(313) HIGH TECH SOUL DVD
HIGH TECH SOUL DVD Directed by Gary Bredow, HIGH TECH SOUL is the first film to to tackle the deep roots of techno music and the city that spawned it: Detroit. With Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and many more. Bredow's cast of alumni -- the holy trinity of Atkins, May and Saunderson at the front -- fill out this tale with passion, pride and, oddly for music of the future, nostalgia too. - Dazed Confused HIGH TECH SOUL is the first documentary to tackle the deep roots of techno music alongside the cultural history of Detroit, its birthplace. From the race riots of 1967 to the underground party scene of the late 1980s, Detroit's economic downturn didn't stop the invention of a new kind of music that brought international attention to its producers and their hometown. Featuring in-depth interviews with many of the world's best exponents of the artform, High Tech Soul focuses on the creators of the genre -- Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson -- and looks at the relationships and personal struggles behind the music. Artists like Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Eddie Fowlkes and a host of others explain why techno, with its abrasive tones and resonating basslines, could not have come from anywhere but Detroit. With classic anthems such as Rhythim Is Rhythim's Strings of Life and Inner City's Good Life, High Tech Soul celebrates the pioneers, the promoters and the city that spawned a global phenomenon. Soundtrack Includes: Aux 88, Cybotron, Inner City, Juan Atkins, Mayday, Model 500, Plastikman, Rhythim Is Rhythim, and more! The film features: Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Eddie (Flashin) Fowlkes, Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, John Acquaviva, Carl Cox, Carl Craig, Blake Baxter, Stacey Pullen, Thomas Barnett, Matthew Dear, Anthony Shake Shakir, Keith Tucker, Delano Smith, Mike Archer, Derrick Thompson, Mike Clark, Alan Oldham, Laura Gavoor, Himawari, Scan 7, Kenny Larkin, Stacey Hotwax Hale, Claus Bachor, Electrifying Mojo, Niko Marks, Barbara Deyo, Dan Sordyl, Sam Valenti, Ron Murphy, George Baker, and Kwame Kilpatrick. http://www.hightechsoul.com also look out for Submerge: Live In Japan DVD

(313) Re: Blue Potential
I purchased Blue Potential CD/DVD a couple of weeks ago, I also recently picked up the UR/galaxy 2 galaxy compilation. both the jeff mills project and the UR comp have restored my faith that there is still good techno being made. (Even though a lot of the tracks on the UR comp go back to the early 90's! it is still better than most of the rubbish passing itself of as techno these days). i know its preaching to the converted here on 313 but if you haven't seen the dvd or heard the cd check it out. looking forward to jeff's next dvd project. It would be cool if the UR guys could release a live dvd of Galaxy 2 galaxy project. dave

(313) Re: Kraftwerk
frankly, i'd be a lot more excited to go see them if there was even the slightest chance of them playing something besides the obvious hits. why not play europe endless or antenna? I saw them a couple of times when they played Australia (2002). And have seen some of their european shows (via dvd), and every-time they played 'Expo 2000' It was always the UR remix version (detroit..electric..). (313) via FREEP. Detroit, videogame and submerge!
http://www.freep.com/entertainment/videogames/club24e_20050224.htm Rockstar Games, maker of the blockbuster Grand Theft Auto series of video games, is about to put Detroit on the map -- the game map, that is. Detroit is one of just three locations to be featured in its upcoming Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition, the latest game in the incredibly popular street-racing series that is all about cool cars and even cooler places to be. This is the first time that Detroit will be featured so prominently in an A-list video game. And it's not just the city's streets in a starring role: About 20 songs by artists from Detroit's revered underground electronic music scene are used in the game's soundtrack. Since 'Midnight Club 3' captures the current scene in America, we decided to have the game take place in the three cities most important to American street racing: San Diego, Atlanta and Detroit, said Jay Panek, game producer for Rockstar San Diego. Detroit is the birthplace of the automobile and where this country's love for cars originates. Of all the cities, Detroit has the best appreciation for muscle cars, like the '69 Charger, a personal favorite. It's unusual for games to feature cities like Detroit in such realistic detail. Most driving games focus on coastal cities, such as Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, New York or San Francisco, or feature swanky overseas locations. And though the Midnight Club series focuses on a typically illegal activity -- street racing -- it's been largely controversy-free, thanks mostly to the fact that it doesn't feature the kind of antiestablishment violence (smooshing pedestrians, battling police officers) that has gotten Rockstar Games like Grand Theft Auto into trouble. The Midnight Club series has been a consistent best seller, thanks both to the production quality of the game -- it looks and drives so smoothly you really feel like you're hurtling down city streets at 100 