Indeed, but if we're including them as psychedelic then it's
only fair that Mandrill get a mention.

Also, peeps looking for psychedelic soul should keep an eye
out for other Charles Stepney productions as well as his
Rotary Connection stuff, in particular his later productions
for Cadet e.g. the Phil Upchurch solo albums, are deep.

Earth Wind and Fire's first album (eponymously titled) is
also excellent - v. much on an early Funkadelic tip and also
highly sampled - 'Bad Tune' is a killer - with a wicked Kalimba intro!

Another psychedelic tip (though more on a jazz angle) is Tom
Scott's sixties stuff on Impulse, clearly influenced by West
Coast Psyche rock of the time. Check 'The Honeysuckle Breeze'
and 'Rural Still Life'. Pete Rock used 'Today' off the former

Just discovered Osmium and it might be one of Parliament's best albums by far
(and God knows they're usually ace) ; found a couple of Rotary Connection
tracks and this definitely goes straight to the shopping basket. I have a
record by Mandrill, wasn't too enthusiastic about it but I need to listen to it
again. EWF - it's hard to find their earlier (good) stuff, usually it's just
crappy collections.

Upcoming Release: Around December 15, 2004 Messed-up funky jazz from an
obscure early 70s UK group -- and an album that really lives up to its trippy
cover! The tracks are all long and stretched out -- with lots of organ, sax,
and spaced out drums -- and the overall style is a mix of dub-heavy funk, Afro
jazz, and a bit of jazz rock jamming! There's a bit of vocals on the album, but
overall most of the set is instrumental -- in a really right on and progressive
style that we totally love. This is the kind of record that always got passed
by in the 80s when everyone was looking for hard James Brown grooves, but which
is very much in fashion now with the blunted funky crowd. Cuts include Hymn To
Mother Earth, Another Country, Disillusioned Man, and Mercy (Variation
No. 1).

Or so they say on Dusty Grooves, my new best friend. Sounds good - thanks for
the tip !

Might be a stupid answer, but when burning a CD, you have a number of options

An annoying problem I have with Live .asd files is when you
burn them to a cd and the burned filename gets truncated
because of the filename length restrictions of the cd format
the .wav file won't read the .asd file when you copy the file
back to your hard drive and you have to rewarp it. Of course
the answer is to keep the filenames short, but I like to
include the artist, track title and label in my filenames to
make it easier for sorting. Ableton really needs to set it up
so you can copy warp markers between clips easily.

Even better would be if they released the file specification
so people could write .asd warper utilities. Then I can
finally realize my dream of warping tracks on my pocket pc
 while I'm at work!

sets, the warp markers don't seem to show up, and I still have to
rewarp them. Am I doing something wrong? Usually the way I do it is
copy the .wav and .asd file into the directory I use for
 the set, and
Ableton shows a symbol that seems to imply it recognizes the .asd
file, but when I pull it in - no warp.

 David.

Is there a possibility you're saving/moving/copying them as
 'read only'
 files?
they don't work then for some reason - not sure why.

But you SHOULD definitely be able to save them and use them whenever.

 Maybe others might know more?

Just curious : here in France, and I think in a number of other european
countries, there are some ads inviting people to move to Canada... Is it the
same in the US ? Or is it just a move from the french-speaking states in Canada
to bring more french people there and balance the anglophones ?

But strictly Detroit :
DETROIT-The Detroit Tourism Board is scaling back the city-sponsored
Hidden Detroit program following the deaths of 24 tourists in the past
month, city officials announced Monday. The campaign did draw tourists
to historically significant places that usually go unnoticed, like the
rough-and-tumble honky-tonks of Ypsilanti and the site of the 1967
riots, tourism board director Lauren Essleman said. But ultimately,
unfolding the free 'Detroit Off The Beaten Path' maps in the middle of
the Purple Gang's old turf was not a good idea. Essleman said that, in
addition to the 24 tourists, the program resulted in the loss of more
than 60 vehicles.

