 2 x C2 remixes on remake
 Basic channel remake of remake
 Sueno Latino
Derrick May's mix of Sueno Latino + many other mixes
plus there's are tracks by the Detroit Escalator company
and by ismistik that essentially revamp e2-e4 in their own flavor
without being straight covers or remixes.
I'm sure there are many more...

Nice breakdown. Another I can think of is a track by Mannequin Lung on The
Art of Travel 2LP (on Plug Research), forgot the name. Features the sample
prominently and cool re-work of it.

Neil Oliverra from DEC also calls E2-E4 something like the soundtrack to
Detroit in his _Reality Slap_ novella thing.

I think it's probably one of the most succesful motifs (memes)
in techno history (if you exclude breaks)

I agree! I tried to get it as an Illinois licence plate, actually... :)

I guess you fell from sleep one night listening Charles ;-)

He did team up with Jim and Dannie owners of Wax Trax in Chicago, also with
Greg who worked there.

Mike Smythe from UK (co-owner of Wax Trax) was friend of Jac Holzman the
founder of Elektra.

Is the reason why Wax Trax stocked Computer World right after the release in
1981.

Wax Trax stocked also a lot of Spalax (defunct tempel records) founded by
Gabriel Ibos. Manuel Göttsching (E2-E4) signed on Spalax.

Gabriel Ibos teamed up with Daniel and Patrick from Front 242.
Daniel and Patrick teamed up with Jim (Wax Trax).
As a result of all these links Wax Trax, the supreme factory records in
Chicago at that time, stocked extensively independents European labels,
particularly in the so called industrial, electronic music genre.

Hailing from Little Rock, Arkansas, from WAAM, to WJLB, to WGPR, to WCHB
among others, The Electrifying Mojo, a.k.a. Charles Johnson, who
played Computer World in 1981 on his Midnight Funk Association show, didn't
play E2-E4 in 1984 or after? I have difficulty in believing it.

To be checked...

I just remembered a track I used to like around ten years ago - god
knows who it was by, but it got played a lot on pirate radio around
London in 1991/92. It featured the chords from E2-E4 (although with a
subtle gate effect on them), the vocal and bassline from Final Cut's
Take Me Away, and a particular classic breakbeat whose name I forget!
I didn't know of either E2-E4 or Take Me Away at that point, so when I
did eventually discover those two records I had a smile on my face. But
to this day I'd love to find that old hardcore track with the samples;
and I always find myself imagining the chords from E2-E4 whenever I hear
the acapella of Take Me Away...

I think we're both right, in a way. I've just discovered that Bushwacka is
the culprit, and it's a remix of Sueno Latino, not e2-e4. The short bit I
heard was a bit w/o the vocal, so I just figured it was e2-e4:

http://www.groovetech.com/PhoenixData/SilverStream/Pages/srvltRecMed?Recorde
dMediaID=40928

You can call it Progressive House or flacid tech house - I dunno. There's
also an awful trance verion too. Shame Bushwacka did this. His track with
'Lifeblood' Layo on that THE END's Subterranean v. 2 comp that also has a
Pullen track is actually kinda nice:

RE: (313) E2-E4 Manuel Goettsching

The story with Sueno Latino was that they wanted to release it as a
straight-up remix of E2-E4, and had Goettsching's full consent. However,
his label didn't like the idea and prevented them from using the name
E2-E4, which is what led to the track being titled Sueno Latino. Derrick
May turned out a very nice remix of it.

The reason this remix had to be made is because the time signature on
the original is actually a bit strange, making it very very tricky to
actually beatmix with other 4/4 records! And while E2-E4 isn't often
cited as a particularly influential work for early Detroit techno, I
don't think you can deny that it was extremely seminal for people like
Maurizio and people like that - in fact Goettsching ended up
collaborating with Maurizio on Schizophrenia, did he not?

Most would probably not argue that it is one of the most influential
 songs.
For the most direct relationship, check out Paperclip People's
 'Remake',
which is basically a 10-minute remix of this song. I almost gagged the
 other
day when I heard a progressive mix of this on TV. It was up there with
 'Strings' level bastardizations.

I'm not a techno music historian but I do remember reading an Carl Craig
interview where he talks about the song being an inspiration going back to
1988, E2E4 was one of those remixes he had on acetate and
he wanted to release it so he got Manuel Gottsching permission, it was put
out on the Paper Clip People Throw 12.

I remember a Craig interview where he cites May playing it at the music
institute and being totally blown away. I think he mentioned May
getting it from either Mojo or on of his trips to Chicago, and getting
it from Lil Louis.

http://www.deephousepage.com/mixes12.htm

Lil Louis live at the bismark, 1989, mixes it into a house set, sounds
terrific.

Apparently E2-E4 was recorded in one take (i.e. one hour), with no
overdubs or editing (apart from those needed for side A B of the
record). Almost inconceivable, isn't it? I also recommend Gottsching's
'Dream Desire', a bizarre, almost kitschily-beautiful album bedecked
with incredible synth work. True phonographer MG talks about E2-E4 his
career at: www.eurock.com/features/ashra/

Just wondering: have all the early UR releases been re-released on vinyl
by now? Which ones are left how rare are they? Which ones are virtually
impossible to track down?

