Sueno latino
Hi all, Just a few questions about the 'original' Sueno Latino - Sueno Latino release. If anyone has it I would appreciate a little more info on the label , tracks, release date etc I do have the Derrick May remix on a label which I think is called Solid Beat. Were there any other labels that did release the May remix? Also, I seem to be missing out on a few digest versions of 313. Anyone out there on digests notice big gaps in between them? Cheers, A Zed _ Program Co-ordinator, Ambient Zone RTRFM 92.1 Sunday Electronic Listening [http://rtrfm.com.au] Perth, W.Aust (WST) 23.00-01.00 Detroit (EST) 10.00-12.00 Frankfurt (CET)/ London(GMT)16.00-18.00
Sueno latino
Also, I did hear a track that Jeff Mills played over here a few weeks ago that sounded vaguely like another remix of the Sueno Latino riff, this time it was very electronic sounding ala Future Sound Of London - Lifeforms and had a major breakdown and buildup in the middle section (which had a long ambient section) Anyone have any idea what this could be? He also played a version that sounded like Strings of the Strings before going to play the original. This just sounded like the major keyboard riff with no kick drums. Somehow I do have Strings of the Strings of life, but this sounded slightly different. How many versions of Strings of Life were recorded? Hope this brings things back on - 313 topic, whatever is being discussed currently. Cheers, A Zed

A brief look back on the year
If there are just a few things I have to say to close an excellent year for electronic music... Jeff Mills 'Metropolis' soundtrack is a masterpiece. Other releases this year that we all have been privileged to have been in the ears of such musical masters Jeff Mills - Every Dog Has Its Day Vol 1 2 (Axis) Aztec Mystic - Jaguar remixes on 430 West and UR V/A - Clicks Cuts (Mille Plateaux) V/A - Neurokinetic (Toytronic) V/A - Staedtizism (~scape) Vladislav Delay/ Luomo releases on Force Inc. / Force Tracks and Mille Plateaux Pub - Summer and the remixes (Vertical Form) Farben - Live at the Sahara Tahoe (Klang)Salz 1-4 (Salz) all releases Lowtec - 10 strikes to 2001 (Out To Lunch) Arovane - Atol Scrap (DIN) V/A - Do you see? (Focus) Aphelion - Zungzwang (Defocus) CiM - Reference (Defocus) CiM - Service Pack (Delsin) ...and just about any other CiM track released this year ...you'll have to love me for this Simon ;). ...In no particular order since I'm no believer of Top 10 or Charts, just good releases. All these gems stand on their own merits. Hot tip for next year. Forthcoming 'The Moderator' releases. Have a good new year everyone! Well it was quite a great set, quite a lot of old material was covered through his very zany mixing style, starting with some New Order - going through some classic UR, Red Planet to early Tresor stuff and even dropping some classic electroesque ala Cybotron, Aux 88 and Fix. The crowd was quite small but dedicated. And who can ever forget those wild facial expressions whilst he was in the mix. My highlight was when he played Seawolf, followed by Nocturbulus Behaviour. Huge sound for a relatively short guy, James Pennington really rocked the floor here in Perth last Saturday. Don't miss him if he plays around your neighbourhood. One other Q I have is - when was the last time he played Detroit? How often did he play...? A_Zed

Don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but James Pennington (aka Surburban Knight as most of you are aware) is doing a DJ set tonight here in Perth and it will be quite an interesting one I'm sure. Just wondering if anyone who has seen hi DJ or live sets would like to comment. Apparently this is an Australian exclusive in the light of pulling out of a outdoor festival/gig tommorow featuring Laurent Garnier, Richie Hawtin, Josh Wink and a few others. I myself was hoping that he would do a set in a medium capacity venue instead of a huge (masses) gig, and voila he's going to do so. A_Zed

[313] Surgeon tone-shifting
