engineer though and the clips sound great to me.

One thing that might be interesting is that remastering everything in one
session from the original tapes might give the tracks a more consistent
sound. I don't know for sure but I'd imagine that because a lot of them
 were
released on different labels, most of these 12"s were mastered by different
engineers at different cutting sessions and that as a result all the
 records
sound a bit different, well at least to my ears, they do.

07 UNKNOWN JOURNEY is definitely something I've never heard before or seen
 on any original releases.

i use a lot of drexciyan tracks in my tv show called the Source Data show on

i mix vinyl, then grab some footage off the inter-web, them mix that live over
the audio.

i've used tracks off the quest, maybe a few others, steralization from DE and
an arpanet track. only made three shows as they are labor intensive but more

anything and everything the released on UR and shockwave / submerge as
drexciya..

davy jones locker is the most haunting creeping electro track ive ever heard

so much output by these two its just amazing.

Good lookin out klaas. Give the man a cookie! On topic and on point.

this ep sounds like the mills I've been waiting for. Im not gifted at
describing music, but I love the more sophisticated sounds of the
latest purpose maker as compared to *some* of jeffs recent offerings.
percussion abound and the warm, lush synth tones. go to the axis site
and follow your ears. I wish i could get some dibs on it.

Tip to list, for more great techno check out DJ BONEs new mix CD.
Seriously inspired. The track listing is overflowing with ripe talent.

Jeff Mills offers his first exclusive 12" Ep for the Axis Shop. Taken
from the archive of unreleased Purpose Maker tracks, he punctuates his
influence in the world of Electronic Music with this 3 track 12" Ep
entitled "Time Mechanic" (ax-043). Easily accessible for any type of

more emotion. Funky basslines, precise arrangements and sexy
percussion all equal to " Millsian Minimalism" that is hard to find
today. A must-have for any Purpose Maker/Axis collector. For more

I think its all Ultra Sales Pitch.

I listened to the samples on nuloop. Same "common" tracks as far as I
can tell, and the mastering is the same as it was in the early 80's.
Type in Kraftwerk in Gemm, hit show all releases on vinyl, and wait 5
minutes for your computer to load all the sellers that can hook you up
with the vinyl.

I can think of a Kit Clayton live set that was totally glich. It was an

Alright, my favorite 10 artist for 2004 : (in no particular order)

1) Lucien-n-Luciano : Man, has this guy made a lot of great stuff this
year. I cant keep track of it all. Blind Behaviour is an incredible
album.
2) DJ Bone : All of his new subject detroit records are top shelf. Each
record of the series impresses me equally. He's back
3) Keith Tucker: The new Fuzion: Detroit to Rome ep is a masterpiece.
Classic Keith (and great effort by Max Durante)

4) Posatronix: that new release on Planck Era is really something else.
5) Orlando Voorn: The new ignitor series is great, I play out the TANK
release a lot. Hes also re-releasing a lot of gems.

6) Juan Atkins: The new fast forward series is very imaginative techno.
7) Sterac Electronics: I love all his new electro cuts.
8) Isolee - have you heard the Pony the Funk rmx? Or the Recloose rmx
he's done?

9) Dex: The electro cut on Motech 5. Submerge.
10) memory Foundation: Great techno on central.

looking for some advice here.

I could use a new backpack for my vinyl. The best one I've seen are the UR
bags. They are made of strong material and have shoulder straps so I can wear
it like a backpack. They also stand upright when full of record (some bags tip
over) and have a large enough front pocket to carry around a good amount of
stuff. The only thing Im not so sure about is the logo, I dont like wearing
logos like underground resistance because when I travel, I get flagged.

I might just get the UR bag, but I was wondering what you folks use? If you
really like a bag that has a) shoulder straps, b) stands up right when full of
record, c) strong material, and d) large pockets...please let me know.

have a great week gang... And pickup the new sterac on your next trip to the

taking a cue from Bone..which is a good thing.