As far as I know the whole of the UR records back catalogue is still
readily

available, but there are a couple of releases that are rare. UR 46 was only
released as part of a double pack on NSC records and is not so easily
available. Also the first ever (as far as I know) release by UR was an
album

called 'Hype Stuff (You gotta Move to)' which featured vocals by Rob Hood,
Yolanda Reynolds and a host of others. I'm pretty sure it came out before
UR01 as, apart from the copy I have I've never known anyone who has ever
heard of it before. Though there is a track on it called 'You've got to
show
me' that I think was released on Shockwave. Of course you also have the UR
Z

tracks which are supposedly Assault DJ issue only, SID releases and some
other stuff on Shockwave (Acid Rain1). Plus There's the Hipnotech label,
which is a UR offshoot that puts out mainly downtempo beaty stuff and lets
not forget the album on Network records that had a short track of them
live.

so what is the real deal on the Z tracks. Are they destined to be forever

I think one or two has uncleared/unclearable samples in it, right? (I'm

Any idea on the availability of an edit that I heard Dave Clarke play eons
 ago.
It was a different version of Suburban's 'Nocturbulous Behaviour' straight
 out of the D.

I hate the exclusiveness of tracks that would mean so much to the right
people and not just high profile DJ's. While on point, does anyone know
of
a track by Mills on 'Essence Records'? It only had 50 made and was
supposedly called Magma, but it wasn't the one of the same name on Thera.
Basically it is a simple string arrangement with the addition of
percussion
making it one of the most sinister funky grooves I have ever heard. I
have
only ever heard Claude Young and Surgeon play it. Can anyone elaborate on
this as I am flying blind on my rocketcycle with this?

Of course you also have the UR Z tracks which are supposedly Assault
DJ
  issue only,

so what is the real deal on the Z tracks. Are they destined to be
forever
unavaliable? Is this out of exclusitivity only or are there other
factors?
I think one or two has uncleared/unclearable samples in it, right? (I'm
thinking 'soul power' has samples from the JB's tune of the same name,
right?) I would give body organs to have 'soul power' on vinyl

couple more for the list:

the original UR-021 was the Piranha ep, but this has since been replaced
by Crime Report which was a companion ep to the Interstellar Fugitives
lp.

UR-011 was slated to be the Panic ep, but for whatever reason this release
was pulled and replaced by Suburban Knight's Nocturbulous Behaviour. a
coupla years ago the pressing plant UR use mispressed a bunch of UR-011's,
using the plates for the Panic ep by mistake. i've no idea how many
copies were produced, but for a short while 5 or so years ago Submerge were
selling the mispresses as UR-011-011.

I think 'The Fury' was the original UR-018 - this was replaced by by MIA's
'Schoolcraft Bump' 12 a few years back.

Apparently E2-E4 was recorded in one take (i.e. one hour), with no
overdubs or editing (apart from those needed for side A B of the
record). Almost inconceivable, isn't it? I also recommend Gottsching's
'Dream Desire', a bizarre, almost kitschily-beautiful album bedecked
with incredible synth work. True phonographer MG talks about E2-E4 his
 career at: www.eurock.com/features/ashra/

Just wondering: have all the early UR releases been re-released on vinyl
by now? Which ones are left how rare are they? Which ones are virtually
 impossible to track down?

 Thanks,
 Wes

As far as I know the whole of the UR records back catalogue is still readily
available, but there are a couple of releases that are rare. UR 46 was only
released as part of a double pack on NSC records and is not so easily
available. Also the first ever (as far as I know) release by UR was an album
called 'Hype Stuff (You gotta Move to)' which featured vocals by Rob Hood,
Yolanda Reynolds and a host of others. I'm pretty sure it came out before
UR01 as, apart from the copy I have I've never known anyone who has ever
heard of it before. Though there is a track on it called 'You've got to show
me' that I think was released on Shockwave. Of course you also have the UR Z
tracks which are supposedly Assault DJ issue only, SID releases and some
other stuff on Shockwave (Acid Rain1). Plus There's the Hipnotech label,
which is a UR offshoot that puts out mainly downtempo beaty stuff and lets
not forget the album on Network records that had a short track of them live.

Peace

It's the one they sampled for Sueño Latino (and Carl
 Craigs Remake, there's a Maurizio/Basic
 Channel-version too).

Didn't one of the Quadrant tracks sampled it also?

 Manuel Göttsching was a krautrock-guitarist (don't
remember which group at the moment, one of the more

He used to play in Ash Ra Temple, they recorded some really nice albums
also.

well known...) The record, a concept album about
chess, is really one long repetitive,
synth+drummachine-led track. It was played by Larry
Levan att the Paradise Garage and surely loads of
Detroit-people but to me it still sounds like the
future somehow. It's been reissued on a label called
something like DA. On vinyl too (I've heard) but
 I've only found the cd.
