I remember that too Tristan. I was already familiar with the character of the Le Carre novels when happening across the name used as a pseudonym, so assumed the same thing as you. Part of the way through I couldn't shake the notion that I knew the name George Smiley from somewhere. Then it clicked. He was the original (313) list admin back in the day. From the time that I joined the list around '98, he never really posted much, but it occurs to me now that this was more likely to have been a pseudonym than a coincidence. Anyone know who George Smiley was? Just curious if it was one of the later (313) admins in disguise, or maybe one of the hyperreal people? Clearly not really important, but it just made me curious, especially given the fictional character. Cheers, Tristan Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device

Org Subject: Re: (313) As I'm sure most of you heard: Real Scenes: Detroit RA Sent: 11 Aug 2011 15:43 Mike Huckabee's educational work is amazing. He's a guy that, unlike many of his peers in Detroit, stayed in Detroit and dedicated himself to keeping it a vital center for musical innovation. He did it, I believe, at a personal cost. If all he cared about was making money and becoming famous, he could easily have moved to Berlin, gotten a good booking agent, and hooked up with European labels. I don't mean to criticize the people who have taken that path -- if it works for them it's fine -- but there's no denying that moving away changes their music. Instead he's stayed true to the city, true to his own music, and perfected the art of DJing. And he's taken direct action to help the young people of Detroit, who face serious obstacles to finding a place in the world. I admire a lot of Detroit musicians, and certainly isn't alone in his commitment to Detroit. In particular Underground Resistance and Submerge have demonstrated a deep and sustained commitment to the people of Detroit. There are others but to list them is to risk leaving someone out. What really makes me return again and again to the music that comes out of Detroit isn't a particular style, it's the deep, clear-eyed emotion and soul that infuses the best Detroit music. Music can point to itself, it can reflect listeners' aspirations back on them, it can start a party. Or music can do all that, and point up and out of itself. It can make you think about the world in a different way. Thanks a lot for the excellent, informative post Mr. Huette :) I'm happy to admit I also particularly like it because I agree with your sentiments near the end! Ken Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device -Original Message- From: Fred Heutte Date: Wed, 1 Jun 2011 01:59:03 To: <313@hyperreal.org> Subject: (313) more thoughts on Movement 2011 Monday was a good day at the festival. I arrived in time to hear TP on the main stage bring Strings of Life into a remix of Patrice Rushen's "Haven't You Heard" (I like Steve Rachmad's "A Lot of Love" on Spiritual/Outland more but this version was slower and more in line with the mix). Terrence was in a vocal mood, singing along with several tracks. And he played "Blow Your House Down." Couldn't ask for more. I liked DJ Three (Chris Milo) on the Beatport stage playing an unhurried set of solid acid-tinged stuff. Boo Williams and GU were unfortunately stuck in the underground stage; when will Paxahau finally admit house just doesn't work in there? But I spent most of the day at the Made in Detroit stage. Just missed seeing Franki Juncaj (formerly the friendly guy at the register at Somewhere in Detroit and also a quite good DJ), but heard a lot of District 909 (Tim Baker and HD Substance). Tim Baker has had some interesting releases but I wasn't sure what to expect, and what they deliver is basic stripped down live techno sliding back and forth between really tough and cool and somewhat aimless. Next up was DTM on 5 turntables, that's right, count 'em, 5x5. It could have been a classic pileup but actually it was kind of fun. First up was Throw as the soundbed, which is the obvious way to get started and it went from there. Layers and layers of tracks'n'scratches. Then DJ T-1000 or as known among these parts, Alan. You know what he does and that's bring it up to a high level of intensity and lets it roll. As good as AO was, Claude Young finally had the time, the space and the crowd to really throw down -- nearly two and half hours worth. Everyone I talked to including the man himself felt the inspiration. It's not just about playing the great old records, as great as they remain, or the great new ones, still fresh and not struggling against familiarity. It is about playing great music with purpose and precision. It's what Detroit techno at its best truly represents. And now some comments on the festival itself (I'll save my rant about afterparties for another time). With a year away due to work requirements last year, I have a little more perspective perhaps than I used to, having been to all ten from 2000 to 2009. First of all, what's working right? Paxahau has a business model that actually works. They are putting serious, serious cash into upgrading the sound, the staging, the lights and all the little things needed to make this work better every year. Even the underground. The big improvement to me was the decision to get rid of the tents for the Beatport and Made in Detroit areas and invest in real stages. The music selection is somewhat less adventurous than I suppose could be imagined, but it is a pretty decent job for what it does. There are too many overrated European superstar-or-wannabes on stage for my taste, but they bring in a crowd (see "business model"). On the other hand, I can complain about Fatboy Slim or whatever but they also bring in Adam X who rocks the box. I didn't feel this year like there were periods where nothing decent was on offer, which was the case in previous years ago for considerable parts of the weekend. And I want to call Paxahau out for praise very specifically for one thing: the strong commitment to live performances across all genres. They not only book creatively on that, but they obviously put serious effort into providing the staging and support needed, from equipment setups to sound and lights. The ticket prices are reasonable given the size and breadth of the event. The lines were better run this year, and amidst the usual carney fare they brought in Slows -- epic win. The not so good parts. Well, obviously it's a white people festival now. I'm not sorry to say it so bluntly. It is in the city of Detroit, but it does not represent Detroit the city. Why? This gets back to "business model." When the festival was free, the city did come, and not just because it was free, but because the proportion of known Detroit talent was higher. The organizing of the festival was drama supreme in the early years, but out on the walks and in the stage audiences, it was inclusive for all of Detroit and the region. So Movement has evolved from being a somewhat disorganized civic celebration to being more of a destination event for the suburbs (see "business model"). Give Paxahau credit, the Made in Detroit stage is an explicit nod to where this all comes from and provides (some) space for the various threads of Detroit techno and house for the last 30 years -- but only some, a