In a message dated 28/09/00 4:01:55 [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Remember in Modulations, when I think Saunderson said that techno was the only way out, the only escape of such a desolate city? Well, everyone usually feels trapped somehow in some manner (if not, your probably an artist!! LOL!!), and techno was created to alleviate that feeling of being ultimately controlled... I also think that tonshifts have something to do with tribalism, and the creation of very mystical moments, for the repetition of the tribal dance sounds strange and powerful to them, and being primitive, their only option is a God who creates these magical sounds... I believe this tone-shift theory is just another way of interpreting the interaction between ecstasy and repetitive music - the actual 'trance' that techno music embodies itself through its tribal origins. This 'mystical experience' whether or not through extraneous assistance is central to the mind releasing itself into the 'singularity' that can be translated into this 'vibe' that is talked about. Personally I have felt this through the process of extensive listening to minimal techno music. The essence is within the rhythm, the key is in the dance - Its liberating and often addictive. That's why we love the music and this dance that transcends our perception. A_Zed

Tropical Underworld
For the person who enquired earlier, Tropical Underworld are Richie Hawtin And John Acquaviva. There are a few EPs on the Definitive label, which is the 'Acid House' division of Intellinet. Anyone remember those great aceed tunes by Jochem Paap, Richie, John A, Ian Pooley, Brian Zentz? In a message dated 17/08/00 7:34:46 [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Ha! You had to bring the Dadaist into this. You think your so artsy and intellectual don't you? Exactly. And you're not? Your not even going to give Juan Atkins credit? I have too many times. Its a given now. If all these genres are really some multi-faceted Detroit techno sound then why don't you see more people referring to Moodyman as a Detroit techno artist? When people talk about Aux 88 or Adult I always hear the word electro I never hear the word techno and then there's Booty Bass, some of these Booty bass artist would be offended if you called them Detroit techno. I think you can make the distinction between Detroit techno and other forms of Detroit electronic music genres. To say you cant label Detroit techno because it has no boundaries is pure nonsense. I remember in the early 90's people had no problem telling you what Detroit techno was now you get this well i don't believe in categorizing music with genre's, what really is techno anyway bla bla bal... The same people have no problem using the term soulful house or electro, its almost like their in techno denial. To use a well known analogy, this argument is just like splitting a hair 2 ways, then splitting the 2 into 4 parts etc etc. Its starting to get to staticised in semantics. The same ole argument of Its not Detroit Techno because it's Electronic or Booty or blah blah... Because 'D' stands for Detroit, if the festavile was about celebrating a new era in Detroit techno the orginizers would have called it the Detroit 'TECHNO' Music Fetsival. Again, more splitting - now into 8 parts. Isn't Techno music Electronic music anyway? Put it this way, Detroit techno is not what it used to be. you can interpret that any which way you like. Many apologies to the list for taking this argument further into senseless banter. I've been generally restraint in my posts and like to keep things on-tpoic but the full moon has just got to me - and some other people too. end of discussion. stephen. As Andy Vaz, the 'MAN' behind Background Records put it simply: i totally have to agree to zed´s words. nuthin` else to add. that`s just how it is. I should have just kept it at that. In a message dated 16/08/00 8:11:08 [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Music can evolve through a process of evolution but it may not necessarily be an improvement over the past even though music changes because of trends and technology. That was the basic premises of my argument. So you agree with me then? As I said, 'Music evolution is the gradual movement from one state to another - not neccesarily better, but not neccesarily backward either. I see progress in terms of the improvement on old ideas or methods. Technology plays an important factor in electronic music and how it has evolved and progressed over the past Century. The same applies to the evolution of the human race, we are making the transition between man and machine slowly loosing are primitive animalistic traits and evolving into a more hybrid humanoid that will be superior to homosapien. It is for the best interest of mankind. Relatively speaking this forms the basis for the discussion, but it is just one of many standards as to which to evaluate music. Intrinsically we know