Re: (313) Disco D on CNN
Dave was Disco D since forever -- since he was in high school. So whatever. I ask myself 2 questions about DJs and producers -- are they good people, and can they rock a party? Dave's always been the first and done the second. He makes tracks that don't always speak to my condition, but he isn't bombing poor brown people or molesting kids. You have to have some perspective. ... it doesn't reek of a desire to be a star in a sick culture no matter the price of fame. Uh, if you've ever spent 15 minutes talking to the man, you'd know how ridiculous this is. Anyway it's ridiculous for me to be defending him here -- he can take care of himself.

(313) artistry/keepin' it real was re: Disco D/Afrika B/VISA
This email is a tad on the long side because this--the starving artist whose art is a hobby VS the artist who derives a living wage (or better) from his/her art-- is something I feel extremely passionate about. From a personal perspective: I have seen far too many artists in my area who care too much about being an artist and not selling out--and also sometimes what would other people think?--that they have done physical harm to their bodies through malnutrition, lack of sleep, lack of shelter, etc. I'm talking about artists who refuse to get a day job when their art can't pay the bills and balk at any opportunity that might benefit them as an artist if it is something that they could possibly relate to selling out. Have any of you heard of the painter Maud Lewis? She was a brilliant folk artist who lived from 1903-1970 here in Nova Scotia. She lived in horrible conditions: 12 X 13 foot one-room house (!) with no electricity or plumbing; abusive husband; physical debilities that were made much much worse by the conditions she lived in. She refused to charge more than $5 for her paintings and refused to move to a healthier environment (ie a house with electricity and plumbing). She refused to leave her husband because he had supported her early on. She didn't take advantage of the fact that people, in her best interests, wanted to help her get the medical attention she needed. Maud Lewis had international coverage (my first experience with her art was when one of her paintings was used on the cover of our provincial phone book for one year, years after she died) and she even sold paintings--again, for $5!--to members of the national US and Canadian governments. Many people tried to help her including arts organizations, not just individuals, but she was so focused on being an artist that she thought moving to a better home and charging more for her paintings than $5 would be seen as taking advantage of people and likened her popularity to celebrity and fame = bad things. Unfortunately, her story is not an isolated case I've seen. There are many artists who would rather malnourish themselves and end up in the hospital (of course, they don't make this decision rationally, but that is the gist of it) than take some sort of day job to pay for the basics--food, clothing, shelter, etc until their art goes from a hobby to a job that pays the bills. Over the years, I've seen a few artist-friends pass out in front of me (or in situations where I've been) due to not eating for days due to not having an income from their art and refusing to get a job in order to buy food. These weren't drug or alcohol related problems, they were 100% not-eating-due-to-refusing-to-do-a-non-art-related-job-and-getting-very-sick- from-it-related. I'm talking going-to-the-hospital-in-an-ambulance sick, and being warned by the doctor sick, here, people! Not every artist from here is like this, fortunately. Buck 65, for example, worked in a local magazine store here in Halifax right up until the day before he moved to Paris because he understood that working a day job is not selling out. Six Too worked day jobs here until he moved to Montreal. They realized that you can't have a future as an artist if you debilitate yourself from malnourishment due to not having an income. I'm no Buck 65 or Six Too, but I'm smart enough to have had day jobs over the years (record store clerk, data entry clerk, media monitor, community radio station program manager, music journalist) to supplement my income while my art was at the hobby stage and not making money toward paying the bills. My closest brush with VISA commercial type of opportunities was coming in second place in a competition to score a national TV and radio campaign. Winning that competition would have meant being able to give up having a day job for a year or so; I wasn't being greedy, I was wanting to win so that I could focus more on my art for a year or so; coming in second place meant a nice chunk of change, but having to continue with a day job and continue with trying to turn my art from a making a little to no money situation to a situation ie job that paid the bills. Nowadays I don't have a day job, but I do have to bust my butt to pay the bills through various art/music-related activities: teaching sound design and music production, doing sound design and music production, licensing my songs, performing, and so on. I'm not complaining, in fact I'm thankful that I can do this. I'm lucky that all of my income comes from things related to my art. But if something (goodness forbid) happened whereby I had to go back to doing a day job to support my family, well of course I'd do it. For me, an artist taking advantage of their hard work is, plain and simple, common sense. There is no shame in it. If you're willing to be a starving artist, then you'll likely never take your art beyond the hobby level. Those who bust their butts and

