Here's hoping that there's no big resurgence of Happy Hardcore, which
by the generational clock, is due for a revival

I'm afraid that in certain countries it never went away Kent (hangs
head in shame)

Jason

PS Excellent post by the way

2008/7/2 kent williams [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
This is an interesting topic. Interesting enought that I feel
compelled to pull some completely ungrounded theorizing out of my
 tuchis.

I think what drives these cycles at it's root is that people are like
ducks -- they form their deepest emotional attachment to the music
they hear when they're young. This applies to people who actually
make music every bit as much as it does to punters. So when it comes
their turn to provide the soundtrack for the zeitgeist, they turn
naturally to the music of their youth. They update it with influences
of everything that has happened in the meantime, changes in music
technology, etc. And this trolling through the wonder years is also
reactionary -- they use elements of what they liked about music past
to counter what they dislike about music present.

So if House music is the current vogue, it's soul and gospel roots are
an antidote to the blandness of minimal techno, combined with
nostalgia for the raw sounds of early House music. This will be
replaced in due time with something else again. And not so much
amongst us out in flyover country, but in New York, London, Berlin,
Paris, Barcelona, there's the element of fashion involved. Once
something becomes too popular amongs the hoi polloi, the in crowd
 needs to find something different.

oops. meant to say more than that.

ROFLMAO this is good to see. it reminds us that as awful as the demf
lineup was this year (moby, cool kids, other nonsense) it could be
infinitely worse.

RE: (313) Movement has competition...

2008-05-28 Thread Anton Banks (www.antonbanks.com)
To be fair, there are 'some' small local events that do better than what you
see on that flyer however they are extremely few and very far between.

For the most part though, Frank hit it dead on. At least here in the New
England area, local events seem to have musicaly gotten stuck in 2000 and never
managed to break free. Promoters tend to book the known quantities to be sure
that they bring in some numbers. Most people here only know (and show up to
hear) the acts that they've already been exposed to.

This is one of the main reasons why I'm glad that there are a couple of us
doing regular college shows in the area. Promoters generally won't bring
unknown acts to this area. So, if you can't bring Mohammad to the mountain
bring the mountain to Mohammad...

I must admit that I haven't spent much time at the actual festival so far.
Having said that, it's hard to tell what the popular tunes are because when I
walk around most of the music sounds generic and homogenous.

i don't think you understood the question.

Maybe, or maybe this is just related?

Still too early to answer arguably.

Apropos Pullen, one could say something similar about Kenny Larkin, who
still makes more than interesting music to my ears. Am I similarly compelled
by his DJ sets? Not the last few times.

RE: (313) US Mail Order

Ouch! I've never shopped in their physical store.

LOL - I just was in that shop this weekend with a 313 lurker after not
going there in well over a year (at least)
that store is in such a miserable condition
granted they've gone mostly online but they've always had problems with the
brick mortar

First off - they've always filed the records by artists FIRST name so
you'll find your Derrick May, for example, in the D section - not the M
now how often do you recall the first name of an artist but always remember
the last name? For me it's about 98% because I'm afflicted with record
store amnesia. You know, you go into a shop and forget not only the names
of the records you are looking for but your name as well.
For some reason the owner thought he had to reinvent the wheel but he made
it square.

Second, the shop was always (actually still is) packed to the gills with
multiples of the same mediocre records. The bins are so full it's hard to
flip through them. And it looks like they might have tons of different
records but they don't. They have anywhere between five and ten of the
same records. I kept coming across the same titles again and again this
weekend.

Third - they rarely if ever seem to be able to get anything you special
order

At one point they were incredibly disorganized. Never knew what they had
in stock. It would show up in their online database but then it wouldn't
be where it was supposed to be in the shop. You'd have to dig and dig and
dig and dig and dig and dig and dig... I've spent nearly an hour looking
for one fuxking record on multiple occasions. The staff would help but
then give up as well.

Their deep house and house sections - I can't tell what the hell kind of
criteria they are using to differentiate between the two. I found MAW in
the house section and really cheesy tech-house in the deep house section
along with other MAW selections. It makes no sense.

On top of all this they used to have DJs playing some of the most obnoxious
trance music so freaking loud you could barely hear what you were listening
to in the headphones at the listening stations - of which they only have
one now

Now this last time we were in there I was looking for some things they said
they had online. I couldn't find them so I went to the shop owner who was
in the middle of either tearing apart the walls of the store or rebuilding
it (seriously). He looked the items up and said they had them but they
were downstairs (in the employee only basement area). He asked me if I
wanted the items because he'd have to go look for them and that it was
easier if I just placed the order online!
Fer fxck sake - I'm in the gd store! How much easier can I make it for
them? Put the damn thing out on the shelf and you won't have to pull the
records for me.

Seems like they're selling primarily overpriced streetwear clothing now in
the store.

Oh, he also said he wanted to concentrate their stock primarily on new
releases. So I guess he's going to continually be discounting records.
That's the only positive side of things. Give me a big fat discount for
putting up with all his crazy b.s.

so, if you come to Mpls don't count on finding much in store at Vital Vinyl
(the name is a joke - most of it is NOT vital)
shopping for techno/house/etc. records in Minneapolis has become a pain
since the last good shop closed to make way for a high-rise condo

I'm glad this topic was started. Paying $20 per record after taxes,
shipping, and the miserable exchange rate is a bit much. It's pretty sad
state of affairs when this much effort can only drum up a list of two US
 stores (Gramaphone and Forced) though.

For what it's worth, check out www.vitalculture.com (formerly Vitalvinyl)
out of Minneapolis, MN. *Some* Detroit stuff comes through there but it's
probably far less than what people on this distribution would want.

 Hope this helps...