m.p.h. -- and the attention to detail in its cityscapes. Rockstar reps spent some quality time in Detroit getting the look and feel of the city and even consulted with top members of Submerge, a Detroit-based company that is known worldwide for producing and distributing electronic music. That said, don't expect a slavish reproduction of the Motor City. We don't re-create exact city layouts, Panek said. They're architectural caricatures of the cities they represent. The basic street layout and key landmarks are there, but the cities have been modeled to maximize the driving experience. For example, in Detroit, you can race through Greektown, but it won't be a street-for-street replica. Unfortunately, real cities don't have the sort of shortcuts and jumps we want to offer gamers. We take the real city and apply imagination to it. For example, we'll make it possible for you to do things like hit a jump and land on an elevated train track, then as you continue to race you might have the train coming up behind you so you have to quickly find a stairwell to drive down. Detroit's techno music scene is what initially attracted Rockstar Games to the city. The gaming company originally wanted Underground Resistance -- a local collective that has been making electronic music for nearly 20 years -- to be featured on the soundtrack of another game, State of Emergency. Rockstar games approached Mike Banks (also known as Mad Mike), who founded Submerge and is a member of Underground Resistance, commonly called UR. Submerge does just about everything: recording, management, distribution, licensing and publishing. The founder of Rockstar Games ... came here when Mike Banks was working on construction of the Submerge building. And basically, Mike Banks is not really down for commercial exploitation of his music whatsoever. So he gave him the big Mad Mike UR speech and kicked him out, said Ade Henderson-Mainor, president of Submerge Recordings. But J.D. Simpson, our general counsel for Submerge, kept the relationship alive for years. When I came on board in 2002, we were able to rekindle that relationship. So we said we will do this deal if we have Detroit in the game, said Henderson-Mainor, who also will be a key player in this year's Memorial Day weekend electronic music festival, which was announced Wednesday. And they said OK, only if you let us use the music. Among electronic music aficionados, UR is known for its spare and hard-driving beats and strong anticommercial stance. This is the sound of secretive dance parties, not mainstream radio music. And it's not the kind of stuff usually featured in video games. It's more mainstream, club and television dance music, Henderson-Mainor said of typical video game fare. It's not underground dance music. It's not like the stuff that we make. So they get cool points having us being a part of this game. All of the music was preexisting, not created for the game, with Submerge handling the

(313) Kraftwerk - Sydney short Review
a good review of the paris show describes preety much the sydney show (http://kraftwerk.technopop.com.br/life_reviews.php) . It was great to see the tracks and the guys (even though they barely acknowledged the crowd - no suprises there ;-) The enmore theatre was packed. It was very cool to hear EXPO 2000 - with the detroit is..so electric - germany is..so electric.. samples. It would be cool to see at the melbourne show some breaking/bboy action to the numbers/tour de france tracks!. it wasn't clear from whre i was sitting how much of the show was actually live..from what i could see Ralf (?) was using the microphone ocasionaly..but sound was coming out even when he wasn't talking into the microphone. now if only we can get a UR/Kraftwerk australian tour happening... any adelaide people heading over to the melbourne show next wednesday? cheers, dave
[313] Detroit Innovators...Montreux Jazz Festival
Has anybody been at the Montreux Jazz Festival this year??? how is this for a line-up last Thursday night Marianne Faithful and Band, Angie Stone (nice interpolation/sampling of the o'jays back stabbers' on her track 'I wish I didn't miss you' nice song!!) then...Detroit Innovators feat. Carl Craig, Leon Ware, Sandra St Victor and the Dox Orchestra Detroit Innovators is an adventurous mixture of Dance, Electronic, Soul and Funk music. more info @ http://www.montreuxjazz.com/e/Programme/Les+artistes+-+Recherche/bio_artists _e.htm This combination unites Carl Craig, innovative artist of the international Dance music scene, Leon Ware a true legend of Soul music, Wah Wah Watson a prodigious and unique guitarist and Sandra St Victor a talented diva of Nu-Soul. Their individual collaborations of the past and present go from Marvin Gaye to Herbie Hancock to the Roots and Angélique Kidjo. In company of the Dox Orchestra, these personalities put themselves to reconsider Soul music in the light of their influence and their innovation. The Detroit Innovators allow` their members to get to a higher level while confronting their different experiences. -- I haven't heard much of Leon ware (songwriter to Marvin gaye..et al) , I have his album from 1982 (with the nice track 'Why I came to California') recently reissued, and Sandra St victor was in the Roy Ayres ubiquity I think, and the family stand (sweet liberation).. forgive my ignorance who is the dax orchestra?? I thought Carl Craig's collaboration with herbie Hancock was pretty cool. I wonder if these 'Detroit Innovators' will release anything.. I Hope so. anybody heard anything about these collaborations?? cheers, Dave - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[313] Re:[313] Theremin/Electronic Odyssey
