(313) Stewart Walker remixes Martin Gore

2003-04-16 Thread Tim Pratt
has anybody heard the Stewart Walker remixes of the new Martin L. Gore (of
Depeche Mode) single I Cast A Lonesome Shadow? they're on the Stardust
single, from the forthcoming Counterfeit2 album by Gore. release date for
full-length album is slated for april 29 though the single just arrived today.

The tracks are pretty good, if not quite similar (one is vocal mix and other is
instrumental mix both by Walker). Definitely a Depeche Mode vibe, with
Stewart's intricate production skills shining through.
i was surprised to see Walker's name on a major label, that's for sure.

jurren's lazily funky-ass mix was a nice way to ease into my sunday.

[313] global underground - mixing in the studio

2001-05-09 Thread Tim Pratt
Most of the Global Underground CDs are not live mixes at all.
The majority of mix CDs are produced in the studio.
Or in some cases, CD mixers are used. I was shocked when I looked at the
back of Carl Craig's recent Shadow Records mix Onsumothasheeat. it says he
used two CD players (i believe Pioneer, but i can't recall for sure - i
don't own the CD) and an effects unit for the mix.
Recently, I interviewed Darren Emerson and I asked him whether his last
Global Underground CD was live and he said I put it all together in the
studio. You're not Djing it.
also, talking about his upcoming Global Underground Singapore release
(coming out in July, recorded new year's eve), Emerson said they recorded
his entire set, then Listened to what I played and put it all together in
the studio and recaptured the performance. The last one I did on computer,
but (singapore) was half live and half computer. Of course, I've done a few
tricks with ProTools and plug-ins.
He went on to say that a lot of people do it on the computer, but you don't
get that human feeling, that human filter. However, it can come off as too
polished.

really, i think global underground (as well as many other labels) invests so
much money in these releases (and they sell pretty well), they want
perfection.

on the other hand, there's nothing like a live set. Carl Cox's live CD he
released last year included crowd noises and came off as much more
authentic. but who knows..they probably spruced it up.

one more time - DEMF trips from outside the U.S.

2001-05-07 Thread Tim Pratt
A few weeks back, I posted a message saying I was interested in talking to
some folks coming to Detroit for the festival.
I received a number of great responses, but need a few more.
So if you're heading to the DEMF and you live outside the U.S., I'd still
like to hear from you. This is for a story that will run in a Detroit-area
publication. Basically, I'm interested in finding out why you're coming, how
far in advance you had to make your plans, if it's going to be costly to
you, what you expect, if you've ever been to the U.S. and/or Detroit, if
you're coming by yourself or with a group, and so on.
Please email me back privately.
Thank you!

top 13 for 4/20 -- laptop thread

2001-04-20 Thread Tim Pratt

here's a list of at-home listening stuff I've been enjoying lately, some
old, some new.

Plaid - Double Figure (warp)
Mouse On Mars - Idiology (thrill jockey)
t-1000 - Last DJ On Earth (pure sonik)
staedtizism 2 ~scape: compiled by Pole (~scape)
Kraftwerk Expo Remix: Rolando, UR, Francois K, Orbital (emi)
Tino's Breaks Volume 5: Dub (dub-L) --and/or-- Jack Dangers Hello
Friends (shadow)
Wagon Christ - Musipal (ninja tune)
Floppy Sounds - Short Term Memories (wave)
The KLF - Chill Out (tvt)
Richie Hawtin/Pete Namlook - From Within 3 (minus)
Bonobo - Animal Magic (tru thoughts)
LTJ Bukem - Producer (good looking)

regarding the recent thread on laptop use in live settings:
I just caught Chicks On Speed and Kid606 last night in SF. i've seen 606
three times now and it always strikes me as funny that people stare at him
while he sits in a chair looking at two apple Powerbooks and messing with a
Kaos Pad. i don't necessarily see anything wrong with artists using laptops
live, but i think people just want something to look at.
remember when techno was billed as a faceless music, when the music was
supposed to be more important than the DJ/producer?
ah, how times have changed.

DEMF plans for people outside the U.S.

With the DEMF less than two months away, I'm sure many people outside the
U.S. have already planned or are making plans to make the trek to Detroit.
I'm working on a story about global attraction to this event and I'd be
interested in talking to people about their travel plans. Doesn't matter if
you attended last year or not.
Please email me back privately.

oh yeah...also - Anyone in the Bay Area catch Cari Lekebusch and Joel Mull
last Thursday? Lekebusch was especially good, I thought. Billy Nasty is
playing this Thursday.

Jeff Mills Detroit show

I sent this to the list on Monday but for some reason, it did not go

I recently interviewed Jeff Mills and I'd like to talk to a few
people about The Wizard and his impact on Detroit techno. I'm
especially interested in people that saw him spin at any
Detroit-metropolitan area (an example would be the Nectarine in Ann Arbor)
in the late '80s/early '90s or remember
listening to his radio shows. This would be for possible
publication. If interested, please email me privately sometime
today. Thanks.

