(313) The last T-funkshun

2005-12-30 Thread Scott McGill
So our residents party on Boxing Day brought an end to T-funkshun in
Liverpool, as we know it.

I would just like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has
supported us over what is just short of five years. Time to recouperate and
lick our wounds and reflect on glorious events.

Much respect and thanks to artists who have appeared in that time including
Mike Grant, Shake, DJ Bone, Damon Wild, Mathew Dear, Derrick May, Larry
Heard, Baby Ford, Terrence Parker, Tristan Watkins, Alex 'Baz' Bond, Stewart
Walker, Dan Bell, Thomas Melchior, Kenny Larkin, Rolando and many more.

Will be back in another form someday.

Regards,
Scott McGill

The Larry Heard night will take some beating, but with the usual electric atmosphere in place, and regular friendly crowd should make this one close contender. Mills had some idiot throw a cup at him and quite rightly got off.
This is what happens when you play a big cheesy night club.

I tried getting onto Jeff's management about playing at our Detroit loving
techno night in Liverpool - T-funkshun. She would only answer my requests by
saying try getting Christian Smith on first and he'll tell Jeff what it is
like. :((

Mr Grant, it was that club I took you too the first time you were over. That
is were it happened. Yousef off Radio 1's night.

By the way, a scally is as Alex said, and very similar to the kids who egged
Alice's car when you were riding shotgun last time.

Chav = a scally, but that wasn't good enough for southerners, no, they had
to make their own poncey name up, yes. Media driven bollocks.

The problem is now resolved. We have just receiving a mail who inform us

Now, the international achievement is for Juan atkins, Derrick May and Kevin

I was thinking about this the other night and it often shifts in my

Detroit:
a) Strings
b) Melody
c) Funk
d) Jacked
e) Kick

These are not in any order but I'd say the strongest one for Detroit is
the strings, that's how a lot of people define it. I like all flavours
but sometimes see little point in just copying...For me techno isn't
about just joining the dots.

 a) the hard industrial vibe hard music for a hard city?

Yes, it was was nice to see an understanding of sorts on TV. I think
Derrick May was featured due to his tune being more accessible to the house
scene at that time (as the programme was about the history of house). It
wasn't anything knew on D. May's part as he was phrased with his soon to be
cliché Detroit Techno is like George Clinton and Kraftwerk stuck in a
lift theory.

My friend works for CH4 so I may be able to get get copies for UK peoples
hopefully.

Highlights for me were:

Spanky showing Pierre the 303 for the first time. He then continues to
twiddle knobs for half hour then Spanky asks, What are you doing? and he
says Dunno. Just keep doing it then?

Guy called Gerald hearing his Voodoo Ray played for the first time at the
Hacienda.

And Paul Oakenfold's Mullet hair pics, from when he was experiencing Ibiza
for the 1st time. TWAT!
Well, the bugger needed a wake-up call in some way by the looks of him at
that time!

Yeah, best thing on TV about this ever! I was surprised no-one commented on
last week's 2nd segment (mind you, neither did I...) seeing as that was
where Detroit came into play. Having said that, Derrick May and Kevin
Saunderson were both featured but Juan Atkins wasn't mentioned at all. Also
interesting about last week's was a former UK Chief Constable admitting
that
the police wilfully broke the law to try and stop parties going off.

Last night's was pretty much excellent too, although you could tell that
the
timeline (1990-present) had been extended because the made some pretty big
jumps. I think they gave the Happy Mondays rather too much credit for
'bringing house to the masses' early on, for one thing and I really don't
think that that Leftfield/Lydon record was anywhere near as important as
they made it seem. What struck me about the part about Beltram and 'Energy
Flash' was that it was a good example of how a record could get noticed
initially for its novelty value - the 'Ecstasy' sample - but then go on to
be recognised as a classic for its musical qualities.