Features comments by musicians Todd Rundgren, Brian Wilson, and Clara Rockmore, plus inventor Robert Moog, and Theremin himself. Has anyone else seen this? Not me... but : I have recently listened to some of the Ohm - Electronic Pioneers 3-CD comp. And I loved the Clara Rockmore piece ; anyone know enough about her to recommend one or two records from her I highly recommend anybody that is interested in the theremin to check out some of the items at this site (http://theremin.info/theremin-store.shtml) the clara rockmore CD entitled The Art of the Theremin - Clara Rockmore particularly good is the track Saint-Saens - The Swan sounds nothing like techno but you have to admire the ability to make such a fantastic sound out of electronics in those days.I think that is the only CD of hers available (it was produced by Bob Moog i think) the book 'Theremin : Ether Music and Espionage' is very detailed and is worth a read also. the best thing about the theremin story I think, is all the people he met and the devices he created and his life story..not so much the sound of the instrument which can be annoying at times..small doses it's ok! (i.e on at least one metro area 12 i can think of) cheers, Dave - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I was watching an advertisement the other day on TV (Australian) i think during the panel or rove, It was for the SONY Walkman/Minidisc. Firstly I was suprised that they were promoting this format. Secondly the Ad was made to look like your music could be made to order 'fast-food style' with some people at a drive through window picking up the package. I just had a squiz through the latest The Face magazine (the one with David Beckham of Manchester United fame on the cover). There's also an article on Adelaide, Australia-based lable Dirty House Records. They describe their sound as Derrick Carter and Jeff Mills getting into a fight and then deciding to just get along (or something along those lines). Any thoughts? I was waiting for somebody to notice that!. I particulary like the 'yob chic' look happening in one of the photos down at the beach. DJ HMC has a Farmers Union Iced Coffee drink in his hands!. There is a combined Dirty House/Juice Records 12 coming out very soon which i think the article mentions. record label websites
Why is it that some of the most forward thinking artists and record labels around today have some of the worst websites for information (out of date info, pages and pages of flash intros.) Two big exceptions (that i can think of) to this are the AXIS RECORDS and PURESONIK websites, With lots of weblogs appearing these days i would like to see labels supplying more up-to-date info, what do you think?. Release dates of records, where to obtain online, artist bios, sound files, news that is current, email mailing lists etc. I am interested in what makes a good record label website?, what things do you like to see, etc? Also in another web/313 related thread.. It sounds like their will be more techno tourists from around the world visiting Detroit this year for the 2nd DEMF, it would be good to have a permanent website that is full of information (aimed at people who are into Detroit techno) on where to stay, where to visit, shop etc - maybe one already exists?. OT - Frankie Knuckles JJJ Mixup
Hello, Did anybody in Australia record Frankie Knuckles set on JJJ's Mixup last Saturday night. I saw him on Friday night at the Prince Of Wales in Melbourne and it was a good show. I just wish i was back home in adelaide and recorded this off the radio! - some of his sets at the deephousepage are well worth a listen. Cheers, Dave
Re: Tribute EP
just a quick question about Terrence Parker's Tribute ep on Intangible... the first track - i think it's Love's Got Me High - is almost exactly the same as a track on DJ Assault's Straight Up..., except that the track on Assault's mix is missing the vocal snippets, is substantially faster (we're talking 45rpm compared to 33), and is listed as Taxicab on the backcover of the cd. does anyone know what the deal is here? which is the original? what's the sample? anyone got a spare of the 2 Brothers...? I Have been listening to those 4 tracks non stop this week (along with François Kervorkian Essential mix 2X CD - Very cool BTW.) i am pretty sure that track 1 uses a wood, brass, and steel sample of funkanova (these guys were the sugarhill band if my memory serves me correctly) - The EP is great. can anyone - maybe TP himself share some more info about this EP. It may of already been covered a while back on 313 - i checked TP's site out this week and the EP was listed 10? or more releases back. has this been reissued or is it a new EP? - i only know what i have read about Ken Collier from some of the kind words written about him after he died, i have his 'out come the freaks' track that he did with don was, a deserving tribute no doubt. on another subject has anybody read 'i was a robot' by Wolfgang Flur? (other than fellow 313'er Tim Barr of course!) - interesting stories about his days with Kraftwerk (and certainly more detailed than any Kraftwerk bio i have ever read. IMHO) Dave
