PLURkids Obscured - Tonight - DIRECTIONS

2000-06-03 Thread Shane from PLURkids

Hi all,

Ok this is basically the info as it will appear on the infoline, so
PKU'ers don't need to call it at all :)

PLURkids Obscured is at a new (yeah, as in VIRGIN) space. The best part is
that it is SAFE. Basically, it is what we always dreamed of having and never
did, with a huge paved secure parking lot big enough to hold every car that
might come, clean bathrooms with running water, and room for literally 3000
or more people to dance all night. Think Fathom, only bigger and with safer
parking. Please respect the space, or no one will ever get to use it again -
the owner was really difficult to say the least.

All people attending this party will have to go through a map point. There
will be two map points to choose from - Tron Records on Woodward Ave in
Ferndale, and a gaming store called The Only Game in Town two doors up
from Detroit Threads on Jos Campau in Hamtramck. ALL PEOPLE ON THE GUESTLIST
AND BIRTHDAY PEOPLE MUST GO TO THE HAMTRAMCK LOCATION. THAT LOCATION WILL BE
THE ONLY LOCATION WITH FREE TICKETS AVAILABLE. We'd like to encourage people
to go to the Hamtramck location as their primary choice, so if you are
undecided or don't care then go to that spot. Both map points will open at
8:30pm, doors to the space will open at 9pm.

*NOTE: There will be no entry onto the premises of the space without
your ticket, and to get past the guard shack to park you will
have to have tickets ready to show the guards.

Directions to the map points are as follows:

PRIMARY MAP POINT: THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN, HAMTRAMCK
-
If you know how to get to Motor or Detroit Threads, you can easily find this
place.

From the NORTH: take I-75 South to the Caniff exit. Go left across the
freeway and travel east about a mile to Joseph Campau. Turn right and go
about 4 blocks. Look on your left hand side for The Only Game In Town. The
address is 10034 Joseph Campau. It is two doors north of Detroit Threads.

From CANADA: 375 is closed right now, so you will probably have to go north
on the Lodge (10) to Davison Ave East to I-75 South. Caniff will be your
first exit, so just stay in the right lane and then follow directions as
above.

SECONDARY MAP POINT: TRON RECORDS, FERNDALE
--

From all points, find your way to I-696 and Woodward Avenue (between
I-75 and the Lodge Fwy). Go south on Woodward Ave and Tron Records is about
1/4 mile up on your right, between the freeway and 9 mile. I think 696 is
open now, so there should be no problem with getting there, but just in
case, from the west you can take 696 to 10 (Lodge) South to the
10Mile/Evergreen rd exit, then go left (east) and it will turn into the
service drive for 696 just before Woodward ave. Turn right onto Woodward and
Tron is about 1/4 mile up on your right, between the freeway and 9 mile.

Map points open at 8:30 pm, doors at the space at 9pm. From 8:30pm until
12 midnight, you will be able to purchase tickets for $25. After midnight,
the price will be $30. The first of the headliners is on by then, so come
early and groove with us. Birthday people with photo id are in free, and out
of state (including Canada) get in for the presale price of $20.

All headliners are confirmed and most of them have arrived already. They
all tell me they can't wait to play on the 4-corner Turbosound rig, now
increased to 54 bins. Once again, artists performing are:

- Kevin Yost (i! Records, Pennsylvania/NJ)
- DJ Fluid as Afro-Mystic (Om Records, San Francisco)
- DJ Steven Sacks (Premium Soulsonic Megajive, San Francisco/Atlanta)
- DJ Huggie (Global Energy Musik, Los Angeles)
- Adam Caruso (PLURkids, Detroit)
- Jonathan Voigt (STATE:AWAKE, Ann Arbor)

MOST IMPORTANTLY:
This is a PLURkids event. That means we are all about Peace, Love, Unity,
and Respect. It does not mean that we tolerate drugs, violence, or bad vibes
of any kind. We will have people walking around who's sole job is to make
sure everyone is safe and having a good time. If you are there to cause a
ruckus or sell your shit, don't expect our firm but friendly security to be
so friendly when they eject you from the party! Please leave the anger at
home, or don't bother coming. If you have love in your heart, come, share
it, and be blessed - we'll see you there.

