Re: [313] Ableton Live
Believe it or not, some people don't use pirated software on principal, particularly from small, or new companies. It's true for me (for small/new companies). I had the choice between using a cracked copy of FMHeaven or paying $70 for it, and I decided to pay for it because the developer is just one individual who was extremely helpful and courteous while I was testing the demo. Although I have been guilty (like most) of using cracked copies from big companies. If I love a particular program I wind up eventually buying it. Kevin __ Do You Yahoo!? Final Scratch can also play wav files, so someone using FS doesn't necessarily have to worry about the low quality of MP3's. Kevin --- M. MP3 is a compression algorithm which lops off the signal at the extent of the human hearing range (ie 20, 000 Hz but most codecs lop off around 16, 000), and the sub-extent of human hearing (around 20hz but again most codecs lop off around 100Hz). At the club however the is no roll off, and things like these become more apparent. Worse is the fact that despite our inability to hear these frequencies, we can hear the harmonics that they create with frequencies we do hear. Re: QRe: [313] ANyone know about Finalscratch (maybe OT)
Since high quality waves (24/96) will be big files, there's less of a chance from finding it on a P2P file sharing program. So people downloading a track someone made could be stuck with a low quality mp3 since that's all that might be available. In contrast, if FS is popular and they like the mp3 they downloaded, they could buy a CD at their local record shop that contains the track in wav format. With harddrives getting faster, bigger, and cheaper, it's feasible. Just a thought though. Kevin --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: exactly.. you can record to a pristine digital 24/96 environment if you like, and then play that digital recording out. only consideration is file size. so technically finalscratch could sound better than records ever did. as for independent labels and distribution, a) this won't happen over night - vinyl production isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and b) sooner or later digital music distribution will finally dump its two left feet and figure out a way a safe and efficient way to work. seems so ironic that all the hard to find music we buy is almost exclusively on vinyl, when it started out as a digital master. artists need to be paid for their work, but in what format we receive it shouldn't matter. people seem to have gotten used to CDs just fine... plus, if music got cheaper due to the reduced distribution costs, there's a very good chance people would buy a lot more of it. i know personally there's tons of housier records that i ignore every month because it's just not in the budget. this also has huge implications for all the tiny, regional labels out there around the world that very few people get exposed to. We must include one more particularily special point. MP3 Quality at less than a bit rate of 192 sounds shoddy on the extreme low end and extreme high end. MP3 is a compression algorithm which lops off the signal at the extent of the human hearing range (ie 20, 000 Hz but most codecs lop off around 16, 000), and the sub-extent of human hearing (around 20hz but again most codecs lop off around 100Hz). When listening at home this isn't so bad since most in home stereo systems already reduce extreme low-high end by means of a crossover either in the speaker itself or digitally in the amplifier. At the club however the is no roll off, and things like these become more apparent. Worse is the fact that despite our inability to hear these frequencies, we can hear the harmonics that they create with frequencies we do hear. Moreover even without knowledge the producer of the track may have utilized those particular harmonics. With MP3 those will never be heard. I've heard both MP3's and vinyl on the same system, and to be honest unless you have a good soundcheck and all your files are recorded and EQ'ed properly beforehand, your set will sound lackluster. MP3's with a bitrate higher than 192 sound great, the higher the better, but they take up more room. As we progress into a generation where physical memory is no longer an issue I'm sure this will become more viable. [313] Move over HPDJ
This was lifted from a BBS, so I don't have a link to the original article: DJ Robot Turns the Tables By Katie Dean A professor at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is the man behind DJ I, Robot, which is the first random-access, analog robotic DJ system. It's made up of a computer and three turntables that can mix, scratch, cut, and beat-juggle like a human disc jockey. It's a new means of composition and competition, said Chris Csikszentmihalyi (pronounced chick-sent-me-hi), an electronic arts professor at RPI. What's really been fun is coming across really strange sounds that you're not expecting to and deciding that it's not really a negative, but a positive. The machine is hardly musical or expressive. It doesn't have a collection of old records it likes to scratch up. But it can spin platters up to 800 revolutions per minute, compared to 45 RPMs by a human hand. To create the new mixes, 80 breakdance songs were pressed onto each record. The location of each musical element -- such as a particular measure, beat or audio sample -- is indexed on the computer. Programmers mix tracks by dragging-and-dropping each element into a timeline on the computer, then an analog motor spins the platter at the programmed speed and direction. The computer controls the manipulation of the tracks, but the motion is analog. The platter moves as if a human hand were guiding it, but with superior technical precision. Yet it's the human quality that counts in the artistic process, said one DJ. What separates different DJs from each other is how they choose records to mix together, how they mix them, and the kind of tricks they do when they mix them, said Paolo, a DJ who has played jungle and hip-hop clubs in Washington D.C. and