood around there for a while looking around for familiar
faces as every sofa chair was taken. Finally found people sitting down
behind me against the wall. Chilled out there for a while and then went
back in for Spirit/65D Mavericks and Jeff Bells in 7 Mills. Never heard
Spirit before. They were good but felt that something was lacking just a
little bit. They were working off laptop and as Tristan pointed out it
seems like they were sequencing tracks

You'd be surprised. There's a BEF track that Shake used to play out

off Music For Stowaways (Stowaways = Walkmans, for you kids) but
that's probably wrong - which could well be one of the blueprints. Is
the track title mentioned in the book? Shake played it off of a vinyl
record that had a Virgin label; what's weird is that I thought it was
the only track on that side (I literally ran up to the decks in a total
freak-out when he played it to see) and the only B.E.F. vinyl I know of
that could fit the bill is

but that's a full album, not a 12 ...

Anyway, to business -

I downloaded the Black Dog mix department of Dogma part 1. I think

hello mark,
after doing a bit of searching at The Black Dog Towers website i've
discovered that the Department of Dogma pt 12 files are actually
sides 12 of the The Black Dog - Live int Toronto 1997 demo cassette.
Both files are still available for download at The Black Dog Towers
as well as a few other goodies. Click the web addy blow then visit
the 1997 demo link for the files two 'department of dogma files.'
also check out the two other tbd tracks there as well as the bttb mix
(Back to the Basics)? enjoy! http://techno.dogsquad.co.uk/tbd/

a proper tracklisting still would be nice! ; )
