Detor's parties were a major turning point for me. I had a radio show on
our college station between Derrick/Detor crew and Fanon Flowers. Both of
those fellows were instrumental in landing my internship at Planet E.

Incredibly grateful to this crew. Not only for their contributions to the

I think the best way to learn how to write / produce is to start out copying
the shit out of your heroes.

Yes, that yields derivative results, but originality can come later.

In the spirit of this... this is GREAT! <3

2021-02-19 Thread Rob Theakston
Hello!

I'm not sure whether or not I've been on the list longer than you. Heck, I
am not even sure when I joined the list...probably somewhere in the mid to
late 90s, but then came into my own around 98 or 99. Things are just one
giant gaussian blur these days.

For my geography: there are many ways to split hairs on that, with numerous
purity scales out there. Out of veneration to those who have lived in or
served Detroit their entire lives, I usually say "Metro Detroiter". I have
lived in numerous cities around the region, including childhood and
adulthood stints in Detroit. If credibility points are squarely dependent
upon location, I'm afraid I may have some bad news about many of the list's
favorite producers and DJs.

As for who I am? Still trying to figure that one out. If taking a random
sample of people around the community, the answers would range from
"cantankerous, mouthy asshole" to "pretty decent fella". Well aware that I
have pissed off more than my fair share of people over the last few decades.

New Album: 10-20

2021-02-17 Thread Rob Theakston
Hello friends.

This may or may not be everyone's cup of tea, but may pique a few ears.

I have a new cassette out this morning. 10-20 is a collection of live
excerpts, unreleased tunes and other stuff culled from over the last
decade. Beatless, ambient stuff -- so that most definitely rules out 70% of
you. Vinyl and bandcamp to eventually follow, but if you email me a screen
capture of your purchase I will send you a link to the digital files, along
with some other goodies.

https://lifelike.bigcartel.com/product/rob-theakston-10-20

I tend to put out stuff once every ten years, so I promise not to bother
you again for the next 9.5 or so.

Thanks

Re: New stuff

2021-02-09 Thread Rob Theakston
100% agreed on that Rudiman. A great album for daydreaming and motivation.

Will check out that Prekop album. "The Biz" was a staple of my college
years.

Things in rotation this week: new Storm Queen, old adult., new-ish Nate
DeYonker, post-Diane Ross Supremes (RIP Miss Mary) and a compilation of
stuff from an artist named Violet who may not be everyone's cup of tea, but
I'm certainly enjoying it (h/t Kent).

I wouldn't mistake disinterest for silent observation.

I just don't have anything to add of a substantial nature, and would rather
give people space to do their thing. People ought to be able to express

Best Logo?

2020-02-26 Thread Rob Theakston
It's the topic everyone is talking about: who has the best logo on the
Movement 2020 poster? Here's my hottest of takes. Get those oven mitts
ready.

I do appreciate the throwback simplicity of the 9 logo, but
appreciate the Blade Runner nod from Adam Beyer. God love the Swedes for
making Michigan a better place (Lidstrom, Ikea, Swedish Club of Farmington
Hills)

Enrico Polazzo's logo looks like something you'd see from a
pharmaceutical company or third rate lawfirm, and Loco Dice's looks like
something for a vague startup company that has twee ukelele music in their
commercials. Walker & Royce screams "craft beer for men with neckbeards"
and MK's logo is WAY too close to Michael Kors' logo for my liking. Boris
Brejcha is obviously a juggalo.

This concludes my wrap up of the logos on the Movement of 2020 poster. Tune
in next week when I propose Seth Troxler play nothing but renaissance music
and vuvuzela during his allotted time spot.

I am laughing at the idea of a 'serious dance DJ'.

On 18 Jun 2013, at 15:56, David Powers cybo...@gmail.com wrote:

If you are a radio DJ, sure, but from the viewpoint of a serious dance
DJ I would definitely would want an edit for these reasons:

 1. Most important, at minimum you need to loop up something at
beginning and end for mixing into and out of

 2. Typical pop song structure is too short for the dance floor, it
really makes it's point as quickly as possible and suddenly the song
is over. This doesn't create the type of altered state of
consciousness you want for dancers; to me dancing is very spiritual
and you want music/rhythms that are conducive to attaining a real
trance state, without needing drugs. I am not really a big fan of your
normal pop music formulate, it's very limiting.