And if there's one club I regret never going to, it's Rage. Watching last
night's programme reminded me that I gave my copy of Goldie's 'Terminator'
to a now ex-girlfriend! It was also interesting when Goldie said that his
whole thing at one time was to freak out Derrick May wth his music. And
Pierre made a good point about music and sounds being like shareware, so
he was happy that other people had picked up on his ideas and done them
their own way. Finally, Daniel Pemberton's title music was cool too - very
reminiscent of brittle early Chicago house.

Yup, best house programme ever without a doubt. Unfortunately I didn't
video
it, I can't. I would imagine that it will be repeated soon on E4, though,
as
it's had a very positive reaction in general, so there's the chance for
someone to get it all on tape and get a copy off to, um, whoever it was on
this list who said they could convert the tape for US machines.

TOM

NP: David Donohoe: First Course In Hygiene (D1) - good stuff.

Subject: [313] Pump up the Volume

Just watching tonights episode, pretty mad.

Hearing Joey Beltram talk about how he couldn't understand how he got
labeled as a techno producer after making Energy Flash and that to him it
was just a house tune. I think it really says a lot for the New York sound
of the time. When I interviewed Frankie Bones he said that none of the
music
from Detroit really began to filter into NY until the early 90s and that
all
the early Nu Groove stuff that they all did really was concieved in
isolation from techno.

I have to say, its a pretty good programme and has been telling it pretty
much how it was, even if Derrick May did slate England for labelling music
too much :)

Re: [313] Jeff Mills Every Dog Has His Day CD

2001-11-22 Thread scott mcgill
I agree about the quality but in a funny slight on Mills it is fortunate
that he is a futurist as he seems to release tracks that are about five
years old anyone.

Nighttime World Part 1 takes the biscuit for me in terms of emotion dripping
techno albums, it has a bit of everything too. By the way is it me or does
one of the tracks on NW pt1 (I think it is Untitled) have a ghost of
PurposeMaker's 'Casa' on it faintly in the background?

SM

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I've really been digging
the CD compilation of the Every Dog Has It's Day 12 It's a curious thing
that worldwide he is way better known as a hard techno DJ than as a
producer.
For the thousands of people who have seen him spin but never actually
bought his records Every Dog Has Its Day would come as a surprise.
Rather
than the banging minimal DJ you'll see in Tokyo or Paris, this work is
 resolutely lush and soulful.

My mom is a composer and a fortune teller who told her that she was
able to heal with her music. 'Every Dog' has that feel for me -- the
message of optimism and positivity in the text on the cover is echoed by
music that is an expression of Mills version of future soul.

Mills has always been a genre of one -- the Purposemaker records are
a like Bach's Well Tempered Clavier -- an expression of minimalism that
is widely imitated, but renders all such imitations redundant. The
'Every Dog' tracks turn away from that work back towards more directly
 emotional communication.

For percursors you have to go back to the seminal Detroit techno tracks
which were really a new sort of soul music. To be a futurist is to
be an optimist, and Every Dog Has Its Day embodies that optimism and hope.
It's also the subtlest, most varied and harmonically lush work Mills
has done to date. It's a CD to which people who don't 'get' techno can
 relate.

Tom Churchill wrote on Thu, 25 Oct 2001 about following:

is Model 500 - I wanna be there released on RS or on metroplex?
   and on wich ep?

RS. The original, long version is on the 'Sonic Sunset' doublepack, and
there's a shorter edit on the 'Deep Space' LP.

The shorter edit also came out as a 12 with remixes by the likes of
Dave
Angel, but 'Sonic Sunset' is the only place you'll find the original mix
I
  think.

i can confirm this. the 12 is funnily enough, called I Wanna Be
There, and has catalogue number RS96084. Released in 1996.