RE: (313) Unclassics CD

2004-10-18 Thread Cobert, Gwendal
No tracklisting yet, but some hints in the blurb from their newsletter :
Why UNCLASSICS? That's easy: they ain't the usual disco suspects! Morgan
Geist, one half of the acclaimed production duo Metro Area and owner of the
innovative Environ label, has lovingly assembled this debut DJ mix featuring
a selection of his favorite obscure electronic funk and disco tracks from
1978-1985.

UNCLASSICS will thrill dusty-fingered disco connoisseurs, hip lifestylers
and electro neophytes alike. It's a perfectly-mixed fix of rare Italodisco
(Alexander Robotnick-produced Go On Do It by Victor or Plastic Mode's
Baja Imperial), hot European boogie (Geist's own remix of Dance Reaction's
Disco Train), and even Soviet cosmic funk (Zoviet's Pacific) blended
together seamlessly and incorporating Geist's studio mastery. Such
spaced-out rarities (most available for the first time on CD) have turned
heads and opened minds when played in sets from innovative DJs like Metro
Area, disco don Daniel Wang (Balihu), cult hero DJ Harvey (ex-Ministry of
Sound) and DJ I-F (the master behind the Mixed Up in the Hague mix CD).

Despite the newest of these tracks approaching 20 years old, the playful
experimentation and raw grooves sound fresher than most of the music being
played in clubs today. This collection is guaranteed to stay ahead of the DJ
mix CD curve with its innovative selection, painstaking remastering and
eye-catching design by Julian Morey (Factory Records, The Hacienda, VOGUE).

Yes, that is very true for Australia, but I have no figures.
Alicia Keys' latest record is considered a commercial failure (to BMG's

her Australian shows have sold out.
I think people - young people - are putting money in mobile phones and so
don't have as much money for records. They download. Also people spend money
on live shows and download music. Many a musician says that touring, not
record sales, is their main source of income these days.
Australia has always had a strong live circuit though.

There does seem to be a trend for underground acts to set themselves

there has been a lot of discussion recently about how to get the younger
(american) generation to listen to techno and that the majority of this list
are over 25 (myself included).

ah, the irony - in my experience,
techno/house/electro is music that only young people listen to, those under 25,
as they are the demographic that still go out to clubs (although there are
fewer clubs and nights for them to go to - not one regular techno night on a
saturday in dublin, that says something). it seems to be music that you are
supposed to grow out of. most of my friends used to go to clubs, but would now
rather eat their own flesh than listen to techno.
is it different in america and britain? (my only experiences of going out in
england are lost parties).

in ireland, it is music that most people grow out of, unless they are a
dj/producer, as priorities change - it's looked upon with disdain, as juvenile
pap. even my girlfriend, who loves this music, is starting to find it
monotonous and grating. on the rare occasions when a babysitter is available
and we venture out, there is a sense of unease as we usually seem to be around
a decade older than the rest of club crowd in dublin.

my father is still listening to the music of his youth - jerry lee lweis, ray
charles - but will we still be listening techno in our 60s? does this stuff
have longevity?

a friend of
mine, a bob dylan fanatic, believes that people will still be listening to mr
zimmerman in 300 years, can the same be said for atkins, may et al?

it
gets harder and harder to enjoy the music when you are in a shrinking minority,
although i don't have to worry about getting shot when i go out jack palancing.
that puts my agonising in perspective. fooking hell, right to bear arms? no
thanks!

favourite track of moment: sterac 'asphyx', a rarity that i managed to pick up
recently, even though it has a dodgy trance feel off it (maybe that's why i
love it!).

and that aii track off the narita 'terminal one' 12 comes second with
connective zone's 'function' track third. not that you care, but i've had my
fun and that's all that matters.

right, enough of my blathering, back to the music and lurking for me.

