it all gets a bit confusing when we loose sight of the true origins of
techno.

techno is just a marketing term used by a british label to sell a detroit
house music compilation in the '80s. "the new dance sound of detroit:
techno" just sounded better than "the old dance sound of chicago: detroit
house."

that it is easier as one might think to send mail in others name. one
wouldnt even need to be subscribed to a list which would be rather
harmless. it would become serious if one does not send spam or viruses
with a real existing faked adress but - lets say order some stuff, or -
craft some mail so, that a victim, working for a company, asks for a job
at another company and manages it so, that the boss would see it - which
would end in a fired victim. the possibilities are wide. its not just
faked spam or viruses. but i see the responses and their attitudes and
realize that it was of course a very wrong thing to do - because no one
cares.

I think the earliest Peacefrog I own is the Adam X '808 Terror' one... I
remember reading a review of that in Under One Sky in which Peacefrog is
described as a "new acid label", and even the Apogee 12" is quite acidic
in places!

Peacefrog's back catalogue certainly reads like a summary of the various
musical phases I (and many others) went through as the 1990s
progressed... and you get the sense that it's pretty far from being over
too.

Well , that is PF012, not PFG012.

Peacefrog started releasing everything after the PF100 (the 5 disc
compilations) with PFG in the cat #.
So instead of using PF101, they used PFG001 as the cat #.

According to "sonic groove" the G in PFG is standing for GOLD.

Maarten

I now realise this must be an error on discogs?
I think that PFG012 is an album of the detroit escalator co.

Is it correct that moodymann did a record on peacefrog with cat # PFG 012,
because I never saw that record anywhere.. I just discovered it now on

yeah but you have to be superquick and if your good with the eq you can
pick different parts of three records for one mix, or run two copies of a
'looped banger' for max funk impact :). two decks is a lot more difficult
for this (tho not impossible)

i think you're spot on with the textures comment

Re: [313] confused about confuser

2002-08-15 Thread Ben Goldberger
Boring bangin' DJs have really done a disservice to the music. No beauty
and no little movement make for a restless crowd. And especially in a city
like Chicago (where I live) where house rules, this sort of approach seems
to drive people away from techno events that are far from painfully
monotonous. A lot of newcomers hear a hard techno set with little
variation and mix-action and they immediately run for the house hills.

2. Not all looped bangers are equally interesting! Some records may be
looped but, have, say, a bassline that is just sick. Or just one little
thing, such as a string part, that fades in slowly and gives it that
certain feeling. I tend to look for records that are certainly mostly
looped bangers but have that one thing that makes them dramatic and
memorable in some way.
3. There are a lot of different textures within minimal techno and
banging drumtrax records. To me a big problem with boring techno sets is
often that they display no variation in the overall texture as they
progress. To me things should move in a gradual way to different
places. I notice with the overabundance of tribal tracks that the all
tribal texture can definitely get boring if not mixed with other flavors.
4. There is a way to mix in more minimal records which makes them seem
more dramatic, good DJs do this. Of course working the FX well helps on
this too.

just some comments, I think this is pretty 313 relevant since Detroit has
its own share of this techno!

Well, I'd say I somewhat agree, although not totally.

1. I think it can be done on two decks... but the mixing has to be
pretty quick certainly. Not letting records just play out but really
mixing and playing around with them.
2. Not all looped bangers are equally interesting! Some records may be

to keep perspective, you must consider that, to some, a lack of tangible
emotion in a track will instill a feeling of minimalizm or desolation.

reminds me of the ride from east side to southfield on i-75

Hello all. I have a certain question concerning a certain record I
purchased a couple of months ago. The label simply reads 'Confuser' and
bears the names Tobias & Marco. For the longest time I had no inkling as to
what the origin of this album truly was. As serendipity would have it, I
was mindlessly leafing through an old issue of URB the other night, and lo
and behold I see the name Confuser 1 in the reviews section. (If I remember
correctly, the guest columnist was Regis.) From what I gathered the artists
responsible were none other than Tobias Schmidt and Marco Carola. Is this
correct? The tracks are amalgamations of samples from classic house and
techno tracks. Am I way off base here? Now, was this a one shot deal, or
the beginning of a continued series? And is Confuser simply a project name
or a label spinoff? Thanks in advance for the inside scoop.

I've got "confuser 001" - if it is Marco Carola, it doesn't sound like him
as it's got a rough edge to it and his productions are usually quite
crisp-sounding. However I've not heard any Tobias Schmidt records so

Scmhidt's record are generally 'rough'and excellent, imho.

Re: [313] confused about confuser

2002-08-15 Thread Toby Frith
I've got "confuser 001" - if it is Marco Carola, it doesn't sound like him
as it's got a rough edge to it and his productions are usually quite
crisp-sounding. However I've not heard any Tobias Schmidt records so

I am trying to instruct a friend on where to locate crucial etchings... NSC

Scene here in Slovenia really started developing sometime in 94-95, with
Matrix Musik (which was the first techno label in eastern europe), and
than Absense & stuff. But people were producing stuff & Djing much
earlier. Random Logic had their first track out in 92 on some
compilation, they were also the first ones to get a deal on a foreign
label (Black Label in 95), than came Umek & Absense stuff.
I have to find some time and write a history of slovenian techno scene
and put it on my page.

To clairify:
Hey, I have been covering the Australian scene for some years now, so I know
the history! There were always innovators, renegades, HMC was one of them,
Voiteck another, and there are yet others, but the scene as a whole has come
into its own in recent years, almost everyone in Melbourne would acknowledge
that
(the promoters, the DJs) - and I know most of them personally - and I think
many of the Adelaide posse too, like Bundi. I think the techno scene here is
in many ways ahead of other parts of the world now. Every territory develops
differently, in some ways faster, others slower. Most of the internationals
comment on the freshness of the Australian scene, and I have heard the same
said of Eastern Europe (I myself am of Eastern European background, as is
Voiteck), with Australians and Eastern Europeans being less jaded than some
of the Brits/Western Europeans, and maybe that impressed people like
Mills. At no point did anyone say we were regressive or that there
was a non-existent scene at any stage.