Sonic Sunset was also released as cd-ep.

then there's the time trap technik cd on gigolo records, featuring the 7

and then there's the 12 on gigolo, called time trap technik as well, with

Re: [313] time trap teknik / also ties in with Top Live PA's

2001-08-29 Thread scott mcgill
It was more Cisco in a technical sense but I think it is fairly evident what
Colin offered just by hearing their sound from now against then. Colin
added this raw, chancing funk to the music for me. I remember in 1995 when
they did a live set at Tribal Gathering. I was shouting about how truly
great Colin was as he was northern soul dancing his arse off during the
breakdown to Badboy. I was then approached by a girl (fnarr) who told me
she was their agent, manager or something. She then proceeded to tell me I
was wrong and how Cisco was the real technical brains behind them. I just
gazed back as Colin got behind the equipment again at Badboy's peak and
started frantically pulling his grey goatee beard inbetween tweaks, I then
looked back at the girl and retorted Sorry love, you just don't get it.

Not slagging Cisco by the way, I just preferred them as a true unit and also
find it slightly disrespectful that Cisco carries on in the Advent's name.
Mind you I forgot about Aux-88. :o)

Dont know if this is any help but.

I was at the Bugged Out night in Glasgow where Red Planet DJ played his
first UK gig. This was indeed Namowan (dont know if it will be him in
London
though). He came on after Justin Robertson who had spun his usual hard
house
 and techno thing.

The place went dark, a camouflage net appeared covering the decks and then
a
red light came on behind the DJ. then came the usual Red Planet/UR and
quality detroit tracks. I found the set to be fairly well put together
with
no fancy tricks (and no bad mixing) but nothing spectacular (certainly not
a
Rolando, T1000, Hood, Mills... type set).

And after seeing Chaos live (with Mike Banks) at the Club 69 gig in
January
I would certainly recommend going to the Chaos and Red Planet night.

 Cheers

Well I think I'm gonna check out the Red Planet night, but I've gotta
admit to being somewhat confused by the whole red planet thing. The Red
Planet releases have been credited to Will Thomas, have featured James
Pennington, Eddie Fowlkes and Juan Atkins and sound like they must be
produced by Mike Banks (something I had always assumed to be the case).
There have been comments made in the past by Cornelius Harris that
suggests
that There is no one Martian and that Red Planet, like UR is made up of a
number of operatives. So, my question isjust who is DJ Red Planet
There was a set at the UR party during the DEMF that featured a strange
named Red Planet DJ, who was this and is this the same guy playing the
 London gig???

Just got back from DJ Bone/Steve Stoll/8fatfat8 show (Minneapolis).
Short review...8fatfat8 were great for the time I heard them (about
20minutes), playing deep funky house grooves. If you ever get a chance to
see them do so. The short amount of music I heard from them was
fantastic.
Steve Stoll was Steve Stoll...I've had my share of DJs spinning this kind
 of
hard techno and I swear that I have a tape with either Heiko Laux or Sven
Vath that has practically all the same tunes he played. Thumping but not
 really inspiring.
DJ Bone put me back at DEMF. Dropped a handful or two of Detroit classics
(Good Life Carl Craig Remix, Jaguar, Paperclip People, and more but I'm
forgetting everything right now...a bit tired) and satisfying selection
of
electro mixed in. One track that he played had a vocal that went
(paraphrasing) get up get up get upsit your ass back down. Very
funky
sh*t...it had some serious bump to it. Anyone know this tune? Thanks.

 MEK

PS the venue was excellent...old brick theatre that looks decrepid but in
reality is functioning, with the stage converted to a dance floor. All
the
stage lighting system was utilized and their were performers up in the
arches. If I find photos somewhere I will fwd them to the list.

A few weeks back I asked what this record was that had a female vocal that

Someone told me it was Felix Da Housecat What Is House Muzik?

Since then a friend has told me it was DJ Pierre on Emotive under the guise

The way I remember is that Cisco Ferriera has remained under 'the Advent'
moniker on his own (cheek). He is also 'Mr. G' and 'Afterlife.' Colin
McBean goes under the 'G-Flame' moniker and also a release on Molecular as
'Halcyon Daze'.

That unmistakable tight and crisp sound is still about.

 FALSE, sort of...

Colin McBean, (formerly) 1/2 of The Advent, = Mr. G
Cisco Ferreira, the other 1/2 of The Advent, = G Flame

The Advent as it stands currently is only Cisco, so technically The
 Advent = G Flame.