that a measure of improvement is based on the perception of the listener. It is not a rule set down by aesthetic merits. The dadaists and surrealists broke many conventions of old artistic ideas/ methods and set new precedents in artistic creativity. They were some of the most progressive artists around. I think this is the main dilemma for a lot of people. Some people see the various Detroit electronic genres a still being part of the Detroit TECHNO movement. I don't see it that way, I see a gradual decline in Detroit techno and rise of other electronic genre that no longer represent the Detroit techno sound. The Detroit Techno Sound is not one which has boundaries - otherwise it wouldn't be Detroit Techno. It also isn't one which is set by any one group of artists, labels and time period either. Its a constantly evolving entity and as long as the current artists are expanding the boundaries of sound design with the advent of new ideas and equipment - there would be a gradual improvement of a very multi-faceted Detroit Techno sound. The output may not be as much as previous years but QUANTITY has never been a measure for QUALITY. You have to remember that DEMF is an abbreviation for Detroit *Electronic* Music Festival. I think its great that certain Detroit artist are enjoying their 15 minutes of fame. Its very swell too, and I'm sure more would in future years to come. And they called it the 'D'ETROIT Electronic Music Festival celebrating the new era for Detroit Techno. If there was a decline in the 'Detroit' Techno sound as you claim, and other electronic genres arising out of Detroit do not represent this sound - then why did the organisers put the 'D' in the EMF? who cares? Detroit techno sounded better in the late 80's early to mid 90's. A very broad generalisation, but you're entitled to your opinion. Once again 'better' is just a relative term. Detroit Techno just sounds much different now to earlier periods. I'm sure the future of the Detroit belongs to many talented musicians and artist. The future of Detroit techno is uncertain. I certainly would like to have a lot more faith than that! A_Zed

In a message dated 12/08/00 2:20:02 [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Music evolves but it always doesn't move forward. Don't base progress on trends. Stephen, If it doesn't move forward its devolution. Music evolution is the gradual movement from one state to another - not neccesarily better, but not neccesarily backward either. Just take some extra time to think about it. And progress is a relative term isn't it? Some people like to see music progress in terms of Top10 commercial charts - some others see it as real innovation from one state to another. Such as the evolution from experimental electronics of the 70s (Kraftwerk, Neu, Ashra Temple) toward the electro-techno synth movement of the 80s (Cybotron, Cabaret Votaire, Depeche Mode). Never was stated that the current musical progress in Detroit was based on any present trends, because there are far and wide comparisons if one happens to mention the Archetype release which is heavily saturated in hard techno, the current Shake releases which are laced with hip hop grooves - and say, the latest Theo Parrish album which is a deep forray into minimal techno and house. Nonetheless, the only trend that I think is evident today seems to be that a lot of people who weren't getting into Detroit previously are embracing it more then ever now. (e.g DEMF) Is this progress??? They are becoming to intricate and sophisticated Yeah, I hate it when people say KDJ, Theo Parrish, is the future of Detroit techno. I know the funky organic tech-house sound is very trendy right now, people use the word soulful like its going out of style but who do you think your kidding? I'm sure Kevin, Juan, and Derrick could have easily looped disco classics on some primitave one shot sampler if they really wanted to, or used funky organic acoustic drum sets but that wasnt TECHNO. An 808 through some gated reverb sounded much much better. TECH-TECH-TECH-TECHNO MUSIC. What is wrong with empowering amazing artists like Kenny Dixon Jnr and Theo Parrish with the future of Detroit. They have been part of the scene for a while now and creating some of the most innovative works coming out of Detroit now. They make a different kind of techno music and perhaps that's what's grabbing the ears of many right now. The future of Detroit not only belongs to Kenny and Theo, but all the