Would one kind soul reply if they see this, just a couple of words will do, so I know that I've been successful this time. Cheers in advance. Ken ...yes, it's a discogs.com job. But there are some indications that the signs are more solid than they sometimes from discogs. This relates to a member (or an alias of one or more members) of Scan 7. The member is 'Black Man'. Why I think this is interesting is that there is not another artist in the database called 'Black Man' or any other derivative of that name. Strange. You'd think it might be chosen by at least one other person, obvious as it is. Check out the release links for Black Man. Just literally this minute got back From The Big Chill festival were these two chaps played. They also came and did a back-to-back set for Big Chill Radio (where I was working) so I got to chat to them at length, especially DJ3000. They seem to be friendly, down-to-earth, unpretentious blokes, with good senses of humour. Watch out for 3000, there's a rich seam of influences in him which will produce some interesting stuff, I'm sure. The eastern European influence - he's of Albanian extraction - is becoming evident in his recent music, I feel. But at the same time, it's obvious from his accent that he hangs around with a lot of African Americans, not to too fine a point on it. There's no doubt, he's being groomed by the more senior UR members to be one of the next generation of representatives. He and James Pennington played a smart set of electro-funk old and new, especially in the radio studio. It was a lot of fun and such an antidote to rather too much of the 'Berlin-by-numbers' which I almost feel spoon-fed at the moment. Look out for 3000's mix CD 'Perseverance'. I'm listening to a promo now and it's a good showcase of his current style. By the way, does anyone know who are the two French guys who were just signed to Axis? They were in the UR entourage but I didn't get to talk to them. Maybe someone mentioned their names, but I've forgotten, alas. Ken Music is an open sky. http://bleep43.com

(313) 'Snowflake falling' ...
Just looked-up Juan Atkins on the iTunes Music Store. There's a lot of classic stuff on there (including some of the great recent New Religion material.) But wait. What is this odd-looking entry on an LP called 'Christmas Eclectic' (genre: 'holiday') with a track called 'Snowflakes Falling'? The compilation appears to be a sort of Christmas gift record. I'm not wanting to believe that the track 'Snowflakes Falling' is actually the man himself. Going by the sample, it's about +12 on the cheesy, cornball, schamltz scale (add your own adjectives!). It's got kids singing, twee lyrics, triangles etc. But I have to say: those chord changes, that melody, that bassline, even the synth sequencing they *do* have a certain familiar feel to them. Someone tell me I'm way off-beam or this may turn into a little cause celebre! Ken Music is an open sky. http://bleep43.com