New York. A computer is not going to know how to do that. It's missing the inspiration, Paolo said. There's only so much you can program. Would he jam to the mixed beats of DJ I, Robot? That wouldn't interest me at all, Paolo said. That's not the point. There's a certain amount of personal expression going on when you mix records. That's what you're there to see or hear. DJ Qmaxx420 had a different reaction. Bring it on, man! I think it's a great idea, said Qmaxx420, a professional DJ who has played clubs in New York, Germany, London and Tokyo. I think that can be fun and entertaining. It was inevitable that this was going to happen anyway, he said. This is the future. Qmaxx420 said that DJ I, Robot might have some unexpected benefits. Some DJs don't like to spin first or last at clubs, so DJ I, Robot might be a good opening DJ. Also, because the machine has no emotions, it would never feel like it's selling out. Maybe record companies could use it to promote new songs, he said. Csikszentmihalyi admits the machine has its limitations. It doesn't have taste and it doesn't have a sense of music, he said. There's no algorithm for funk. We're faking the funk. Nevertheless, Csikszentmihalyi hopes DJ I, Robot will be able to outperform any human DJ in three or four years. So far, the machine has battled several DJs and has a losing record. It's kind of a remake on the John Henry competition, Csikszentmihalyi said. That's why we've been calling it the DJ killer app. The system has already received international attention. DJ I, Robot was a finalist in the Berlin Transmediale, an international juried competition for software art, and it's performed in a Berlin nightclub, at a street party in Boston and a warehouse party in Brooklyn. The machine will tour Europe this summer. http://www.dj-i-robot.com __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! But who will be on this commitee, and who will choose those people? Marvin said the role of creative director will be filled next year by an advisory board made up of artists and others in the Detroit techno industry. That's still sort of vague. I can think of other commitees that aren't so good, like the people that choose the Grammy awards. Wasn't it the Beatles and Led Zeppelin among others that never received one? Gear questions are best suited on the 313techknow list. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/313techknow But while I'm writing this, I might as well give an answer. I just purchased an sp-808 for $599 at zzounds.com, it was a sale so I'm not sure if the price is the same. It's not the sp-808EX, but it's pretty close (100MB zip as opposed to 250MB zip). There's also a way to upgrade the sp-808 OS to the sp-808EX OS and install the 250MB drive, making it like the EX. I like the 808 alot, I had a Korg ES-1 beforehand that I'm selling right now (I'd keep it if I were rich). Having a zipdrive is great, and it's pretty easy to use. The only drawbacks are 4 note polyphony (which can be alleviated by combining 2 samples into 1) and the 3 control knobs for effects don't send midi out which is somewhat annoying when used in a studio. Otherwise I love it. But I wouldn't pay $1200 for it. Kevin p.s. I mentioned to Ben that I thought it didn't seem to represent his ability as a DJ, which as John says, are absolutely awesome, in fact I have never seen ANYONE with such complete and total control over 2 decks let alone the 3 that Ben usually populates so easily. He put me firmly in my place saying that it is not meant to represent his DJ skills, but to represent the Theory label. I think he's done that perfectly. He hinted also that there may actually be a Sims mix CD proper at some point. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] __ Do You Yahoo!? Re: [313] Ordering Records On-Line
Groovetech is my favorite place. The records you see online are usually in stock, and it only takes 4 or 5 days to get them. I'd stay away from Sonic Groove. They never update their catalog so a lot of their stuff is not in stock, and they're super slow. I once ordered 13 records, and got 2 in the mail about a month later. Satellite records (www.satelliterecords.com) is pretty good because they update their site with new releases every week. It usually takes about 2 weeks for an order to be received. Also try www.611records.com. Their catalog tends to be little out of date, but not as bad as Sonic Groove's. My experience has been about 1.5-2 weeks for delivery. I just stick to Groovetech for the most part, and fall back on 611 or Satellite if I'm looking for something a little older that Groovetech doesn't have. Re: [313] Last Night A Raver Broke My Tonearm
Ouch. Are we going to see a post on some BBS with the subject Last night a DJ broke MY arm? ;) Kevin --- Phonopsia [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: So I'm about half-way through my set last night @ a house party when this guy with *that crazy look in his eye* comes up to the turntables. I finished mixing out of a record and he was just about to put his finger on the record to stop it just as I grabbed it out from under him. As I filed the record away and looked for the next track I noticed he put his finger on the platter and stopped it. As I stood back up with the new record time slowed down. I watched this guy (who was in another world) grab the tonearm, and rip it off the turntable. He literally grabbed it and yanked as hard as he could. However, the tonearm did not completely detatch, the wires inside the tonearm were still connected to the headshell. This did not satisfy him. He gave another yoink and ripped it completely off. I think everyone who could see this happen that owns a turntable let out a horified gasp. As we all stood there in awe, someone eventually restrained him before he could pull the effects box down from on top of a speaker. As he was pulled away from the tunrtables he managed to say but I'm having fun. Talk about being upstaged... Despite having a third turntable there, the rest of my set suffered accordingly. Re: [313] i have to dj and i'm scared.