Kindest Regards,

Shane

I have to second this. The Real Estate Records releases of Jacq material
are excellent, in my opinion. I have a copy of another Jacq record on the
same label called Rhythm Composer, that I just love.
The funny part was that a year ago when I found the record, I mistakenly
thought it might be an Acquaviva pseudonym, because of John's email address.
I asked him about it and he said good things about Jacq, but assured me
there was no connection. I thought I was really onto something...

Looking for some vinyl like THIS

2000-05-11 Thread Shane from PLURkids

Hi all,

I have this incredible record on Afterhours called No Time To Lose
(Dirty Hands Mix) by Les Macones De La Musique. It's funky, tribal
percussive house, but you could play it back fast if you were Kenny Glasgow
and the techno people would dig it too. Anyone have any suggestions for
similar tracks? Just looking for ideas from the peer group...

HardHouse?

I didn't know there was a difference. Isn't it also called HardHouse?

Actually there is currently a fairly strong distinction (Stateside,
anyway) between that music and hard house. Hard house is much more loopy and
4-4, and definitely less complex. It is closer to tech-house than to
trance/hard trance/acid trance. Derrick Carter plays techy and hard when he
comes to Detroit, and it always upsets me because elsewhere he plays much
more upbeat and eclectic.

June 3 guestlistings for out-of-town DEMF visitors

2000-05-03 Thread Shane from PLURkids

Greetings,

In light of the fact that a few of you may be traveling to Detroit for the
DEMF from quite a distance, and might be staying for a few extra days:

WHAT:
Any people from as far or farther away than Toronto who wish may be
guestlisted for our June 3 (the saturday after DEMF) event in Detroit,
featuring the deep, funky, percussive house stylings of Kevin Yost
(i! Records NJ) and DJ Fluid (Om Records SF), as well as a 48-bin,
four-corner Turbosound Rig by Midnite Blue. Yep, it's a rave so be prepared
for a few of the newer school mentality to be about, but it's a clean 50,000
Sq. Ft. warehouse venue on fenced private property (with clean bathrooms,
natch), so there will be plenty of space to get your groove on without
getting run into by someone needing a backrub.

An electronic version of the flyer can be viewed online at
http://www.plurkids.com

HOW:
To get on the guestlist, simply email me no later than Thursday, May 25, at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] with your full name, and the full names of anyone
attending with you. One ticket per person, and you'll need to present photo
ID (that looks like you!) proving how far away you are coming from on the
night of to gain entry.

CONFIRMATION:
I will send out confirmation of all guestlist requests via email. If you do
not receive confirmation via email, then you are not listed.

May all of your travels be safe - I can't wait for DEMF!

(313) 6 Parties!!! and Billy Nasty

2000-03-20 Thread Shane from PLURkids

Ok, now let me get this straight:

I Survived Y2K is on friday, so it doesn't count other than as a party on
the same weekend, BUT...

Sat. the 25th:
1. Morning After

2. Dis-Connected

3. Rise and Shine

4. Peep the Technique

5. Kingpins 2

6. Microrave

I believe this marks the first time in Detroit history that there has been
SIX parties in a single night.

Sadly, it looks like once again the party with the best talent will be one
of the least known, too. I'd like to throw in my $.02 and tell everyone
willing to listen that BILLY NASTY IS DEFINITELY worth seeing. I have been
listening to his recordings of both progressive house and techno for a long
time, and I'm consistently impressed with his work.

Now I don't have anything to do with any of these parties, and in fact I'd
really like to go to Kingpins 2 (I may party-hop) - so much respect to
everyone trying to do a quality party this weekend -

but if you want an education, go to Dis-Connected.