I've not enough time to do a line-by-line consideration of what's been presented here, but *based solely on the short excerpt given here* and being what I consider to be an open-minded person, who nevertheless relishes an intellectual punch-up, I'd challenge anyone to defend most of what he says as more than sixth-form essay standard. It's a shame really, 'cause it's an important set of ideas which Reynolds addresses. I am interested in reading the book though - I'd happy if he demonstrates that we're all wrong and he's right, and perhaps he does indeed do that in the rest of the book. So. I'm not going to indulge in ad-hominem arguments - and I'd suggest that no one here should. For me, these are never acceptable, but in this case, they certainly don't appear to be even necessary. After all, his thesis should stand or fall on the soundness of his reasoning only right? Having said all that, one thing which I can resonate with is the need to cull excessive reverence toward any type of movement in music. To me, that's pretty superfluous too. k

Stoddard Turner Broadcasting Systems ___ I don't know much more about them then I said really. I'll admit to being a relative newcomer to the so-called 'West London' sound (I've really only started paying attention in the last 3 years.) I'm a bit puzzled about the 'uk/intelligent techno' bit of your subject, but I sort of see where you're coming from (unless I missed something, not being sarky, I probably did). :-). I've also been pretty much 'floored' as you were, ever since I got my head round that first LP 'Seduction at 33 1/3.' It's not the most accessible first LP ever but repeated listens are well rewarded. It's diverse and deep stuff encompassing elements of hip, hop, jazz, blues, r'n'b/soul, cinematic themes (yes!) and even explicitly African rhythm patterns and sounds. And of course that all-important and all-pervading atmosphere of experimental electronics. For me, that's where the characterisation as 'intelligent techno' can be correct. (However, I think it's correct for lot of music which some people wouldn't agree on, notwithstanding the slightly bemusing implications of the term - i.e. the old insinuation that some techno is 'dumb' techno - no comment on that.) It's pretty easy to see why the group's music has been embraced not only by the sort of broken-beat crowd as much as by people (like me) from - but not attached exclusively to - the school of the 'classic' techno template. We will tend to be over 30 years old, by default I guess. This is perhaps why Blaktroniks tracks have been (re)mixed by producers as diverse as Domu, Mike Grant and Move D. Whilst I know that the group had an enthusiastic response in Germany, where there's a pretty deep tradition of 'urban' guys from America performing 'wierd' music, we all know that despite our little 313 world, and a little beyond, it's not necessarily appreciated in their home town. (Or state for that matter.) Also, having a well-known writer on electronic music single them by saying their first LP sounded 'like a demo' didn't help either! ;-). (I personally like some releases which sound like 'demos'!). A major element of that first LP was that sort of sketchy quality on *some* tracks. They sounded live. I think this is deliberate. I personally didn't think it detracted from how much I liked the tracks. The instrumental tracks sounded as 'finished' and dance-floor orientated as most things, to me, however I know the Mike Grant reworked versaion of 'Raindrops' (making imo an already strong track, into a good 313-house track) got them some attention around these parts. I'd suggest anyone who liked that, to check out the LP. It's on CD only alas, although there were some 12s on Moving Records, which included quite a few of the LP tracks. I'm still intrigued and eagerly await what Blaktroniks might do next. To hear the most recent (I think) manifestation of where they were at check out this: http://www.discogs.com/artist/Blacktroniks. (The group is listed on discogs site under two different spellings! That's discogs for you.) That EP on Reflective was much more in-your-face-electronic and club orientated, with sort of Chicago Underground Council meets Co-op beats. All in all, whilst I think it will take some time, I still do believe that a deeper cult appreciation, and beyond, of what Blaktroniks do, will come, on the strength of what I've heard by them so far. k