many great artists that helped shape its structure, and who are still currently making music - Stacey Pullen, Kenny Larkin, The Burden Bros. , Sean Deason, Rolando, Anthony Shakir, Claude Young, Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, Terence Dixon, Heath Brunner, Jay Denham... In a message dated 8/08/00 11:53:08 [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I agree, out side of the new plus 8 track (Electric Deluxe) I have not been to impressed with Detroit releases. I would say that the most avant techno of late has come from the likes of Marco Carola, Gaeton Parisio, and even some Adam Beyer releases (specifically the release on Conform Lost and Found??). And even the previously mentioned music is still just a refined techno. I think Detroit has become stagnant, but do not get me wrong this is not a negative view. I think the next few years will be very exciting for Detroit music and look forward to some of the next generation producers. Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Jared Wilson F.T.M. Records Well then you'd probably haven't heard: Theo Parrish - Parallel Dimensions LP (Sound Signature) Robert Hood - Nighttime World 2 (M-Plant) Shake - Songs For My Mother (Frictional) Da Sampla - Samplaholic (Moods Grooves) Sean Deason - Allegory Metaphor (Intuit Solar) Kevin Saunderson - Powerbass (Sonic Groove) I believe that Axis 20 is a true classic - those who do not immediately appreciate will do so in future, like a fine wine matures with age - and those that love it now will cherish it even more. I caught glimpses of this when I first heard Humana and then some tracks from the 'From The 21st' CD. Its great to have an entire LP of this side of Mills I really enjoy - listening music as opposed to pure dance - DJ tools/ Purpose Maker style. The music quantity coming out of Detroit isn't as high volume as the golden years of 1991-95, however the class is still abundant for what is released. Now - The new Stacey Pullen LP. I wonder what the verdict is going to be - if it is in the direction of his last release 2 years ago on Black Flag or .otherwise. Sorry, a bit of a late reply on this, but in complementing the techno Geminis, I'd have to mention the presence of the Virgo amongst electronic circles. I'm one, my co-host Emma Love is one as well (share the same birthday and taste in music), Andrew Duke is another Virgo...also don't forget that Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson are indeed Virgos. 618 313'ers: Interface Change of Night/ Apologies Slightly OT! Part 2
Another message for Perth 313'ers RE: Interface Well as everyone should know there are club owners and there are club owners (we should all know about!). Anyway the change of management has sought for bands to play on some of the previously held DJ slots at PICA club. And Interface on Wed was meant to be moved to Tues night, but this time not until August 1st apparently. Will confirm with those on the Interface mailing list with the actuality of the night. (Anyone in Perth who wants to be on this list just email me, if you are not already on it) Meanwhile there is a possibility of having a night at (ex)-Players club soon, so keep all your fingers crossed for preserving deep and minimal techno around here in Perth. More 313 related, and I have been extremely busy/ behind on reading backlogs and replying to the obvious threads. Nevertheless since I'm posting this now I should recommend a few records which have been spinning on the wheels lately: Octave One - Black Water (430 West) Real flash back to 430 West heyday sounds from the Burden Bros. They just seamlessly manage to get the groove on in a distinct way. Shades of that Dark Energy record on UR. How come this hasn't been talked about yet on 313? Delayvarience/Techniker split (Deepchord) Yes, yet another foray into BC/CR related territory. Some serious toneshifting here for the introverts. ;`) Villalobos - Sense Club (Perlon) Another great release by Ricardo Villalobos. Somewhat different from his other works - Lo Fi Stereo and Playhouse/ concentrating on that super dry Perlon sound. Par Excellence. Rick Wade - Harmonie Project (Viva) Hmm, a rather quirky release that would sit well as a Moods/ Grooves house release, but this time on a bigger label Viva. This goes into deep territory as usual/ also features a few loopy tracks which he obviously enjoys. Why didn't he play more of this stuff when he DJ-ed here recently? DUB I massive or minute..?