A good friend also flew in from Sydney for the occasion so it was really cool to be connected by Techno. Mostly I just wanted to say to the list that in some places in the world we rarely get to hear Techno. New Zealand has had three US producers visit in the last two years. You may recall me writing in about Carl Craig last year. I go bug for Techno especially Detroit styles. It is the only music that makes me dance like Sven hugs or no hugs. It's the only music that motivates me to dance at all these days. Stacey was just brilliant, and I don't care for the politics. It was a sonic inspiration for me .. and was twice as cool cause the dance floor was full .. unlike Carl Craig. wah. While I can understand the frustrations of the DEMF line up .. I think you need to look at the greater context of what the scene is able to support. New Zealand has small population, and so a very small Techno scene. Our ability to foster our own scene, let alone have events or festivals that feature Techno artists is very very limited. On a global scale Techno is still a very underground sound. Over here where I am sitting . the DEMF does heaps to put Techno on the Map. Locally .. I would probably be upset as well. However the opportunity still remains to use the focus on the DEMF to raise the awareness of the 313 sound .. and it's affiliations. I think the Line up is that evil balance between commercial and true. However on any given day it's a line up I would very much like to see, and from a global perspective I think its a very interesting representation of how far the influences of Detroit music have traveled. I think Detroit heads have a lot of heritage to be proud of, and while there is obviously a strong local scene that is looking for representation. I think you have to appreciate that due to the musical foundations of Detroit many people from around the world now share in the positive influence. Somehow in the face of all the commercial dance scenes around the world Techno has managed to hold onto it's integrity. The artists listed are by no means heavy hitters in the commercial dance scene. They are a fairly gritty bunch of left field innovators of electronic sounds. For all the people that stand in Hart Plaza .. there are as many people all around the world who bring their attention to the goings on in Detroit. Promotion is the evil brother of Appreciation, and by all accounts the DEMF has been a constant battle from day one. I just want to send love and respect to the Festival and remind everyone having issues with the event, that some of us are still struggling to hear any sort of Techno once a year. DEMF does bring global attention. We are listening out here on the edge. .simon

I think he's doing a few RB acts as well. I imagined he was working with Britney, not K-Fed, as that's what the rumours suggested months back but then he dropped the K-Fed song here and I realised. He's the most atrocious rap artist ever, K-Fed, but the song is OK. I wish him (Disco D) well. Anybody read the interview with him in Urb? Quite revealing, I never imagined. If people want to complain about his work that's fine, but he's pieced together a living out of the opportunities presented to him, and there's no inherent shame in that. We all got to pay the bills. And frankly, if someone came to me and gave me a sack of money and said Make a record with Kevin Federline, hell yeah I'd do it. It would be a surreal experience, and it might be fun. I'm not anti-commercial, I just think that over the long run, it pays for an artist to be careful who and what he associates with. -bp True dat. Association can be a killa. On a less militant note though, I think there's an audience out there for all kinds of music. And it does take all kinds. So for cats like him, I can be glad for him no matter what he does. He's not my boy. I don't know him, so all the deep concern for his career direction seems a bit misplaced coming from me. He's a grown man making choices that affect his life (not mine). Sht for all I know he may well want to go the road to stardom. How does that suck for me again? I'm mostly glad he's not out there trying to do the same thing I am. The producer pool has been waay too populated for way too long imho anyway on this side of the techno/pop divide. PS. I like day jobs. So do chicks. K

