(313) Recloose

2003-07-15 Thread dhagger
"Its funny you should ask
I helped promote Recloose and common factor back in 2001 at a gig called
Raw
Funk, also villalobos, eddie flashin fowlkes, heiko laux, alexander
kowalski, isolee.

Promoters should know if they're coming or going - not just shove on a gig
which cross-covers music genre's. You're a sell out promoter who's just
trying to get punters if you start doing a sankeys."

Are you the Ryan from Perth? If not, apologies in advance. If so, I also
was involved with these parties, and they (like perth gigs in general)
don't cross genre's at all - bar whats being done at the Inglewood these
days. This IMO, is the reason Melbourne, and Sydney to a small extent,
holds the interest of a vast range of punters just looking for good quality
music. As previosly discussed, better than flanking a wall with one hand
stroking your chin and the other taking notes on 8 hours of 4/4. I remember
Reclooose playing at Plastic People in London in 2001. (maybe late 2000)
and he tore the place apart with an eclectic mix of everything - in my eyes
- doing what he does best. Hip hop/soul/broken/house/etc. More recently I
have heard him play a solid set, predominantly house driven. Just as
outstanding. I don't think you can fault the guy's ear at all. Like wise
with Theo at Home in 2000 on the Trackmode tour. Mixing such a broad
spectrum of disco and soul with the likes of Dan Ryan in the middle just
blows people away.

I don't think these promoter's are "just shoving on" gigs at all. That's a
pretty one eyed view. These kind of gigs offer something else - thats all.

Cheers, Dave

I'm nearly positive that there are no recloose mix CDs available. The
old-schoolers may know whether there are any DJ Bubblicious mixtapes,
however - "DJ Bubbilicious" is the name Recloose used to use when he was
based in Ann Arbor.

There *is* this, however:

Check out Recloose's set on Detroit Technology (okay, it's partly

(313) Recloose Live Band

2007-02-10 Thread Fred Heutte
I've been in New Zealand for the last two-plus weeks on vacation.
Had a chance to catch Recloose DJing at Sandwiches in Wellington
a week ago, and Matt's new project, the Recloose Live Band, at a
street fair in Petone just outside Welly last night. At the corner
of Jackson and Buick, would you believe.

The band is an eight-piece jazz/funk outfit playing mostly
originals and really is quite good, staying away from the cliches
that plague these kinds of efforts.

They have a brand-new CD out, Backwards and Sideways,
recorded live at the San Francisco Bath House club in Wellington
last November:

http://www.myspace.com/reclooseliveband

The CD doesn't have my favorite track, "Sanctuary," but you can
hear it on Matt's Myspace page:

http://www.myspace.com/mattchicoine

I talked with Matt a little and I think he misses tha D a lot
(who doesn't of those who emigrate), and making a living doing
music is hard anywhere but harder when your main markets
are 10,000 miles away, but he's scraping through and doing it
grand. So, good on yer Matt. And will someone PLEASE book
this band for the Detroit music festival this year!

Recloose Bio . . .

Those people reading about Recloose for the first time may not know the bit
of techno folklore about how he got discovered, while those fans of the DJ
and producer from his previous releases on Planet E have probably heard all
about it. Both parties, however, should be interested to know that yes, the
sandwich story is indeed true. Fact, even. Fresh from a college degree from
the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Recloose was slingin' lunch
specials behind the counter of the Russell Street Deli in Detroit. One
afternoon, the burgeoning DJ, who previously went under the moniker
Bubblicious as a spry, young hip-hop teen, spotted Planet E poobah and
techno ingénue Carl Craig in for a quick sandwich. In a crafty bit of
fortuitousness, Recloose dipped into his backpack past the SoleSides and
Pharcyde tapes to pull out one of his newly minted demo tapes. And in a
triumphant bit of resourcefulness, he slipped the tape between some bread
and into Craig's to-go order. Taken with the kid's deli-sized deftness,
Craig listened to the tape and loved what he heard. And so the story began.