Maybe something stupid : Amazon now offers Marketplace services. Here in
France, it seems a good number of the sellers are professional, and they're
sending from the US... And it's relatively cheap : for example, Caiman
(www.caiman.com) charged me EUR2.49 for a single CD, that took about 2 weeks to
cross the Atlantic... So maybe there's something there ? Maybe there's also a
loophole in taxes, different laws for some US states ?

Hi Alex,
Shipping by the Pallet is what makes things much cheaper when shipping

We have starting an action since we know the exclusion of Juan Atkins from the
Michigan Art Committee 'awards' due to his actual location.
The problem is now resolved. We have just receiving a mail who inform us that
the correction will be available soon as possible.
Now, the international achievement is for Juan atkins, Derrick May and Kevin
Saunderson. Reowned as 'The Belleville three'.

In an eerily possible near-future, where cities are heavily
controlled and only accessible through checkpoints, people
cannot travel unless they have papelles (special travel
insurance). Beyond these cities are shanty towns jammed with
non-citizens who lack the necessary papers and whose lives are
severely restricted. When an investigator (Tim Robbins) is sent

probably the best full length so far this year (to continue my trend of

P.S. Just listening to the new Cari Lekebusch LP on Truesoul, anyone

(the second one was), it really showed how good are Kraftwerk tunes, the way

Anyone heard or seen this documentary? Came out around 97-98
Below is a partial review of it (includes comments of another
 documentaryas well)

 __

Universal Techno, directed by Dominique Deluze last year, covering the
scenes in Europe, USA and Japan. The film started with Richard D James
wandering in some eerie catacombs, explaining how it feels like
 home, and
eventually almost looked like Who's Who in Techno, featuring
 Derrick May,
Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins, Kenny Larkin, Jeff Mills, even Mike
 Banks(who only agreed to be interviewed with his face covered);
 from Europe
(vastly overrated but for this feature essential, I guess) Sven Väth,
Autechre (touring in Barcelona), Mark Bell of (and these days also
 all of)
LFO, Steve Beckett of Warp Records; and from Japan, Ken Ishii.

All in all, and what usually troubles all features of this kind, the
documentary felt at times too patchy, giving artists only a chance to
provide some memorable soundbites at their best (the scene with
 Derrick May
and his visual designer giving a weird rap on the tenth planet of
solarsystem was great!); with some interesting glimpes to the
 streets of Detroit
(which looked at times like some post-apocalyptic war zone, really),
Sheffield and Tokyo, and of course to some sublime-looking raves,
parties(Jeff Mills in all-DJ action, mmm...), gigs and videos (Ken
Ishii's'Extra', LFO's 'Tied Up' and Autechre's 'Second Bad Vilbel').

And as usually, the omissions were almost as remarkable as what was
featured there: where were for example Robert Hood, Carl Craig or
RichieHawtin; all jungle and trip hop (or hardcore) artists; or
 minimalists like
Maurizio and Sähkö/Panasonic posse (I must be biased here...) -- but
obviously it's totally impossible to cover all scene in merely an
 hour.

his new record, popkiller, is terrible. The songs themselves are alright, if a
little redundant considering his body of work. But then he went and put
vocals on top of all of them, ah, his vocals make richie's vocals on closer
seem deep. Techno guys should probably never add their own vocals on their
records. Luke Slater another good cause in point.Maybe having a sample of
somebody else saying something would be alright, I like and play alot of music
with distorted and messed up vocals/call response. But I sort of don't want
to know techno guys take on poetry, love, or mysticism. Well I have to take
that half way back, I can take Dj rush's meandering babble any day. Generally

It should be noted that legendary guitarist Robert Quine (most notably a
Voidoid, later played for Lou Reed) passed away last week, apparently via
suicide.
Didn't want to see it go unmentioned in the wake of other, perhaps more
identifiable, persons having passed recently.
Brilliant, manic guitar.