Also, I wanted to mention that Orlando Voorn has re-released basic
bastard 4, and has now officially released basic bastard 5!
And...(drumroll) ... Los Hermanos 5 is now available through Submerge (
on 7 inch)

Did I mention the new hieroglyphic being samples! More great music,
you can hear samples at dancetracks.com

.
you still reading? go get these records! ;)

yeh don't get me wrong they're both super dope. I wrote that last
message as the second track was coming in. that release is my favorite
from bone so far. having given the rest a listen, I'm not as keen on
the dj lohie (who is he?) as i am on the two bone releases, but it
still kills 98% of recent techno activity imo. but that's just me.

Im not sure where and when Alex got his info, but this is a "snip" of
the press release that matt passed onto the list on June 22nd:

--
Kraftwerk " 12345678 - The Catalogue" will be available on September...

In a recent interview to italian newspaper La Stampa, Ralf HĂĽtter
confirmed release of Kraftwerk remastered albuns (12345678 - The
Catalogue) on September, 2004.

They will be available in separated pieces and as a box, with the
original artwork when they were first published.

The 8 albuns (Autobahn, Radioactivity, Trans Europe Express, The Man
Machine, Computer World, Electric Cafe, The Mix and Tour de France
Soundtracks ) will be published in CD and  vinyl, and later in Super
Audio CD, in both English and  German versions.

It says vinyl right there, unless their plans have changed and I don't
know about it. Alex?

2004-09-22 Thread jason kenjar
First of all, A warm thank you to lady Adia for posting this! Posts
like these are what keeps us on the inside track.

List, your keeping very quiet on this. Follow the link and check out
the audio samples...

So, What do you all think? I'm kind of on the fence.

Strenghts = It does sound very musical in a larger than life kind of
way. I like how 0-1 really stab at those synth lines. Some of the
effects are really interesting.

Weakness = Very clubby sounding, complete with excessive vocals and a
knack for repeating chorus lines. KSR "somedays" is on the album and
I'm not into Lorne's material. Did I also see Blackwater on that LP?
jeesh. Enough already.

My two cents:

Over all, Im looking forward to the release, I certainly won't pass it
without a listen. But from the few songs I have heard, as well as the
recent eps, this release hasn't convinced me that its of quality equal
to many of 0-1s previous releases, or the RNG releases (the live mix on
the Mills DVD was incredible). "Perhaps" because the increased
involvement of Lorne. Lorne was 9 years old when he watched his older
brothers create Day by Day, it's obvious that the real talent flows
within the older brothers. I'm not hating, but I just wouldn't put him
alongside his brothers in terms of having the gift. At least not from
what I've already heard by him, but maybe he'll surprise me on this new
releases? I still really hope Lawrence and Lenny go a few tracks alone
on this one. I could use some new (old) Octave One ;)

Group hug for Aida for being on point!

(313) loosefingers vs loosefingers 2

2004-09-17 Thread jason kenjar

My opinion,

There isn't anything wrong with the oosefingers ep pt. 2, but its just
"ok". Is it something special in my opinion, not really. But the
loosefingers ep (part 1 if you will) is a deep house jewel. I even
wrote a review just for this list about. Larry Heard is certainly a
fantastic producer of deep house, and it really comes through on the
first "ep"

You get what you pay for with Newmark ;) I would not recommend them if
quality is a concern. But they are wallet friendly, not a bad idea for
starting DJs who really need money for records.

I had their first model of direct drive turntables.. they felt like a
pair of playschool "My first DJ" toys. Yeah, they could do some cool

My mixer of choice for now is the pioneer 600. Im familiar with

it,

I've got one, and I love it. Some of the features are handy as

heck,

especially when you want to boost the over-all volume of a record

thats

got a quiet cut, like old Kraftwerk records for example. I can

bump

the bass on computer world! I would say the range of volume the

mixer

allows to move around in is fairly large, and its for the better

unless

you got some nitwit redlining everything.

You mention quality is a big factor in your choosing mixers? Im

pretty

big guy who more that occasionally strong-arms the levels and

whatnot,

but its held up near perfectly after daily abuse for a year and a

half.

One of the little auto quantize buttons isn't as sharp as it used

to

be, thats it.

I know some people say it doesn't have the warmth. I wont

disagree.