Five years later, Recloose (a.k.a. Matthew Chicoine) offers his debut album
Cardiology after a number of well-received releases have made him one of
Detroit's signature artists. Through his two EPs, two singles, one mix CD
and numerous remixes, Recloose has developed a sound and style that he best
sums up as "shape-shifting," an amorphous aesthetic that mixes samples,
chopped beats and lots of rhythms predicated on tweaks and abstractions of
sound. That his album is called Cardiology is intended to mean that it is
music not intended to be dissected and academically deconstructed but
rather, felt. "I was trying to create music from the heart," he describes.
"Less with my brain and more with my innards." (In a sentimental bit of
vulnerability, he might also tell you it was inspired by the longing he felt
from being so far from his girlfriend while he recorded the album).

Recloose moved to Detroit after graduating from Ann Arbor in 1996.  Like
many, he was a DJ at his college radio station, enthralled with hip-hop,
jazz and funk.  In those days, especially to hip-hop heads, techno held an
irredeemable stigma, even if Recloose didn't quite know how to articulate
it. While just 45 minutes away, Detroit might as well have been on another
continent; its grand techno scene rarely escaped outside its metropolis
confines. As Recloose matured in his music appreciation, that changed, and
he began to open up to it, discovering that many of his favorite "classics"
were done by Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Carl Craig just down the highway.
Categorizations were just that and Recloose began to connect the dots.

That is perhaps why Recloose's music seems so resonant today, especially on
Cardiology - his music doesn't fit the strict mold of any one musical
style.  Though you could aptly describe some songs as "dancefloor" and some
as "downtempo," there are too many elements at play in his music to ever
have it be described so tidily: the vocal chops on "Ain't Changing," the
dubby undertow of "Absence of One," the old Detroit soul feel of "Can't Take
It" and the gilded, nocturnal paean "Processional." Recloose played
saxophone for eight years and credits that training for developing his ear.
His tunes are indeed refined and eloquent, and he has proved himself to be
adaptable to many music situations, in the studio, live or as a DJ. His
mission is always the same: add to the musical narrative in whatever style
it decides to manifest.

I think an earlier incarnation of this band may have played at Fabirc one
upon a time. Is that right? Anyone? IIRC it was OK then, but not really
great. I've only the vaguest of recollections. Would love to see something
that winds up half-way between Fat Freddys Drop and Recloose though. That
would be how I envision it might work. Is that anywhere near the mark Fred?

You can get a good sense of the band by checking out the
tracks at MySpace. As Matt notes, it's a real challenge to
go to a live band format when you're used to controlling
every bit from the console. They have clearly practiced
a lot and played enough gigs not only to do a credible job
but to have a good stage presence and an enjoyable show.
but it's not identikit street fair fodder either :)

well jealous Fred! I caught him play with his band at the jazz cafe
in London and it was fantastic. He also played fabric but i missed
that (anyone go?). Hollie Smith sang at the jazz cafe, and she
sounded amazing. She has done an ep but haven't heard it?

I just hope recloose puts another fine techno mix out like his one on
jigsaw. Or even DJ in England would be good.

I see rhythm and sound are playing fabric on the 3rd is this an
experience worth seeing anyone?

The band is an eight-piece jazz/funk outfit playing mostly

They have a brand-new CD out, Backwards and Sideways,
recorded live at the San Francisco Bath House club in Wellington

The CD doesn't have my favorite track, "Sanctuary," but you can
hear it on Matt's Myspace page:

I talked with Matt a little and I think he misses tha D a lot
(who doesn't of those who emigrate), and making a living doing
music is hard anywhere but harder when your main markets
are 10,000 miles away, but he's scraping through and doing it

When I've seen him he's been incredibly inconsistent, from brilliant to
train-wreck central. I'm struggling to think of anyone who's performed less
consistently. Obviously I may have just caught a wide variance in the five
or so times I've seen him, but they've been totally uncomparable. I have
enjoyed his recorded mixes though.

If you want to see DJs sitting down playing 7" dub records end-to-end with
good MCs then yes. It's nice to see and it's very enjoyable on those terms,
but don't expect anything more than that.