Dis-Connected 03.25.2000 Funhouse, BHP, Trancended (313)438-4054
(313)438-4111 Billy Nasty (UK), UMEK (UK), OS/2 (TO), SPINZ w/ MC Trigger

they get away with that? Does that mean that once
you're famous you don't have to try anymore?

And another thing - once you're famous, does that mean you don't have to
create danceable music anymore? The groove matters, and if these producer/dj
names that WE all respect and love are not in some way also endeared to the
younger generation, how can we expect them not to lose their way? Granted,
the scene isn't what it used to be, but then we all knew that would occur
- and since mainstream acceptance in the states seems to be some way off
yet, shouldn't these artists continue to stay in touch with underground/rave
culture? (Uh oh, now I've said it...)

When Carl Craig performed Paperclip People live for me in December, there
were WAY too few people who were into it - and the Paperclip People material
is generally much more digestible to the average partykid than much of the
music we're talking about here.

(313) Ian Hind's 21st Birthday Party

2000-03-07 Thread Shane from PLURkids

Hi all,

Ian Hind sent me the following email about his birthday party, which is
next saturday the 18th. For those of you who don't know Ian, he performs
minimal techno with 3 turntables, a dp2 effects processor, a Roland TR-909,
and an SH-101. His feats on the decks have earned him public respect from
none other than Richie himself, and I can say that I've consistently been
amazed with his prowess and ability to operate so many pieces of equipment
simultaneously. Besides that, Ian is as old-skool as they come, and yet
still sports a seriously good vibe. Anyone looking for really good techno
next saturday should consider attending - I know I'll be there.

The lineup:

Ian Hind - dex/dp2/tr-909/sh-101
Rob Dearlove - dex/dp2
DM - dex/ and a toy box.
Phat Albert - rx5/efx/apple

(313) We Like You Humans

2000-03-06 Thread Shane from PLURkids

Hi all,

Just thought I'd drop a quick note about the We Like You Humans party
that occurred on Saturday in Detroit. The lineup included Heather Hart, Adam
X, Twonz, Murat, and Kenny Glasgow, among others.
There was a fair amount of hype for this party, since it was the first large
primarily techno party in Detroit in a couple of years.

So, on to my opinions:

SPACE: I'll spare too many comments about the space. Suffice to say that the
location used is probably the most overused space in Detroit history.

SOUND/LIGHTING: Lighting and sound were just slightly better than average
for a Detroit event. God I miss Burst! Mike/Sam/Brian, PLEASE agree to do
parties again!

DJ's:
-
Heather started off great, then got loopy and repetitive. She seemed to bump
the tables a lot, then look suprised. Not full of wrecks or anything, but I
expected better from someone who has been around that long.

Adam X was better, and had some focus and direction to his set. I have one
major complaint though: he rides the mixer continually every time I see him.
There was no discernable motion to the L.E.D's at all - just peaked in the
red. The compressors were not sufficient to clean up the dirty signal he was
providing, so the bass sounded distorted the entire time. He was under the
influence of something, maybe just drunk - but he was slurring his words
when in conversations, and his mixing was sloppier than I'm accustomed to
seeing from him.

Twons Murat were right out of 1996/97. It was as if I had left Detroit for
a vacation and came back home. Although I don't like their track selection
personally, it was still like a time capsule for me. Murat was NOT having a
good time, though. They were in the second room, where the equipment was
more substandard, and if you were talking to a friend within a row or so of
people away, he could hear you and be distracted.

By 3:00 I was ready to leave. I decided to wait for Kenny Glasgow to go on,
and at least catch a little of his set before giving up and heading home.
At 3:30 am, Kenny came on, and took us to SCHOOL! This was absolutely
excellent, and I wish I had more techno background so that I could discuss
specific tracks. I couldn't tear myself away from the decks to dance for
more than a few minutes at a time, before returning to watch a few mixes.
The crowd really woke up for this man, and the whole party was made
worthwhile for me my friends, all in this 1.5 hours. Wanna hear about
tracks? Ask Derek Plaslaiko - he was dancing his ASS off for the entire
time, and came up front after to bug Kenny and share grins with all of us
who had been so impressed.