Re: OT: Disco (not Disco) sampler
I was wondering if the disco (not disco) sampler (compiled by Joey Negro) is any good. I picked that record up a couple of weeks ago, it is a good collection of tracks but a better compilation of tracks IMHO, would be 'last night a dj saved my life' a 2 x LP release to accompany the (reissue of the) book of the same name. For anybody that is interested the LP includes the full 11 minute Danny Krevit remix of 'MFSB - Love is the message' (first legal release? - and the best mix) it includes a nice 2 minute track by DJ Premier Of Gangstarr 'Red Alert Chant', some old school hip hop, disco, classical music, a bit of everything it is out on nuphonic records i heard it the other day. RE:Detroittechno.com
I am preety sure the domain was a mirror for to the demf.org site as well. ..Needless to say everybody was excited as this domain name could attract ALOT of attention. He had just about every good web designer in the Detroit area offering to design the page. He had at least a dozen qualified offers and submissions thrown his way. I would love to see some sites that use the very talented designs of Abdul Haqq. I have been patiently waiting to see some of Haqq's work online (the brief interview with him and Derrick May in 'universal techno' even shows them talking about putting his work online. I know he has a web page but like most web sites these days they often don't get updated. Usally due to a 'lack of content' (hell, i am guilty of this myself). I tried to let him know that it IS just a web page, and that web pages don't bring about enlightenment and we should go ahead and design something. The thing is it could be much more, here are some suggestions for what i would like to see on a detroittechno.org/com/net site. - a 313 FAQ! - a guide to all Detroit releases with a voting system and notes that can be submitted by anyone that is a subscriber. - a guide to where to stay in Detroit, how to get to Detroit! - a guide to all artists and DJ's - a guide to all radio stations - esp a guide to any Detroit techno 'people' that have an online presence. - interviews and background info that we can point people to read about Detroit producers. - sound files in real audio. - a detailed rundown of famous Detroit clubs (Music Institute, Shelter..) - as David said It could have been an excellent vehicle for the current generation of new Detroit producers. - web forums to discuss all these areas. - information on how to book these artists and DJ's - info on those DJ's and producers that are no longer living in Detroit but are regarded as from Detroit. - information about Detroit filmakers, animators, writers etc, designers. - info on the people that have inspired the music/culture of Detroit techno. It could have been a medium to tell the world (SHOW the world) what's really going down in Detroit. that is sad. I hope someone gets motivated and sets up a site like the ideas i have suggested above. For far too long what we hear about Detroit techno is filtered from old PR and old magazine interviews..some reviews these days still refer to the liner notes of records that were released 10+ years ago... time for some WWW action! Dave
Re: [313] Ford Focus Ad
Yes, can i can't wait to see the video of the ad, surely ford could make a downloadable version. It is a shame that Juan does not have a website. OK, this may sound a bit weird but, one of my favourite 'non 313' techno tracks would have to be 'Fokuz' by 2000One on (steffan robbers) eevolute records, i just had a look at the Ford Focus banner ad at the FOX site and i saw the words 'focus 2001 which reminded me of that track. http://www.eevolute.com/eevo003.html anybody else remember that track, it came out in 1992 (and i finally managed to track down a copy a couple of years ago)? Dave
Re: Mixing speeches and music
I just wanted to know who started the tradition of mixing speeches with music, in particular, the Martin Luther King speeches.. I came across a reference to a Label in NYC, Paul Winley Records - label that released: Africa Bambaata's death mix live, super disco brakes 1-6 and 'Sweet T' Winley, Paulette Winley, Ann Winley, harlem underground band (George Benson), Zulu nation throwdown etc..which you can still find for sale online. This label released music and speeches of allegedly bootleg nature (i.e no payments to artists). Apparently Bambaata and fellow DJ's of the time used to mix MLK speeches over the music they was playing..so this go's back to the 70's at least and it's fair to say that the Chicago and Detroit DJ's (certainly Frankie knuckles) would of seen these sorts of DJ's at that time. Last week i came across a reference to Paul Winley store in New York (the same rundown shop as featured in David Toop's 'Rap Attack' (published way back in the early 80's - reissued last year as 'rap attack version 3'). Apparently he and his daughter still sell records out the front of the store on the sidewalk! Dave P.S.: i bought that Frankie Knuckles 'Choice' collection of his favourite tracks, including my fave - Nick Straker Band's 'just a little bit of jazz', who was the DJ at the DEMF that was using two copies of this record at the beginning of his set?? - that sounded cool!.