Too bad they were all Fascists - wrong as far as I know, many of them were,
Marinetti, their leader, was, but their relationship was more complex than
that... Marinetti was barely tolerated by Mussolini, and very soon several
movements emerged over the world (esp Russia and South America), who took care
of retaining the main ideas behind futurism while making themselves very
distinct politically ; many were closer to communism, in fact.

I think space has become a dated concept as people realise that not even the
present is really enjoyable. Wars, poverty, debts, pollution... Why being
exited about the future? It might suck even more...

Maybe it's time for some Post-Futurism. Or maybe not... this is what I found
about Futurism as an art form:

Futurism was an international art movement founded in Italy in 1909. It was
(and is) a refreshing contrast to the weepy sentimentalism of Romanticism.
The Futurists loved speed, noise, machines, pollution, and cities; they
embraced the exciting new world that was then upon them rather than
hypocritically enjoying the modern world's comforts while loudly denouncing
the forces that made them possible. Fearing and attacking technology has
become almost second nature to many people today; the Futurist manifestos
show us an alternative philosophy. Too bad they were all Fascists.
http://www.unknown.nu/futurism/
Manifesto of Futurism
1. We intend to sing the love of danger, the habit of energy and
fearlessness.
2. Courage, audacity, and revolt will be essential elements of our poetry.
3. Up to now literature has exalted a pensive immobility, ecstasy, and
sleep. We intend to exalt aggresive action, a feverish insomnia, the racer's
stride, the mortal leap, the punch and the slap.
4. We affirm that the world's magnificence has been enriched by a new
beauty: the beauty of speed. A racing car whose hood is adorned with great
pipes, like serpents of explosive breath-a roaring car that seems to ride on
grapeshot is more beautiful than the Victory of Samothrace.
5. We want to hymn the man at the wheel, who hurls the lance of his spirit
across the Earth, along the circle of its orbit.
6. The poet must spend himself with ardor, splendor, and generosity, to
swell the enthusiastic fervor of the primordial elements.
7. Except in struggle, there is no more beauty. No work without an
aggressive character can be a masterpiece. Poetry must be conceived as a
violent attack on unknown forces, to reduce and prostrate them before man.
8. We stand on the last promontory of the centuries!... Why should we look
back, when what we want is to break down the mysterious doors of the
Impossible? Time and Space died yesterday. We already live in the absolute,
because we have created eternal, omnipresent speed.
9. We will glorify war-the world's only hygiene-militarism, patriotism, the
destructive gesture of freedom-bringers, beautiful ideas worth dying for,
and scorn for woman.
10. We will destroy the museums, libraries, academies of every kind, will
fight moralism, feminism, every opportunistic or utilitarian cowardice.
11. We will sing of great crowds excited by work, by pleasure, and by riot;
we will sing of the multicolored, polyphonic tides of revolution in the
modern capitals; we will sing of the vibrant nightly fervor of arsenals and
shipyards blazing with violent electric moons; greedy railway stations that
devour smoke-plumed serpents; factories hung on clouds by the crooked lines
of their smoke; bridges that stride the rivers like giant gymnasts, flashing
in the sun with a glitter of knives; adventurous steamers that sniff the
horizon; deep-chested locomotives whose wheels paw the tracks like the
hooves of enormous steel horses bridled by tubing; and the sleek flight of
planes whose propellers chatter in the wind like banners and seem to cheer
like an enthusiastic crowd.

whatever happened to the future?
did it become an outdated concept?

as I sat watching Matthew Herbert and his bag of crisps band last night, I
realised I was watching a 50 year old (at least) show.

then, I thought, all the bands I've seen lately have harked to the past,
really heavily. All the records I buy are obsessed with the past, or are
old.

even techno isn't futuristic any more. Jeff Mills scores films from the
'20's, Red Planet titles are all about native american indian issues,
instead of sex in zero gravity or journey to the martian polar
cap.. There's no time, space, transmat business anymore. I mean,

speaking of which, wasn't TP calling it quits at the end of 2002 or 2003?