I've heard warmer sounds, but like I was saying, I fluctuate

between a

lot of different styles, so that range of volume the pioneer

produces

is worth it.

Plus, Pioneer has a reputation. While Im anxious to try new

mixers,

Technic turntables and a Pioneer mixer is a tried and true

combination.

At least you know you will get quality as opposed to blowing all

your

cheese on the newest thing only to then find out it has some

awkward

design flaw or something. I've seen that happen before, not

pretty. Why

not stick with what has worked before is my opinion as of now.

I realize this kind of thinking can be looked down upon in a

community

where progress is imminent and people are always looking for the

next

new thing. But I spin vinyl on Technics, and in my personal

vision,

that combination stands alone. I guess the world of mixers is

give and

take, but until I find a mixer that blows away the pioneer in the
aspects I listed above, I'll stick with it.

Sorry to get going on the 313, i'll get back to my one or two

line

"this record rocks" reviews next time, but I hope you liked my

opinion.

If anybody reading this in the Iowa City (midwest) area has a

favorite

mixer, i'd like to be so bold as to ask if I may try it out. just
holler!!

boring

records and force the mixer to play them.

Afraid I cant help much with a tracklisting. But that material is hot. Does
anybody have a clue what those tracks are? I wish Hood and Mills would get back
together for just a little while, imagine the possibilities... Until then
uncovering gems like this will have to do.

Thanks Ivan!

I really dont mean to sound like an ass, but I must declare This is NOT

(313) new der zylkus

2004-08-10 Thread jason kenjar

hey folks-

Just listened to the new der zyklus *teaser* at Formic website. Im
not feeling those tracks at all. But if you like your other zyklus
records as much as I do, you will probably want to listen anyway.
Has anybody heard the new album in its entirety? Has any of their
older material found its way on the new album? In that case I would
certainly give it a listen.Im crossing my fingers, but Im not to
pleased from what I've heard.

2004-08-09 Thread jason kenjar
Pardon me "Mr. taylor", but I dont see how somebody who spams the list
daily with one or two quick sentences of over-simplified arrogant
generalizations has the guts to call the discogs website "sh!t". Im
just one of the many free users and am not affiliated with the site by
any other means, but I still have to stand up for them if you feel it
necissary to besmirch their name.

Discogs has been very helpful to me in the past. I can only recollect
a fraction of the many times I have found discogs to be totally
helpful. Knowledge is power, and there is a lot you can learn if your
are willing to spend some time researching discogs. its also totally
free, you dont even have to be a member to search its information
libraries.

And is it so unthinkable and unforgivable that there would be spotty
information about Basic Channel? I consider myself a fairly well
informed member of the under ground community, and even i think all the
basic channel records look alike. Artists like von oswald arent about
advertising themselves nearly as much as you do for yourself.

Re: (313) 3 Chairs - Chicago

2004-08-09 Thread jason kenjar

Hey, I'll add a little to the review as well...

backstory: I was in town and happened to check my email earlier that
day @ the public library to find out the three chairs were playing only
four or five hours later downtown. My source of into? The 313 list!
keepin on yo!

My friend and i got their early, almost the first people down there @
10:30 or so. Marcellus Pitmann was spinning, I guess he must have been
standing in for Malik Pittmann who was a no show?? haha..just kidding
matt.. Anyway, Marcellus was playing nice groovy midtempo house stuff.
I didnt recognize the tracks, but I liked them a they were certainly
proper tracks to be opening the night with. Seemed like a nice guy too,
but we didn't talk long.

Rick Wilhite is a great Dj as well. As he played the place was slowly
filling up. He played more mid tempo house as well, but also dropped in
some other great stuff. He did a couple of very tight mixes from house
into broken beat detroit, and right back again in an interesting
manner. It can get kind of sticky some times if a DJ cant make their
transitions in a manner that makes sense for both the mind and the
feet, but he did it. I had the pleasure of meeting both him too, he is
a hell of a nice guy.