 3. For me personally, the chorus is a bit too epic and cheese, I'd
prefer to somehow tone it down somehow, filter and otherwise dub it
out, and probably would only let it appear once, not multiple times as
in normal pop song structure. The verse works for me, but it so
clearly leads into the chorus that it probably needs to still occur
before the chorus. So, if I was editing it, I would definitely focus
on the intro bit, and the bridge with the keyboard solo; that changes
it from a pop song into a dance track...

 4. The type of production is really a mismatch in a set of house and
techno records, basically in terms of the drums. Adding a bit of drum
machine really makes it work better on the dance floor. (Remember...
This is EXACTLY what the originators of house were doing with some
 disco records!)

Just one man's opinion, I'm sure others disagree, but as someone who
has released edits, perhaps the above will explain what it is that
drives me to do a bunch of work to alter a song that is already a
good song... in a nutshell, the radio pop song form is quite
different from the type of form I prefer as a DJ. There might be
exceptions when I do play a pop song if I figure out a brilliant way
to mix it in, or it's the last song in a set, or for some reason I
want to surprise people, but it's not something I would do often.

about connecting to a spiritual tradition thousands of years old.
Music has the power to heal, and create very special states of

 of consciousness.

If you examine the way traditional musicians in, for example, West
Africa view music, you would understand what I'm talking about. I have
a friend who is a drummer, from West Africa. He is a griot and is
descended from a family of griots. If you don't know, griots are
musician/story-tellers, and through music they are responsible for
telling the story of their people, as well as healing and other such
things. I see the true role of a contemporary DJ as being a modern
type of griot. They should tell a story through their records, and
connect to history and a deeper tradition through their selection of
 music.

A DJ has an incredible amount of power over their audience. In my
opinion, those who don't take such power seriously, have no business
DJing. They may actually be negatively impacting the well being of
their audience. I do believe that bad music can literally make people
 sick in a psycho-spiritual sense!

I prefer Verdana, but Comic Sans is really useful in my line of work. It is

Tony did our Christmas party and asked if he could play what ever he
wanted, which was fine by us. So it’s got a fair few classics on it, Chi
313, as well as some unusual tracks for Surgeon to play, like Yoko Ono,
some instrumental disco track that I can’t place but defo know, a few
reggae tracks and a mad Black Sabbath edit near the end.** **

The link says part 2, but it’s the whole set, part 1 are the warm up sets.

 Surgeon, December 2005

Terrace did a live set for us and Stefan stayed for a few days to hang out
after he had some fun stories to tell regarding Derrick May Carl Craig.
Towards the end of the live set there’s a full on 303 assault as Stefan’s
partner in the Acid Junkies was also at the party and jump up on stage
and started playing with Stefan, which was a cool surprise.** **

This link is for Terrance Parker who we brought over and promoted the
party as Outlet Collective presents the RUCK, with a few other people
involved in the promotion to help.

TP was excellent and I don’t think the recording does the set justice,
I’ve been told by people that this was one of the fave Outlet parties. As
you would think he goes all over the place and shows his skills off to the
max, 2 copies of loads of records, he gives a little talk at the end too,
 which was fun.** **

Re: (313) Outlet Collective recordings

2013-05-23 Thread Rob Taylor
Ooh what a question.
Despite all the amazing well-known guests, I think the best party was one
at the Rhythm Factory in which you played some ace disco and house to warm
up, Nick Craddock and Rick Hopkins played some banging tunes (DJ HMC's LSD
being a particular highlight), and Haze finished off the night with an epic
eclectic set, despite being under the weather with flu at the time. I
remember going mental when he played Skinny Puppy's Assimilate!
misty-eyed nostalgia
That Surgeon party was amazing too, despite Nick Wilson breaking my
disco finger in a fit of Xmassy exhuberance!

I'm 44. I'll leave Kent to share his age if he so desires.

In explanation: I've mellowed somewhat in terms of the speed of the tempos
I produce and mix as I age.

 Example:
I was lucky enough to have a track released on Matrix back in 1995, but
 quite soon thereafter lost my
master and copy of the CD compilation. At the time the song was produced,
it was the tempo I was into. I only recently
reacquired that CD and I knew, as I was about to first listen to the track
in 18 or so years, that it was going
to be faster than what I produce/play these days. I figured it would be a
 bit faster than
what I'm playing these days. Well, it was VERY fast. I shudder to listen
to it now simply because it is so incredibly fast,
it gallops along like some out of control train. Anyway, that's the way
I'm feeling now as I get older,
I still listen to a huge variety of styles of music, much of it much
faster than the music I play on the show, of course,
but personally I tend to make and mix music at much much slower tempos
than when I was 20 years younger.