To summarize briefly, he was going to retire for religious reasons - issues
with the rave scene (and more), but then opted to adjust his musical policy
and continue to do things on terms he could feel comfortable with. He is
still DJing quite actively, but with more of a focus on gospel house, and
while I've not heard him since the shift, all reports indicate he still
rocks it.

Please let's not turn this into another opportunity to crap on Terrence's
religiosity. He's had a very difficult and intense life, and if his
ever-increasing devotion to God makes him happy, then I'm happy for him.
Yeah, he can get a bit preachy about it, but if you were to speak to him in
person about it you'd know that he's not trying to impose his views on
anyone - he's just very enthused about what he believes. Or at least that's
how I see it.

I can't believe Kraftwerk wouldn't drop their fee, and just do it for a

gift, but hey I don't know the full story.

Oh come on... Do you know what must cost them to put on a

 show of that

size and technical prowess, both with their exceedingly high

 standards

of audio and video quality? I mean, their shows are utterly

mindblowing for good reasons, that can't be cheap to put on. I think

offering a discount is one thing, but come-on.. their live show is so

excellent because of attention to every detail, that takes a lot of

work, prep and help.. which in a modern age translates into money for

equipment, set, transportation, crew, etc. If you are talking just

about the artists fee though, that is something I would hope

 they would

consider reducing, since it is a FREE event afterall.

Believe me I think they would be the ULTIMATE act at a

 Detroit movement

festival.. but to expect them to do it for free is just unrealistic.

Should we start a letter-writing campaign to Kraftwerk though, to get

them to reconsider and try to work it out and make it possible? :)

Everybody mail them a postcard from where you're from.. email never

has the same effect. What's a street address to reach them?

A cool thing about techno is that it never went down that

 path, although a

 truly visual

representation of techno is probably waiting to happen - I

 always pictured

the coolest scenes from Drexciya making it into videos, kind

 of a window

into that world, an underwater dance party... and I guess

 it's people like

Jeff who are leading the charge with his DVD.

As I mentioned once before on this list - there used to be a

 website that

had videos of techno artists but is no longer in operation.

It's too bad because they had Carl Craig's Televised Green

 Smoke video -

 which was very cool.

I'd love to see some collection on DVD of Detroit

 techno/house videos past

 and present.

With all the underground video makers and people like Michel

 Gondry and

such into cutting edge/underground music you'd think someone would be

approaching some techno heads to make videos. I don't mean some shaky

hand-held DV shot in a dark club but actual music videos with

 concepts and

higher production. Anyone remember the Inner City videos? If

 not check them

 out on KMS's website.

I know - nowadays it takes major label money to make most videos but I

don't think this is entirely true anymore with the technology

 and talent

 available

 the world went edit mad

 right mess of

the labels, 01 has the labels of 02 and vice versa.

(these are good edits btw I think, worth having, little

 extended bits, few

crazy fx etc). they made 'slicks' spacebass sound much better!

 BUT, there's a track on there that I don't recognise that I'm

 trying to

 find out what it is..

It's the 2nd track on the side that has two tracks on (theres

 only one side

with 2 tracks) and it's a killer boogie number that Mood II

 Swing sampled

for one of their best tracks. anyone know?

also, do you remember the Magick Kuts bootleg 12's that were

 about a few

years ago? I think these might be the same guys as them, but

 just doing

more boogie/disco tracks that have been famously sampled in house, as

opposed to the others which were more electronic oddities..

and, another thing, I managed to get an Omar S 002 12 -

 not listened yet

 - is there Omar01?

 that's it today, I promise.

what is the difference between an edit and a remix ???

