I can see the theory behind it, it just a shame people don't want to exp. the real thing in a store, can't really see the service being a port of call for many people here but then again who knows, I never thought people would listen to tunes on their phone but anyone who's travelled on public transport will know different. I would love to experience the real thing every saturday but not everybody lives in London/Amsterdam/Berlin/namethatcity. I live in a smallish (130k inhabitats) city in north Finland where there are two record shops. The other is an old and dominant shop selling list music, popular music, heavy metal and other common things here in Finland and everything is on CD. The other is a bit alternative store. The alternative part leans heavily to heavy metal which is really popular here in Finland. There is a small vinyl section which has apprx. couple of hundred records and the rotation is really weak. I'd like to support my local dealer but I have given up since it really cannot compare to Piccadilly, Hardwax and other stores in the net selling electronic music. I myself have found salvation with the kind of lists that Piccadilly puts out and I see this kind of service benefitting us who don't have access to quality stores who are specialists. Since we're talking about soundclips, could someone tell me how to use Juno soundclips so that winamp would show what track was playing? (313) Recording your records?
Hello everybody. About backing up your record collection. I'm sure that on this list there is more than enough knowledge about sound processing and recording so here we go: 1. RIAA - Does just plain old mixer do the trick or should I purchase a specific RIAA amplifier (are they called that? ed.)? 2. Technics SL-1200MKII or a Hi-Fi turntable? Rega? Dual? 3. Needle + Cartridge? Ortofon? 4. Soundcard? I currently have a M-Audio Audiophile Delta 24/94 which I bought based on recommendation. 5. Software side and processing. What should I do after I've recorded a record to my computer. Currently I'm just normalizing every song after I've cutpasted it. What else should I do or should I skip normalizing altogether? My current setup: Sl-1200, old crappy omnitronic mixer (I'm sure I would get better sounding result if I replace this (RIAA amplifier??), audiophile soundcard and normal home computer. RE: (313) iPod DJ
Regarding performind dj vs. just-ol-record-spinning-dj. I played a set at my home club after a long break and I had the best time behind the turntables. Dunno whether it was the break or what, but hearing the crowd cheering when playing a good BOOM BOOM BOOM ubercoolische just made me smile whilst browsing my records. That's the connection. Audience giving me feedback whether I should keep this track for another 32/64 on or whether to change the atmosphere all together. I don't concider me being a performing dj, just a lucky guy who gets a chance to play his favourite tunes at a club now and then and liking the fact that there are small amount of people liking the same kind of music. Sharing the music? To sum up, there must be a connection between the audience and the dj, but whether the connection is being made by dj punching through the air or just casually smiling or what ever, it doesn't really matter (at least to me). I like to see now and then dj smiling, because then I know he is having a good time and that can only mean positive vibes towards the dancefloor. Ok, pretty useless rant, everybody knows these things now that I proof read my post :) -- Jari Tolkkinen | dj ken-guru | http://www.ken-guru.net --

Seems like this is some kind of common way for dj's of telling where the records are and how they sound. I have tons of records that I know by their looks. My mental process goes something like: Hmm, there is this track on the record which has white and yellow sleeve and the record has red labels. It's on the picture side track two. It would go perfectly with this track.. Also a friend of mine (dj) said that usually that's a sign of one smoking too much... -- Jari Tolkkinen | dj ken-guru | http://www.ken-guru.net --

Re: (313) Paris?
Hi all, I'm back from Paris. You guys have been busy here, almost 400 new messages in one week! Went to few places which were recommended and I have to praise 12 inch records (in Rue De Turbigo) for their good selection and for their help. Here's the list that managed to creep in my bag while I was in paris (also few records from piccadilly): Recloose - dust - Love this record. Fat Freddys Drop - Flasback / Midnight marauders live - I think the original midnight marauders is one of the best tunes I know and I just had to get this. If it is even possible, this live version might be even better than the original. HIT! Candi Staton - Pepe bradock mixes - Finally managed to get this. Innerzone Orchestra - Bug in the bassbin - Another record that I've tried to hunt down for ages. I'm so happy :-) Matthew Johnson - followed by angels (iiwii 10) - Whoo, new stuff from iiwii. Only quirk for me on this ep is the sample/sound that is also used in the deconstruction ep. Anyway, very good and epic deep techno/techhouse. Ben Watt feat. Estelle and baby blak - outspoken part 1 (buzzingfly 10) - Totally unknown label to me but very good quality house! If anybody cares, it must be a good house tune (atleast for me) if I'll buy house nowadays. It seems like ages since I bought proper vocal house. I like this one. Alessandroni, Paul Honesty : Tridem Remixed Vol.2 - Good remix-ep. Broken beat, house and such... Syclops - Mom, The Video Broke - New stuff from maurice fulton. Other side nice downtempo electronic groover and on the other side very good wacky electroish track. I think the description in piccadilly was a bit more accurate. Anyway, listen to this record too :) NYC2 - NYC2 - Black label, no infos. VERY good deep techno/ tech-house. It's in Juno atleast. Highly recommended. If anybody knows more information on this, I would love to hear... -- Jari Tolkkinen | dj ken-guru | http://www.ken-guru.net --