In a message dated 11/07/00 7:06:52 [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Oh, and Rampe D records also has a strong dub influence Frankfurt/Berlin seems to have a strong raggae and dub scene. I know that's stating the obvious but I've been curious as to why this is so. Is there a large immigrant population from Trinidad/Jamaica like there is in the UK? Yes I heard somewhere that the largest consumption of dub and reggae records outside of Jamaica is in Germany, esp Berlin and Frankfurt. What's the correlation actually - i) shared love of bass heavy and delayed fx music ii) extremely high quality herbals, iii) both or iv) other One can definitely hear the strong influences of Perry and Tubby in the records of Basic Channel, Chain Reaction, ~Scape, DIN, Rhythm Sound/Tikiman/ Main St. Certainly I wouldn't go as far to say that Berlin has shared weather patterns with Jamaica- or is it some other unperceived metaphysical connection? That put forward, I can't recommend more the relatively new albm on Stefan Betke's (Pole) label Staedizm. Amazing new wave of dub textures from artists such as Vlad Delay, Modernist, Pole, Kit Clayton etc. A_Zed _ Program Co-ordinator, Ambient Zone RTRFM 92.1 Sunday Electronic Listening [http://rtrfm.ii.net] Perth, W.Aust (WST) 23.00-01.00 Detroit (EST) 10.00-12.00 Frankfurt (CET)/ London(GMT)16.00-18.00

Re: [313] Classic Kraftwerk Find/New Wave suggestions
My favourites in that New Wave era (now obviously Oldwave) which had distinct synths - Talking Heads, Talk Talk, Gary Numan, Cabaret Voltaire, Human League and...the first album by Howard Jones - Human Lib around '83 which really got me kickstarted into electronic music at a tender young age. Re: [313] Detroit Techno Art
In a message dated 23/06/00 3:13:13 [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Kandinsky was a russian artist but the russians hated him because they were all gung-ho proletariet socialists and had really strong opinions about what should be considered art (i.e. suprematist and constructivist movements fronted by kasmir maleavich). Kandinsky was into more expressionist stuff that the russians considered totally frivolous, so he ended up spending most of his life in germany. But what I thought was coolest thing about his work was trying to capture music and sound in painting. he also did some work with russian comoposer Alexander Scriabin. Scriabin had some really interesting ideas and for a while was trying to create music that crossed the human senses. sounds that invoked a sense of color rather than sound- i.e. controlled synesthesia. he also started a project to build a big color organ that played lights along w/notes - like from the end of Close Encounters movie except some 50 years earlier. I'm not even all that familiar w/ his music, but he had some really interesting ideas and theories- would recommend looking him up sometime. Agreed. Malevich and Kandinsky for me reflect quite a lot of the vision of techno music, as denoted by the Futurist and Suprematists work. Some of the colour schemes and minimalism in these works are just amazing; one can see the parralels of rejection by mainstream culture - almost that which at the same time is a recurring theme in the wider appreciation of techno music. Speaking about music/ sound / synaesthesia in art forms, I have been personally working with a local (ex-Russian) computer animator called Illya Nikolai who does some equally amazing and unprecedented computer art which I think is the epitomy of any digitally-related animation/ art. Broadcasting locally here on an independent TV station Channel 31 but soon to take on all areas of the often cheesy world of techno-related computer animation. If you think all those X-Mix videos were alright, multiply the scope by 3 zeros and you get what I mean. Check it out, downloads and all. Any electronic artists or labels that might be interested in putting out some music on Illya's DVM trademark format (music on a DVD which is also CD-Rom compatible), you can get in touch with me personally for more details. http://www.liquidmusic.com.au/ Cheers, A_Zed _ Program Co-ordinator, Ambient Zone RTRFM 92.1 Sunday Electronic Listening [http://rtrfm.ii.net] Perth, W.Aust (WST) 23.00-01.00 Detroit (EST) 10.00-12.00 Frankfurt (CET)/ London(GMT)16.00-18.00

In a message dated 18/06/00 10:54:55 [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Can anything 6 months old be considered classic? ho ho the funniest man on 313 -jason Ho ho indeed! ;`) Well, anything already officially released can be called a classic in my view. I tend to use the word instant classic for anything I hear on first few listens that is truly brilliant. And when left some time to mature these tracks/ releases can really reach another sublime level of appreciation - however the tracks I will mainly feature tonight will be of course well matured tracks. I suppose the purpose of the Classic Rewind series is to dig up a side of electronic music which may have been confined to the historical memory vaults by those who were around at the time, or to be made available to those who are fairly new to this form music and want to have