A re-edit, in the original sense of the word, uses only the final

two-channel (stereo) recording of a song, which is then cut

 up, extended,

shortened, reversed, put through effects etc. These days this

 would most

likely be done in audio software like Pro Tools, Logic or

 Cubase, but in the

old days it would be done by cutting and splicing

 quarter-inch reel-to-reel

 tape.

A remix, on the other hand, is generally done by someone

 who's been given

access to the original multi-track tape (in the old days) or

 individual

sounds, loops, samples, beats etc (today). The remixer can

 then use as many

or as few of the original building blocks of the song as they like, in

conjunction with musical elements created themselves, to

 create a new track

which uses any number of parts of the original.

The primary difference being that anyone with a copy of the

 record can do

their own 'edit', but to do a proper 'remix' you need the

 original producer

to provide you with the song's original 'building blocks' in

 isolation.

 Cheers,

 Tom

  tape.

A remix, on the other hand, is generally done by someone

  who's been given

access to the original multi-track tape (in the old days) or

  individual

sounds, loops, samples, beats etc (today). The remixer can

  then use as many

or as few of the original building blocks of the song as

 they like, in

conjunction with musical elements created themselves, to

  create a new track

which uses any number of parts of the original.

The primary difference being that anyone with a copy of the

  record can do

their own 'edit', but to do a proper 'remix' you need the

  original producer

to provide you with the song's original 'building blocks' in

  isolation.

  Cheers,

  Tom

OK let's big it up for Force Inc.!!!

My favourite Force Inc. has to be the Daft Punk remix of Ian Pooley's

'Chord Memory'. That's closely followed by the Livingstone EP by Luomo

on Force Tracks, which I can't seem to find anywhere now.

 Deck The House

by Akufen is a fave too. Can't remember anmy others.

Subject: (313) regarding the Force Inc. family situation

There has been talk recently on the 313 and IDM lists

regarding the Force Inc family situation and

postulations being made. Being a label owner myself

(Cognition Audioworks), it distressed me to see such

talk (I'm sure most label owners would like to see

their label succeed and have all their artists be happy

and successful and would not want to see negative

postulations being made). I emailed Jon Berry (who was

the North American representative for the Force Inc.

family until he left to start his own

  publicity/representation company (Regenerate Industries)) to

see if he (Jon) could clarify things on behalf of Achim

(Force Inc. family label owner). Below is Jon Berry's reply:

The past year hasn't been easy for Achim Szepanski

(the owner) and the Force Inc. family. I am not at

liberty to go into the details, but there has been a

level of uncertainty of the labels future for some time.

I will say this. Through my years of knowing him,

Achim has never had any premeditated intention of

ripping an artist off, nor has he ever been very

communicative over the years with the artists on the

label - particularly over this past year. It was an

honor to work for the man, and his contribution to

electronic music over the years remains unparalleled.

Unfortunately, rumors and truths leave me saddened for both

the artists and the labels hopeful future.

I'm trying to offer the best spread between size and quality on my
 netlabels (www.rohformat.de, www.primative.net/schleudertrauma/
shameless self promotion - GOTCHA! ;). That's actually vbr mp3's
compressed with lame 3.90.3 codec using the --alt-preset standard
setting. Right now i'm almost alone with vbr in the netlabel
 scene. Many
others still use lame compressed 192kb HQ mp3's. I would also love to
offer .ogg which i consider to be way better, qualitywise -
 it's not yet
spread broadly enough. Since a lot of people in our
 audience are using
Traktor/FS i won't move to .ogg before N.I. will support it.

On a sidenote, the difference between lame --alt-preset
 standard or .ogg
and lossless formats isn't significant enough to approach our
 users with
lossless compressed files that are up to 7 times bigger. Many
 people who
download music from netlabels aren't flatrate or highspeed internet
users. Maybe in some years the public request for lossless
 files will be
strong enough to make the step. I don't see that for now as
 it's also a
storageproblem, and hd's aren't up for this task yet ;)

I personally think that discussion about file compression techniques
should be hold under seperate cover (bet that'd be a nice flamewar,
 heh...)

