GO!!!

featuring

PLACID
(acid-house.net / under_score)

Placid first came on my radar around 8 years ago, I think. He would post
his mixes to the [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list, and as a huge fan of classic
Detroit sounds, as well as acid house from any region, I naturally fell in
love with his style. With every mix he posted, I saw more diversity among
the styles he would include on his mixes. Wether it was Acid House, Italo
Disco, or Minimal techno, he played the best of any genre he dared to
play. I could tell that this guy was the real deal. He holds down 2
radio shows, as well as a residency at The Tube in Bristol, where he plays
along side Emptyset mastermind, Paul Purgas. He also has been running his
acid-house.net site for many years, keeping tabs on all things new and old
relating to the wonderful world of the TB-303. I would email him from time
to time to see if he was coming to the states to play, and it never seemed
to work out. When I started my GO!!! parties, I was absolutely sure I was
going to book him. It will be the first time I get to hear him play in
person, as well as formally meet him, so needless to say this night will
be very special to me. Some in my position might be worried that he won't
deliver, but I am not nervous one bit. Guys like Mike Huckaby, Marcel
Dettmann, Shed, Kevin Reynolds I-F sing his praises well enough to keep
me even more excited! So, join me for my 5th installment of my GO!!!
parties, and welcome Placid into your list of favorite DJ's.

GO!!! happens on the 2nd Thursday of every month with resident Derek

It has a similar chord progression, but not the same. Not a bad track
but Aril's in danger of being embraced by the progressive DJs for
stuff like this. Maybe Salsa and Dickweed will pick up on it.

Chymera has a track that originally sampled You Can Go Your Own Way
by Fleetwood Mac. I advised him to drop the sample because the track
didn't need it, but he still drops the sample when he plays it out.

Never underestimate the power of Fleetwood Mac. I saw them live in
1976, and with the exception of a few Christine McVie weepers, it was
a full on dance party.

And if you're into collecting and using sample CDs, the Mick Fleetwood
sample CD is insanely great.

Re: (313) OT: Ryan Burns died

Whoa. This really caught me by suprise. I havent really even thought about
him in quite some time, maybe due to him not being very active (if even
subscribed) to this list anymore. Either way, I met him when I played Iowa
City back in 2000 (??) and he was part of the welcoming commitee. Took
quite good care of me, and had many a discussion with him about Detroit
music in general, and even specificly... Shades of Jae. I thought of that
before I even finished reading Kents post.

I dont know what to say, other than I'm 31 years old, and I'm already sick
of people dying. Seems like these days, I hear of someone who I know, or
respect, or both, every 2 months or so.

Strange we are all just hearing about this now. Kent, if you hear anything
more, please post it or email me.

Peace out, Ryan. You will be missed.

His obit and discussion about him on the Iowa dance music site Ubersonic:
http://www.ubersonic.org/thread/view/id/2454

Ryan was someone who had a lot of personal problems, which don't
really bear discussing here. If you knew him, you know what I'm
talking about, and if you didn't, well, it doesn't matter. The thing
about Ryan, though, is that there was no one I ever met who loved good
techno and house music more -- it was the one abiding passion in his
life. He led a pretty messy, chaotic life but when you talked to him
about music he could become focused and enthusiastic. When he did,
he'd get a little grin and a faraway look in his eyes.

I know next to nothing about his family or personal life, and hadn't
spoken to him for nearly a year. But if you want to pay respect to
him, next time you drop Shades of Jae -- probably his most prized
possesion and top track -- take a moment to nod your head, because if
there is a heaven, Ryan will be nodding right along with you.

Repeated bad behavior and failure to take it off list can get your

decision.

I havent chimed in at all on this subject, due to the fact that Ive just
switched jobs and Im moving tomorrow and the COUNTLESS other things that
have my life upside down, but Ill give me .02 now.

I realize that for alot of you, the fest has morphed into something else
(for better, or for worse). I, for one, don't see this as a bad thing. It
may not be your idea of detroit, but for what is going on in detroit
right now, it's pretty accurate. Paxahau has put together a pretty solid
lineup that covers most of the bases from before. in some areas, it just
scratches the surface, but at the very least, theres alot of great music.
I dont know... I get where you are all coming from with the whole theyve
turned it into a typical rave thing, but lets be honest... look at the
festivals that are put on all around the world. Dont you feel this has
more to offer than, say... timewarp? Or even I Love Techno? I do. Its more
diverse than either of those, and with overall MUCH better music! (I dont
see any Happy Hardcore on there..)

And they did a pretty solid job of getting the next waves of Detroit
producers on there. Theres a couple others I wouldve liked to have seen
added, but I also see plenty that should have played YEARS ago (see: Jared
Wilson, Brian Kage, etc).

Thats all I can say on the subject. Im going... plain and simple. I hope
alot of you do the same, but I can see why not. I re-listed the lineup,
listing what all I am excited about, and to me... thats a good time!