I wasnt sure if it was ricks last record, or theo's first but somebody
dropped fix-flash...thats a good way to become my friend if anyone is
interested. One part voorn, one part beer... and mix yep :)

I think Matts description of the rest of the night is accurate enough
so I'll leave it at that. We left around 3:30 just to beat the rush. I
cant believe how late chicago bars stay open... or how crazy the
streets are at that hour.

really pounding disco and jack-y raw classic chicago trax and heavy
percussive disco and as usual EQ boosting and killing every track to
within an inch of it's life. This can sound silly when you hear his
mixes at home, but on a packed sweaty dancefloor people were going
ballistic for it, and I was lapping it up. At times looked like he
was having a seizure behind the decks and the energy was emanating
outwards... the floor was full early.

Then Moodymann took his turn sporting a freaky halloween mask, his
afro all blowed out huge, and it was a Rick James (R.I.P.) love fest..
he started with 'You and I' and played it start to finish, then later
'Cold Blooded' (god i love that percussion on a big system) and lots
of cool disco, also Moscow Discow, rolling stones 'Miss You' (!), the
3-Chairs 'Theme' (also featured on their new 3xLP which is great,
BTW)... prince - controversy (w/ everyone singing the "people call me
rude, i wish we all were nude" part, hah), anyway if you like dirty
disco and detroit house and occasional italo and dusty dance oddities,
these guys deliver. Though I usually have no idea what these guys are
playing, KDJ seemed to stick to some of the more recognizable cuts but
this was fine with the crowd to be sure. The crowd was whooping big,
etc. when new tracks where dropped and it was fun to have that kind of
a basement house party atmosphere, oozing sweat and spilled drinks
everywhere, haa. Unfortunately i had to leave before Rick Wilhite
and Malik Pittman got on the decks. I have heard sometimes these guy
just play slower dusties and downtempo soul/funk stuff all night, but
on saturday it was all about he energetic dance cuts and that was
great to see.

Also i think the fact that The Reader FINALLY game someone decent the
'critics choice' regarding dance music didn't hurt attendance

Note: After a few close listens, i found that parts of the record tend
to drag a little if you aren't reading along with the song. Its still
hot, but I would recommend finding the juicy bits of the record where
the synths really kick in before you play it out. You'll know what I
mean once you listen. The drum programming is very tight, but at times
I yearn for a few more keys and a little less talking. I would like to
revoke my placing it as one of the best eps in the past few months. I

What's up? I'll tell ya whats up!

The Narcotic Syntax on Perlon! It's nothing short of amazing! Please
take my word for it and pick it up on sight.

Its a really unique combination music and poetry and story. Get this,
all the poetry in the music has been printed on the inside paper sleeve
to read along as you listen. Here is a little snippet of narcotic
poetry which explains their work- its on the sleeve too:

" All notes of this daring construction are formed out of the remnants
of a music culture from the last white spot on the jungle map. Every
single sound has been placed into the composition by laborious,
time-consuming manual operation. The arrangement is not from this
world. The groove orbits around your own passion. The rhythm wins the
fight of love for detail. "

If you don't already want to run out and listen, don't let rely on
on-line samples or a quick stop at the record store to make your
decision for you. Take it home and read the poetic stories as you
listen.

My pick of the friggin' year so far, and what an amazing 5 months it
has already been! Its a really good time to like electronic music,
folks.

order from Hardwax is inevitable sooner or later, no hurry.

As far as future Rhythm & Sound Projects...uhh sure Alex...

I have lived in and around the middle of nowhere USA for the last 24
years, but I'll go hook up with my buddy Moritz to see whut's happenen
down Btown! Cant get him to stop talking about his up coming projects
actually.

You need anything from Saint Nick while I' m at it :) I think Andrew
mentioned something about Bigfoot and the easter bunny

I can't help there I'm afraid Jason, but maybe a good idea if you want
to

get them all in one go would be to order them from here www.hardwax.de

they are still available over here. let me know if you have a problem,
I

could probs suggest a couple of shops you could order them all from.

btw, while we're on the subject, it's been a while since the last one.

is that it finished now? or are there more in the pipeline?

Mate, not this or any other time! You're talking about physics. It's
simply

not possible to have the same sound on a 5-track 12" side as it is on a
one-track 10" side. I mean, just look at the things side-by-side -
they are
physically very different. It's like expecting a guitar the size of
your arm

to sound like a Strat.