Ja'Maul Redmond I was talking with a Canadian about this at the weekend (not sure if the guy's is still on the list, he said he used to be.) I was somewhat surprised to hear that techno, in the widest sense, was still 'happening' in Montreal (more than Toronto). Maybe I shouldn't have been though, with the well-known ascendance of the glitch/minimal house trend in that city. I suppose the Mutek festival is the best manifestation of that. Maybe we should now conclude that for music at least, Canada is closer to 'Detroit' than most of the USA, quite literally. And now, perhaps more than ever! Aiden O'Docherty quoth: and that aii track off the narita 'terminal one' 12" comes second with connective zone's 'function' track third. not that you care, but i've had my fun and that's all that matters. Jaded? Not I. 'Life Is An Open Sky.' (Or maybe it just feels that way right now 'cause I've got a week of loafing/doing what I like ahead of me rather than working.) Coincidence: I just picked out the same EP. I think I decided that track was the best off it too. Reasons to be less jaded: 1. Force Inc. relaunches as Force Inc Music Works this month at POPKOMM music conference, Berlin. Not everything they did will be to your taste, but some will, and it's gratifying to me that an established name in our music has survived its troubles of last year. re: (313) techno isn't selling
[EMAIL PROTECTED] said in response to Matthew Mangold: yes, as I said, it's not that I don't believe it - I'm just curious to see if there are stats/charts/bar graphs/whatever in any trade magazines. from what I read recently - vinyl is actually becoming popular again, very very slowly, but still... by the way, there's many reasons distribution companies go out of business besides direct result of drop in sales at the retailers. Nemesis could have been managed poorly from within on all sorts of levels. They might have grown out of touch with the changes in the US dance music market. Not saying that's the reason they've closed but it's just an example of things that happen. It's not always 1+1=2. Same goes for record retailers. They open and close more often than distributors I would guess. MEK * Michael, I sense that your difficulty in accepting easily that what Matthew Mangold and others are reporting is a widespread thing, might have something to do with the fact that you've recently returned from travelling to Europe (and other regions) where 'techno' and all related styles of music (and 'dance music in general) is stubbornly selling quite well, if not exactly having a renaissance. To me, this underscores the notion that non-traditional forms of expression in general, seem able to make marked progress everywhere but in early 21st century America. Am I wrong about this? Seriously, it's not a rhetorical question. I'd like to know what people think. k

Record shop/label owners who in all other respects seem to support and safeguard 'our music' should perhaps think a little more deeply about the whole Buzz/bootleg thing, because it does raise some contradictions (such as those very shops which support the scene, contributing to hurting it!) although I stress, the whole issue is difficult and as for Buzz, it isn't entirely clear that the original artists/labels aren't deriving some indirect benefit. On the whole however, what you've observed is the age old problem of prejuidice, percieved or actual - this can play itself out in ways which are obvious enough. Sometimes it really is there, sometimes it isn't. Not everyone's as enlightened as they ought to be, not everyone can tell the difference. And that works both ways too! Also, most people are conservative in deed if not in mind, they stick with what they know and surface appearances are everything, as is going along with the crowd. The ironic thing is, of course, the African-American roots of a lot of this music, including so-called hard techno! So you have a situation in which people of colour in the UK and Europe are rejecting a music in which people of colour in the US, played a large part (and still do). And this applied even when the music was relatively new and therefore still more easily traceable to those roots. k
RE: (313) If
Yeah I only found it on vinyl in the summer so I was bemused at the quite whack 'mega mix' style wrap-up on the final side! Spin-back city! Plus the pressing is pretty weak in volume. There is (I think?) though, a longer version of 'Share This House' and some tracks make more sense it seems to me via vinyl. All in all, it was a good introduction at the time, and some of the Derrick May-produced tracks are still of interest - e.g. 'Un Deux Trois.' Plus of course there's 'Spark': Beautiful and not available anywhere else. k > >I got my copy out last weekend, have you heard the mix side lately? The press release the other day about the new Dark Comedy LP reminded me to dig out the other Dark Comedy LP, 'Seven Days' and the 'Exhibits' comp on Art of Dance. Is it just ancient me or is this stuff still very good indeed? Deep textures, many varieties of rhythms, all encapsulated in that indefatigable Detroit blue. If this doesn't teach me to pick this kind of stuff up on vinyl at the time, instead of the latest short-lived thing, nothing will. So far the new one seems only available on CD in Japan ... http://www.diskunion.com/clubt/detail.php?tid=CMTE-9991283 (What kind of name is that for a record label, by the way!;-) k