Re: (313) aparat mp3 (fwd)
Thanks for this link. While we are still discussing (are we) in terms of somebody-meets-somebody, this sounds a bit like the earlies meets dribs. I've been caning lately all the earlies stuff that I could find as well as all the Skam (well mostly bola) stuff I could find. Lucky me, Skam has a very good webshop and the good people in piccadilly have been most kind when it comes to the earlies :) Friend of mine introduced me to Bola in year 2004 and I've been trying to find something like that ever since. Dribs' Open Log book is somewhat in that vein and I liked it _very_ much. Can somebody point me to some producers/labels that sound something like aparat/dribs/bola? Re: (313) Italian dj fined over one million
On the topic of who gets the money. Do you guys think it's morally wrong to download a song that is somehow impossible to get? We all know many cases where the record has been long deleted and it is only possible to get from ebay/gemm/where ever. Example: Let's assume I whip up 40-50e for a record (current asking for DBX - Losing control remixes for example), how does that benefit the artist? It only benefits the guy who managed to buy a copy at the time it was available. I say we need either more re-presses and/or good mp3 stores. I think we are seeing the both happening now. I love those planet-e/metroplex/transmat represses, I'm buying them like hot cakes. I also love bleep where I can buy long lost tracks by Drexciya and others. This then brings us to the issue of everybody can be a dj. I think we all have those limited edition and white label gems which we guard like hawks. I confess that I'm a little pissed if a dj plays the tune from cd-r that I've been hunting down for ages. But you know what, this is the modern days and I think it's good that anybody can be a dj. And by anybody can be a dj, I mean anybody can go to bleep and buy the drexciya's journey home (like I did a while ago :)) and play that funky music. I think the vast selection of records just emphasizes the selection skills and technique of the dj. It also emphasizes the fact that a good dj has to have some kind of knowledge about the history of dance music. There is millions and millions good tunes made today and in the future there will be even more. But to weed out the good tunes from the sea of electronic music, you have to know who are the good producers that you like, which labels puts out funky tunes etc etc. In one sentence: Dedication to music in whole. Hi. I bought a IAudio M3 (40gig version). It boasts with the playing time and seems like a really nice piece of work. The only screen is in the remote control. I haven't recorded any sets yet but I'm planning on recording couple of sets in the future so stay tuned. Aardvarck - Cult copy part 2 - Wish I could get the first part since this rocks. The original mix is nice but mr. Craig hits the bullseye with his remix. Beatfanatic - Adventures in the world of no-fi beats - Not strictly 313 stuff but latin beats from Sweden. Due to sample clearing problems limited press, so get yours while you can. I recommend this highly. Château Flight - Les antipodes (remixes) - The Joakim remix is s good. I correct my mixes when the both channels are playing on top of eachother with the pitch fader. That felt really odd at first since the deck was wobbling back and forth. This was due to the fact that the decks were quite new and the pitches were very tight. How ever the needle didn't jump once during my 2,5h. Hmm, that was actually just one point :D Any hoo, I ordered couple of those from a friend of mine. I like to play without the 'floats but there are couple of places where they are more than welcome. -- Jari Tolkkinen | dj ken-guru | http://www.ken-guru.net --
Re: (313) you listen to techno?

Similar situation but different side of this planet (Oulu, Finland) :) Cubicle job but we have to listen to the music with earphones. And that's fine by me since I'm the only one here listening to electronic music :) I get fair share of odd looks now and then when I recommend new tunes etc :) -- Jari Tolkkinen | dj ken-guru | http://www.ken-guru.net --

Jii Hoo - Let me Luv U (ok so its not new but a great one :) Agreed. Love how Jori Hulkonnen uses the Willie Hutch sample in that. Grrr, as a fellow Finn, I _must_ correct the spelling of his name: it's Jori Hulkkonen :) Yes, I love Let me luv u. The good doctor Bob Jones has also made a great remix of it! -- Jari Tolkkinen | dj ken-guru | http://www.ken-guru.net --
(313) Throbbin gristle remixes
Hi. Haven't seen this discussed here before so here goes. I love the remix album titled Mutant throbbing gristle. Throbbing gristle remixed by Carl Craig, Simon Ratcliffe (basement jaxx), two lone swordmen among others. Two lone swordmen deliver a nice straight techno remixes of United (instrumental vocal while C. Craig works on his magic on Hot on the heels of love. Pretty usual (if you can say that) C. Craig mix in my opinion. The track that really stands out (for me atleast) is the Simon's remix of Hot on the heels of love. Boom, what an ace job he has done with the original! 10/10 for this remix :) Cheers, -- Jari Tolkkinen | dj ken-guru | http://www.ken-guru.net --

Hello. Could somebody identify tune that Tom Churchill was playing in the TraxxUnit-mix around 60:20? The mix can be found from here: http://www.traxxevents.com/music/index.html - Tom Churchill/Jamie Thompson. I read from the local newspaper that this years Loveparade will be cancelled. Does anybody here on the list have more information about this? Any other festivals besides LP and Sonar that are taking place in Europe this summer? Cheers, -- Jari Tolkkinen | dj ken-guru | http://www.ken-guru.net --