I've always found most tag team lineups to be a gimmick that promoters use to make their party look special. I know people who've been in tag teams where the promoter just slapped it together, and the individual didn't even know the other dj. Re: [313] jeff [EMAIL PROTECTED]/flame bait?
I agree with Sean, I just wanted to gain some more knowledge. With all the equipment out there, it's hard to tell what's flexible and what's not, except by asking anyone and everyone and getting their opinions. You can only spend so much time at Guitar Center playing on a machine before they kick you out :) I actually try to get stuff that people don't own so I can try to get my own sound/style molded. But in the end, it's the person that makes the music, not the gear. Kevin --- Hodgson, S. R. Why do what's been done? At the same time, it's necessary to find gear that will allow you the flexibility to do what you want, and sometimes I think people are curious about acclaimed producer's gear because they like the direction of a sound rather than wanting to emulate it. And you need to start somewhere. Most innovators don't start out by making things in leftfield. You typically need to learn the basics of what's been done then deviate accordingly. If you simply try to make something different without putting in the time to learn the established technique it won't usually work. I'm the prime example. ;) Consider yourself flamed. Kevin --- Peter Leidy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Personally dont know for sure, But I've been to quite a few shows at Motor that were not advertised on their website. Most recently- got to check out Phoenicia and Richie Devine of the Schematic crew in Florida. It was a really cool live show- basically a bunch of Mac Powerbooks making twisted beats and really thick soundscapes- so many layers of sound- my ears were killing but it was totally worth it. For those not familiar, the Schematic label has been putting out lots of good experimental electro stuff- sort of like autechre/rephlex sounds put to electro beats and breakbeats. anyhow there were only like 30 people there- i dont think Motor promoted it at all. p On Thu, 14 Dec 2000, Kevin Conrad wrote: I was at the Stewart Walker webpage, and he's listed as playing Motor on Dec. 27. Re: [313] goa, 303, 313, heavy metal
I'm not sure if the origins are in heavy metal, but some goa is kinda like Techno meets Slayer. I had some Dark Soho tracks that I got off Napster, and there's some tracks where the song totally breaks into a shearing guitar riff that's reminiscent of old Slayer songs. I spent most of High School and a part of college listening to heavy/death metal, so I know a rippin' guitar riff when I hear one (I never thought I'd say that on this list ;) I actually had to remove the tracks from my computer so Winamp wouldn't shuffle play them because they were sort of annoying to listen to. My heavy metal years are over... But there is goa that sounds more like techno, with a trippiness flavor. Goa does have some diversity, like most other genres (except today's excuse for trance). It doesn't have much to do with previous forms of electronic music (ie detroit influenced) at all... Really? First I've heard that, might wanna tell all the goa heads in aus the same thing too. what do u base this on? The oveerworked 303 sounds and other acid squigglies (tech term folks) don't really make me think heavy metal. mee-funk - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] __ Do You Yahoo!? Re: [313] satellite rec. site
Check your bookmarks. www.satellite-records.com is still the old website with all the old releases, www.satelliterecords.com is the new one. You'd think they would link both to the same page. synth shops
Does anybody know of any good synth shops in Detroit and the surrounding areas? Some places are just guitar shops with a small synth section, and I want to be able to talk to someone that's knowledgeable. Thanks. Kevin __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Messenger - Talk while you surf! Re: [313] the D label
I picked up a D record after meeting the owner (Rexx aka XXX) at Threads one day and checking out the label. I liked it so I bought it. I think he writes under a few of those names for a look of diversity. He seemed pretty cool, down to earth. He's played out at Metro before I think. I don't know the connection with Hawtin though.