All in all not a bad night. Two years ago, I would've said it wasn't a very
good party at all - but compared to the current state of parties in Detroit,
this was one of the better ones. Certainly the best of 2000 so far, IMHO.

(313) How about another house track origin?

2000-03-02 Thread Shane from PLURkids
Ok, since all of this talk is going on about some of my fav old house
anthems, perhaps someone can help me find a track I've been looking for:

The track appears on Jeno's United DJ's CD, and is listed as
Jeep Grlzz - Smokin' Daughters.

There appears to be a misprint and the date of the release says 1986.
I can't recall the listed label, but I think it was Chocolate Music.

(313) Thanks...and nyaaa to the cops!

2000-02-08 Thread Shane from PLURkids

Hi all,

Thanks so much to everyone who made it out to the PLURkids Club Night on
friday. It was so much fun doing something that we knew couldn't get shut
down. We even had fun playing with the undercovers that came in. I mean,
come ON: if you want to be undercover, don't be so obvious! This one woman
looked to be in her mid thirties, with clothes from the eighties, a long
black leather coat, clutching her purse carefully, and asking everyone who
appeared to be having a good time, Do you have any ecstacy to sell me?, or
Who has the drugs here?. She asked one of my friends, Are you on
ecstacy? (he wasn't), and then Oh. Well, who has some? (he didn't
know)...I told her she wasn't going to find that stuff here, it's a drug
free club night, not a party.

So then her two male companions (also really not enjoying the music at all,
and examining everyone carefully) proceeded to ask every under-21 female
they could find if they would like me to buy a drink for you? It's ok if
you're underage, I can do it.

No one accepted any drinks. Then we tried to get them to have fun.
They were humorless, and left within a half hour. Thanks for contributing to
our take for the night, coppers!

hehe.

Anyway, a drama-less evening, and it was fun putting it on. I managed to get
Steven Sacks to agree to come back to the house and do a deep set, and he
went for three hours! It was a journey from the present to the past,
culminating in tracks from 93' and 94' that blew my mind.
Thanks once again to all who came out, and congrats to Dillon, KG, and
Tracey for their success too! The map thing worked well (once we got them).

Hi all,

Tomorrow night's PLURkids Club Night is all set. The new Steven Sacks CD's
came in from the manufacturer, and they look/sound great! We're all set, but
the space is small so I suggest you come early. The thing runs from 9pm -
2am, 18+. I'll post directions in another message.

For all of the people that still attend parties, we will have numbered
maps to Share the Love (an all boy-girl tag team event in a virgin venue on
the east side) at our party - pay $5 to go to our thing, then take a map
over to Share the Love and get in there with it for another $5. This way you
can hear the west-coast house that is PLURkids, and party hop too, all for a
total of $10!

Well, here's to everyone having a fantastic time wherever you go - there's

closed during the weekend, so I'm going to provide the quick/easy method and
a backup just in case, ok?

QUICK EASY METHOD:
--
Find your way to I-75 and Caniff. Caniff is just south of Davison Fwy.
Exit at Caniff/Holbrook. Go East on Caniff.
Go past Motor Lounge and take the first right - that is Conant.
Go South on Conant for approx 1.5 miles, under a railroad viadock.
Space is about two blocks up on the LH side, after the viadock.

IF YOU ARE COMING FROM WEST (like Ann Arbor)
---
94 East - I-75 North.
Exit at Holbrook/Caniff.
Turn right and go East on Holbrook.
Go 5 or six traffic lights and you will come to Conant.
Turn right and go south on Conant, underneath railroad viadock.
Space is about two blocks up on the LH side.

I-696 DETOUR (From NW suburbs like Novi):
--
696 East - 10 (Lodge) South.
10 South - Davison Ave/fw East.
Davison East - I-75 South. Stay right.
Exit at Caniff, turn left onto Caniff.
Follow directions as above.