NZ This post is for everyone having a cry baby about DEMF .. Stacey Pullen came to play in Wellington NZ the other week. By some sheer accident I ended up making a one way 16 hour road trip to see him play, and a flight home at 8am. He got on the decks at 2am and was still playing when I had to get to the airport at 7am. We are listening out here on the edge. .simon

Re: (313) Subject: (313) Record stores and stuff in Berlin.
I was in Berghain 2 weeks ago and didn't see anything from what Roman was talking about. There was short queue on the door due to couple drunk dorks who were a bit too agressive and they were the only ones who i saw not getting in. and i totally agree with security guys with this one :) ok, i was there together with my girlfriend, i don't have long hair and i am from Eastern Europe rather than Southern, but we got in quite fast. They did search people pretty carefully but that was not a big problem. The club itself looked quite large and nice. Don Williams was doin some monoish techno, that was pretty boring to me but probably could appeal to some 313 purists :), so first hours i was spending in small room with DJ Sasse (Moodmusic) playing awesome electro, house and acid sounds. later came back to see Adam Beyer and was totally blown away from his set. Very futuristic techno, something like that nu-skool tech from no-future camp. not as crazy and sharp but very groovy and interesting indeed. the groove was totally oposite of pounding relentless beats :) . it kept us dancing for quite a while! The sound system is really good there. didn't have enaugh energy to see Prosumer (Playhouse) and Mr. C playing as it was already arround 6 in the morning and we left to hotel. Watergate, Maria are also great clubs. and i can't skip Weekend and Sternradio who are located at the same building (one on 17th floor, and other in the basement) and happened to be just 200 meters away from our hotel. very good place to check whats happening is http://www.de-bug.de (go to dates and enter dates and city) visu labo Ivars Mednis Roman von Contzen wrote: hi - one thing about berghain, they seem to have a new door policy. haven't been there for several months cause i in the meantime prefer the small - more secret - events. i have heard many complaints about a new door policy at berghain. if you approach the door make shure to not come as a group of more than two persons and make shure not to wear your hair too long... if you look as if you're from southern europe - good luck! some of the guys at the door have bald heads - so they might act like they look :-) club maria has some great acts all the time - but the audience changed - it's more like the little raver boys and girls now what i still like is watergate. good music and the right audience - and becks beer! for the record shops - besides of hardwax - make shure to check out space hall at zossener strasse - they have a great collection of cds and vinyl in the basement. the venues usually reveal their upcoming acts for the weekend between monday and friday night - so you might wanna check out the berlin listing at upcoming.org which i (regarding the partys) update on a daily basis - as soon as the info about the events arrive. this weekend we have the m-nus party, rob hood and john tejada in town and buzz goree on the radio. and for the partys in general - no need to be there before two am... better be her in july than in august! no matter if the loveparade is happening on the 15th - it will again be the biggest concentration from top djs from all over the world at loveweek. anyway - have fun in berlin - and whatever you do - don't fall in love roman/berlin/germany www.energylab.de

Or check www.zitty.de, the Berlin city mag. A bit of German basic knowledge is helpful maybe. :) Under 'Veranstaltungen' (= dates) you can enter the place (Veranstaltungsort, like 'Maria') or better just click on the date and check a genre like 'Party'. Hit 'Suche starten' (Start search) and wait for a lng list of dates. :) Cheers! One with a passion so intense that it overcomes genre divides to weave an altogether original, exciting, and multi-textured musical fabric which envelops both the avid clubber and the home listener, as well as everyone in between. From an early age, Melvin Oliphant surrounded himself with a wide variety of sounds, from gospel, soul and jazz to disco, hip hop and nu wave. Growing up in Chicago, however, afforded him an opportunity many longed for but never experienced. He lived, first hand, the evolution of house music into something much more than just an underground phenomenon, and for this reason, he has a deep understanding of the history of the sound, and a clear picture of its future. For Traxx, the future of dance music rests in the hands of those who seek to expand its boundaries while preserving its past and educating its devotees. As a self-described artist of sound, Traxx morphs musical compositions into distinctive, highly emotional interpretations.