Really? I'm not sure what age has to do with it though I suppose it's
more measured with less urgency but no less lively. It's grown-up
music. I'm neither young or old either. I'm not sure I can tell that much

(313) Serious Grooves

2012-02-24 Thread rob theakston
Hello, it's me. I've thought about us for a long, long time.

And I have a technical question for someone who has smarts beyond me:
was Serious Grooves to be considered a KMS sub label or not? I have
conflicting information in my notes from a long time ago, but Discogs
is saying it wasn't, even though it seems as if KMS was fairly
involved in the logistics of the label. Anyone have any first hand
accounts of the accurate story line?

Thanks,

Maybe I'm quibbling over definitions, but 'blatant rip-off' implies
that it isn't as good as the original. If it's good, it's good, and
any stylistic similarities are irrelevant to its quality.

In a certain respect everything is a rip off of everything. Shades
of Jae rips off Bob James.

listening right now to Daydreams In Cold Weather, I can hear the
Plaid similarity, but Tejada is more straightforward rhythmically, and
where Plaid makes melodic puzzle-palaces using random processes,
Tejada seems to use more intentional composing.

TCM airs it sometimes. On the one hand, it's great it was found. On the

scenes it's clunkier, like Dr. Mabuse: The Gambler.

You owe it to yourself to watch Fritz Lang's later films Spies and M

(313) Dan: The T-Shirt

2011-08-30 Thread rob theakston
People of Techno,

Hi. Rob Theakston here. You may know me from such emails as DEMF
Weepy Memories or Does Anyone Know Where The Hell I Can Find This
Glass Domain Record For Cheap?

Many of us have known Dan for well over a decade, and there are
countless others on this list who have enjoyed time with Dan through
his writing.

Through the generosity of countless people, the fund for Dan set up by
his family had exceeded its goal -- which is great news.

However, if you haven't donated already (which btw if you have --
thanks), the fine folks over at Ghostly have designed a t-shirt for
your consideration.

100% of the proceeds will be going directly into a fund to offset any
medical expenses and seed money for his daughter's education fund.

If I know anything about Dan, there was nothing in the world he valued
more than his family, and I would remiss in my friendship to him if I
didn't try to rally around everyone to consider purchasing a shirt to
help ease the burden during such a challenging and tragic time.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me off list.

Thank you for your time. Back to quietly scowling.

Physically manipulating a piece of vinyl by cutting it down the middle

Those of you up early in the US who checked Facebook or Twitter already know
this, but Aaron Carl Ragland died overnight, having just started chemotherapy
for a just-diagnosed cancer.  This is a terrible loss for Aaron's family,
 Detroit, and the world.

I didn't know the man well, other than a couple of long conversations earlier
this year on the phone.  I was impressed by his drive to make things happen
in Detroit, not just for himself, or for Detroit Dance Music (though they
were things he loved DEEP, second only to his family and friends) but the
 next generations of kids.

Aaron was openly, flamboyantly gay man who came out at a time and place where
it was a lot easier to stay on the down low.  The Detroit dance scene is a
lot more open and accepting than the wider culture, but it's a brave man
who's willing to be honest with the whole world the way AC was. Aaron
presented himself transcended his sexuality, it represented an openness and
honesty that's an example for everyone.
Aaron was genuine, authentic, true, no bullsh*t.

And he was funny as hell too. Inexplicably, he was afraid of trees -- can you
 watch this and not laugh?
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJVdtEzUJII

The W.A.R.M.T.H. Wallshaker Compilation he put out last December was a
great example of what Aaron Carl could do -- bring people together under a
positive vibe.  That's what I'll be listening to today, and if you don't yet
have it, you can listen to the mix I made of it:

 http://www.cornwarning.com/chaircrusher/Chaircrusher-WallshakerMix.mp3

AC I love you, and I hope you're slapping skin with Ron Hardy and Arthur
Russell and James Stinson about now, and they've got your crate by the tables
 waiting for you.

Just listening to Q-Moog The Arc of Blueness for the first time in years,
a bit of a lost gem imho. Anyone know what became of Green?

Oh yeah! I almost forgot about that record, that album was amazing.
Mirabella is so brilliant with that hypnotizing vocal in it Cuba,
cuba, cuba energy. I wonder what happened to him as well.
 This album
is the only record i have of Green.

I think that sample's human energy, off The Shamen's Human NRG (first
track on their En-Tact album). I know, I'm sad. It's my indie-kid past,
you see.

Anyways... it's weird how Green completely disappeared without trace after
only 2 12s and then the album (which contains a fair few of the tracks from
the 12s). It's not like the tracks were lousy. The opposite, in fact. A
lost talent.