DEMF Website?
i think it is fair to post the address of your mp3's in your sig file instead of straight up ads, the signal to noise ratio (pun intended) these days is mostly off topic re-reposts/ads/etc.. who is responsible for the DMEF web site?, i would like to know detailed information about who was at this years event, plenty of photos of the 'large' crowd that attended (links to the audio and video files at groovetech of course) and i know it is very early to say - who might be at next year's event, information on getting to and around Detroit, where to stay, what to see, what record shops to visit, where to guest dj (i know some Adelaide (South Australia) people are interested in going to it next year). It seems to me that a permanent DEMF site would be a great place for people to learn about 313, artists, labels etc, history and future. Dave B

PS: Any melbourne reports of DJ rolando's melbourne shows? Apologies for the late reply. Re: Rolando and The Cage This is the first I have heard of this - I know the promoter well and I don't think that was ever considered, maybe someone else suggested it. I will find out. If so it was so secret that no one knew about it which probably defeated the purpose!! i am sure i read it on beat magazine's website in the gig guide a day or so before, ( don't believe everything you read, i guess!) I have yet to read a report of the show (especially interested in Loomit's involvement. Re: Rolando Kraftwerk Remix I wasn't going to mention this but I am surprised to see UR approach the rock magazine NME (whereas Jockey Slut has credibility). NME - despite its left-wing image - reads as a 'passively racist' magazine (as a friend put it) that is just jumping on the 'dance' bandwagon, as it has done the 'urban' bandwagon. If NME were offered an Aphex Twin or Rolando cover, it would go to the former. But I guess UR need to get the word out in the circumstances. er, thanks.. Is there any information other than 'that' article about a rolando remix of expo2000. Dave
UR RIPOFF - link to audio file
A mp3 file of the storm track that rips of UR's sonic destroyer track is availabile at JUNO RECORDS (uk) website http://www.juno.co.uk a search for 'storm' will locate the (crap trance ripoff) file. I can't believe that people think they can just get away with sampling and covering tracks released by UR. It seems that there are people still haven't got the message. It's looking like we are off to battle again!!! Dave Barnett PS: Any melbourne reports of DJ rolando's melbourne shows?, i was in sydney and melbourne a couple of weeks ago and nearly every main street pavement was sprayed with the UR logo, in sydney a (out of action?) car was covered with ur posters. also re: The melbourne show(s?), i heard there might of been another show at 'the cage'. did that happen? I am also interested in knowing more about the DJ Rolando remixes of the Kraftwerk track mentioned in the NME article.
DEMF + SHAKE
After having read all the stories about the DEMF, and listening to the realaudio at groovetech for the last couple of days, I've decided to definately make the trip from Utrecht to Detroit next year! I think there may be some people from Australia come over for the next one. It would be good to get some Aussies over there. I've just taped Theo Parrish's set and Shake's set, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what track Shake is playing at exactly one hour into his set? And (I'm almost too emberassed to ask, because I probably should know what track it is?!) the third track he played after that. (times up(?) for Detroit...our lovely city). Oh, and I'm kind of curious about the first two tracks he played (especially the second one). Jurren The second track of shake's set (the disco'y one?) is 'a little bit of jazz' by Nick Straker Band (PRELUDE) which he has 2 copies of. dave
Hypnotic Tango The (Detroit New) Music Institute.
69 - Rushed Thunderground - Amerenth Max404 -? (djax) All sound like they were sampling hypnotic tango, not sure who the artist is. But i have a record of 80's tracks called 'dance rap' or something similar and it as that track on it, maybe it is a preset synth patch or something. I think this question might of been answered a while ago - check the 313 archives. Dave PS: A Website about the 'The Music Institute' would be cool. I have seen some good sites about the paradise garage (photo's, lists of tracks played their and peoples stories).
Detroit EMF
I would like to know if the Detroit EMF will be documented on video in any way?, as well as the websites. Dave
Jeff Mills / The Shock of the New
I was watching the final episode This Is Modern Art: The Shock Of The Now (Oxford TV/Channel 4) last week on ABC TV (the Australian ABC not the US one). And i the last final minutes of the show when they were talking about the future of modern art + Jeff MIll's 'i9' - was playing! very appropriate i thought.. anybody else have any anecdotes involving 313 tracks on tv programs/movies i remember a discussion a while back (like 2 tyeas ago) about this sort of thing. Dave