Enough directions? Email me if there are any problems! You can also call the
PLURkids infoline and get the same thing as above, only with better music in
the background...:)

Everyone have a safe and fun weekend!

(313) The new Steven Sacks mix CD

2000-02-01 Thread Shane from PLURkids

Hi all,

Apologies for the cross-post.

The new Steven Sacks CD's will be here by Thursday, just in time for the
PLURkids Club Night celebrating this new release on Friday. This is a
professional production run, 80 minutes long (not 74), remastered from the
original live recording, with jewel box/cover art/shrink-wrapped, etc. If
you want one, they will be on sale for the discounted price of $10, only at
the club on Friday night. After that, you'll have to go to Threads/Groovy
Train/Record Time, etc. and pay their prices...

Hoping to learn some new dance techniques this weekend,

Shane

(313) A little reminder...

2000-01-27 Thread Shane from PLURkids

Hi all,

The PLURkids club night is next Friday, Feb. 4.

Since I'll not be doing any flyer for this and it is an email/word-of-mouth
only thing, and because people have been emailing me asking about it, I
thought I'd re-post the info to the lists.

Incidentally, the reason for no flyer is two-fold:
1. The joint only holds 150 peeps if we're lucky.
2. I love computer-centric audiences.

There will only be one more message about this sent to the lists - next
week, when I post last minute info / directions, etc.

take care!

PLURkids Productions is proud to announce a one-time only club night,
dedicated to HOUSE music, and launching the nationwide release of Steven
Sacks' new mix CD. Details are as follows:

PLURkids Club Night
Friday, February 4th, 2000, 9pm to 2am

With DJ's:

Steven Sacks (Super Duper House Collective, San Francisco, Hum, ATL)
  *** Extended Set ***
Those of you who attended Clavius Bass back in June, or saw him
take the decks after DJ Sneak and Carl Craig at Come Together in
December, will recall this DJ, known for long, multiple-record
mixes of West-Coast house. This is not a DJ that connects a bunch
of records with mixes; he is a DJ that connects a bunch of mixes
with records. Steven has chosen Detroit to launch the nationwide
release of his new mix CD, and we are delighted to be his hosts.

Adam Caruso (PLURkids, Detroit)
We have watched Adam mold his own style since 1994, and into
1998, when he was on San Francisco's own A.M. Crew label.
In 1999, we convinced him to be a PLURkids DJ - come see why.

Jonathan Voigt (UM Housing Authority, Ann Arbor)
After much hype from others, we gave this new DJ a listen, and
are glad to put the PLURkids stamp of approval on his Mark
Farina inspired track selection. Hear and see what everyone's
  been talking about.

Location/Cost:
---
Cloud 9
8534 Conant, Hamtramck
313.923.

ADMISSION WILL BE $5.00 ALL NIGHT. Sorry, there will be no guestlist for
this event. Capacity is limited to 150 people, so we strongly suggest you
come early!

Also, all attendees will receive discounted admission to the Trancended
party happening on the same night, so they can head over there afterwards.
We'd like to show our support for one of the new promoters tying to do right
by Detroit.

Call the PLURkids infoline for updates and directions to the space:

(313) In this world...

2000-01-14 Thread Shane from PLURkids

Hi all,

In this world, there are dj's, and there are DEE JAYS. Last saturday night
at a club called Lush in Atlanta, I saw a DEE JAY.

His name is Steven Sacks.

We recorded his set before a live audience that was absolutely screaming.
These people are true house heads. They didn't scream at the break, they
screamed at the _mix_ . And this wasn't a party, either. It was an
afterhours club, with the varied audience that results. There were all kinds
of people, all adults, and very few that were visibly on drugs.

The resulting set has been remastered and the first 80 minutes is Steven's
new nationwide-released mix CD. It'll be ready for production in a few
weeks, and Steven has asked PLURkids to host the launch. I'll send out a
separate email detailing the event shortly.

All people interested in advance copies, stay tuned for further details.

Warmest regards,

Shane