...and Stanny Franssen (formerly of LFO) = G-Force.

Check used bins in *every* record shop that has them. You never know what

split ep (w tobias Schmidt) saetiva
 Mockba ep saetiva

The first four landstrumm records are the ones to look out for, 5 and 6

alright but he is starting to slip.

The 2 polaris records came out around 96-97, I am not exactly sure where
they fit into the release order...this is where I started to lose

 Then came the tresor material:

Tresor presents the Scandinavia sessions ep (as navario sauro sp?)
 Understanding Disinformation

 whatever came out on scandinavia...

I guess he is doing hip-hop and other stuff now, but I have not really

I saw Orlando a few years back at House of God alongside Surgeon. I much
preferred what he was doing.
The roof went off when he dropped the 2 copies of Flash; the rest of the
night's music was in a similar vein. I also remember thinking what a
terrific idea it was when I saw Voorn leaving, there was Surgeon trundling
behind struggling with his record box, whilst Voorn just strolled along with
his on a sort of personal airport trolley. Where can I get one?

Go see.

Well, the last few times I have seen him he has dished out the freebies and
even taken a few punters under his wing by letting them have the guest list

I suppose you have a few alternate stories as everyone has. In fact, what

Blunthead plays Bugged Out this weekend if anyone is near and doesn't know.
Also making an appearance will be DJ Sneak, Dave Clarke (electro techno

Does anybody know if Robert is playing anywhere else in the UK this month?

DJ Bone will play Voodoo's birthday on May 11th with Slam if anyone is about
then also.

Having both heard Amil from Technasia Dj and been in contact with him ever
since Force was released. All I can say is, like their music his
selection
 and
Dj style are impeccable. Props to Green Galactic for having Amil throw
down
at their intimate event in Miami. These two guys (Amil Charles) are all
 about quality and not
just pumping out record after record. Other labels they run are Star
Tracks
 and Sino.
I believe he said Mr. John Tejada was one of the forthcoming releases on
 Sino.
With all this in mind I would put them at the top of your list of people
to
 go see
and/or book for a gig.(if anyone needs their booking contact I can forward
 that on)

While on the subject of good labels and producers I wonder how many people
on this list were feeling Octave One Black Water. I know I played it to
 death in both
house and techno sets. It also was the one track that really stood out the
 last time
I heard Jeff Mills play here in Toronto.

Finally fresh 12 releases from the Round Table family
the new Format 006 and Chair 011 for all
 underground heads around the world.

2000-12-11 Thread scott mcgill
I have seen the way that, techno, has been absorbed by Europe and sent
back to the U.S., foolin people over here into thinkin that some crafty
Euro-DJ's and producers were the one's who Invented it. I have always
known where techno came from, though.

Fair comment, except as long as you realise that you fooled yourself.
Not all people over here in the UK and Europe are blinkered, we know
where movements are derivative from. But I am not going to go planting
a flag as to where things began as you wouldn't know where to start.
IMHO I give most respect to Kraftwerk, because for me they basically
kicked something off that seemed to come ahead of its time - True
Visionaries.

Re: To Detroit, if it wasn't for the scene outside the US it is quite
possible
that Detroit would not be as furtive as it is today. I think it is criminal
how America regard Fat Boy (Housemartin) Slim, Chemical Bros, Moby,
Oakenfold et al, it is the same in the mainstream over here. This is because
Detroit was ignored first time round. It is not about a location, it is a
sate
of mind. It's more important about where it is going than were it began
anyway.
Man, anyone would think we were living UNDERGROUND.

Re: [313] Kraftwerk Expo 2000 Mixes...

2000-11-30 Thread scott mcgill
Somebody said that the Andrew Holland Infiltrator mix was hard work or
sumtin.

I thought that this was a very approachable reworking myself.
Respect.