an opportunity to listen back in time to what was. Just following on from the Classic Rewind which started on the program at the turn of the century when I decided to dedicate the last 2 shows of the '90s to the best electronic music released during the decade. This was a very difficult thing to do - compressing 10 years worth of great music into 4 hrs, but there is no limit to this series and I will be doing flashback specials every now and then, when the need arises to drag that ole wax or cd from the archives. When the Ambient Zone website is established soon, I'll make the show archives (playlists) available on line. In future I will also be hoping to set up MP3 streaming archives of shows for anyone that missed it during the week. Stay tuned, and thanks again to everyone who has supported the program (on behalf of myself and the lovely co-host Emma Love). For some reason also, no one's cared to mentioned the Depth Charge 1-3 comps on Submerge, basically detailing the history of music by UR, Acid Rain, Red Planet, Octave One, Andre Holland etc etc It has also some excellent unreleased tracks by all the class producers. Not only does your opinion hold no value, it also lacks intelligence. It is your closed-mindedness that keeps the world from being a nice place to live. No one cares about how you perceive american audiences- YOU are the epidemy of cheesey and wack for even suggesting such a lame opinion on this list. And while you are on your march against american audiences, and talking like you know about it-although you are across the ocean and dont live here and obviously are getting you opinion from the BBC- why dont you go listen to some trance. Same old story. Incredibly hippocritical statements from the obviously ill-informed. I've been a bit restraint on replying to some obviously inane people invading this list recently with other motives apart from music. But this really is enough. Its almost factual that the techno scene in Detroit and other US cities have been well supported from Europe and other overseas nations. Its inextricably linked. The Frankfurt-Berlin-Detroit Trans-Atlantic connection is well documented as a huge stepping stone for this music to be appreciated on its home soil. This has at some time or rather, involved all the major Detroit producers including Blake Baxter, Eddie F Fowlkes, Juan Atkins, Carl Craig, Robert Hood, Jeff Mills, UR/Mad Mike etc. A_Zed _ Program Co-ordinator, Ambient Zone RTRFM 92.1 Sunday Electronic Listening [http://rtrfm.ii.net] Perth, W.Aust (WST) 23.00-01.00 Detroit (EST) 10.00-12.00 Frankfurt (CET)/ London(GMT)16.00-18.00

Re: [313] What Is Up With 313?
In a message dated 11/06/00 8:16:36 [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: It's interesting as 'trance' has changed in its definition over time so that a diversity of artists and music from different subcultures and generations now goes under that title. I remember someone saying that Waveform Transmission Vol 1 was 'trancey' - I still don't hear that. But now when people say 'techno trance' I think of someone like Timo Maas - commercial trance with elements of commercial techno, very derivative. Even Seb Fontaine is going down that route. It may be a personal thing, but I ain't feeling it. And, as for Oliver Lieb, I put him, rightly and wrongly, in the same bracket as Moby. I just don't get him at all. The most soul-less 'underground' DJ and producer I have ever heard. My understanding of trance music has always been in the core of reptitive rhythm-ic sounds which are capable of inducing that 'state of mind' which is trancendent of normal conciousness. Alright I might be sounding a bit spiritual here, but isn't this music also intertwined with spirituality anyway? So using this as a basis, I always thought of trance music as mostly techno related rhythms of the minimal repetition field - Maurizio/ Basic Channel/ Chain Reaction and anything in vein of tribal drumming/ rhythms and shamanistic or religious rituals. Dub music has also always had a heavy trance element in its intent. And I hear a lot of native American Indian trance-like percussions in 313 music especially in UR (Mad Mike's one-half native indian), Rolando, Octave One, Dark Energy... Most of techno is trance-based music, but not the TRANCE music that is heavily genre-rised and marketed by the media (speed-garage, jungle and other inane marketing categories). So before anyone else gets caught up in any semantic or genre misunderstandings, lets dispose of the Trance marketed genre and hopefully talk about the music without its media underpinnings A_Zed _ Program Co-ordinator, Ambient Zone RTRFM 92.1 Sunday Electronic Listening [http://rtrfm.ii.net] Perth, W.Aust (WST) 23.00-01.00 Detroit (EST) 10.00-12.00 Frankfurt (CET)/ London(GMT)16.00-18.00

Check his Frequensize LP or any EP on Machine Codes and Rephlex (Universal Indicator) for some of that crazy techno touch. He has also got some music on the Diatomyc label (RS off shoot). Struck by that amazing label that is Vertical Form, I have been on a mission to uncover the identity of the mysery artist Agent Cooper, from VF 002 Rapaciolli/ Agent Cooper split.