Hawtin, Acquaviva rip it up in SF

2000-09-26 Thread Tim Pratt

Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva played rock solid sets in San Francisco
Sunday night. Sure, the club probably wouldn't be my first choice (1015
folsom - with a sometimes shaky, cheesy crowd), but the sound system there
IS excellent, which helps. John's set was funky AND fresh, while Richie's
set was fierce, pummelling and incredibly technical. Nothing like starting
off the week right by being sonically blown apart by Hawtin's Techno mayhem.

In a somewhat related note, we spotted Detroit's DJ Bone at the same club
Saturday night, waiting in the guest list line for the Deep Dish show.
And the guy working the door at 1015 went to Cass Tech (he spotted my
Michigan ID). Detroiters are everywhere out here.

cheers.

A Guy Called Gerald hits SF

2000-08-25 Thread Tim Pratt

I realize A Guy Called Gerald isn't Detroit, but he has a lot of connections
with Detroit and also played at the DEMF.

Anyway, Gerald played three sets in SF last night at Amoeba Records, a Beta
Lounge live set and at Justice League.
I missed Amoeba, but at Beta Lounge (www.betalounge.com), he played
predominantly House and Techno and very little Drum 'n' Bass (and looked
very bored for most of the set).
Yet, at Justice League, Gerald played some grinding Techstep for an hour,
then stopped and started playing Tech/House to end the evening. Good stuff
if you're into A Guy Called Gerald, definitely a wide variety.

alan oldham (t-1000) set ruled

2000-08-21 Thread Tim Pratt
i also caught most of alan's set at the rawhide in SF friday night and would
definitely agree with Phred's assessment of the set - alan ripped it up! the
crowd was totally into the music and party organizers were told by the club
owners that they've never seen so many people dancing at one time to a DJ.
at the end of the night, the whole bar erupted in applause.
people are still talking about it today at Listen.com, so methinks this was
a winner.
re: stacey and derrick set - i did not go inside, but the locale was less
than to be desired, especially since x-games party was happening on the
other side (and i was at x-games party for awhile - cool lineup, lame
crowd), thereby increasing the idiot quotient. Beta Lounge did have some DJs
spinning in the private lounge area at the x-games event, but the beefy
security guards proclaimed it offlimits to almost everyone in attendance.

Detroit was representin' in San Francisco last night. Alan Oldham played a
really good driving set at the Listen.com event, preceded by my friends
Forest
Green and then Andy J (Astral Matrix) playing live. And Carlos Souffront
was
there too, taking it all in; I believe he's on the bill tonight at the same
location (the Rawhide II at 7th Folsom). Carlos is in town for about a
week, doing the tourist thing and checking out the record stores :)

I also went over to the King St. Garage for the XLR8R party with Stacey
Pullen and Derrick May. This was less than wonderful, which is no surprise
given my lengthy and difficult history with 174 King. I only caught the end

of Stacey's set, and everyone seemed pretty into it, but Derrick's was all
fits
and starts. Giving due, the crowd wasn't really focused either. I've had
some
great nights at King St but this wasn't one of them.

Anyway, I finally got to see AO, and you have to admit, the man really
enjoys
what he does :) There was a problem with a loose floorboard, and even
though
the event manager put some foam underneath the turntables before his set,
the needles were bouncin'. So Alan stops the music, explains the situation
and says, you know, I really can mix or something to that effect :) After

everyone close in backed away a bit, things were fine after that, and he
gace
us maybe not the totally banging stuff but pretty much, which is quite
something
to see in San Francisco.

Burden Brothers inquiry

2000-07-18 Thread Tim Pratt

I'm in the process of putting together a story on the Burden Brothers
(Octave One, RNG) in relation to their 10th anniversary of 430 West and
their impact on Detroit techno for the Detroit Free Press. I have already
talked to the Burdens and I am now attempting to get input from others.
It has proven to be more difficult than I had imagined getting in touch with
people for this story, so I am posting this in the hopes of attracting
anyone who feels like they could and/or would want to go on record. Whether
you're an artist, a producer, a promotor, or simply a fan of the Burdens'
music and labels, I'm interested in hearing what you have to say.
Please contact me via email privately within the next few days if you're
interested.