RE: (313) Cisco's Demise

2007-11-29 Thread Anton Banks (www.antonbanks.com)
That's too bad. I remember trying to find the place (and getting lots of
help from the locals) the first time I was in Japan. They had a pretty nice
selection. I even ended up trading mix tapes with one of the guys that
worked there (Morita Takeda Taniguchi). I still listen to that mix from time
to time. I also remember having lots of fun trying to pack/stuff several
pieces of vinyl in my luggage for the trip back home.

I may be back in that area soon and had been looking forward to visiting the
place again. There goes that idea...

That really is a shame. I liked that store. Hopefully, this isn't an
indicator of the Japanese techno scene.

they are combining all the stores in Tokyo into 1 store. So, therell
be techno, house, trance, reggae in one store.

Shame, I have some special memories of Cisco Techno in Shibuya.

To answer your question about the tracklist for my set, I'd say a
good number of the tracks are currently available on vinyl. The
majority is probably from my recent LP Concentricities but I
remember also playing 10 Years of Anger from my Nevermore EP on
Force Inc. There are elements of the track Foreshadowing from my
Druid Hills EP. New York School from my Stoic EP. After this I'll
Never Sleep from the eponymously titled EP. New tracks Perfecting
Theories by Destroying Them coming out on Barcelona-based Pulsewith
Recordings. Elevator Dream from Pleasure Island EP

And the last track is one of my favorites: my remix of Reynold
Persian Indigo also on Persona.

Sorry about the incorrect tag. I wasn't sure if this would be viewed as self
promotion for my show or not. I thought it better to air on the side of
caution and be told otherwise...

I do have a recording of the show. I'll post it to 313 once I've gotten the
audio on my site. Give me a week or 2.

Ken is right, I'd say this is pretty relevant! Stewart's PA was really
wicked when he came through Chicago, some time in the last year I
think.

Any chance this was recorded? I just saw the email this morning...

A good friend of mine has been doing a radio show at another station here in
Connecticut for several years now. Some of you old school 313ers may
remember him as a regular guest on the Hillbilly House show here in CT
some years ago. I have been trying to get him to post info about his show on
313 for quite some time now but it is just not in his nature... so I am
doing it for him.

'Technovisions' with O.L. From The Basement
Alternating Wednesday nights. (Next show is tomorrow night, June 13)
7:30 to 10:30 eastern US time (GMT-5:00)
Streaming audio is available at www.wrtcfm.com

For what it's worth, I highly recommend his show. Orrin has been playing
Detroit stuff since day one. I count OL as one of the people who got me
interested in radio and shaped my tastes in music. Please give him a listen,
you won't be dissapointed!

RE: (313) DJs in restaurants

2007-04-12 Thread Anton Banks \(www.antonbanks.com\)
I see it both ways. I absolutely agree that it gets kind of weak playing in
places that are only looking to boost their chic factor. You only get to
play music that is easily digestible so you might as well be a jukebox or
sirius.

On the other hand though, I played at a museum a while back. It was pretty
good except for the handful of people asking for stuff which obviously
didn't fit in with what I was playing. I've looked at playing in places like
that as a challenge to get a handfull of people to dance even though that's
not necessarily why they went there. Besides, certain settings can put you
in a position where you are the first person to play techno to a given
audience.

I guess it depend on the situation but it might not be a bad thing.

my 2 cents...

I agree with Tom. (sorry Michael)I like seeing a DJ,
though my mind instantly goes in to 'what are his
tracks' huffpuff;it's sometimes more human than a
Serius feed.
I've always wanted to be the DJ in the back of the
room setting the mood. The chilled eatery with dim
lighting and dimsum. Perhaps I just I figure my skills
are safe from deconstruction over the sounds of plates
and dinner conversation. Also just to get to that one
person, who is like me, trainspotting in the middle of
dinner conversations even if it is a satellite feed.
It's a win win- nice music, little stress, chill
environment and the occasional listener.

btw- We walked in to crate and barrel the other day
and they were playing Four Tet. I exclaimed 'I have
this!' geek meets chic.;)

spring break!

I'd like to know other people's opinion about
 this.
I was discussing this phenomenon with a friend -
 DJs playing in restaurants
and other types of places (cafés, some types of

 necessity.

My opinion was that, overall, it's annoying and a
 negative side affect of
the popularity of DJ culture. As I'm sure many
of you can attest - the
human jukebox gig can really be a drag. I had one
gig that ran for a while
and was good but eventually turned into that.
Near the end of my stint I
was told that someone there was about to threaten
 me with bodily harm
because I played something that was a bit
 leftfield. Essentially you
couldn't just ignore it. I was trying to tell my
 friend this - these types
of gigs allow trendy restaurants to bank on DJs to
 raise their hipness
factor and charge more for mediocre food. I know
 one local DJ who ranted
about DJs bringing down the scene by playing in
 coffee bars. A few weeks
after this I saw him spinning in a upscale
 beauty salon! Turns out he
seems to have a regular gig there.

His opinion was that he's been turned onto a fair
 amount of music by some
DJs in his city (Vancouver) that he's heard in
 restaurants. Now, he's a
producer himself and isn't shy about finding out
 about music he likes. I
doubt most others in restaurant would do the same.
  They eat, they talk
over the music, they pay their bill and leave. My
friend is not a DJ, has
never played records to an audience anywhere so he
 doesn't know the
  experience.

I suppose if you're getting paid you're getting
 paid but I feel there's
something just not right about DJs becoming so
 ubiquitous.

a (good) deejay has the power to set or alter the
 mood and atmosphere
in any room. now, i dont know about playing
 somewhere where
conversation is supposed to be going on at a normal
 level, such as a
restaurant. at that point a deejay would be
 essentially doing muzak.
but in a bar or coffe house or something like that
 where music can