The thing that worries me most about apple etc, they all try to punish
the user to use their own software to play their native formats. It's
the same as with cd copy protection, the customers don't want to have
limited access to products they buy. Back to aac (e.g.), converting
between compressed formats doesn't make sense and are NO
 option as some
 industry people might tell us.

About the bandwidth, storage space vs quality problem:

Of course, bigger files have higher fixed costs. But why is there no
option for the customers to choose buying better quality for a higher
price? I bet the industry assumes that the usual customer is
 a dumbo and
satisfied with the crap they sell there (pity, that's even true :/ ).
Well, where is this heading to? I bet it needs some group
 effort in the
underground, i.e. a foundation of independant labels
 offering music in
reasonable quality. Instead, i have to learn that Tresor
 joins apple :(

The only thing that makes me a little bit happy about the situation:

the amount of hits on netlabel websites is steadily growing.
 So should i
 cry or laugh?..

 My 2,5 €cent.

 Ronny

two threads coming together at the same time...

so as there are a lot of independent label runners on this
list who might be considering digital distribution what
format do you think digital releases should be released in?

high bit rate lossy compressed format (mp3/ogg/aac) or full
  width wavs/aiffs?

i favour the latter. i have the bandwidth tho.

  robin...

  - Too bad the quality offered by Apple is still way below
  enjoyable or
  - even playable :( Until the point they start selling
 music encoded
  - with reasonable codecs in a file format that can be used by any
  - application i
  - can only say:
  -
  - IT SUCKS.
  -
  - Even if the entire 313 music history would be available there.
  -
  - Thx for listening,

RE: (313) The right download format

2004-02-10 Thread Cobert, Gwendal
It's also more risky. If you are downloading your 40

 megabyte Lossless song

and halfway through the connection breaks, then it has to be

 downloaded again,

adding 20 cents to the cost. And we know that connections

 break often enough

for this to be a problem.

Can't you simply resume your file ? most download managers allow it, and so do
FTPs and Soulseek... interesting take on the cost though, I didn't think it
would be that expensive to transfer files !

all i know is that amp fiddler's music is not in any way
groundbreaking but we cant keep a single 12 with his name on it
in stock. people who are into hiphop and r+b have been buying his
records as well as all the techno and house heads who have known
about him for a little while now.

It's really interesting to compare that to how the Amp Fiddler album is
being pushed in the UK. Not sure if I've mentioned, but 'Waltz of a Ghetto
Fly' got 4 of 5 stars in the Metro, which is a sort of middle-of-the-road
free paper primarilly for the tube in London. It's generally regarded as
sh*t. Anyway... they've also had large ads for the album in it and at
Stockwell station there's a full-size (five foot tall or so) ad for the
album which I pass every day on the way to and from work. The only thing
I've seen remotely as adventurous as this is an ad for The Rapture's album
(which happened to occupy exactly the same spot). Meanwhile, you see Ghostly
spending (what seems to me to be) quite a bit of money on promotion
stateside (and here but to a comparitively lesser degree), and it's paid off
in terms of journalistic attention, DJ interest and presumably sales judging
by the growth of the label. It'll be interesting to see whether or not Amp
Fiddler blows up here. He's certainly had some really high profile support
so far.

Obviously it's hard to compare the two that closely, since the Amp Fiddler
stuff will be accessible to a much wider audience, but I'm still interested
to see what happens.

first things

 to consider...

the 45 hours of music is encoded at 48kbs, which is pitiful

 quality. mp3's

at their 'lowest' quality should be 128- so your hours is now

 down to 15.

if 15 hours of music is all you're looking for, than there's

 much smaller-

cheaper- mp3 player out there than either the ipod or the sony.

also- i wonder how the music transfer works? it takes about

 30 minutes to

load 30GB of music onto my ipod via USB2.

things to look into before buying.