I hope to see you there!

Sorry, just can't say I see the same thing. When they've given time slots
to the Progressive House/Trance DJs of Picturethisdetroit.com something has
gone seriously askew. I don't care if they are local DJs and that's what
is going on in Detroit. That music is soulless and it's sh!t. Even if the
DJs are from Detroit the music isn't and has been ripped so far from it's
techno roots that it's practically anti-techno. You can find pro/trance at
any other festival around the world and it's absence from the DEMF was what
made the weekend so great. DEMF was a hi-tech soul music festival. As much
as I like a number of the additions (mainly the house artists - Blaze,
Louie Vega, etc.) I think the introduction of the Prog/Trance thing is
bogus and it paves the way for more of that nonsense in the future. I
liked the fact that you had to go to an afterparty to hear any prog/trance
- don't give that crap an official platform!

I realize that for alot of you, the fest has morphed into something else
(for better, or for worse).

Well, it's worse - should I be excited about that?

I sent this the other day, but I dont think it ever went through. If it did and

think that was the problem.

---

I have a Frankie Bones story. It was like 1997 or 1998. I was working at Record
Time then. He played a rave in Detroit
and I went and it was like every 3rd record was the bomb, and the other 2
were not my thing. He came into RT the next
day, and I asked him about some conga loop record he had played. He told me
what it was, but after he left I had
forgotten about it. A year or 2 later, I was booked to open for him at Motor.
So, I emailed Sonic Groove and ordered some
records a couple days before hoping he could bring the records to the gig for
me. When he showed up, he looked at me, and
said cool. I thought that was you. He handed me the records I ordered, and
another one. It was a bootleg that said
Happy song and dance, which I was told was an edit someone did years ago of
an old Rare Earth tune..? Anyhow, I asked
what it was, and he said it's that conga loop record you asked about in the
dance room a few years back. That ones on

the house.

Ive never been so excited by his DJing. And as a producer, Ive never heard him
do anything that wasnt complete recyled or
even just samples of hit techno records (DBX, Hawtin, Advent, etc.) with him
adding... well, nothing. Ive never really
liked much of the NuGroove stuff that Ive heard, anyways, so I cant speak for
that. Aside from Dangerous on the
Dancefloor, I havent liked any of his productions, or if I would even call
them productions.

But I thought him bringing that record for me, some kid who he only THOUGHT he
had met a couple years beforehand, and
then not even charging me for it... I thought that was pretty darn cool,
and Ive never had a bad thing to say about
him since. Not to mention, since then, before I moved to NYC he even came out
to see me a couple times when I played.

And he even danced!

He might be a loudmoth and extremely opinionated, but he's got ALOT of heart
and hes pure class in my book.

My $.02

The music he's released since his heyday in the 80s isn't on par with that
 stuff,
and again, it's dance tracks: for mixing, mostly: not 'home listening'.
 The point
here isn't about what he's done lately, but what he has done versus what
 some
here claimed he'd not done. It's easy to say, Frankie shoots his mouth off
and fills his own balloon, because he has/does, but he has also done tons
more for electronic dance music culture than those on this list that are
 shooting off
their mouths slagging him, combined x1000.

i suppose its possible (i havent heard that set), though im pretty
sure its got bits of amp fiddler vocals in it and i dont think he
was doing stuff with kenny that long ago. its actually more like
track 4 in that its kinda tracky and repetitive but teases you
with unexpected edits and cutups. then near the end it comes into
a more stripped down bit with kenny talking on it. good stuff, but
hardly essential.

Like, I know I have a green Drexciya record. And a blue one. And a
couple others, they are in that one crate, hopefully, right next to the
stack of books. A little to the left... I'm sort of the opposite of a

That's okay. At times my CD collection has been sorted chromatically by

2005-03-15 Thread Derek Plaslaiko.

how *I* remember it, NO u.s. distributors were carrying them. not watts.
not syntax. not nemesis. none of them.

we (record time, late 90's) always got our sales copies via hardwax. and i
was always told that was the ONLY way to get them, because thats how

hardwax wanted it.

and as far as i know, theyve been out of print for quite some time.

if they arent out of print, spend some money at hardwax. theyre a great
store and more than deserving of your support. even if i
costs you a few extra bucks. the records in question (MMM 1 2,
errorsmith 1 2, soundstream, smith hack LP, etc) are worth 3 times
what youre going to get charged anyhow.

they used to be distributed in the states. i bought all my sound hack
records at temple records in new york. i'm thought they would

have come

through watts. but i guess it could have been from prime in the uk.

i know they used to be, i just dont think anyone is stocking them
now. which seems so wrong on so many levels. i dont remember the
prime stickers being on any of my friends' copies. maybe it was
nemesis? though that doesnt exactly make sense either.