Also, Thanks to those who responded to my posting a few weeks ago regarding
the WEMF in Ontario. Due to circumstances beyond my control, the story was
pulled at the last minute due to space constraints. Such is life with
newspapers sometimes.

downtempo groovin'

2000-06-19 Thread Tim Pratt
As a longtime fan of nearly every genre of electronic music (well, maybe not
gabber or happy hardcore, but still...), I have to say that downtempo has
definitely warmed my ears the last few years.
Some people confuse trip-hop with downtempo, and frankly, a lot of
descriptions depend on who you talk to and where you're living, but I
usually think of downtempo as being a bit more abstract, sometimes vocals
but if so, sampled and/or looped vocals (not always, however).
When I think of a downtempo label, the first one that comes to mind is Ninja
Tune. I find that a lot of downtempo stuff has hip-hop elements melded with
jazzy stuff, but I also think downtempo has as much to do with a certain
type of groove and lifestyle -- namely, smoking pot/ganja/kind buds (et all)
and downtempo DEFINITELY plays a big role and enhances the musical vibe.
That said, I don't think it's necessary that you smoke the ganj to enjoy
downtempo, but the two do go hand in hand.
I like stuff from Fila Brazillia (they have yet to release a bad album),
Kruder Dorfmeister (which includes offshoots such as Tosca and Peace
Orchestra) Thievery Corporation, pretty much anything on Ninja Tune
(Mixmaster Morris/Irresistible Force, Amon Tobin, Jazzanova, Up Bustle
Out, Funki Porcini, DJ Food etc.). I think David Holmes' stuff borders on
downtempo and it's not that jazzy. Nightmares On Wax is another good one (he
even has an album titled Smoker's Delight from '95).
And then we haven't even begun to approach the similarities between
downtempo and IDM or experimental stuff (aphex twin, autechre,
squarepusher), stuff i got into before downtempo reared its friendly head.
And you know, you can never go wrong with The Orb, chillmaster supreme.
Boards Of Canada are like downtempo and IDM combined and pretty much rule,
as well.

I'm sure there's stuff that I'm forgetting. And besides recloose, theorem
and some of the others you mentioned, I'm sure there's more out there even
in 313 land.
btw, whatever happened to raves or parties that included Chill-Out
Rooms? Used to be there was always a cool-down room, but not so much
anymore, which i think is too bad.

detroit vs. bay area, fila brazillia

2000-06-04 Thread Tim Pratt
after spending more than three days immersed in detroit techno
last week, i'm spending this weekend in the San Francisco Bay
area looking for jobs and whatnot.
The interesting thing is how so different the two scenes are.
Bay area is known for such a wide diversity of sounds, which i
can definitely appreciate, but the two big scenes of late seem
to be the turntablism/hip-hop thing and the trance stuff.
last night i was listening to this late night radio show called
subsonic and it was pretty cool, though a bit heavy on the
trance stuff. to me, trance hasn't evolved much since its first
heyday in the 93-95 amid the Goa and happy hardcore trends.
anyway, despite the fact that trance is more popular in the West
(John digweed is spinning tues, for example), i did notice a few
interesting detroit names on some flyers on picked up at a head
shop in Mountain View (basically, Silicon Valley):
Quest July 1, Santa Clara Fairgrounds, San Jose -- Richie
Hawtin with .. Terry Francis, Kevin Yost, Dieselboy, J Majik,
Fierce, Dara, Sage, Christopher Lawrence, Joshua Ryan, Taylor,
Doran, Mars, etc. www.silverpearl.com
Metropolis June 17, Santa Clara Fairgrounds -- Stacey Pullen
...with Gene Farris, DJ Dan, Sandra Collins, Angel Alanis, De La
Soul, Rahzel (roots), danny tha wildchild,
www.clockworkeventz.com
Cyberfest July 22 -- Santa Clara -- Juan Atkins . . . with
Paul Oakenfold(! ugh!!), Carl Cox, ED Rush Optical, Digital
Underground, Aphrodite, Mix Master Mike, Wish Fm, dave ralph,
bt. www.coolworldprod.com

lastly, anyone into fila brazillia??? very cool stuff. any
downtempo fans?
detroit still rules

demf cancellations/ me neither - influences

2000-05-26 Thread Tim Pratt
Couple 'o things:
1. I was told Isotope 217 and Laurent are
definitely off the bill. I do not know why. i
would like to know why jeff mills is not on the
lineup. i hope he just shows up somewhere.

2. The Orb was my real introduction to techno
music ('91's the orb's adventure's beyond the
ultraworld) as far as taking it to another level
–– and the first time i heard it, i did not
understand why there was so much talking,
samples, spaceships, etc.., i cringe everytime i
read my cd review i wrote while working at my
college newspaper . . . but i digress.
I would cite Depeche Mode as my earliest
influence, only because it was the first band
that truly got me interested in electronic
sounds, textures, etc. in music. the mid-'80s
stuff is what i got into, though it was after the
fact.
And i went from being a pseudo-metalhead to
loving depeche mode. as one might expect, my
friends at the time didn't really understand. i
made new friends soon after...
but i also was into a lot of wax trax and related
stuff including 242, front line assembly,
ministry, meat beat manifesto (who i think is
sorely underrated), PTP, acid horse, revolting
cocks, even NIN.
hell, i always thought the KLF were pretty good
cheeky fun.
K-L-F!!! uh-huh, uh-huh.

see ya'll this weekend.
dance til ya bleed with joy. i know i will.