Just knit picking here, but these pressings have 4 tracks per side. I
knew it wouldn't be the same as my normal pressings I buy (1-2 a side)
but i was hoping that 4 tracks, each off a 10" to one 12" would not
depreciate too much beyond what I was used to, but it did.
I can only thank the laws of physics for that. What's with mother
nature and all her stupid laws anyway.

My opinion is that I really like single-piece LPs, and they are a rare
thing

these days. You lose amplitude (volume), but you gain a nice 'item'.

My biggest disappointment was when I found out they were pressing 8
tracks on one record. It so happens I'm missing every release on the
LP. If it was a double Ip could have used that to complete my
collection in two foul swoops. my pov! I have seen a lot of hip hop
single LPs around though if that fits your bag

Worth
it, for me. The 10"s are still being pressed, so what's the problem?

First of all- for all those interested in the Burial label and are
considering investing in the Artist's / Version LPs -

I headed to the record store the other day where I listened to a short
sample of the first two tracks on the artist's LP. I could tell that
the sound was very clear, but it lacked the overall power of monster
deep compressed bass being pumped through the speakers. Within 20
seconds I was totally convinced that the LP just gave up too much of
what I loved in the burial sound.

If you just want the songs (I like most them! ) on vinyl for a cheap
rate and/or you aren't up for searching out the individual 10"s, get
the LPs. But it just kills me to pay a shade under $40 for two 12"
vinyl's of second generation Burial material with the crust already cut
off. I'd rather keep looking for those 10" records with the magical
pressings, rather than a crowded LP with a weaker press.

Going into the record store with this on my mind, I wasn't expecting
the LP pressing to be exactly the same as the 10", but how close would
it get? This isn't a small time, nickel and dime record label (bless
them !), or some crazy rouge bootleg squadron. Moritz and his
mysterious entourage have proven themselves as a combination of
successful business people, gifted artists, and technological
innovators. Anything is possible with those guys, perhaps they have a
type of vinyl pressing machine that could save me the trouble and money
of shipping the little records in from all over the place? nah...not

Morning Sherlock

; )

You forgot to add "the bass is not as deep and the kick is not as hard
on
the LP because the grooves are tighter together and they had to be
adjusted
at the mastering stage because if the bass and drums remained at the
same
level on the LP, the record would skip all the time as the needle
wouldn't

be able to track the groove properly"

or something.

sorry for being rude, I don't mean it, just a lil drunk from last night
still, nowt personal.
I'm gonna terrorize everybody today.

In answer to my own question I posed yesterday about the quality of the
burial LP pressing, the bass is not as deep and the kick is not as hard
on the LP. Sound quality on the 10"s are better.

Re: (313) Burial mixes

2004-05-25 Thread jason kenjar

Wait a minute...

I love the burial mixes for many reasons, among them is their
incredibly deep reverberating, yet astonishingly precise bass lines and
percussive patterns. Yet, I find myself missing 3 or 4 of the Burial
10"s I'd really like. Turns out that the Burials happen to be pressed
on a 2 different single album LP formats, with 4 tracks per side. Thats
good news, unless of course, the grooves are too crowded, which often
is the case when people opt to press LP's on one disc instead of
multiple discs. Crowded grooves can cause all sorts of sound quality
problems including a diminished low end sound , but Im sure most people
here already know what over crowding can do to sound quality. I've
learned this lesson the hard way times and ended up unsatisfied with a
particular pressing.

Ken, on a personal tip. I might be dumb as a rock and equally
untalented, ask anyone :) Don't patronized me while you are trying to
invalidate my curiosity in the same breath. My concerns are valid for
the content which this community is based upon.

So, once again list readers. Anyone care to contrast / compare the 10"s
vs. the LP formats of the burial label, especially the level of the
bass lines and kick drums? Please do so very critically as i would if i
could.

hi 313

has anyone noticed if the kick drums on the Artists/Versions
compilations sound as deep or kicks as hard as they do on the 10"s?
I'm

kind of picky, so listen carefully if you can and tell me what you
think.