Oh yeah, a small irritating thing about this site : they never say whether the
tracks are those from the vinyl EP or the CD version - they used to be quite
different, esp with the early releases. Just bitching.

My view is no one is making you buy it, so don't.

I've no idea what Jeff's running costs are or what he needs to make back to
break even but we went thru this with Peacefrog...

 [Matt Chester [EMAIL PROTECTED]]
At the moment, if I press up 800 copies of a release it costs about
?1200 (less in N.America), and on a standard price to distributors
(which = about ?5.50 in the stores) it takes about 500 sales to break
even. So to double that price and claim it's to cover costs is
ridiculous. Whilst the figures for a small independant label are
tight as hell, I seriously doubt raising the prices will help -
distributors and stores would take an accordingly higher cut, and
sales would probably drop a bit as people find their addictions harder
 and harder to sustain.

But the man isn't trying to just break even. You're forgetting about
packaging, press, etc. costs, overhead for the label (employees and
such) and the fact that Jeff Mills actually wants to make a living off
of this. If he sold them for cost, it wouldn't get him anywhere.

That's one thing that always struck me as odd. I don't know how many
times I've heard people grumble about labels or promoters making money
off of music (not to say you were saying this or that Axis is charging
any sort of a fair price, this is just a tangent)-- I know I even did as
a punk teenager. After throwing shows and releasing records, I think
it's absurd to ask people to put that much of their money at risk and to
devote that much time and effort to something and only be able to barely
break even, otherwise they're a sellout.

RE: (313) warprecords

2004-01-15 Thread Cobert, Gwendal
To me it is a matter of pricing : I don't know how much iTunes charges (how
much is it for an Environ EP BTW ?), but on the Warp site tracks are about two
times more expensive as I would like them to be. Since you don't have the
actual object anymore, it should be normal to have some discount... would it be
only because it also costs a lot less to the label.

i think there will most likely be a market for this when more people
have the ability to dj mp3s (either through ableton liveneeds mp3

then again you might be tapping into a different market. environ think
it's there, you can get their stuff through iTunes Music Service now. be
interesting to watch their sales, if that data is available.

If Warp make a success of it, though, then smaller labels will be able to deal
with Warp themselves, having their tracks sold via Warp's infrastructure
without paying for it all themselves - that'll be the point, I reckon, at which
this whole selling-mp3s deal will come into its own...

They seem to be giving out mixed messages on the encoding side of things - in
their FAQ it says Bleep MP3s are a minimum of 256kbps, while the majority of
MP3s found on the internet are 128kbps. Yet they seem to contradict that in
the technical queries bit. Personally I don't think they should have used VBR,
but will reserve judgement until I've downloaded and listened to a couple of
 tracks from their site...

Yep, I'm going to check a few out - LAME is a pretty poor encoder, there's a
reason it's free! And just say no to VBR...

Us Yanks better take advantage of Warp's 7-quid-per-album MP3 deal now;

just to let you all know if you're interested, theres a warp back catalogue
cd campaign going on in the UK at the minute.
I think all the CD's are 8.99 (maybe a little cheaper)
you can get them at www.piccadillyrecords.com, and also www.boomkat.com, I
guess at warp too.

I don't agree... Wireless was very good IMHO, with All exhale being an
absolutely amazing electroclash (or whatever) single. Alright on top wasn't
absolutely excellent, but I love the singer's voice (used to be the singer with
The Aloof, a perfect example of underrated act...), so I found this album very
enjoyable... Haven't checked the new stuff yet though, and I agree these latest
records find him straying far from his Detroit-inspired sound of the Pacefrog
years...

Does any one here know who put what into Luke Slater's water recently?

I heard his new EP this morning on Novamute and its quite

 possible one of

the most horrible things I've ever heard.

Electroclash gabba and I made sure it was on 33!!

I am Disappointed as the man has created some of the finest