This will not work in Fabric, all the kids out of there head will not
get it, it'll be similar to the Reinforced records party when UR hosted
a room and Theo came on last 5am -7am set, after all the 313 boys
slamming it out and cleared the dance floor. Ha-ha, it was great. I

Yip, the album is done and dusted and it seems promos are starting to slip
out. The track on Gilles' show features Justin Chapman and Genevieve
Marantette (both carried over from Cardiology), and was recorded in New
Zealand a couple of years back. They were working on some kinda
collaborative project at the time.

There's another track at the end of the latest Compost Radio Show which is

Just wait 'till you hear Justin's new solo joint. He's been a freekin' hermit
the whole time he's been working on it. Only coming out of the cave for short
visits with the public. Haven't heard it (top secret!), but have it on good
word it's just melt in your mouth good. Spoke to him about it and I get the
feeling it'll be his most personal stuff yet. Justin's a great musician and
individual anyway s. Yeah. Can't wait for either to slip into my greasy

Common Factor is AKA Mr Nick Calingaert. He's clocked up quite a few
releases now, mainly on Planet E ('Pisces Groove', 'Expanded EP' etc),
but he's also put stuff out on labels like Paper and SSR. He's a great
DJ (although he hardly plays out in Chicago) and also performs an
excellent live P.A (with MPC 3000, Juno et al). I guess you could
describe his music as House... but it really has an overall modern club
sound (much like alot of the current Planet E 'sound'), that takes in
alot of electronic music's influences (both recent and distant). If
you're into Detroit flavoured music... I'd definitely recommend
tracking down some of his releases.

agree with all the comments posted on this one so far - the recloose mix is
the one that's doing it for me, but i can't really fault the common factor
or mettle mixes... who's mettle?...

just thought i'd post to clear up which label it's on - it's not metamorphic
- but belgium's elypsia... the tracks are all mixes of tracks from dan
curtin's 'pregenisis' album from about a year or so ago - a great album in
itself... just one of the cool releases on elypsia in the last couple of
weeks - bit of a return to form for them (what with the scan7 release as
well)...

while i'm posting, i must recommend the two upcoming releases on delsin and
rushhour by optic nerve and m>o>s ft. aroy dee respectively... you'll be
hard pushed to find two better records this year - absolute classic techno
out of amsterdam... and for all the broken beat fans - do check out the new
dhj record on archive, a cover of level 42's 'shapeshifter' - and a
wonderful one at that...

lots of really talented, well known people coming up on rushhour too...!
gonna continue to become a great label im sure!

yeah, i should've said - the next few releases on rushhour are really
something - nubian mindz and domu mixes of aardvarck are essential, if you
haven't checked nubian mindz yet this is a good place to start - he's making
some of the most energetic and abstract stuff i've heard since early carl
craig (as high praise as i can give)... good to see/hear rushhour and delsin
establishing a connection with what's going on in london at the moment as
well as with detroit and amsterdam...

Yes this DHJ on ARchive is sweet. I am also loving this
Dutch/Detroit/W. London synergy that is happening on labels like
Delsin, Music for Speakers, the Rushhour crew, etc. The Delsin
CD comp 'going thru life' is stellar, quality from start to
finish. There's soulful electronics and broken beat
experimentations, the Aardvarck material is really doing it for
me at the moment, very different. Peel Seamus turns in more moody
and deep techno, reminds of the Black Dog mood.

Also good to see Ross154 with some new material, reminds me of
the good old days of EevoLute. THe Future Beat Alliance cut is
very Detroity. Unfortunately the cim track on there is pure
shite. JUST KIDDING it's great, reminds me of Detroit Escalator
Co., moody and string stabs but nice quick tempo.

Keep up the good work Deslin!

I think the trick is to hear it loud - when i bought it it was one of
the "just walked into the shop and it's on really loud" moments - the
bassline comes alive, it's got an acidic quality to it and the whole
groove just totally f*ckin pumps! that's why the vocal's cool, cause
it takes the vibe up a bit and makes it nice, y'know, for the ladies
;-P

and the organ is just cheeky.

On this note (and safe in the assurance that I've secured mine), I should
mention that Piccadilly have copies of Flashback and Midnight Mauraders live
for Gilles Petersen in stock at the moment. Limited to 500 copies, so run,
don't walk. Fat Freddy's stuff seems to be very hard to come by on vinyl and
disappears really fast.