Other where are they now, I wish they'd not dropped off the face of the
earth:

Art Forest
Nate Krafft
Will Weber (un-subbed from 313, moved to Miami??)
Dave Peoples
Walt J
Dave Whiteside
Sole Tech (hmmm, morphed into a house producer, perhaps, if I remember the
rumour correctly???)

I could go on.

RE: (313) what's new with REAL Detroit releases?

Honesty has it's root in honor aka a showing of usually
merited respect. It was an dishonorable review from a
 dishonest business. Period.

Dishonourable and dishonest? They're rather serious words.

If they don't like the record I would sooner they say so than give it the
old huge record, killer, TIP!!! nonsense in an effort to sell a few extra
copies. And as for them stocking it but not promoting it properly - it's
not their job to promote it, but they stock it so they can sell it to
customers who want to buy it. Wouldn't be much of a techno store if it
didn't stock the latest Kenny Larkin record, on Planet E, now would it?!?!?

Don't know much about them (although the Dissident label has
now put out more than enough high quality releases to shake
 off it's trendy
status!) but anone who like it deep will dig this I think

Brassica. How seasonal. What's next, Parsnip? Anyway, nice track.

(313) Kenny Larkin The Chronicles boxset

also, anybody check the new larkin boxset ?!

Yes, I parted with some hard-earned to pick it up. It's a nice enough
release, well packaged, but the only things which mark it out from the
standard releases in the Chronicles series are the box itself, the two
slipmats, and Kenny's squiggle on the CD artwork. The CD itself is no
different from the standard edition, and neither are the six 12s. I think
it's one of those things which is the sum of it's parts. One for obsessive
completist collectors who're prepared to ignore their responsibilities and
shell-out the cash for it. Guilty as charged.

Musically, you know what you're getting. Consistent high-quality Detroit
techno. I would expect that the majority of us subbed to the list have
heard most (or all) of the tracks before, and a fair few of us will also own
some (or all) of the original releases which the tracks are collected from.
Kenny's The Chronicles mix, which can be downloaded from Rushhour after
you've bought the CD, is worth getting hold of - the mixing's fine, pretty
smooth as you might imagine, and when the tracks are as good as they are you
can't really go too far wrong.

I would say watch out for shady, i mean Aidy from
  vinylunderground,
  located here, http://www.vinylunderground.co.uk ... he
  ripped me off
when I ordered those limited rob hood and kdj recs on
  peacefrog some
years back, i ordered many copies for some friends and myself, a
  large
order, he never sent sh*t, finally sent me a couple of
  copies of each
and was begrudgingly sorry... a shameless thief.

very shadybut maybe he's only shady when he deals with
  americans
or when he can make a few extra bucks by ripping a foreigner
  off...which makes it worse.

I used him for a while, and then he messed up big timeall
im saying maybe it had to do with the fact that the recs
i bought were going for mad loot on ebay at that time
 (moodyman shattered dreams etc..)

Can you expand on your allegation that Aidy is a shameless thief? How did
he rip a foreigner off?

As far as I can tell from your posts, you ordered a number of copies of the
limited Peacefrog EPs and he didn't supply all the ones you wanted. Were
you charged for copies you did not receive?

I've been ordering records from Aidy for over 10 years and have never found
him anything other than extremely helpful and genuine. It's a shame your
experience was different and you chose to raise it on a public forum such as
this one.

A response from Aidy.

Rob

a friend forwarded me a post from 313 which i was a bit surprised about

i do not remember the exact order etc...i'm sure i did mess you about as you
said , all i can remember about those limited peacefrog's is that they were
very limited expensive (100% fault of the label) - we had a one per
customer policy on these things - so maybe we thought you were trying it on
a bit, a lot of people were trying to buy to sell on - we dont use ebay
much and i dont think we ever sold them there , so we'd never keep good
things like that back for that , just to sort out all our regulars.

i wont give you some false belated apology as i'm sure i apologised at the
time

we NEVER EVER charge for records we do not have in stock - 100% my business
policy - your confirmation would of said full amount as thats automated ,
but your credit card statement will show revised amount - obviously a
mistake could of happended but it hasnt yet in 15years and its too long ago
now to look into that.

i'm not shady , and if anything i treat USA customers better as they are
normally serious guys , what with having to pay more shipping etc! - that
was the thing i took offence too - record errors/shop mess ups do happen.

anyway just wanted to say that as the online/digital world can be full of a
lot of information/talk about people -

analog regards.