On UR, does anybody know of any other material by Chuck Gibson besides the
Perception track on Interstellar.
Oh and any stuff by Gerald Mitchell worth checking apart from the Al Green
sampled Soul Saver. Is he Wild Planet?

Cheers peers,

Jaguar) Track Down this double pack asap!

Is there a reason no one mentions Tag? I love that store. They turned me
on
to Thomas Brinkmann. Atlas is very good too.

And Reckless has a *LOAD* of Detroit techno and other electronic music in
now. If only I had more money when I was there...

If you're looking for the most helpful record stores, these are my picks:

 1. Ambient Soho
Their staff is really really cool and very knowledgable about all genres
of
musik. Do some artist/label name dropping and they'll point you to some
great stuff. They turned me on to so many new artists and
labels...really
 incredible experiences in there.

 2. Atlas Records
Ok, this place is the bomb for the detroit sound and the help there is
really into the same stuff. Again, tell them the kind of stuff you're
looking for and they'll expose you to all sorts of new stuff you've
 probably
never heard, but will love. I discovered a lot of UK labels from that
 place
including Bluetrain. That's also where I found my copy of 3MB (Maurizio)
 and Juan Atkin's colaboration...very cool.

Now, I have to also mention Sister Ray it's a great store, but a very
eclectic collection so the staff isn't as good at helping you find cool
stuff. But, that said, I found all sorts of great classic Tresor, Plus
8,
etc. Tons of rare IDM stuff in there too. You'll like it. I found one
of
Hawtin's first ever releases in there (From Our Minds to Yours on
States
 of Mind).

Anyway you look at it, London has some kick ass record stores...but,
alas,
you'll get screwed a little bit on the exchange rate. It's worth it.

Re: [313] Parrallel 9.......mmmmmm

2000-11-28 Thread scott mcgill
He started out under the guidance of Derrick May on 100% Pure. Since then
he has taken on the mindset of Robert Hood. Check his new tracks on his
other label Scorp - its got that Advent ride and raw funk like when Colin
was still there.

BTW, Anybody know where I can get a copy of Steve Rachmad's Secret Life of
Machines LP or Astronotes?

Re: [313] Terrence Dixon

2000-11-24 Thread scott mcgill
There is a record out on Background, German label. It is solely by Terrence
Dixon (Bg 02) - check it. Minimal and repetition is what they are about.
Previous artists include Todd Sines, Mike Grant, DJ Hyperactive, Stewart
Walker (man of the moment), Ectomorph etc...

*** Good work, now go find out who Drexcia are...

  Hi guys and gals,

Hate to go bursting bubbles, but I actually asked James Pennington last
  year
as to who was behind the Red Plane series. He said that it was Mike
 Banks,
  Rolando, Chaos, and himself.

He added that he was solely responsible for Red Planet 6.

Troy Geary - Kanzelramt

2000-11-24 Thread scott mcgill
More info on Troy and others check www.kanzelramt.com I think that it's the
right URL link. It is one of the most consistent labels around with Laux,
Heil and Morganstern to name a few.
If the url is wrong, does anyone have the right link?

Also, does anyone have info on Rino Cerrone or Jacek Sienkiewcz, Italian and
Polish respectively; 1's to watch.

I think you're barking up the wrong tree there, man. He is just one of
those
international kids - I forget the the details of it. His accent is very
 Swedish.

does anyone know why Christian Smith added Solbakken to his last name and
moved to Sweeden?? I know he is from DC, so don't be trying to tell me
that
he was always in sweeden. Tronic even used to be based in DC, and i have
the white label of their third release to prove it. complete with the
review sheet and all. just curiousi just think it seems kinda fake
to
me. i would aske the same thing if juan moved to iceland and changed his
 name to atkinson...

Re: [313] takaaki itoh

2000-11-24 Thread scott mcgill
I remember him having a release on Mike Dearborn's Majesty. He also
released a record around the same time as Electracom release on Stimulus
(UK), it was reminiscent of Oliver Ho's style but more conventional.

He needs to release a bit more material before I make any solid judgement
but he is promising!
